Andre Michot, a driving force behind Louisiana's cultural soundscape and a founding member of the Grammy-winning Lost Bayou Ramblers, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss Michot Accordions. Widely known for pushing Cajun music forward while remaining deeply rooted in tradition, Andre's influence extends well beyond the stage. He is also the proprietor and craftsman behind Michot Accordions, where he builds, restores, and customizes traditional Cajun accordions entirely by hand—creating instruments that don't just make music, but carry culture. We sat down with Andre right before Christmas 2025, inspired in part by a recent Acadiana Profile article highlighting local craftsmen who help preserve the region's musical heritage. Andre reflected on the shrinking number of Cajun accordion builders, noting that while there are now “maybe 10 or 12 accordion builders in South Louisiana,” there were once “30 or more in the 70s and 80s.” A Family Steeped in Music Andre's musical roots run deep. He grew up surrounded by Cajun music through his father and uncles, who started playing together as Les Frères Michot, an all-brothers Cajun band, in 1986. The individual musicians have played with each other and with numerous other groups since then. Although accordion music was always present in his home, Andre didn't begin playing the instrument himself until age 24. Before that, he filled in on guitar with his family's band in the mid-to-late 1980s. “That's what I play with Lost Bayou Ramblers,” Andre shared, explaining that he learned accordion by borrowing instruments from his father, uncles, and anyone else who would lend him one. In 1998, Andre and his brother Louis formed Lost Bayou Ramblers, with Louis playing fiddle at the same time Andre took up accordion. Learning the Craft Andre's path to accordion building began through curiosity and mentorship. A pivotal moment came when his friend Ray Abshire encouraged him to learn tuning from Randy Falcon, a respected accordion builder known for a sound associated with Cajun music from the 1930s through the 1970s. “There's probably no playbook,” Andre explained. “It's mostly done by ear.” While machines help with precision, tuning ultimately depends on feel: air pressure, reed response, and how notes interact when played together. Andre described the Cajun accordion as “quite a feat of engineering,” with “a hundred little metal reeds” held in place by beeswax. Unlike guitars, which rely on resonance, the accordion produces sound through air compression, making it both mechanical and deeply physical to play. Inside a Cajun Accordion Technically known as a melodeon, the Cajun accordion features ten buttons on the melody side and two bass buttons for rhythm. Pressing a single button opens air channels to four sets of reeds across different octaves, producing layered sound from one note. The bellows, expanding and contracting, drive both airflow and rhythm. “It's very physical,” Andre said. “When I started, I would get halfway through a song and be out of breath.” He later realized he had been breathing in and out with the bellows themselves. Cajun accordions are diatonic, meaning each button produces different notes depending on whether the bellows are pushed or pulled. This design creates the distinctive rhythmic pulse central to Cajun music. From Repair to Building Andre's transition from tuning and repair to full instrument building came when Randy Falcon offered to teach him how to build rather than sell him an accordion. With a background in carpentry and furniture-making, Andre found the process both challenging and deeply satisfying. After building his first accordion, word spread, especially as audiences learned of his craft through Lost Bayou Ramblers’ performances. Orders followed from family, fellow musicians, and fans. “That gives the accordion its soul,” Andre said of the delicate reed work. “That part has got to be right.” Materials, Sound, and Customization Most accordion components can be sourced locally, including wood, often cypress, sometimes supplied by customers themselves. Certain parts come from Italy, where Andre says, “80 to 90% of the accordions and accordion parts in the world” are produced, particularly reeds and bellows, which require a highly specialized manufacturing process. Andre customizes each instrument based on how a musician plays. He listens to recordings, watches hand positioning of the artist, and considers tonal preferences. Differences in reed materials, zinc versus aluminum plates, steel reeds, block shaping, and tuning style, all can dramatically affect sound. “It helps playing the accordion in addition to building them,” he said. “It's nice to be able to put those two together.” The Joy of Completion Building an accordion takes Andre an estimated 80 to 100 hours, from cutting raw wood to final tuning. As he approaches the final stages, installing reeds, buttons, and bellows, he describes entering a kind of creative frenzy. “I can't wait to hear how it sounds,” he said. “I've built over 50 accordions now, and I still feel that way.” Properly made, an accordion can last decades. Andre plays an instrument that is over 100 years old, including one built in the early 1900s that passed through the hands of Ray Abshire and family members before reaching him. Preserving Cajun Culture Andre sees his work as cultural preservation. By continuing the tuning methods and building styles passed down by mentors like Randy Falcon, he maintains a sound closely tied to a specific era of Cajun music. “You can play a Cajun accordion built and tuned here,” he explained, “and it's going to sound and feel different than one built elsewhere.” That sense of lineage—of sound shaped by place—is central to his work. Music That Never Stops Andre described music as a constant presence. “I'm constantly waking up with songs in my head,” he said, sometimes humming melodies into his I-phone voice memos late at night and sending them to