Episode 314: The Devil Makes Three has been one of roots music's outstanding if quiet success stories of the past twenty years. Formed in Santa Cruz, CA in 2001, they got out ahead of the O Brother phenomenon and built a unique, crowd-pleasing sound through a renegade admixture of early blues, hard country, gospel and punk rock. In this hour, founding singer and songwriter Pete Bernhard reflects on a career that's surprised him and, after a season of personal loss, the cathartic process behind the rather dark and candid album Spirits, their tenth as a band.

This week the Tahoe TAP podcast brings you The Devil Makes Three which is headlining WinterWonderGrass music festival - the 8th annual alpine celebration of bluegrass music and springtime in the Sierra being held April 5 – April 7, 2024, at the Palisades Tahoe Resort in Olympic Valley, California.  The Devil Makes Three is an Americana band known for their unique blend of “bluegrass” which is described on their website as wandering folk, Delta blues, whiskey-soaked ragtime, and reckless rock ‘n' roll. Their lyrics often explore themes of love, loss, addiction, and the darker aspects of life, drawing from both traditional folk music and contemporary storytelling. The band formed in 2002 in Santa Cruz, California, and consists of Pete Bernhard (guitar, vocals), Lucia Turino (upright bass, vocals), and Cooper McBean (guitar, banjo, vocals). One of the defining characteristics of The Devil Makes Three's music is their raw and energetic live performances, often featuring intricate vocal harmonies and skillful instrumentation.  You can witness them LIVE at WinterWonderGrass on Saturday, April 6th, 2024!

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateVermont-born Pete Bernhard (Devil Makes Three) was raised surrounded by art as all the adults in his life were either visual or musical artists. While his friends were obsessing over Metallica and Megadeath, Pete was captivated by old blues musicians. He found common ground with Cooper McBean growing up, who loved the same music he did and ended up becoming lifelong friends and musical partners in Devil Makes Three. Influenced by old blues and folk along with the energy they felt at punk shows they saw as teens, the pair made it their mission to create a fun, energetic live show in their performances. Devil Makes Three came together after Pete and Cooper moved to Santa Cruz, CA and teamed up with Lucia Turino. They toured and became and established band in the Americana world (and for some reason, the Jam band scene?).Pete and I talk about his draw and interest in darker subject matter, particularly drugs and the opioid crisis. We also talk about Brown Bird, a band from Rhode Island that was very close with DM3 until the death of frontman David Lamb a few years back. Since then, David's widow and bandmate, MorganEve Swain has joined DM3 while Lucia takes a break from the road. And finally, we discuss how his new solo album, Harmony Ascension Division, features songs about friends he had in his teens and 20's. The record features Pete playing quietly, which is unlike a DM3 album and more reminiscent of his style when he first start playing music at that age: teens and 20's. Pete's thoughtful, generous and kind during this interview. Hope you enjoy! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

I first heard The Devil Makes Three bleeding through the thin walls of Santa Cruz house all hours of the day and night. The trio had only just formed and practice seemingly nonstop a set of songs that would form the basis of their self-titled debut. There was nothing like them in Santa Cruz at the time, a music scene populated by freak folk, indie-noise and skater punk, but the band’s single-minded focus on stripped down, bluegrass inspired punk country was precisely what helped them stand out. And the fact that, in spite of those never ending practice sessions, they seemed to enter the world fully formed.  The world has, of course, come around to the band’s music. The band was perfectly positioned to be embraced by the indie scene’s newfound love affair with Americana, and had the songs and showmanship to back it up. When I met up with the trio, they were about to take the stage to an enthusiastic crowd at Brooklyn Steel, singing along to every song. Pete Bernhard, the band’s singer and guitarist sat down to catch up on the last 15 years and talk about what’s next for the group.
