Z kolei na gruncie rosyjskiego prawosławia przełomu XIX i XX w., w stosunkowo wąskich kręgach elit intelektualnych Moskwy i Petersburga, grono myślicieli religijnych (z reguły niebędących duchownymi) prowadziło ożywioną debatę nad duchowym dziedzictwem swego kraju. Wypracowano szereg oryginalnych propozycji filozoficzno-teologicznych poza obszarem oficjalnej teologii cerkiewnej. Były to w istocie syntezy najbardziej wartościowych intuicji wschodniego chrześcijaństwa z teologicznymi wątkami filozofii niemieckiego romantyzmu, a także średniowiecznej zachodniej mistyki inspirowanej duchowością i nauczaniem św. Augustyna.
In this special "Get to Know the Staff" episode, Pastor Bobby sits down with Lexi Bruner, the NorthWoods Communications Director and the new voice of the NorthWoods Church Matters podcast. Lexi shares about her small-town upbringing, her journey to USI, and how a shift from long-term care to marketing set her on a path she never expected. She describes growing up a "Christmas and Easter" churchgoer, how God woke her up from that, and the big part that NorthWoods has played in her testimony. Lexi and Bobby also look ahead to the future of the podcast: why it matters for discipleship in a growing church, how it creates space for conversations that Sunday mornings can't hold, and what's coming when the new building opens, including the launch of a full vodcast. Lexi even shares her dream guest list (and Bobby doesn't shoot any of them down!).

The Holy Spirit and the ChurchEphesians 4:1-6Message SlidesI believe in the Holy Spirit - Who applies the work of Christ - Who makes us holy - Who unifies usI believe in the holy catholic Church, the communion of saintsBook recommendation:Keep in Step with the Spirit by JI PackerHOME CHURCH QUESTIONS1. When you think about the Holy Spirit, what images or ideas come to your mind? What Bible passages are most informative for how you think about the Holy Spirit? 2. Do you think there is more mystery surrounding the Holy Spirit than there is with the Father and the Son? Explain why.3. Ephesians 1:3-14, 2:4-6, and 3:16-17 reveal a close relationship between the Spirit and the Son. Look at these passages (and/or John 16:14) and talk about the nature of this relationship. Based on these passages, how can we know if the Spirit is at work in our lives?4. The 3rd Person of the Trinity is called “Holy” because one of His roles is to make us holy. Ephesians 5:18 refers to this as being “filled with the Spirit.” Explain what this means and how we can know if we are being filled with the Spirit. In what areas of your life can you become more controlled by the Spirit? 5. Ephesians 4:4 says, “there is one body and one Spirit.” Explain the relationship among the Spirit, the church, and unity. What does it look like for us to work for unity in the church? Why is this essential? 6. What is the universal, invisible church? What is the local, visible church? Which of these do you tend to emphasize? Why are both important?Mission Highlight - The Java Pesisir Lor in Indonesia The Java Pesisir Lor are a coastal Javanese sub-ethnic group living along northern Java. Almost €9.4 million was laundered through money mule accounts in the 12 months to H1 2025, according to new figures released today by FraudSMART, the fraud awareness initiative led by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI). While the amounts moved through these accounts vary, they typically range between €5,000 and €10,000 per case. The publication of today's figures come as FraudSMART, with support from AMLÉ (formerly the Union of Students Ireland or USI), launches the 'Don't be a mule' campaign. A money mule is someone who receives stolen money or proceeds of crime into their bank account and transfers it into another account, often in return for money or an expensive gift. While people of any age are susceptible to becoming a money mule, FraudSMART members have found that the majority of money mule bank accounts belong to those aged between 18 and 24 years of age, with some cases involving children as young as 14. New research conducted by FraudSMART reveals that: Almost a third (30%) of 18-24-year-olds reported that they, or someone they know, have been approached to use their bank account to transfer money. One in four (27%) 18-24-year-olds admitted they would be likely to consider using their bank account to transfer money on behalf of someone else, in exchange for keeping some of the money. 47% of 18-24-year-olds said they had never heard of the term money mule and 52% said they did not understand what it means. Awareness of the consequences of money muling is lower among 18-24-year-olds compared to older age groups. 26% are unaware that it could help fund other criminal activity, 31% are unaware that they would be committing a money laundering offence, 35% do not understand they could face jail time, and 42% are unaware it could affect their ability to obtain international travel or work visas. 60% of parents of teenagers surveyed said they have not discussed the risks of money muling with their children. Young people are being recruited through social media adverts promising 'easy' money Niamh Davenport, Head of Financial Crime, BPFI said: "Criminals are increasingly using social media to target teenagers and young adults, luring them with cash or gifts to act as money mules. Alarmingly, our research shows that nearly one in three (30%) people aged 18-24 have either been approached themselves or know someone who has been asked to move money through their bank account. Even more concerning, more than one in four (27%) of this age group admit they would be willing to transfer money on behalf of someone else in exchange for keeping a share of the money. This willingness highlights just how critical it is that we raise awareness of the risk - both in terms of serious criminal consequences and the fact that money is often linked to wider financial crime networks that fuel drugs, human trafficking, and other serious offences. An Garda Síochána warns about serious consequences of money muling Michael Cryan, Detective Superintendent at the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau stated: "It's vital that young people realise this is far from a 'victimless' crime and the consequences of taking part are severe. This is money laundering and the funds moved by money mules are linked to criminal activity, often stolen from innocent people through scams such as text message and email scams. Even more alarming, these funds frequently go on to bankroll other serious crimes including terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking and pay the bribes that corrupt people the world over. Money mules are recruited by Transnational Criminal Organisations and money mules enhance their capability to commit serious crimes. The money mule is a vital cog in the operations of these Transnational Criminal Organisations. That's why money muling carries such serious penalties, including the risk of a criminal record and prison sentence."
