In this message, David Lamb reminds us what we as Christians should do for people around us as he explains Paul's words to the Philippians. 5 Things Christians Should Do: 08:06 - Challenge #1: Visit someone you care about to encourage them. 09:36 - Challenge #2: Email/Message someone in need to pray for them. 10:57 - Challenge #3: Ask someone how you can serve them. 18:11 - Challenge #4: Write a post-it note reminder saying, “I'm a holy saint." 24:11 - Challenge #5: Extend grace and peace to people you disagree with. In this series, we're studying verses in Philippians that remind us of what's important. Just like our calendars, to-do lists, and notifications, Philippians keeps us on track with who we are, who Jesus is, and how we should live in response to those truths. “Being on the tools is actually quite liberating. And I've gone from the beautiful suit and the tie and the whole business look, walking in and getting, ‘yes sir, no sir, three bags full'. Now I'm a filthy tradie. And people talk to you like you're stupid. And it's quite funny, you know, so they have no idea of you. And that's I guess a lesson in life - not to judge the old book by the cover. Plenty of millionaires going around in dodgy cars. Not that I'm a millionaire, but that's the sort of thing. So you get treated quite differently because you're wearing a paint spatted t-shirt and you look a bit grubby. So that's quite liberating just to meet people and I have a theory, and it probably relates to your podcast, that everyone's got a story.Take the time to listen, take the time to talk to them. Everyone's got a story probably different to yours, so we probably need to spend more time listening, talking and finding out what people's stories are because people are a lot less boring than you think.”Episode #119 of The Hope Initiative with David Lamb.Meeting David Lamb in the aftermath of the St. Kilda 2XU triathlon in January was fantastic, and 4 weeks later we sat down following the Sandringham Olympic tri that we both completed earlier that day to chat about David's life. Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateVermont-born Pete Bernhard (Devil Makes Three) was raised surrounded by art as all the adults in his life were either visual or musical artists. While his friends were obsessing over Metallica and Megadeath, Pete was captivated by old blues musicians. He found common ground with Cooper McBean growing up, who loved the same music he did and ended up becoming lifelong friends and musical partners in Devil Makes Three. Influenced by old blues and folk along with the energy they felt at punk shows they saw as teens, the pair made it their mission to create a fun, energetic live show in their performances. Devil Makes Three came together after Pete and Cooper moved to Santa Cruz, CA and teamed up with Lucia Turino. They toured and became and established band in the Americana world (and for some reason, the Jam band scene?).Pete and I talk about his draw and interest in darker subject matter, particularly drugs and the opioid crisis. We also talk about Brown Bird, a band from Rhode Island that was very close with DM3 until the death of frontman David Lamb a few years back. Since then, David's widow and bandmate, MorganEve Swain has joined DM3 while Lucia takes a break from the road. And finally, we discuss how his new solo album, Harmony Ascension Division, features songs about friends he had in his teens and 20's. The record features Pete playing quietly, which is unlike a DM3 album and more reminiscent of his style when he first start playing music at that age: teens and 20's. Pete's thoughtful, generous and kind during this interview. Hope you enjoy! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

In Matthew 19:21-22, the Word of Christ and worldly values reach a distinct impasse. Jesus Christ the Son of man – God incarnate – Savior – Messiah – Creator – Lord – Priest – Prophet – King – Sacrifice – Rock – Cornerstone – Light – Way – Truth – Life – Living Water – Son of David – Lamb of God King of kings... personally addresses an inquisitor with the words of absolute salvation... “Come, follow me”. Having heard the Word of Christ, and having shown particular and personal interest, the man “...went away sorrowful”. I Tim 6:9-10 is pointedly illustrated in this narrative: “But those who desire to be rich, fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of Money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” It is an all too common occurrence that many who drift from Christ, do so because they are drawn toward temporal cravings. Their's are not the wild, rebellious eyes of militant unbelief... instead their eyes are mesmerized with the captivating sounds, lights, and promises of Vanity Fair.
