From Pound, VA, Brayden Mullins started his music journey at the age of 17 in his bedroom. He drew in-spiration from many artists such as Keith Whitley, The Stanley Brothers and James King. While bluegrass was a main drawing to music for Brayden he also listened to artists such as Pink Floyd, Korn, Alison Krauss and Townes Van Zandt to name a few. The lyrics and stories behind songs is what makes music come alive according to Brayden.Brayden aims to captivate the mind and ear of the audience with his songs. He wants his songs to challenge the thinking of those who hear them and for them to fully understand the message behind what is being said. His debut album “Unfamiliar Writings” fully encompasses this with his 8 originals tracks. These songs have only two instruments (acoustic guitar and fiddle), but they will bring you through the life of those within the songs.
This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with Erin Osmon, an award-winning, Los Angeles-based music journalist, critic, and author. She's written long-form album notes for archival releases on Blondie, Hüsker Dü, Townes Van Zandt, Sparklehorse, and many others. A veteran of Chicago newsrooms, her work appears in Rolling Stone, LA Times, New York Times, Washington Post, and other publications of record. She is part-time faculty at USC's Annenberg School of journalism. Her new book, about heartland rock in the 1980s, will be published by W.W. Norton in 2026. Her first book, Jason Molina: Riding with the Ghost — the focus of this episode — was published in 2017 and named a Best Music Book of the year by Pitchfork. Her book about John Prine's landmark debut album was published by Bloomsbury's 33 1/3 series. In Jason Molina: Riding with the Ghost, Erin presents a detailed, human account of the Rust Belt–born musician Jason Molina — a visionary, prolific, and at times cantankerous singer-songwriter with an autodidactic style that captivated his devoted fans. It details Molina's personal trials and triumphs and reveals for the first time the true story of his last months and works. Offering unfettered access to the mind and artistry of Molina through exclusive interviews with family, friends, and collaborators, the book also explores the Midwest music underground and the development of Bloomington, Indiana–based label Secretly Canadian. As the first authorized and detailed account of this prolific songwriter and self-mythologizer, Riding with the Ghost provides readers with unparalleled insight into Molina's tormented life and the fascinating Midwest musical underground that birthed him. In this episode host Michael Shields and Erin Osmon discuss how Molina's deep ties and affinity to the state that birthed him (Ohio) shaped his life and influenced his career. They explore Molina's surprising and varied musical influences, the comparison to singer-songwriter Will Oldham which shadowed Molina throughout his career, the birth of the timeless classic album that is Magnolia Electric Co., and so much more. Spring is knock-knock-knocking…and our Supreme Court is push-push-pushing back on the idea of Emperor Grandpa McFuddlepants. And why not? They created it. But here, we're busy painting the town with hope and there's a sense that there's something in the air as this week's show leans on the fabric of Americana sounds to get us through yet another week of hate speech from Pennsylvania Avenue. We'll apply an salve of sweet sounds from Jerry Garcia, Jackie Wilson, Townes Van Zandt, Billie Holiday, and that late local luminary and bard about town Dan Hicks in this week's show. It's a free form dance we're taking on so I hope you make time or, if you can't catch us live on KOWS, you can catch up on our archives posted on Podomatic at https://deeperroots.podomatic.com
Join us as we discuss "Without Getting Killed or Caught," a fantastic documentary about the life of Guy Clark (and Susanna Clark and Townes Van Zandt). Also, Vinnie Stigma, Cincinnati Hardcore, Mahmoud Khalil, and a whole lot of doom with just a little slice of hope.

