Episode 314: The Devil Makes Three has been one of roots music's outstanding if quiet success stories of the past twenty years. Formed in Santa Cruz, CA in 2001, they got out ahead of the O Brother phenomenon and built a unique, crowd-pleasing sound through a renegade admixture of early blues, hard country, gospel and punk rock. In this hour, founding singer and songwriter Pete Bernhard reflects on a career that's surprised him and, after a season of personal loss, the cathartic process behind the rather dark and candid album Spirits, their tenth as a band.

This week the Tahoe TAP podcast brings you The Devil Makes Three which is headlining WinterWonderGrass music festival - the 8th annual alpine celebration of bluegrass music and springtime in the Sierra being held April 5 – April 7, 2024, at the Palisades Tahoe Resort in Olympic Valley, California. The Devil Makes Three is an Americana band known for their unique blend of “bluegrass” which is described on their website as wandering folk, Delta blues, whiskey-soaked ragtime, and reckless rock ‘n' roll. Their lyrics often explore themes of love, loss, addiction, and the darker aspects of life, drawing from both traditional folk music and contemporary storytelling. The band formed in 2002 in Santa Cruz, California, and consists of Pete Bernhard (guitar, vocals), Lucia Turino (upright bass, vocals), and Cooper McBean (guitar, banjo, vocals). One of the defining characteristics of The Devil Makes Three's music is their raw and energetic live performances, often featuring intricate vocal harmonies and skillful instrumentation. You can witness them LIVE at WinterWonderGrass on Saturday, April 6th, 2024!
WARNING: This interview contains spoilers to the movies Najarra Townsend is such a wonderful actress; I am still star struck from speaking to her about her role as Samantha in two of my favorite films. If anyone has not seen these two films, I highly recommend watching them because Najarra carries the role as Samantha throughout the entire movies making the audience connect with her, helping the viewers understand what she is experiencing which made me develop a soft spot for Samantha. Envision someone who was wrongfully subjected to someone's guilty pleasure. Samantha goes through the stages of grief, loss, and anger and yet she continues her life as if nothing ever happened. And yet, the assailant is never identified or caught. That's a bit damn frustrating if you ask me. What does this movie and Najarra's character represent? Are the movies representations or metaphors of the dangers of unprotected sex? How are STDs easily spread if you are not cautious? It depends on how you look at it from director's and writer's perspective. Overall, both films are excellent, and I would love to see a third adaptation to carry on from the first two. If you are into zombies and someone who is hellbent on getting revenge, these movies are definitely for you. Be sure to follow Najarra Townsend on Instagram and check out her posts; she will be starring in three new horror films: The Devil Makes Three, NFT, and Bits. She is a VERY talented actress, and I would love to see her in a lot more movies and I would love to see her win more awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message
Sam has covid, but it's been a good four-year run of not getting it, and it's an easy way to remember it's our fourth anniversary of buying the Book Shop. We start off this week with a little look back on things we didn't expect when we got into this mess (why are publishers so mean? How do you stock all the books that people want?), and then launch into a book discussion proper. First up is Lois Lowry's classic, "The Giver," which is an absolute banger that you need to read right now if you haven't already. And probably even if you have. Second is Hannah's effort to brand "Joan January," whereby she reads Joan Didion at the beginning of each year, and this year it's "A Book of Common Prayer," an odd little novel from the 1970s that reminds Hannah of Gatsby and would be a good book club book. Then Sam is back in middle school for "The Glass Sentence." by S.E. Grove, which is a triumph and he was happy to read again. Magic maps! We're doing a whole new paragraph now, because next up is "A Love Song for Ricki Wilde," by Tia Williams, for which we have no transition, but Hannah is listening to and loves the dialog. Great V-Day book. And it's got a little vodou, just like "Devil Makes Three," which Sam didn't get and stopped reading. Oh well. You might like it if you like Haitian history and the CIA. Luckily, Hannah has just read most of "The Orchard," by Adele Crockett Robertson, which she really likes, and is based in Ipswich, and features a much more realistic badass woman. Finally, we finish up with some Pullman, some Winter Institute, and some self-promotion. Don't miss it! (Also, at the end, there is a rare instance where Sam actually remembers something correctly, and Hannah is wrong.)
On Monday's show: Since December, some Houstonians have been experiencing major mail delivery delays, which the Postal Service says may not be resolved anytime soon. Houston Chronicle reporter Peter Warren explains why we're seeing delays here (and not elsewhere) and what it has to do with the post office's long-term plans. Also this hour: Texas writer Ben Fountain talks about what the nation of Haiti has to tell the rest of the world about looming issues that may affect us. Fountain's longtime interest in the history and plight of Haiti has influenced his latest novel, Devil Makes Three, which he discusses at an Inprint event tonight. Then, veterinarian Dr. Lori Teller answers your pet care questions. And we get an update on Houston sports from Jeff Balke.
Sam is just back from Dallas, where he visited Interabang Books and learned of Dallas writer Ben Fountain, and so has his brand-new "Devil Makes Three," instead of a Larry McMurtry book. In the meantime, Hannah has read the new Kelly Link, "The Book of Love," which she is big-time into ("It was so. good."), which leads into a discussion of why we like books about magic, including magic and dragons, like the new "Murtagh," after a quick sidebar on Hannah's twisted ankle. That leads to talk about books on airplanes, books that 17-year-old boys like, the NYT 10 best books of the year, and then the very-well-narrated new Kiley Reid audiobook, "Come and Get It." Sophomore efforts can be difficult, but the book did get Hannah to say "denouement." Finally, a quick note about a great book for family purchases, which leads to a chat about the Newbury Medal-winning "The Eyes & the Impossible," which Sam really liked. Oh, also, George Harrison was kinda weird.

