It's the middle of award season, and Ryan Coogler's ode to the Black music canon Sinners has emerged as the Oscars frontrunner and the most nominated film in Academy Awards history. The love the movie has for the Delta blues is front and center, and begs the question: will the movie's legacy help bring the blues back into popular culture? There's already been a precedent for films reviving dead genres – think The Sting and its ragtime score, or O Brother Where Art Thou's relationship to bluegrass – and on this episode of Switched On Pop, Reanna and Nate talk with Vulture writer Fran Hoepfner about the times in which movie soundtracks have shifted the musical culture. Bart wants a brother, so he (kinda) kidnaps an orphan for a day. Honestly, this was a fairly weak story that was filled with the usual unjustified rudeness and angst that tended to pop up in the "teen era" of the show. There's also a really odd South Park parody that doesn't seem to know why it's there.Despite all this, Dando was once again a big fan of the Homer/Marge story. Maybe this is confirmation that he is indeed getting old.We also discuss "grape snakes", the best Monopoly token, the stand-out performance from Jordan Nagai and more.If you enjoy this show, please consider supporting us on Patreon for as little as $1 per month at patreon.com/fourfingerdiscountListen on Spotify - spoti.fi/4fDcSY0Listen on Apple Podcasts - apple.co/4dgpW3ZCHECK OUT OUR OTHER PODCASTS:Goin' Down To South Park - spreaker.com/show/goin-down-to-south-parkThe Movie Guide with Maltin & Davis - themovieguidepodcast.comThe One About Friends - spreaker.com/show/the-one-about-friends-podcastTalking Seinfeld - spreaker.com/show/talking-seinfeldSpeaKing Of The Hill - spreaker.com/show/speaking-of-the-hill-a-king-of-the-hill-The Office Talk - spreaker.com/show/the-office-talk-podcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/four-finger-discount-simpsons-podcast--5828977/support.
“I'm a Dapper Dan man!”Producer/Director Bill Banowsky joins Andy Nelson and Pete Wright to discuss O Brother, Where Art Thou? from Joel Coen, reflecting on both the film's enduring appeal and his own fascinating journey through the film industry. As co-founder of Magnolia Pictures and developer of smart house theaters, Banowsky brings unique insight to this beloved Coen Brothers comedy while also discussing his new documentary A Savage Art: The Life & Cartoons of Pat Oliphant."I think we need more films like O Brother, Where Art Thou?. You gotta find story-driven films, not technology-driven films, to save this business," says Banowsky, whose career spans from law to founding smart house theaters to directing documentaries.
Fan Jan rolls on here at @wedrinkandwewatchthings, and this week we're answering a massive listener request by hopping a freight train into the Great Depression-era South with the Coen Brothers' 2000 masterpiece, O Brother, Where Art Thou? Mix yourself a R-U-N-N-O-F-T by @crft.wrld because we are joining the chain-gang escapees on their quest for buried treasure and, more importantly, some Dapper Dan hair grease. This week, we trace the brilliant parallels between this folk-tale odyssey and Homer's epic poem, looking at how Everett, Pete, and Delmar navigate sirens, a cyclops, and one very charismatic blind prophet. We appreciate the Grammy-winning, T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack that single-handedly revitalized bluegrass and old-timey music, and we marvel at George Clooney's pitch-perfect comedic performance as the fast-talking Ulysses Everett McGill. We also spend some time admiring Roger Deakins' groundbreaking, sepia-tinted cinematography that gives the whole film the warm, dusty feel of a living postcard from a bygone era.If you're a fan of quirky Coen Brothers humor, legendary soundtracks, or just want to hear us debate which of the three protagonists we'd actually trust to lead us to safety, this episode is a "bonafide" treat. We're blending our love for this cinematic treasure with our usual casual banter, making this one of our most harmonious Fan Jan entries yet. 25 years ago this month, the Coen brothers' Americana Odyssey "O Brother, Where Art Thou" was released in theaters. Music writer Allison Hussey discusses the soundtrack and its legacy as part of our Silver Liner Notes series, and listeners share their feelings about the film, and the soundtrack.

Tim Blake Nelson is a celebrated actor, writer, and director. His nearly 100 screen credits include “The Thin Red Line,” “Lincoln,” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” “Watchmen,” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” For his latest, the independent film “Bang Bang,” he plays an aging boxer whose glory days are long past. On this episode, he details how his process has changed by comparing the patience he has now to his approach for “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” where “fear inspired hubris” fueled him. He explains why it's the actor's job to retranslate poor direction, how his thirst for knowledge benefits his work, why he shows up on day one knowing the entire script inside and out. Plus he tells a few interesting stories about the Coen Brothers, hilarious ones about Terrence Malick, inspiring ones about directing Amanda Seyfried, and much much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

