Banks of the Sweet Primroses - A False Young Man

A chance meeting in a meadow, a false young man and a philosophical ending… it's that folk favourite the Banks of the Sweet Primroses, beloved of collectors and Broadside publishers alike. In fact it's part of the history of so many folk song collectors that we've taken the opportunity to follow one of them on their collecting expedition. But what really happened in that meadow and why did the young man get such a dressing down? We've got all the theories and a few of our own, and even a potential Civil War origin for the song itself. And while we're out walking in the morning fields there's a perfect opportunity for some gratuitous medieval weirdness.Oh yes, we're back!MusicThe Banks of the Sweet Primroses (instrumental) was collected from W. Buckland of Buckinghamshire in 1943 by Francis Collinson and is found in the New Penguin Book of English Folk Song. The Banks of the Sweet Primeroses (sung, first verse only) was collected and arranged by Cecil Sharp. It appears in Cyril Winn, A Selection of Some Less Known Folk-Songs vol.2 pp.64-65Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy was sung for me by Phil Beer at Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2022.Maids Looke Well About You can be found here. Odette Michell is an English Folk Singer/Songwriter with a fine voice that hints at Sandy or Joni, which is no bad thing! Her finely tuned songwriting is sometimes so convincing that you'll believe it's a traditional song. Odette found her feet as a performer in and around Cambridge, she even made a couple of appearances on the Club Stage at the prestigious folk festival. Things really began to take off with her first EP By Way of Night in March 2018 which attracted many positive reviews and radio plays. She has since gone on to open for folk legends Phil Beer (Show of Hands) and Martin Carthy, and is embarking on her first national solo tour. Odette's first full length album The Wildest Rose, produced by Stu Hanna from award winning folk duo Megson, will be out in April 2019 and features musical contributions from Phil Beer and Toby Shaer. Steve Knightley is one half of the acclaimed folk duo Show of Hands. He and his musical partner Phil Beer are proud to come from Devon - once beating Sir Francis Drake in a public vote to name the greatest ever Devonians. Steve has been described as “a gravel voiced spokesman for the rural poor” and many of the songs he writes are inspired by the  working people he meets in and around his home town of Topsham. In this episode of Folk on Foot, Steve takes Matthew on a walk from Exmouth - scene of some of his earliest gigs as a teenage musician - along the Exe trail to Topsham. In Exmouth docks Steve performs “The Dive” which tells the true story of a father and son diving drama, as the real life son of the story looks on. On a farm near Topsham Steve sings “Country Life” his angry anthem about the destruction of the countryside by second home owners and agri-barons.
