“If I hadn't have known that was Anthrax, I would have guessed it was Alice In Chains…” The early 90's was a strange time for metal, most notably due to the change in the musical landscape with the emergence of the Seattle scene and Alice In Chains becoming one of the key crossover bands to bridge the transition from thrash to the next wave of darker, grungier sounding heavy metal. “Every time you do that, I have a less chance of getting laid…” While ANTHRAX began the 90's with a much darker and angrier sound on Persistence of Time, the darkness and heaviness of their sound would become further amplified with the departure of Joey Belladonna and the addition of JOHN BUSH (formerly of Armored Saint) on vocals, resulting in a new era of Anthrax: BUSHTHRAX! With more grit and heft in the vocals than before, the JOHN BUSH ERA of ANTHRAX is definitely a different flavor than the band's output throughout the 80's with Joey Belladonna, and with the changing of the guard in the early 90's due to the growing popularity of the Seattle sound, the time was right for a slight alteration to the thrashier sounds of 80's era ThrashThrax, resulting in the darker, more aggressive BUSHTHRAX era that would follow for the next decade or so. “Alright, well it's not like we've never done that for you before…” Always remember that “springtime LSD is the best time for LSD” and that “it's not as fun for me when I push away”. Realize that “girls with Doc Martens are kinda cute (except for when they wear ‘patrouli')” and imagine what it'd be like “if we bled out of our dicks for a week” when you JOIN US for some 90's era ANTHRAX featuring JOHN BUSH, aka BUSHTHRAX!!! https://slasrpodcast.com/ SLASRPodcast@gmail.com Welcome to Episode 223 of the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue podcast. This week we're joined by Dave, who's back with us and may or may not finally decide whether he's going public with his last name. We've got some follow-up on Great Britain versus the United Kingdom, more coyote talk as mating season ramps up and how not to get yourself in trouble, a little animal-track trivia now that winter actually showed up, and some positive feedback on Stomp's return. We've got listener shoutouts, including some love for Dave's PSAs, a funny comment about Mike's snow sculpture on Tecumseh, updates on our Alzheimer's 48 Peaks plans — including a potential Mount Adams hike — and a look at what's been happening around New Hampshire with rescues on Camel's Hump, avalanche incidents on Mount Washington, a disturbing number of snowmobile press releases, and new technology being used in long-term missing person cases as we mark the anniversary of Maura Murray's disappearance. Nationally, we'll talk about a K-9 finding a missing child during a bomb cyclone, fatal ski accidents out west and in Europe, and why this winter seems determined to remind people that mountains don't care about your Instagram plans. Plus, we've got gear talk, a dad joke, a music minute featuring Great Grandpa, recent hikes, future plans, and — in our main segment — Dave brings us the wild and surprisingly dark legend of the Silver Virgin Madonna, a New England treasure story that sits right at the intersection of frontier warfare, folklore, and wishful thinking. Sein aktueller Song-Contest-Favorit ist "What the Hell Just Happend" von Remember Monday. In der Kleinen Geschichte am Schluss erzählt Simon von Ausfällen. https://slasrpodcast.com/ SLASRPodcast@gmail.com Welcome to Episode 222 of the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue Podcast, where this week we've got a packed show — we're talking winter conditions in the White Mountains, some SAR news, big news out of Lincoln Woods with trail closures coming for several weeks. Also - Stomp is back and has stories from snowmobile guiding a near-death moment, moose encounters, and some rumors floating around about a possible shoulder-season live show. Plus we've got news out of England involving people behaving badly, a winter gear check-in with Nick's new Black Diamond Mercury Mitts, favorite cold-weather trail foods, and a reminder that if your wool isn't as warm as it used to be… We'll do some pop-culture talk, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and a rundown of some early Oscar buzz movies, we'll talk about beer, recent hikes, future plans, and we've got another great batch of listener hikes of the week. And for a history segment, we're going way back — we're digging into early Appalachian Mountain Club field meetings and what hiking looked like in the late 1800s when it was very much a group sport, with large organized excursions, committee oversight, and post-hike reporting that sounds nothing like modern hiking culture. All that plus sponsors, donations, stickers, swag, and everything else you've come to expect. This episode of The Sidebar Podcast