Louis, his brother and fellow band mate. Lost Bayou Ramblers' sound reflects not only traditional Cajun influences but also blues, rock, and other genres the band members grew up playing. Lost Bayou Ramblers recently performed at Moncus Park's Christmas event, with upcoming shows at The Blue Moon (December 26) and The Broadside in New Orleans (December 27). The band is also beginning work on a new studio album, following several recent live recordings, including their collaboration with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. In this episode, Tales From The Green Room presents their conversations with Joe Marcinek and Jeremy Hoenig recorded before their respective performances during Jazz Fest 2025 in New Orleans – featuring two musicians swimming in the same music circles in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally - and both connected with Melvin Seals! Marcinek joins the show before his stellar appearance leading Dead Funk Summit during the Crawfish Festival at The Broadside, and is joined by soulful percussionist, drummer, vocalist, Rick King – a member of the Summit on this day. King talks about getting drawn into the Grateful Dead vibe, including with his own band, Rick King's Royal Hustle, elaborating on how magic happens on stage with Marcinek. Hoenig sits down with the hosts before holding down the beat on drums at his gig with Melvin Seals & JGB at Café Istanbul - made possible by venue host Mitch Stein, responsible for curating a stellar lineup of musicians at the venue during Jazz Fest. The Marcinek segment – recorded the very day his new album, The Groove Sessions, was released - delves into Joe's late entry into music, his love for New Orleans sounds, the evolution of his Dead Funk Summit project now taking on a life of its own, and the special energy created by different musicians joining the venture around the country - including the likes of George Porter, Jr. and the aforementioned, Melvin Seals. The Crawfish King, Shaggy Davis, even makes a cameo during the interview! Hoenig talks about his own musical journey from being inspired by his father's record collection to his current gig with the iconic Seals, playing with Camille Boudin of The Radiators, and reflects on “falling into the groove” playing beats the first time he entered the New Orleans music scene. Jeremy identifies a cadre of his favorite New Orleans drummers and how playing with Melvin Seals & JGB is the perfect fit for him. Joe Marcinek, Rick King, and Jeremy Hoenig go in depth sharing their experiences in the music scene, their love for improvisation, and the collaborative spirit they embody, providing for a heartwarming and informative episode.HIGHLIGHTSWhen you have a band that plays all the time, it's easy to kind of go through the motions…where if you've never played together or it's something new, everyone's really locked in. Are we hitting the changes? Are we going to the move? Any little change that a musician does, that's when the magic happens.-Joe Marcinek on brining in different musicians to his "Dead Funk Summit"I read something about Miles Davis saying, “ I don't talk to my musicians about music, because if I would have to talk to 'em about it, I hired the wrong people in the first place. And I always think about that.-Rick King on the possibility of creating situations where magic can happen on stage among musicians, if you talk too much about it. You can imagine how proud I am to be playing this music, which for me has all the styles that I love, and the music I gravitate towards. It's blues, it's funk, it's reggae, it's jazz, it's country. It's all these rhythms. And Jerry knew, when he had his own band, he wanted to explore all those different things. So that's why I feel it's a very good fit for me… and personally, I just, I enjoy it. It lets me have everything that I love in one band.-Jeremy Hoenig on being a member of "Melvin Seals & JGB"PHOTOSBackstage Photos at NOLA Crawfish Fest – 4.29.25 – by Appelbaum ImagesSPONSOR SHOUT OUTSSpecial Thanks to Son Vo (Jerry's Middle Finger) for his expert audio engineering skills editing the interview with Joe Marcinek and Rick King- recorded in a very noisy, outdoor backstage area at the Broadside in New Orleans during the Crawfish Festival - making this episode possible! This episode captures the essence of The Rumble's journey and their undeniable impact on New Orleans music and beyond!Catch The Rumble at High Sierra Music Festival 2025 July 3-6!Episode Photo Gallery by Chris Applebaum Images – 4/28/25 Episode Photo Gallery by Chris Applebaum Images – 4/29/25HighlightsThere's something about the groove here. It's different. I kind of always say I don't trust a drummer who hasn't spent some time in New Orleans. Yeah. I mean, it's just, it's in the air. You feel it, you're so spoiled down here, man. It's just amazing. It's unifying too!-Wally Ingram praising the New Orleans music scene Detroit's got such a rich musical tradition, and I had a chance to come up under a lot of the greats and people like Ralph Armstrong, who played with Mahavishnu Orchestra and got a chance to play with Allan Barnes, sax player from Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds. I had great teachers like Rodney Whitaker, the great upright bass player in Detroit. So I got a strong foundation in blues bebop, R&B, and then played in church and also in Michigan there was a strong jam band community, so I was kind of always in and out of that.-Ari Teitel on learning from the greats in his home state of MichiganIt opens you up. You stay open for the moments, for those times when you might go off script. But that's where the magic is. That's the sauce. Those are the moments I freaking live for. You're on the edge, you don't know what's gonna happen, and then you come up. Especially if I were playing with like Wally or Andrew, I'm confident in that unknown. It will present a lot of opportunities for some great moments, and in those moments you discover some new musical ground and then everybody shares a smile.