You've heard him on WTMD. And you can hear him in an abbreviated set with WTMD at their Live Lunch series on June 13th at Rams Head On Stage--tickets are free, but you need to RSVP at WTMD . And yet another chance to see a full show at the Creative Alliance on August 17th. But before that, check out our conversation with Raul Midón. Raul's new album, "Lost and Found," released in April 2024, showcases his talent for blending folk and roots with jazz, soul, and pop. As a seasoned singer and guitarist, Raul has received multiple Grammy nominations and was honored with the distinguished alumni award from the University of Miami, where he studied before becoming a highly sought-after session singer. His impressive collaborations include work with Lizz Wright, Larry Klein, Arif Mardin, Pat Metheny, Richard Bona, Bill Withers, Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, and Alex Cuba. IMPORTANT NOTE: During our conversation, I mistakenly thought (and said) his full concert at the Creative Alliance was on June 17th, it is actually on AUGUST 17th! -JF Have a listen! Grammy-winning Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba didn't have the tradition of Christmas while growing up back home in Cuba, but it's nonetheless a holiday close to his heart since he and his wife decided to get married on the day back in 1995.
Sonnet Simmons and Chris Assaad have a heart-filled discussion about the unfathomable depths of creative potential in music and how to dive right in with clarity and purpose. Chris Assaad is a multi-talented artist, singer-songwriter, wordsmith and speaker. His songs are pure alchemy that open the heart and inspire, connecting us to our wholeness and joy. His music soothes and seduces with exquisite layers of acoustic and electric acoustic guitars falling over R&B, reggae and soul-infused grooves serenaded by Chris's richly textured emotive vocals. Chris is an up-and-coming artist within the conscious music community and wellness & transformation movement opening up for artists such as Trevor Hall, Ayla Nereo, Michael Franti and Nick Mulvey. He has also collaborated live and in the studio with Mose and has been a featured guest on Lee Harris' Impact The World podcast and Portal Presents live series. He has been growing an international grassroots community, sharing his eclectic blend of soulful roots music, heart-opening songs and stories with audiences in Canada, Australia, the US & Europe playing concert and festival dates from Wanderlust Whistler to The Sound Dome in Sydney to the Great Hall in Toronto. Chris recently released his fourth studio album entitled GOLDEN in partnership with White Swan Records & Black Swan Sounds. His most raw and vulnerable album to date was recorded in Victoria, BC in collaboration with producer Joby Baker (Deva Premal & Miten, Alex Cuba & the Wailin' Jennys) who also produced Assaad's LION LP. Chris' artist journey began with a leap several years ago to follow his heart and passion for music. Just as he began exploring his love of singing and songwriting he was suddenly faced with a rapidly progressing hereditary hearing loss condition. Nearly two years and several surgeries later, Chris's hearing was restored and he was given a second chance, further cementing his path of a life dedicated to his artistry. He has become an inspirational voice for others to follow their creative and spiritual paths towards living a life they love. Chris has a deep passion and unique gift for supporting others in liberating their voice, amplifying their authentic self-expression and tapping into their infinite creative potential. As a facilitator and guide, Chris holds a powerful sacred space for healing and transformation, drawing upon years of experience, deep empathic attunement and intuitive guidance. He has developed his own Voice Alchemy method to help clients access the healing power of their voice, weaving practical tools, ancient wisdom and multiple healing modalities to bring forth the full potency of their unique soul song and expression. Chris is also the creator of Follow Your Art, a lovingly-crafted online program and detailed map to support the creative journey.

It's been an amazing Season 4 here at Hidden Track. We've had visits with an astounding array of inspired artists, ranging from local heroes to global greats; from a reigning Polaris Prize winner to a newly minted Grammy Award winner; from hip-hop to hardcore punk to homespun folk. It's been such a wild 2023! So wild, in fact, that we felt the need to do a special episode to wrap up the season. Given the daunting task of summarizing such an incredible season, Grant decided to call in a little help! For this year-end episode, Grant Stovel is joined by Hidden Track producer Scott Zielsdorf to help share some great stories and songs from amongst this season's 21 episodes. In particular, this collection of magical moments zeroes in on the idea of connecting to something larger through music -- whether that's connecting with family and friends, with community, with humanity at large, connecting with your own inner sense of humanity, even connecting with your true artistic self. That yearning to connect is often the catalyst that compels musicians to create, to express, to be part of something. Music can be a vector for connection in amazing ways -- as we hear in this episode! With memorable stories and songs from the likes of William Prince, Tanika Charles, Arlo Maverick, Wendy McNeill, Dan Mangan, F*cked Up, Young Fathers, Aysanabee, Andy Shauf, Kid Koala & Leilani, Alex Cuba, and July Talk. Thank you for being with us in 2023! And we thank all of our guests for being so generous with their time and their hearts. All the best for 2024, and we can't wait to share Hidden Track Season 5 with you! Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Music: Doug Hoyer | Graphics: Shaun Friesen The Hidden Track Podcast is made possible by the generous contributions of our donors. Thank you for your support!