moves fluidly between humor, reflection, and sharp cultural critique. The conversation starts light before expanding into what adulthood really looks like — from making friends after 30 to navigating social spaces that feel increasingly hollow. The episode interrogates pretty privilege, empty packaging, and the ways society keeps people distracted from what's actually connected beneath the surface. As the tone deepens, the discussion turns to state power, violence, and collective blind spots — asking why certain realities are harder for some people to recognize. From creative exploitation to disagreement being mislabeled as hate, the episode challenges listeners to sit with discomfort rather than scroll past it.It's layered, unfiltered, and very Sidebar.0:00 — Intro (speaking Spanish)2:00 — Making friends over 305:20 — Optionally chopped10:52 — Pretty privilege, no personality, empty package12:40 — Society is a distraction18:54 — Pretti killed by ICE24:36 — It's all connected — why don't white people get that?33:30 — Close run-ins with the toilet47:54 — Why can't we disagree without it being called hating?51:00 — Creativity gets exploited1:04:03 — Why didn't we call them out? Episode 37 - A clap, a Slap and a StompWhat actually is musical time? In this episode, Steve kicks off 2026 with the first four days of his “12 Days of Listening” mini-series — all about pulse, groove, and how our brains latch onto patterns (sometimes to our advantage, sometimes not). Then we jump to Wilton's Music Hall (January 2025) for a live guest spot from Aluá Nascimento — Brazilian percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, and former STOMP cast member — starting with a trumpet + pandeiro duet on “Brazil” and expanding into body percussion, Afro-Brazilian rhythm traditions, and the wonderfully low-tech joy of making music out of whatever's around.Along the way, Aluá talks about growing up around capoeira, how culture and history shaped these sounds, and demonstrates instruments including berimbau (musical bow), caxixi (shaker), and pandeiro — with a bit of audience participation thrown in too.In this episodeA practical listening upgrade: pulse vs rhythm (try it while walking)“The pocket”: groove as micro-timing, not just the patternWhy your brain is basically a pattern-hunting drummerShared time / entrainment: why humans sync up (and why it matters in music)Live at Wilton's: trumpet + pandeiro on “Brazil”Aluá's story: capoeira roots, Afro-Brazilian traditions, and the STOMP yearsInstruments you'll hear: body percussion, pandeiro, berimbau, caxixi (and more)Find AluáInstagramBeat Goes On (bio + workshops)Watch: Aluá Nascimento & Helene Jank – Body Music (YouTube)Also in this episodeSteve mentions Episode 36 (breaking down how the My Friend Maisy theme was made)Wilton's Music Hall shows: 24th January — kids/family show at 2pm, evening show at 7pmSupport the showExplore episodes, transcripts, and more: originofthepieces.comJoin the Patreon: patreon.com/StevePrettyOnTheOriginofthePiecesIf you enjoyed this one, share it with a musically curious human (it helps more than you'd think)Stay musically curious! On stage at the school assembly, second-grade Mike got stuck for 30 seconds saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Every eye on him. Then: a rush. Not relief—an actual high. "I got through it. I did it." Today Mike Liben is CEO of Chai Travel, leading meetings, closing deals, and proving substance beats style every time. When the Brooklyn DA suggested Mike avoid the courtroom, Mike was resolute: "I'll say what I need to say. And they'll listen." He took the harder path—and it made him stronger. Judges started requesting him. Not despite his stutter. Because of what he brought. Every leader can learn from Mike: The best communicators aren't the smoothest talkers. They're the most prepared. Whether you stutter or not, this proves speaking with confidence comes from knowing what you have to say matters more than how you say it. IN THIS EPISODE: Why preparation and substance beat smooth delivery every time (courtroom lessons for every leader) The "rush" after doing hard things - and what it teaches about building confidence How to navigate difficult conversations when the stakes are high Barry Liben's intensity - how the same force that was sometimes tough for young Mike also became his model for resilience Why judges preferred Mike in court (hint: it wasn't his fluency!) What Mike learned about leadership from watching his father refuse to let physical limitations win How stuttering built the empathy that makes Mike a better CEO The business principles behind Chai Travel's success What every professional can learn about speaking with confidence in meetings, presentations, and executive conversations ABOUT OUR GUEST: Mike Liben is CEO of Chai Travel, a family-founded travel agency built on