Finding Success Beyond the Stage: Sonia Kostich's Inspiring Career Transition

Her Success Story

This week Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Sonia Kostich. The two talk about Sonia's unique merger of arts and finance, her role in fostering artistic talent at Baryshnikov Arts, and the importance of building relationships and support systems in every career phase.  In this episode, we discuss: How Sonia Kostich transitioned from a professional ballet dancer to a career in finance, going to college at 42 and working at Goldman Sachs. What inspired her to reinvent herself and pursue a new path after a successful 20-year career in dance. When Sonia made the decision to take the next step in her life and focus on education and a new career direction. Why Sonia believes keeping strong relationships and a support network is crucial, especially during major life transitions. How the skills and discipline from a dance career can translate into success in the business world. The importance of staying open to possibilities and being willing to step into the unknown as part of personal and professional growth. Sonja Kostich- Executive Director of Baryshnikov Arts brings with her both the knowledge and experience of having been a professional dancer for over two decades as well as significant business acumen derived from her business education and time working at Goldman Sachs. Through a unique and successful professional trajectory, she now merges her artistic and business experience as an arts leader. Ms. Kostich was hired by Mikhail Baryshnikov at the age of 17 to join American Ballet Theatre from The School of Classical Ballet, the training school for ABT created by Mr. Baryshnikov, consisting of only seven female students and five male students. She later danced with the San Francisco Ballet and the Zurich Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, and in multiple collaborations with opera/theater director Peter Sellars, before co-founding OtherShore, which she co-directed for six years. Her experience in ballet, contemporary, and modern dance resulted in a diverse international career that spanned across artistic disciplines.  Upon retiring from dancing, Ms. Kostich returned to school, obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting and Business Communication from Zicklin School of Business, CUNY Baruch College, where she graduated Salutatorian at the age of 42. Following, she began a full-time position at Goldman Sachs in the Finance Division with a focus on regulatory capital requirements. Simultaneously she obtained an MA in Arts Administration, eventually returning to the dance world, first as the finance manager at Mark Morris Dance Group and then as program manager at New York City Center. From 2018 to 2022, she served as the Chief Executive and Artistic Officer at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a 153-acre artist sanctuary located in Tivoli, NY, where she led the successful rebrand and revitalization of the over 30-year organization, bringing it to award-winning status for its significant artistic and economic contributions to the Hudson Valley.  In October 2022, Ms. Kostich joined Baryshnikov Arts as its new Executive Director. As a female Korean American, born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in Minnesota, her history, both personal and professional, lends itself to cultivating and supporting new perspectives as Baryshnikov Arts expands its capacity to create multi-platform and collaborative havens for artistic expression, innovation and freedom and especially as we commit further to elevating and sharing the stories of artists of diverse cultures and histories. My guest for Episode #524 of the Lean Blog Interviews Podcast is John Willis, an accomplished IT management expert with over 45 years of experience. His extensive body of work includes contributions to Deming's Journey to Profound Knowledge and co-authoring The DevOps Handbook. See video, transcript, and more Hosts a podcast that I was recently on, "Profound." John focuses his current research on DevOps, DevSecOps, IT risk, modern governance, and audit compliance. Over the course of his career, he has sold companies to Docker and Dell, and he played a foundational role at Opscode (now Chef). In addition, John founded Gulf Breeze Software, an award-winning IBM business partner recognized for its successful deployment of Tivoli technology for enterprise clients. He has authored six IBM Redbooks on enterprise systems management and served as the founder and chief architect of Chain Bridge Systems. Altogether, John has written more than 11 books and launched over 10 startups, cementing his reputation as a significant innovator in the IT industry. In this episode, the discussion navigates the intersection of lean principles, agile methodologies, and Deming's philosophies as they apply to modern IT and operations. John delves into how systems thinking, profound knowledge, and psychological safety underpin effective incident management and cybersecurity practices. The conversation explores practical challenges and the proactive strategies necessary for integrating legacy improvement methods with today's cloud innovations and infrastructure as code. Throughout the episode, John examines the real-world application of these timeless principles, offering listeners actionable insights into continuous improvement and risk management. He highlights the importance of questioning established norms and embracing complexity to drive operational excellence, providing a compelling roadmap for navigating the evolving digital landscape. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: Could you share your origin story regarding Lean and continuous improvement--specifically, what you learned during your early years at Exxon? How have you seen Deming's principle of eliminating fear put into practice in IT and entrepreneurial settings? Is the phenomenon you described established fact or more of a hypothesis? How can we confirm or measure the validity of that knowledge? Why do you consider cyber terrorism one of today's most significant threats? This podcast is part of the #LeanCommunicators network.