The show follows Mark Scout (Adam Scott – Parks and Recreation, Step Brothers), an employee at Lumon Industries who has undergone a mysterious “severance” procedure separating his work and personal memories into two distinct consciousnesses. In Episode 1 (“Good News About Hell”), we're introduced to Mark's eerie work environment, his co-workers Helly R. Join me (Anna Stone) and guest host Brandon Stone as we discuss 2000's O Brother, Where Art Thou. In this episode, we agree on our shared love of the soundtrack, Brandon teaches me something new about George Nelson, and I get real nerdy about the comparisons to The Odyssey. **Warning** There is a spoiler for Sinners towards the end in the modern casting. Apologies.
John Niven is a Scottish author and screenwriter known for his darkly comic, satirical novels. Born in Ayrshire in 1966, he studied English Literature at the University of Glasgow before spending a decade in the music industry. This experience inspired his breakout novel, Kill Your Friends (2008), a biting satire of the late-1990s music business. The book earned widespread acclaim for its brutal honesty and sharp wit, and was later adapted into a film for which Niven co-wrote the screenplay. His other works include The Amateurs, The Second Coming, Straight White Male, and O Brother, showcasing his distinctive blend of humour, cynicism, and moral insight. In addition to novels, Niven has written for film and journalism, often exploring themes of fame, failure, and modern hypocrisy. Known for his outspoken political views, Niven remains a provocative and influential voice in contemporary British literature and culture.

On today's episode we discuss a movie loosely based on The Odessey and nominated for 2 Oscars. This movie was the first adapted screenplay by the Coen Brothers and was called a hillbilly musical comedy adventure by John Turturo. It made Dapper Dan a household name, and turned "Man of Constant Sorrow" into a bluegrass banger for the new millennium. This is a free Demo--Full episode can be found at: patreon.com/c/RememberShuffleThe Shuffle Bois turn from the worst Classics adaptation of the 2000s (Troy) to what might be the best, the Coen Brothers' "O Brother Where Art Thou." After describing the source material - Homer's Odyssey - the bois give a plot summary of the Cohen brothers' southern folklore epic. They then discuss some themes of the film - the North's view of the South in 2000, the place of music in the film, and the various mythologies of the film. They close out, as always, with the echoes in the culture, looking forward to Christopher Nolan's 2026 Odyssey adaptation.
Shortly after graduating high school, Ed Gale — who stood 3'4” tall — left Michigan with $40 in his pocket and went to Hollywood. Gale said his goal was never to become a leading man, but to make a living as a working actor… and that he did, appearing in more than 200 television shows, commercials, and films. Upon arriving in Hollywood the first role he was offered was none other than Howard the Duck — a role he was originally told he was “too tall for.” Gale continued to work up until his passing in May of 2025.On this episode I'm recommending four films that Gale appeared in. In many of his acting roles (including most of these) Gale appeared wearing masks and costumes, but as Rollo from Under the Rainbow once said, “no dream is too big, and no dreamer too small.”Child's Play 2 (1990)Two years after the original hit theaters, Chucky returned to once again torment Andy Barclay. While the original Child's Play was straight horror, this is the film in which Chucky began to develop the personality we know and love today. Keep an eye out for scenes in which Chucky runs around; that's Ed Gale in costume.Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)Bill and Ted have a problem: despite being told they will eventually become the biggest band in the universe, they still don't know how to play their instruments and their girlfriends are fed up with them. Oh, and evil robots from the future have come back to murder them, so there's that. Featuring a stellar soundtrack and lots of jokes, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey did not perform as well as the original in theaters, but has become a cult classic since. Keep an eye out for Station in the film — that's Ed Gale!Spaceballs (1987)In this Mel Brooks masterpiece, Princess Vespa has been kidnapped by Dark Helmet and his cohorts and must be rescued by Lone Star and his faithful companion, Barf. If it all sounds a bit silly it is. Featuring an all-star cast and more Mel Brooks humor than you can swing a lightsaber at. Keep an eye out for Ed Gale as one of the Dinks, and may the Schwartz be with ya!O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)In this Coen Brothers film, three members of a chain gang escape when one of them tells the other two he's chained to that he knows where more than a million dollars worth of treasure is buried. Loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, this is another film with a star-studded cast and an award winning soundtrack. Ed Gale makes an appearance as “the Little Man” during an election and in this appearance, you can actually see his face! (After seeing it, you may recognize him from Bones, My Name is Earl, and many other roles.)Whether he appeared in a speaking role or in a costume, Gale gave every one of his roles 100% and swore people could see him smiling through the masks he wore. After watching these four films, you just might agree with him.Subscribe now to the Video Store Podcast to receive a lifetime supply of popcorn. Offer valid at any of our physical locations. Intro: 00:00:00-00:02:03 Sinners Discussion: 00:02:04-00:28:46 Connections: 00:28:47-1:02:37 Your Next Picture Show, next pairing, and goodbyes: 1:02-38-end Director Ryan Coogler has been generous in sharing his many points of inspiration for SINNERS, including the other film in this pairing, but his exceptional new feature is refreshingly singular in both vision and execution. It makes for an admittedly lopsided comparison with FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, but also an illuminating one: examining Coogler's vision through the lens of the 1996 Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino teamup sheds light on the added depth SINNERS brings to its own vampire mythology, criminal-brother protagonists, and mid-film genre shift. And in Your Next Picture Show, we briefly imagine the conversation we could have had if we'd instead paired SINNERS with the Coen brothers' O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? Please share your thoughts about FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SINNERS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
