On today's episode we discuss a movie loosely based on The Odessey and nominated for 2 Oscars.  This movie was the first adapted screenplay by the Coen Brothers and was called a hillbilly musical comedy adventure by John Turturo.  It made Dapper Dan a household name, and turned "Man of Constant Sorrow" into a bluegrass banger for the new millennium. After describing the source material - Homer's Odyssey - the bois give a plot summary of the Cohen brothers' southern folklore epic. They then discuss some themes of the film - the North's view of the South in 2000, the place of music in the film, and the various mythologies of the film. Shortly after graduating high school, Ed Gale — who stood 3'4” tall — left Michigan with $40 in his pocket and went to Hollywood. Gale said his goal was never to become a leading man, but to make a living as a working actor… and that he did, appearing in more than 200 television shows, commercials, and films. Upon arriving in Hollywood the first role he was offered was none other than Howard the Duck — a role he was originally told he was “too tall for.” Gale continued to work up until his passing in May of 2025.On this episode I'm recommending four films that Gale appeared in. In many of his acting roles (including most of these) Gale appeared wearing masks and costumes, but as Rollo from Under the Rainbow once said, “no dream is too big, and no dreamer too small.”Child's Play 2 (1990)Two years after the original hit theaters, Chucky returned to once again torment Andy Barclay. While the original Child's Play was straight horror, this is the film in which Chucky began to develop the personality we know and love today. Keep an eye out for scenes in which Chucky runs around; that's Ed Gale in costume.Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)Bill and Ted have a problem: despite being told they will eventually become the biggest band in the universe, they still don't know how to play their instruments and their girlfriends are fed up with them. Oh, and evil robots from the future have come back to murder them, so there's that. Featuring a stellar soundtrack and lots of jokes, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey did not perform as well as the original in theaters, but has become a cult classic since. Keep an eye out for Station in the film — that's Ed Gale!Spaceballs (1987)In this Mel Brooks masterpiece, Princess Vespa has been kidnapped by Dark Helmet and his cohorts and must be rescued by Lone Star and his faithful companion, Barf. If it all sounds a bit silly it is. Featuring an all-star cast and more Mel Brooks humor than you can swing a lightsaber at. Keep an eye out for Ed Gale as one of the Dinks, and may the Schwartz be with ya!O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)In this Coen Brothers film, three members of a chain gang escape when one of them tells the other two he's chained to that he knows where more than a million dollars worth of treasure is buried. Loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, this is another film with a star-studded cast and an award winning soundtrack. Ed Gale makes an appearance as “the Little Man” during an election and in this appearance, you can actually see his face! (After seeing it, you may recognize him from Bones, My Name is Earl, and many other roles.)Whether he appeared in a speaking role or in a costume, Gale gave every one of his roles 100% and swore people could see him smiling through the masks he wore. After watching these four films, you just might agree with him.Subscribe now to the Video Store Podcast to receive a lifetime supply of popcorn. Offer valid at any of our physical locations. We're here to break down the influences and sources of The Soggy Bottom Boys' biggest hit, "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow," along with every other song they perform in this movie. Those aren't really George Clooney's pipes you hear in the recording, but real-life singer Dan Tyminski is a man of constant praise in the bluegrass community. Did you know he had a Hot 100 hit in 2013? Also, Jacksfilms calls in to dispute the idea that this movie was based on Homer's Odyssey!

It makes for an admittedly lopsided comparison with FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, but also an illuminating one: examining Coogler's vision through the lens of the 1996 Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino teamup sheds light on the added depth SINNERS brings to its own vampire mythology, criminal-brother protagonists, and mid-film genre shift. And in Your Next Picture Show, we briefly imagine the conversation we could have had if we'd instead paired SINNERS with the Coen brothers' O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?   Please share your thoughts about FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SINNERS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. O brother! The name of God is of astonishing power. (But this name) the Lord Himself makes it heard (to a fortunate person). In this life full of conflicts, that person attains the name of God who remains in the presence of the Guru. 1. Stay.O brother! It cannot be told at what price the name of God can be obtained and how powerful this name is. Those people who have fixed their mind on the name of God are the fortunate ones. The person who accepts the advice of the Guru who never gets tired, that person constantly establishes the thought of the qualities of the Lord (within himself). But the Lord gives this thought only to the one on whom He Himself bestows. 1.O brother! We do every work of our lives only with the support of ego, (so when we think about it in our) mind (with wheat), then because of this ego, we are completely foolish. This ego can be removed (from within us) only by the grace of the Guru. (The Guru also unites) him on whom the Lord Himself bestows His grace. 2.(O brother! This worldly wealth of Maya (creates) great ego (in the mind of man). And, a man who remains immersed in ego does not attain respect (in the presence of the Lord). O brother! Leaving aside ego, one always remains in spiritual bliss. O brother! I, taking the advice of the Guru, keep praising and glorifying that ever-lasting Lord. 3.O brother! That Creator Himself creates (the entire creation); apart from Him there is no other (with such a state). The man whom the Creator connects (with His) ever-lasting Name, that man appears (in the remembrance of the Name). O Nanak! The person who meditates on the Name always remains in spiritual bliss (both in this world and) in the next world. 4.8.