random Wiki of the Day

rWotD Episode 2863: Forfun Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Thursday, 6 March 2025 is Forfun.Forfun was a Brazilian alternative rock band which reached the peak of its popularity in the mid- to late 2000s. Formed in Rio de Janeiro in 2001, their initial line-up comprised vocalist/guitarist Danilo Cutrim, bassist Vítor Isensee and drummer Bruno Tizé. By 2002, Tizé left the band and was replaced by Nicholas Christ, while Isensee switched his position with Rodrigo Costa to become second guitarist. Their first shows were frequently attended by the sons of then-Deputy (and future President) Jair Bolsonaro, Eduardo and Carlos, who were personal friends of the bandmembers; Eduardo would later cameo in the music video for "História de Verão". They released in 2003 the demo album Das Pistas de Skate às Pistas de Dança, which was a significant underground hit, and in 2005 their official debut, Teoria Dinâmica Gastativa, produced by Liminha, came out through Universal Music Group.Following the release of Polisenso (2008) and Alegria Compartilhada (2011), which counted with guest appearances by rapper Black Alien and big band Funk Como Le Gusta, the group reached further proeminence due to their nominations to the MTV Video Music Brazil award in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012; in the 2005 edition, they performed a cover of Ultraje a Rigor's "Nós Vamos Invadir Sua Praia" alongside Leela, Ramirez and Dibob, with whom they would develop a strong friendship. In 2012 they collaborated on the song "Rio Porque Tô no Rio", described as an ode to Rio de Janeiro. In 2007, they collaborated on the eighth album by Santos-based band Charlie Brown Jr., Ritmo, Ritual e Responsa, co-writing and performing the track "O Universo a Nosso Favor". On February 13 and 14 of the same year, they participated in a show organized by MTV Brasil alongside Fresno, Hateen, Moptop and NX Zero; a live album of the performance would be released soon after, titled MTV ao Vivo: 5 Bandas de Rock.In 2013, they released the DVD Forfun ao Vivo no Circo Voador, recorded on December 20, 2012, and which counted with guest appearances by their friends from Dibob, Toni Garrido of Cidade Negra and Dead Fish vocalist Rodrigo Lima. The DVD contains three studio tracks recorded as extras: "Ahorita", "Malícia" and "Terra de Cego".Their final studio album, Nu, came out in 2014. The following year they announced they would be ceasing their activities; Rodrigo Costa would elaborate in a 2019 interview that the major reason of the band's end was that he was veering from their initial "left-wing ideals", causing a rift between him and his colleagues. In 2016, Cutrim, Isensee and Christ formed a new project, Braza, and alongside former members of Dibob and Ramirez, Costa founded the group Tivoli. In 2022, they released the DVD Forfun ao Vivo na Fundição, originally recorded on December 12, 2015, at the last show of their farewell tour. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Thursday, 6 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Forfun on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Stephen.

Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Sonja Kostich In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey chats with Sonja Kostich, the president and executive director of Baryshnikov Arts. Sonia shares her inspiring journey from her early years in dance, through her transition from a professional dancer to a career in finance, and ultimately to her current role in arts administration. The conversation highlights the importance of collaboration in the arts, the challenges of career transitions, and the innovative programming at Baryshnikov Arts that supports artists in their creative processes. Sonia emphasizes the value of taking risks and stepping outside of one's comfort zone to discover new opportunities in life and art.  Sonja Kostich brings with her both the knowledge and experience of having been a professional dancer for over two decades as well as significant business acumen derived from her business education and time working at Goldman Sachs. Her experience in ballet, contemporary, and modern dance resulted in a diverse international career that spanned across artistic disciplines.Upon retiring from dancing, Ms. From 2018 to 2022, she served as the Chief Executive and Artistic Officer at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a 153-acre artist sanctuary located in Tivoli, NY, where she led the successful rebrand and revitalization of the 30+ year organization, bringing it to award-winning status for its significant artistic and economic contributions to the Hudson Valley.