Songwriter, blues guitarist and singer Chris Smither joins me on the show today. I had the pleasure of meeting Chris and playing with him this past summer at a festival, and he really was a force of nature. He had an incredible groove between his guitar lines and his powerful foot, all brought together with a voice that has developed so much character over the years it just oozes out of him. Chris grew up in New Orleans, but as you'll hear, doesn't totally identify musically with his hometown. He's spent most of his career based out of the Massachusetts area, and developed his style and sound in the folk clubs of Boston and Cambridge. His songwriting style owes as much to others from that era and scene as it does to blues songwriters like Lightnin' Hopkins, Mississippi John Hurt and Skip James. He manages to pull something off which I think is difficult and very unique - he's developed a style of songwriting that seems to be right out of that era of the classic folk/blues tradition, but without being even the slightest bit derivative of those artists that came before him. He wrote the songs “Love Me Like A Man” and “I Feel The Same” that became staples in Bonnie Raitt's career and repertoire, not to mention Diana Krall also cutting “Love Me Like A Man”. His recording career began in 1971 with the album “I'm a Stranger, Too!” at which time he was label-mates with Townes Van Zandt. He's been a prolific artist ever sonce then, with a few personal low times where he shied away from making new records. But since the 90's he's been extremely consistent with a new record every year or two. His latest is called “All About The Bones” and is one of his best. Chris is one of those rare artists that just seems to keep getting better, even into his 80's. I had a great conversation with him from his home on a rare break from the road, and we had a chance to dig into all of his history and record-making process. You can keep up with Chris and all his latest news and extensive touring over at smither.com - please enjoy my conversation with Chris Smither! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. He also takes us on a journey through the joys and struggles of love and relationships with the songs “Flowers In Your Hair” by The Lumineers and “For the Sake of the Song” by Townes Van Zandt. Send us a textListen as we explore the troubled life and eloquent music of one Texas's original singer/songwriters Townes Van Zandt. Though he came from a wealthy, prestigious family Townes lived an almost bohemian lifestyle, dedicated to his music and his decadent vices. His dark, almost brutal lyrics have been a touchstone for generations of artists and fans. Hear the backstory of this influential icon and Texas music legend.
Eli Waltz stays true to his artistic vision......and this drives a captivating conversation with this standout figure in the contemporary Americana scene. Eli's had an extraordinary journey as a folk musician, shaped by a myriad of cultural influences. He shares his transformative experiences as a working musician in China—where he didn't just perform in bars and busk on the streets, but also absorbed a rich tapestry of musical traditions that would shape his distinctive sound. Discover how he defines the essence of Americana music, championing raw, unfiltered performances that resonate deeply with both artists and audiences.Eli's philosophy on music production is refreshing: he champions authenticity, preferring the spontaneity of live takes to the polish of studio recordings. With nods to legends like Bob Dylan, he passionately discusses the beauty of imperfections in folk music. Expect to hear engaging anecdotes that highlight the challenges and triumphs he's encountered along his musical path, all while exploring the emotional depth woven into his songwriting. We also touche on Eli's musical inspirations, from the profound impact of Townes Van Zandt to the philosophical echoes of the Beat poets. One particularly intriguing moment revolves around his song “Tibetan Bones,” which draws from a transformative travel experience in Tibet, revealing how personal journeys fuel powerful artistic expression.Plus, don't miss the surprise twist: an unexpected endorsement from Paul McCartney that highlights the serendipitous nature of artistic recognition and connection. Our newest member of the 'Three Timer Club,' renowned music journalist / author / photographer Michael Goldberg, joins us this week to discuss some of the most iconic images of the classic alternative era. What are some of the photos, logos, and icons that come to YOUR mind? The first-ever collection of Addicted To Noise founder and former Rolling Stone senior writer Michael Goldberg's photographs, Jukebox: Photographs 1967-2023 (Hozac Books), features an impressive array of underground figures and outcast luminaries captured in their natural habitat, most seen here for the first time anywhere. Super-special-secret friend Matt Heller (a.k.a. DJ Snakes) joins Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon for an in-depth discussion about what he's been listening to. In true DJ form, Snakes brings four rare/abstract vinyl singles to Electric Kitsch for a conversation about the DIY punk scene of his adolescence, the intersection of skateboarding and hip-hop, dusty independent soul holy grail 45s, proto-drumless rap from Wu's G.O.A.T. (arguably), and an unlikely emcee whose appeal is seemingly without boundaries. As always, an eclectic custom mixtape is curated and included on the back end. Lickers gonna lick. Join the fun! Texas troubadour Hayes Carll was born in Houston and raised in the Woodlands, a famous planned community that was much smaller back then, surrounded by thousands of acres of pine trees. He grew up listening to Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson, and later, Jerry Jeff Walker and Townes Van Zandt, all of whom seemed like mythical figures to a kid from the suburbs. His family wasn't particularly religious, but it was the music he heard at a Unitarian Church that ultimately inspired him to pick up a guitar. Now he and singer/songwriter Allison Moorer, his wife and sometimes-collaborator, are living in Nashville, and Hayes has developed something of a mythical career of his own. Sid talks to Hayes about his formative years in Conway, Arkansas, the new album he's planning to release next year, and his recent collaborations with the Austin-based Band of Heathens. Targaryen v. Baratheon, Ali v. Fraser, Dylan v. van Zandt…all cerebral incumbents facing off against challengers driven by pure heart. Bob Dylan was the greatest, to be sure, but van Zandt brought something he could never quite touch. I'm joined by lurker anon Elmore Collins to discuss his fascinating piece in Man's World, “On Townes Van Zandt and Bob Dylan: a Quiet Poet and a Dishonest Activist.” Given Dylan's vital role in the Toxic Boomerality that has come to dominate the universe, it's no surprise that he draws criticism. But his dominance is also undeniable, even for Collins. PS. The Carousel is in part named for van Zandt's Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel, particularly this verse: Get full access to The Carousel at www.carousel.blog/subscribe

This week on Roots Music Rambler, hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) are joined by emerging Americana singer-songwriter Leon Majcen (pronounced MITE-zen). The Florida-based songwriter brings a mix of John Prine and Townes Van Zandt lyrics with a Jimmy Buffet, Gulf Coast vibe that is sure to appeal to a lot of music fans. Majcen came to our attention opening for Sundy Best in Louisville in February. Falls then saw him at the Monarch Music Space in Louisville in May. His self-titled new album launched in late May and is well worth the listen, if not purchase. Majcen has an interesting backstory, too. He is the son of Bosnian immigrants who fled that country during its war in the mid 1990s. Frank and Falls also pay tribute to their music teachers in their childhoods, and as usual, offer up their weekly recommendations for new music to listen to in their Pickin' the Grinnin' segment. We're back, after a very brief hiatus, to discuss Steve's 2009 tribute to Townes Van Zandt. RIP Townes. RIP Eddie Sutton. Please lay off the string scratches this time, Tom Morello.