EXPLICIT CONTENT AND PARENTAL WARNINGThis episode uses adult language and discusses addiction and suicide. Parental discretion is advised. If you're new to our podcast you may be thinking we have it in for the Kansas City Fire Department since we seem to gravitate towards stories surrounding strange goings on in that organization. Then this happens. We just this week learned the results of a lawsuit filed in 2018 by KCFD Paramedic Giovanna Vittori who had been reassigned due to a traumatic incident. While many of us applaud the organization for taking this step, what happened next turns our stomachs. The supervisor she was assigned to, according to the lawsuit, terrorized Giovanna by constantly reminding her of the event and "trying to make her deny it happened."The guys discuss the clearly marked line between good fun, hazing and bullying (no it isn't) and they can't seem to escape how something that started so positively ended so poorly. You see, even though Giovanna won the case in the end, it didn't happen until after her apparent suicide. She was found near a fitness report that had been reportedly altered by the Department and an eviction notice. We will never know the demons others are facing.Justin shares a lyric from a song that seems appropriate:You've got your hunger and some problems that are real, and you're dealing with some demons who are driving you insane, and I've seen them drag you screaming down the hallways of your brain. - The Devil Makes Three "Chase that Feeling"While the song mainly addresses addiction, the symbolism of being dragged away by demons seems accurate here. She was reassigned for a good reason, then everything went wrong. We like to say that no one knows what we are going through but some of us seem very fast to assume what others are going through. On our minds this week:Being able to look back and realize we were not our best in the momentCreating neighborhoods of commonality we can feel seen inHow easy it is to destroy those around us if we simply ignore realityWhy so many things could have saved Giovanna, but didn'tSupport the showJoin our Facebook Community!Buy us a beer!Email Us! We're back after a week of Spring Break! In honor of our 10th episode, Gab ran 10 miles this weekend - or maybe it was another reason. Her and Chris discuss the Broad Street Run, and what books they are reading this year. Before they begin Book Club, they are joined by author Tori Bovalino. Tori joins to discuss her debut novel The Devil Makes Three, her sophomore album Not Good For Maidens, due out next month and her anthology series The Gathering Dark, due out later this year. Sounds like she has a lot of free time! Tori also discusses Imposter Syndrome, what goes in to writing a novel, and the Proper Way to Spell Things: US vs Great Britain style. Part 2 of 2. The necromancers are done being the Devil's playthings but a bargain is a bargain. They owe the dark one another movie and it's a good one. Bret's pick, Constantine, is up! It's no secret how much he loves Keanu's take on the character but does Hellblazer fan Shira feel the same way? Listen to find out and then stick around the rom com remixes inspired by DC's most chaotic bisexual.

Horror and fantasy as demons come alive.
Marissa chats with Tori Bovalino about her debut young adult novel - THE DEVIL MAKES THREE - as well as tapping into your own fears in order to write effective horror and really scare your readers; treating your setting as its own character, and using real-life locations to hone in on atmospheric details; how completing higher education can change our creative process and impact our career goals; some ways that classic literature can inspire us, and perhaps encourage a bit more sarcasm and wit; and some suggestions for including religious elements in your story without imposing specific beliefs on the work. Books discussed in this episode can be purchased from your local independent bookstore or buy them online from the Happy Writer bookshop.org store (that benefits indie bookstores) at https://bookshop.org/shop/marissameyer

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateVermont-born Pete Bernhard (Devil Makes Three) was raised surrounded by art as all the adults in his life were either visual or musical artists. While his friends were obsessing over Metallica and Megadeath, Pete was captivated by old blues musicians. He found common ground with Cooper McBean growing up, who loved the same music he did and ended up becoming lifelong friends and musical partners in Devil Makes Three. Influenced by old blues and folk along with the energy they felt at punk shows they saw as teens, the pair made it their mission to create a fun, energetic live show in their performances. Devil Makes Three came together after Pete and Cooper moved to Santa Cruz, CA and teamed up with Lucia Turino. They toured and became and established band in the Americana world (and for some reason, the Jam band scene?).Pete and I talk about his draw and interest in darker subject matter, particularly drugs and the opioid crisis. We also talk about Brown Bird, a band from Rhode Island that was very close with DM3 until the death of frontman David Lamb a few years back. Since then, David's widow and bandmate, MorganEve Swain has joined DM3 while Lucia takes a break from the road. And finally, we discuss how his new solo album, Harmony Ascension Division, features songs about friends he had in his teens and 20's. The record features Pete playing quietly, which is unlike a DM3 album and more reminiscent of his style when he first start playing music at that age: teens and 20's. Pete's thoughtful, generous and kind during this interview. Hope you enjoy! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