It's time to examine Joseph-Smith-polygamy skepticism. After the recent Journal of Mormon Polygamy conference, we decided to seriously consider the evidences used by this cohort of Mormon studies, leading us to understand that polygamy was a creation of Brigham Young and the Utah Mormon movement. After that we discuss O Brother, Where Art Thou? An Oddessy movie interweaving many storytelling archetypes and tropes. Then some good news about automotive subsidies coming in the form of tariffs. In this episode I explore the unbearable headache disorder that is cluster headache. The podcast revolves around the risk factors and causes of cluster headache, and the triggers for the attacks. It also reviews the characteristic features of the headache, and its typical accompanying cranial autonomic and behavioural symptoms. I illustrate the agonising manifestations of cluster headache using such patient illness memoirs as those of John Niven titled O Brother, Howard fast titled Being Red, and Rafael Haussler titled You Can't See What I Feel. These narratives illustrate the characteristic features of cluster headache, from its abrupt onset, its diurnal pattern, its severity, and its tendency to recur in clusters.I also review the potential causes and familial tendency of cluster headache, its diverse triggers, and its impact on the lives of its sufferers. The podcast also covers the acute, transitional and preventative treatments of the disease which include the use of such interventions as triptans, oxygen, prednisolone, verapamil, and lithium.Using Mervyn Eadie's enlightening book titled Headache Through the Centuries, I narrate the history of its scientific understanding noting the contributions of physicians from Nicholas Tulp in the 16th century, to Wilfred Harris and Bayard Horton in the 19th century.

Episode 314: The Devil Makes Three has been one of roots music's outstanding if quiet success stories of the past twenty years. Formed in Santa Cruz, CA in 2001, they got out ahead of the O Brother phenomenon and built a unique, crowd-pleasing sound through a renegade admixture of early blues, hard country, gospel and punk rock. In this hour, founding singer and songwriter Pete Bernhard reflects on a career that's surprised him and, after a season of personal loss, the cathartic process behind the rather dark and candid album Spirits, their tenth as a band.

We've recently lost one of the great directors over the last few decades in David Lynch who was known for showing the dreamy and nightmarish side of America (and we need you now, David). The other great tellers of American stories over the same period have been Joel and Ethan Coen. They have protagonists who start out in precarious positions in life....then things go downhill. Welcome to episode 124 of See Hear Podcast. There's definitely a rhythm to the Coen Brothers' films....even if their films are not ABOUT music or musicians, they feel musical (and having Carter Burwell score many of their films doesn't hurt in that regard). Two films, however, stick out as music films in their catalogue – O Brother, Where Art Thou and Inside Llewyn Davis – it's the latter that is the focus of this episode. Sadly, neither Kerry nor Tim were available to record this show, but I welcome back film professor, author, and fellow podcaster Neil Fox back to the show. He selected Inside Llewyn Davis for our discussion, and I couldn't have been happier to revisit this 2013 film that has seemingly divided people on its merits (spoiler alert – we both love it). The film starts off in Greenwich Village in 1961, and is about a few days in the life of folk musician Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) as he moves from couch to couch, gig to gig, kindness to kindness....and he responds poorly despite being the recipient of others' good nature towards him. Is he an awful human being, or is he lashing out due to a terrible event regarding a former musical partner? Neil and I had a great conversation about this film and a variety of related issues. Since the film is Bob Dylan adjacent, we had to bring in our thoughts about the recently released Dylan biopic focusing on his early years, A Complete Unknown and see how its tone contrasts with the Coens outlook. I am grateful for Neil giving over his time to chat with me. He brings a perspective I was fascinated to hear. We had the pleasure of working with him on O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?, and we had a wonderful time catching up with him. We learn all about his journey from Oklahoma to his first breaks as an actor, and we discuss the artistic and academic foundation that informs his choices as a filmmaker. James and Tim both studied the classics in college, and they compare their Latin and Greek syllabi and reflect on how they still draw from what they learned during their education. Picking the subject back up later in the episode, we also learn the truth behind the apocryphal myth as to whether anyone actually read Homer's Odyssey before shooting O BROTHER. Tim later reflects on his parallel career as a playwright, and we learn why he doesn't direct his own plays as he muses on the different demands of conceptualizing a story for the stage versus one for the screen. Later, we discuss his career as a director, and Tim shares his increasingly difficult experiences funding his independent films. Towards the end, we discuss his recent role as the star of his son's feature debut, ASLEEP IN MY PALM, and we ask Tim about his recent novel, CITY OF BLOWS, and learn how the story was inspired by Tim's real experiences in Hollywood during the COVID-19 pandemic. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure
