Every solar array, battery system, and EV charger installed over the past decade will eventually need to be decommissioned. Yet there's no unifying system to handle that flow of materials—no operating system for the reverse supply chain that the circular economy depends on. While Americans recycle 97% of vehicles, we recycle less than 20% of electronics, leaving valuable critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and gold to languish in warehouses or end up in landfills. The electronics embedded in our built environment represent the richest mining scene on Earth, yet we treat these refined materials as waste rather than the valuable resources they are. Meet Alexander Olesen, co-founder and CEO of Buckstop, an urban mining company launched in early 2025 to build what he calls "the intelligence layer for the circular economy." He previously founded Babylon Micro Farms, which develops distributed vertical farming systems, and he returns to Sustainability In Your Ear to share his new mission: creating a sustainable end-of-use solution for every electronic device on Earth.Buckstop took just three months to deploy its "algorithmic assay," a method of deconstructing finished goods into their raw materials and critical minerals at scale, something that wasn't possible to do efficiently before the advent of AI. The result: asset owners can now see the granular value of their deployed electronics in unprecedented detail. The scrap value of electronics typically yields only 1-5% recovery, but resale value can reach 20-30%. For Fortune 500 companies with billions in fixed assets, that circularity delta represents enormous value currently being destroyed.Olesen's approach draws directly from his decade-long experience as an OEM manufacturing vertical farming equipment with 1,200 unique components. "Why is there no comprehensive end-of-life solution for technology assets?" he asked. Every hardware entrepreneur he knew in renewables, robotics, and distributed systems faced the same problem. Buckstop's model draws inspiration from an unlikely source: Kelley Blue Book. "Kelley Blue Book was the data stream that formalized the aftermarket for vehicles," Olesen notes. Before that standardization, people would leave cars rusting by the roadside. Today, the automotive industry is the most circular industry on the planet. Olesen believes the same transformation is possible for the electronics industry. The platform currently focuses on renewable energy infrastructure—solar panels, batteries, inverters—but Buckstop's long-term vision extends to one day tracking all electronic assets. As Olesen puts it: "If you can't measure it, you can't improve it." That measurement is where circularity begins. You can learn more about Buckstop and access the beta assessment tool at buckstop.com.Subscribe to Sustainability In Your Ear on iTunesFollow Sustainability In Your Ear on Spreaker, iHeartRadio, or YouTube

Dig into the archives for a conversation about John Lennon's five-year legal battle against the U.S. government's attempt to deport him. This episode explores the politically charged atmosphere of the early 1970s, where the Nixon administration, wary of Lennon's anti-war stance and influence over a new generation of voters, sought to silence him.We revisit a powerful interview with the late Leon Wildes, the brilliant immigration attorney who represented John and Yoko, along with his son Michael Wildes. They reveal the strategies, pressures, and ultimate triumphs of a historic legal saga that tested the foundations of American justice and established a lasting legal precedent. Guest Leon Wildes was the renowned immigration attorney who successfully represented John Lennon and Yoko Ono against the U.S. government's deportation efforts. An adjunct professor of law and a leading expert in the field, he authored the book John Lennon vs. The U.S.A., detailing the landmark case. Donald Trump continues to terrorize urban populations with militarized ICE raids while trying every loophole he can find to justify using the actual military in U.S. cities.Illinois Governor JB Pritzker talks with Rachel Maddow about his threat to leave the National Governors Association of the group won't speak out against Donald Trump's use of the National Guard against U.S. cities. Pritzker explains how he sees the militarization of ICE and Border Patrol agents as a normalizing precursor to establishing a military presence in cities in time to interfere with the 2026 election. And as individuals find ways to assert peaceful resistance against the Trump regime, major corporations, like Apple, are giving up without a fight. The competition is intensifying among global hedge funds giants to attract top traders and analysts. There's particularly high demand for talent at "pod shops", which allow portfolio managers to run their own strategies and manage allocated capital. High-profile managers with strong track records can command pay packages in the tens of millions of dollars. "The type of manager we're trying to hire, they are hiring us. It's not [us] hiring them", says Jay Luo, President of Dymon Asia Capital, a regionally focused alternative manager with about $5 billion in assets. He likens managing a pod shop to running a high-performance sports team and shares his insights on competing against global hedge funds like Millennium and Point72 -- with hiring the right person sometimes years in the making. Hulu's chilling new documentary, Death in Apartment 603, takes viewers deep into the still-unresolved and deeply unsettling case of Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old teacher found dead under suspicious circumstances in her Philadelphia apartment. Despite 20 stab wounds and bizarre inconsistencies at the scene, her death was shockingly ruled a suicide—leaving her parents, Joshua and Sandee Greenberg, in a relentless fight for answers that has spanned over a decade. In this special episode of Surviving the Survivor (STS), host Joel Waldman interviews director Nancy Schwartzman, who unpacks the new revelations that cast serious doubt on the official narrative. Simone Kearney is a Dublin-born, Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist and writer. She is interested in tracking the daily embodied experience of emotional and intellectual life, which she traces through repetition and variation, metaphor and materiality. Her practice is an inquiry — as much visual as it is psychological — into how experience is a cobbled, fragile thing, shapeshifting, subject to time, configured and reconfigured through our bodies. In recent projects, she has been working with hand-carved stone sculpture, watercolor, and text, to reflect states of self and collective consciousness, where the work starts to gather like archaeological fragments of the psyche. Kearney currently has a solo show of sculptures and works on paper entitled DIGS at Guest Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, on view from September 20th – November 8th. She also will have sculptures in a group exhibition at Koki Arts in Tokyo, Japan, this October. Some previous solo exhibitions include Putty's Coronation, Brooklyn, NY; Undercurrent Gallery, Brooklyn New York; Artshack Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; and Annex Gallery, Lighthouse Works, Fisher's Island, NY. She is a NYFA grant recipient and is the author of Dim, Dahlia, Violet, Stone, (ITI Press, 2024), DAYS, (Belladonna Press, 2021), and My Ida (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2017). Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have seen some dumb litigators in their day, but the person representing former South Carolina Rep. RJ May is by far the biggest idiot. RJ May — who is representing himself in court after being charged with 10 federal counts of distributing child sexual abuse material this past June — filed his very first motion last week after firing his public defense team, who wouldn't file the motion for him … likely because it's a really bad idea. The 32-page handwritten filing accuses the government of misconduct but not for any reason you could guess at. Mandy and Liz talk about RJ May's attempt at being clever and how they already foresee it blowing up in his face. Also on the show, after 33-year-old (33:50) Scott Spivey was shot and killed on Sept. 9, 2023, by North Myrtle Beach businessman Weldon Boyd and his friend Bradley Williams, Horry County Police Department failed to separate both shooters. Hours later, when questioned by investigators and two prosecutors, Bradley Williams appeared nervous and careful about the details he gave. At that point, though, according to the case file, police had already intervened in the investigation to make sure Weldon and Bradley wouldn't be charged. So why interview them at all? Mandy and Liz share the recording of Bradley's interview with police and the shocking moments that show just how little effort was put into investigating Scott's case. So much to cover, so let's dive in!

The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Greg and Ed interview Chatwan Mongkol about his relatively new website called ‘Soiciety.' Chatwan begins by explaining that he was born and raised in Thailand but then went to the U.S. for a year of high school and stayed on for university. He majored in journalism and (shock!) subsequently worked for several news outlets in the Northeast. During his time there he saw a type of news that Thailand lacks: truly LOCAL news that focuses on important practical matters that primarily affect people living in a particular city or region. Hence, ‘Soiciety' was born! The website is in English, but is primarily based on Thai sources of information. Chatwan has chosen to focus on matters directly relevant to people living in Bangkok - not international news, not national Thai news, not abstract political stuff. Does it affect the daily life of people living in Bangkok? If no, it's out, if yes, it's in. Further, currently his audience is made up of foreign English speakers, but he's hoping to expand into international Thais, and in the future could even provide Thai language content if the market is there. Greg and Ed moderately bash the current quality of English language news sites in Thailand, and heartily support the idea of focusing on stuff of immediate practical value. Is a skytrain station being planned for my neighborhood? I want to know that. Are alcohol sales hours being changed in the city? I'd like the answer. Is the city doing anything about the air pollution? Please tell me. You get the idea, and if you live in Bangkok, you could probably use some ‘Soiciety' in your life too. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. We also sometimes post on Facebook, you can contact us on LINE and of course, head to our website (www.bangkokpodcast.com) to find out probably more info than you need to know.

A thrilling, cinematic saga of a Southern belle whose espionage for Abraham Lincoln and the Union helped win the Civil War.Wealthy Southern belle Elizabeth Van Lew had it all. Money, charm, wit—the biggest mansion in Richmond. So why risk everything to become the Civil War's most productive Union spy?The answer was simple: freedom. In this gripping history of a secret espionage genius, Gerri Willis reveals how Elizabeth built a flourishing spy network in the heart of the Confederate Capitol. Flouting society's expectations for women, Elizabeth infiltrated prisons, defied public opinion, and recruited an underground movement of freed slaves, secret Unionists, and brave captives.Putting her straitlaced Victorian past behind her, Elizabeth encountered vivid characters—assassins, socialites, escape artists, and cross-dressing spies. From grave robbery to a bold voyage across enemy lines, her escapades grew more and more daring. It paid off. Her agents were so well-placed that she had spies gathering information in both the Confederate War Department and the Richmond White House, and couriers providing General Ulysses S. Grant with crucial, daily intelligence for the war's final assault.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Today's Headlines: President Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a vein condition that can cause leg swelling and serious complications—though his doctor insists he's in “excellent” health. Meanwhile, Senate Democrat Ron Wyden revealed that the Trump DOJ has suppressed evidence of over $1.5 billion in Jeffrey Epstein-linked transactions flagged by major banks, some involving Russian accounts and high-profile payments, yet Trump refuses to appoint a special counsel or release more documents.