These are all artists touring the US right now, so look them up if you want to watch them live! 1) Los Amigos Invisibles - a Venezuelan funk, disco, pop and jazz group who has released 11 albums and won a Latin Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2009 and Best Alternative Song in 2019. 2) Os Mutantes - a Brazilian psychedelic rock band that gained international recognition in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 2019, the band announced a tour of the United States to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their iconic album "Mutantes," which was released in 1969. 3) Alex Cuba - an amazing lyricist who plays a mix of Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, and pop, underpinned by sanguine melodies, soul-tinged hooks, and a romantic story or two. He is without a doubt the only winner of a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album ever to make their home in the northwestern B.C. town of Smithers, population 5,316. Alex Cuba originally hails from Artemisa, Cuba; but he's called Smithers, BC home for two decades now. He first visited CKUA 20 years ago, back when he was known as Alexis Puentes, one half of the Juno Award-nominated Puntes Brothers, along with his twin brother Adonis. In the years since then, he's been digging deep into his astounding array of musical abilities and interests, challenging himself creatively at every turn and crafting a solo discography that's touched the hearts of music lovers across Canada, the entire Latin diaspora and across the globe. Over his remarkable career arc, Alex's music has won him two Junos, four Latin Grammys, and in 2022, his album Mendó garnered him a Grammy Award, the most revered accolade in the whole music world. In this episode, Alex returns to CKUA for a spirited in-studio visit to reflect on his rather mind-boggling musical journey, and to share fascinating stories and insights in his characteristically charismatic style. He tells us about how his whole life changed the moment he met the Canadian woman who would become his lifelong partner; what drives him to create his unique, highly personalized form of musical expression; why artificial intelligence will never be able to replicate the raw human beauty that's distilled in music; and what it's like to win a Grammy Award for an album that that he created almost entirely by himself -- writing, singing, producing, and playing all the instruments himself, at home in his small northwestern BC town.

From The Cat Came Back, Polly Wolly Doodle, We're Gonna Shine, to You Can Do It (If You Try), once you hear Fred's songs, you'll be singing along all day. Fred Penner has been the soundtrack to so many kids' lives and now those kids (myself included) are raising their kids on his music! His positivity and upbeat music is fun to listen to for those young and old. His songs are about encouragement, love, kindness, feelings and being positive. It was my sincere honour to interview Fred Penner for this episode. In this episode, we talk about his 13th album, Hear the Music, current tour, his views on the state of parenting and families today, raising his own kids, how he creates his music and the messages in his songs. It's the most wonderful conversation that I know you will enjoy as much as I did. It was the perfect way to celebrate my 150th episode of Parenting our Future! Fred's tour dates include May 28th and 29th at the Arts Theatre in Surrey with Charlotte Diamond and Rick Scott. May 30th to June 5th at the Vancouver Children's Festival on Granville Island, Vancouver. We talked about a previous episode of Parenting our Future, with Dr. Shimi Kang, “The Tech Solution” the link is below https://www.parentingforconnection.com/parentingourfuture/episode/cef039c6/the-tech-solution-with-dr-shimi-kang-or-pof62 For , you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Fred Penner Fred Penner could be forgiven for wanting to hang up his guitar and just relax. As Canada's foremost family entertainer, the genial singer/songwriter really has nothing left to prove. Witness his 12 previous albums with their 10 JUNO Award nominations and three wins. See also Fred's 12 seasons (and nearly 950 episodes!) hosting the hit CBC TV show, Fred Penner's Place. There are also his performances alongside luminaries including (but not limited to) Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Raffi, Sharon Lois & Bram and Buffy Sainte-Marie; his status as the first kid's performer to headline the Los Angeles Amphitheater; his honourary doctorates and his prestigious Member of the Order of Canada and Member of the Order of Manitoba. Oh, and let's not forget his winning turn as emcee of the cutting-edge 2015 Polaris Music Prize or his altruistic, globe-trotting work as an Ambassador for World Vision. All fabulous and notable.
Alex Cuba grew up 50 minutes west of Havana immersed in the music of his town Artemisa. His father, the musician Valentin Puentes, is a household name in the country and prioritized Cuban music in the house growing up. When Alex was six years old, Valentin told his son not to sing, leading Alex to concentrate on his bass guitar playing. As a teenager, Alex rebelled and started soaking in the sounds of American music; blues, jazz, rock and funk. This has lead him to develop a unique style of Latin music that crosses cultures and appeals to people who don't even speak his language. He sings English, but is most comfortable singing in Spanish. We talk about how even though a lot of his fans are English speakers, they often have an emotional reaction to his music even though they don't know what he's saying. He expands on how emotions transfer via music no matter what language.in 1995, Alex was allowed to tour in Canada with his dad's band and met someone who would forever change his life, his future wife Sarah Goodacre. They eventually ended up married with children and living in Cuba. After awhile, they moved closer to her family in Smithers, B.C., where they have single handedly created a Latin music industry in the small Canadian mountain town. Despite not being able to work with major record labels due to the Cuban Embargo with America, Alex has thrived as an independent artist with 4 Latin Grammys, 3 American Grammy nominations, 2 Junos and numerous other accolades. We talk about what changes he experienced in himself while recording his latest album 'Mendó' during the pandemic. Alex, like many musicians, was forced to change plans and ended up working on the album at his house, while collaborating with other guest musicians remotely. We also talk about how he wanted the cover to reflect his African heritage. Brianna McCarthy, an artist from Trinidad and Tobago, illustrated the cover and Alex talks in depth about its meaning and importance. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