the legacy of his father, Barry Liben. Before entering the travel industry, Mike spent 11 years as a prosecuting attorney in the Brooklyn District Attorney's office, specializing in domestic violence cases. Despite stuttering since childhood, Mike chose the courtroom over desk work - and became the prosecutor judges requested. Mike lives with his wife and children, carrying forward his father's philosophy of treating everyone like family. TIMESTAMPS 0:00 Mike's obsession with substance over style 1:21 Welcome to TranscendingX 2:06 What doesn't show up on Mike's resume 5:26 On stage at the school assembly: The Pledge of Allegiance moment 8:02 The "rush" after hard moments—building confidence through action 9:42 Doing hard things builds the capacity for leadership 10:01 The worst advice: "Stomp your foot while stuttering" 10:49 "Did you forget your name?"—what people still get wrong 13:15 The complicated father-son dynamic 16:25 Barry's frustration: "I want my money back" 17:14 What changed: Seeing the stuttering community 19:39 Barry's mobility challenges: Modeling relentless determination 22:41 Bar mitzvah speech: When fluency went "off the rails" 27:03 "I think I'm done with therapy"—choosing his own path 31:50 Growing up in Barry Liben's shadow 32:02 Why Mike chose to become an attorney despite stuttering 33:48 Courtroom lesson: The best attorneys are the most prepared 35:23 The DA's suggestion: "Maybe avoid the courtroom" 36:13 Mike's resolute response: "I'll say what I need to say. This episode drops on the last day of 2025 so I've invited my colleague and All About Beer co-owner Andy Crouch on to talk about the year that was for our media company and what we have planned for the year ahead. Journalism, like the beer industry, is in a difficult spot. We know you rely on good news and information just like you do a quality pint. Supporting your local brewery is important, so is supporting the sites and shows you believe in and trust. From podcasts to articles to events, this was an eventful year for All About Beer. We were honored by both the British Guild of Beer Writers and the North American Guild of Beer Writers. And were able to pay writers, editors, photographers, and illustrators for great original work. AllAboutBeer.com/support is where you can check out ways to keep us rolling through 2026 and beyond. We know times are tough for a lot of people, so I appreciate your willingness to help. We're headed on the road in Spring 2026! Sign up to be the first to know our tour cities and dates and ticket access! https://forms.gle/zFmxCUNBN2SX42yU7"Because this was the second week they were filming, I probably had 700 voicemails minimum from the network." If the Productions calls to Christi are any indication of how things are going on in the second half of "Abby Got Served", it's not good! As the ALDC heads to Detroit for Energy Dance, they're not only up against Jeanette and Ava who are looking for payback, they're struggling openly with Abby's continued disrespect of her own team.At the competition Abby and Jeanette are almost immediately at each other's throats, first with Abby rebuffing JC Broadway Dance Academy's greeting and then with Jeanette unsuccessfully attempting to make peace with Abby before things get underway. Instead Abby breaks the cardinal rule of going backstage to keep an eye on Jeanette and eventually starts taunting Ava. This brings out Energy Dance head Gina who gets into it with Abby over her unprofessionalism. Not to be outdone, Holly also gets into a major fight with Abby. Holly addresses the photoshoot issue from earlier in the week directly to Abby, and Abby begins to insinuate that Nia needs her more than she needs Nia. But a line was clearly crossed and Holly becomes more angry than we've ever seen on the show to date.At the very least the girls put on an incredible showcase this week with their performance of Stomp the Yard. Somehow despite a truly weird gimmick and much hand wringing over how bad the jumpsuits were, it's arguably one of the best dances in ALDC history! And hey, not only do we get no more Christi and Kelly flack next episode, it's also Jojo's ALDC debut next week! Things might not be looking good at the ALDC, but they're looking better at the Barre!Quotes“I did talk to one 3D person this week. Well that's good." (02:35-02:39 | Christi & Kelly)“Please don't take anything I say as medical advice. Please consult WebMD like a good person." (10:26-10:32 | Christi)“When people ask me if there was anything nice, yes. When Chloe was three she was Abby's screensaver for a while, and then Broadway Baby replaced her, which is fine!" (29:08-29:15 | Christi & Kelly)“I've never known that woman to take the high road in my life. She's like hold on, is there a road that goes under? Like a sub-road that's underneatht he road itself? I wanna go on that road!"