-Ari Teitel on how his jazz training opens him up to magical musical momentsWhen I was 19, I met Clyde Stubblefield. in Madison, Wisconsin. A friend of mine brought him to see me play, and I met him and I asked him if he teaches lessons. He goes, no, no man, just play. Just come down every Monday night. I'm at this club. Just come down. So I would go down there and watch him play. Just like what you guys were talking about. And he would say, oh yeah, you're that guy. A drummer, okay, you're up next set. And you'd have to just sit in with his band, which is a full R&B band with horns and they'd be like, oh shit. Clyde's got another drummer. Shit. So you'd have to sit in with his band and hold your own. He was very open to that. And we became great friends his whole life and we played together a lot.-Wally Ingram on learning from legendary James Brown drummer, Clyde StubblefieldI was at the show seeing Robert Randolph when I was 11 years old. My dad got everybody in the section to point at me…this kid, this kid! So he calls me up. I played for two minutes and then his guitar tech came to usher me off. Like, okay, that was it. Good job buddy. And then Rob Randolph waved him off, and said, no, no, no, he's staying up. So I played a whole 20 minutes with him. He lifted me up. Yeah. Put me on top of a chair. I didn't know it was happening, my legs were flailing!-Ari Teitel reflecting on his big moment on stage with Robert Randolph at age 11 I didn't really know the function of a keyboard in a band fully until I heard about Ray Charles and heard what he did for the first time. I had never played a Rhodes piano. It felt insane the first time I played one. It was Ray Charles really that opened my mind. And then it was like Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. And that was cool with my parents 'cause they were classically proficient. But then it started to deepen. Then you, obviously, learn about Miles Davis

John Bartram was a Quaker farmer near Philadelphia in the mid 18th century. So how did he become North America's first great botanist? And how did he and his son William find themselves in the wilds of southeastern Georgia, fighting off rain, hunger and mosquitos, in order to find the rare and beautiful Franklin Tree (Franklinia alatamaha)? In the course of childhood, we have innumerable experiences. We spend a portion of our adult lives trying to recover from the ones that scar us. But there are also positive experiences. Joyful times and meaningful relationships stay with us. They come to define happiness. For Brittney Hawkins Dobard, one of her happy-place emotional touchstones was with her grandmother in her kitchen, baking cookies. As a kid, Brittney called her grandmother, “MoMo Gerald.” As an adult, Brittney was in car sales. When you're a car salesperson, your customer spends a bunch of time waiting around. To make the wait less painful, Brittney started bringing her customers homemade cookies. Like MoMo Gerald used to bake. In 2019, Brittney realized her cookies were so popular - and she enjoyed making them so much - that she quit selling cars and started up NOLA Cookie Co. Today NOLA Cookie Co cranks out up to 800 cookies a week. They sell them from their website, ship them across the country, and supply the Virgin Hotel with 300 cookies a month. Margie Tillman Ayres called her grandmother, “Granny.” But she started out following her in grandfather's footsteps, as a jewelry designer. It was only when Margie was struggling and out of necessity took a job in the art department at Jazz Fest that she discovered how much she enjoyed recreating her childhood days with Granny, painting, making sculptures and puppets. In 2014 Margie made it official – she become an artist, muralist and illustrator, starting up her own company, Margie and The Moon. You'll see Margie's work all over New Orleans – from murals at places like the restaurant Mr. Mao and music venue The Broadside – to her scenic work in movies and TV shows that are shot here. You've probably also seen her commercial work as an illustrator and her graphic designs for companies as diverse as Pyrex and Trader Joe's. Margie's style is immediately recognizable. It's a unique whimsicality executed with realist perfection. Margie is currently committing this style to canvases as she moves away from illustration and toward selling her pieces as fine art. When you're a parent or grandparent, you know that your kids or grandkids are constantly observing you. And absorbing everything. At least until they're teenagers, when that totally flips. But when they're young kids you never know what seemingly inconsequential thing you say or do is going to stick with them and resonate through their lives. And maybe even form the basis of an entire career. Brittney and Margie's grandmothers, MoMo Gerald and Granny, might be surprised at the influence they've had on their grandaughter's lives and careers, but they'd certainly be proud. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. When Shakespeare mentions ballads in his plays, he uses adjectives like odious and woeful, mentioning both the ballad makers in Coriolanus, and the people who sell them, known as the ballad mongers, in Henry IV Part 1. Shakespeare's has over 20 references to ballads throughout his works, all of which tell us that these songs were written in ink, published by printers, and performed in songs that not only rhymed, but that could be just as merry as it was painful, particularly if the ballad was sung out of tune, as Cleopatra complains in Antony and Cleopatra. Here today to share with us some of the exact ballads that were popular for Shakespeare's lifetime, as well as the history of how they were created, and performed, is our guests, and masterminds behind the 100 Ballads Project that seeks to recreate and preserve ballads from the 17th century, Angela McShane, Chris Marsh, and Andy Watts.