Scott Ballew is an Austin, Texas-based filmmaker and musician. For years, he's directed unforgettable videos and documentaries for Yeti and others. In 2020, he decided to take up songwriting and recorded his first album just a year later. This week, Ballew releases his third album, Rio Bravo. It's an exceptional work that somehow combines Ballew's affinity for Townes Van Zandt and other Austin legends with his love for reverb-drenched Ennio Morricone soundtracks. We love it. During our chat, Scott tells us about his unlikely journey from football star to director to songwriter and about how filmmaking has shaped his music output. We also talk about the making of Rio Bravo, Scott's growing guitar collection, the time he spent with Townes Van Zandt's Gibson, and how – thanks to Pearl Jam – he ended up playing football for the University of Washington. The first time I heard this tune was on Ricky Jay's collection of songs about cards and card players. Subsequently, I heard Steve Earle's story about how, when he was playing some dive for 4 or 5 people, Townes Van Zandt stumbles in and starts heckling him. It's Outlaw Country lore: Townes demands Earle play Wabash Cannonball- repeatedly. Finally, Steve demurs, claiming not to know the song, but lays this - Towne's own lyrically impossible gauntlet, line perfect, on his drunken hero, and thus begins a legendary friendship. The words fly by so fast here that it's hard to follow the narrative, which upon some study, reveals a poignant tale of a royal pair of Anthropomorphic, married playing cards doing battle through the avatars of Mud and Gold - a couple of hapless gambling addicts. The overall message being that winning and losing are matters of destiny, dictated by the fates, and beyond our control, so you might as well keep raising the stakes. Townes, an acknowledged tortured genius whose untimely death at age 52, left behind a sumptuous body of work, kept raising his stakes, living his addict's life as though his demise was pre-ordained. Even with this song, which he claimed was not written by himself, but by a “giant pencil in the sky”. Is it odd that Mr Mudd and Mr Gold would qualify as a “sunny” song? Not to me. Maybe that's because I loved Ricky Jay's winking panache, and he introduced it to me. Plus, Townes's break-neck torrent of lyrical showmanship is a thrill ride, and I smile as my brain endeavors to keep up with the writer's masterstrokes. Also, a good, ripping yarn will always bring a smile.

In this episode we welcome esteemed writer and editor Alan Light and ask him about the years he spent at Rolling Stone, Vibe and Spin — plus his close encounters with Prince, Taylor Swift and Townes Van Zandt. Vibe is the particular focus of interest for Alan's hosts, hence we hear about the magazine's inception, its co-founder Quincy Jones, our guest's long interview(s) with The Artist No Longer Known As Prince... and the problem with being a white editor of an essentially Black publication. Not to mention being at the helm when the East vs. West Coast rap wars kicked off and led to the killings of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G.. Alan's 1999 move to alternative-rock bastion Spin prompts questions about managing music magazines and nurturing their writers. He talks proudly of Spin's coverage of the infamous Woodstock '99 festival. Our guest's return to full-time writing meant that he went on to interview many of music's biggest stars — none bigger than Taylor Swift, about whom he speaks with the greatest respect. The singer's 2014 switch from country to pop with the 1989 album triggers a fascinating conversation about the Swift phenomenon. What would have been the "late great" Townes Van Zandt's 80th birthday provides the perfect excuse to hear clips from John Tobler's 1987 audio interview with the tragically self-destructive Texan. Alan recalls a couple of "long evenings" with the singer-songwriter who died in 1997 — and tells Townes' funniest joke in the process. After Mark quotes from recently-added library articles about Loverboy and Warren Zevon, Jasper wraps matters up with his thoughts on Papa Roach and Françoise Hardy. Many thanks to special guest Alan Light. Find all his books, including Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain and The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley and the Unlikely Ascent of Hallelujah, at all good bookshops. To listen to his podcast, visit sounduppod.com. Pieces discussed: Vibe: the Hip Hop Years, R.I.P. Vibe, The Demise of Vibe and the Future of Criticism, Prince breaks the silence, Taylor Swift on writing her own rules, Taylor Swift at CMA Fest, Townes Van Zandt audio, Loverboy, Warren Zevon, Papa Roach and Françoise Hardy.

There is no shortage of sad music in the world. Just reference most love songs, a substantial chunk of country music, and the entire genre known as “the blues”. But there's sad and then there's DEPRESSING and that's the bit we seek to dive into with this episode. We talked to three top music critics: Steven Hyden of Uproxx, Craig Jenkins of Vulture, and Ann Powers of NPR and asked them to provide their picks for those songs that are relentlessly depressing but yet have the surprising power to make the listener feel better or at least more understood. Our playlist of dark hits features many feel-terrible classic, a depression-makes-me-feel-nothing jam, and one song so relentlessly happy that it might make you feel genuinely upset.