An edited version of this essay was published by Deccan Herald at https://www.deccanherald.com/opinion/decoding-trump-s-tariff-tantrums-3694626, as the editor downplayed the ‘vote chori' INDI alliance story and the atrocities by Tipu on Hindu Kerala. Last month, I wrote here about India's splendid diplomatic isolation, but my prediction became fact sooner than I expected, with President Trump's withering attacks on India. Biden drove Russia into China's arms over Ukraine; Trump seems intent on driving India into China's arms; and Ukraine isn't even Asia's problem, but a likely Chinese invasion of Taiwan would beThere are at least four different ways in which one could rationalize the Trump position:* A negotiating opening gambit to soften up India* Frustration from the lack of leverage against Presidents Putin and Xi* Part of a regime-change operation planned by the Deep State* A desire to force manufacturing and investment to move back to the USI hope it is a combination of 1 and 2, and that better sense will prevail before a mutually-beneficial Indo-US relationship is damaged beyond repair. However, there is a non-trivial chance that, with prompting by Britain's Whitehall (which created Pakistan in the first place to keep India in check), the US Deep State has decided to target India.I wrote a couple of years ago that the Deep State, intimidated by China's rise, might accept a condominium with it, giving each a sphere of influence. China gets Asia and the Indian Ocean; the US gets the Americas, Europe and the Atlantic; and they share the Pacific. India, Japan, Australia (i.e. the Quad), and ASEAN become Chinese vassals. So like the Vatican-brokered Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 that divided the world between Spain and Portugal! There is also the anti-Thucydides Trap, wherein the incumbent power (the US), instead of resisting the rise of the challenger (China), helped it grow, deluding themselves that China would be benign. However, both are now employing all possible means against new challenger India's rise, including trying to balkanize the latter. That is Scenario 3, the Deep State playbook of ‘color revolutions' against governments they don't like for whatever reason. The continuous INDI Alliance efforts to stir up linguistic or caste-based divisions in India, along with the recent ‘Vote Chori' fuss to delegitimize India's democracy, are part of the toolkit: declare a regime undesirable, then topple it. In 2024 they almost succeeded, but not quite. They will keep trying.Scenario 4 makes a strange sort of sense. Trump realizes the US erred badly in relinquishing manufacturing to China, and wants to pull it back; also he has no interest in India becoming a new manufacturing power. Similarly, the ‘deals' forcing Japan, the EU, Korea et al to invest billions of dollars in the US (and Ukraine, which lives on charity, has promised to spend $100 billion in the US!) are extortionate: a sort of neo-imperialism.The effort to browbeat India into buying more US weapons is part of this: Trump aide Peter Navarro grumbled that India buys 36% of its armaments from Russia. He omitted to mention that this is down from 70+% a decade ago. Sadly, US armaments and aerospace products (e.g. the F-35 and Boeing 787s) are now seen as not so reliable. The moral posturing about India's purchases of Russian oil leading to deaths of Ukrainians is downright bizarre. It's just business, Trump aide Scott Bessent, why repeat INDI's Ambani-Adani mantra? Remember your own ‘robber barons' and “What's good for General Motors is good for America”? There are many examples of profit above morals. One is the 1973 oil price crisis, when OPEC suddenly quadrupled crude oil prices, forcing a massive transfer of wealth from developing countries, quite likely causing starvation deaths. The US could have persuaded (or bullied) OPEC into preventing the price rise. But it didn't. Why? Because those petro-dollars were recycled into buying American weapons. The Military Industrial Complex prospered. No morality there. There is an earlier parallel. Tipu Sultan invaded Kerala in the 1780s with a reign of terror, massacres, loot of Hindu temples, pillage, forced conversions and so on. The British did nothing, despite a treaty with Travancore. After Tipu had amassed all the looted treasure in one place, the British killed him, and stole all of it themselves. The British came out smelling of roses because they killed a tyrant, and they had the loot. Two birds, one stone. No morality there, either.Given all this, there's one thing India needs to do urgently: gain leverage, a bargaining chip. China has rare earths, OPEC has oil. India should use the 100,000 H1-B folks who are likely to be forced out from the US to gain leverage through first-class software products.760 words, 20 Aug 2025, updated 21 Aug 2025 This is a public episode.

Usiądź wygodnie i posłuchaj. He holds a PhD in Finance from Université de Neuchâtel.Laurent joined Merle to discuss the topic of investing pension funds in startups through Swiss VC funds. Although most Swiss pension funds are currently invested in bonds, stocks, real estate and cash, 5% of it goes into private equity or private debt. There are, however, some caveats to this type of investment: the investment must be made in entities located in Switzerland, and money cannot be borrowed to increase the size of the investment. Laurent argues that more Swiss pension fund money should be invested in Swiss startups, in a risk-controlled environment, to help bridge the funding gap for growth-stage Swiss startups. He warns that investment choices must not be network/politically based, but instead driven by neutral market expertise. Laurent and Merle also discussed the possibility of creating a “fund of funds”, meaning a fund of startup investing experts who would invest the money trusted to them by pension fund investors. In this solo episode, I dive deep into the powerful and often unnoticed impact of the stories we tell about others—especially as leaders. Over the years, I've developed a methodology called the Confidence Method, which helps individuals identify the sources of their fear, doubt, and insecurity, and transform their beliefs into something positive and empowering. But today, I want to explore a new angle. It's not just about the stories we tell ourselves or the ones told to us about ourselves. There's a third story—the stories we tell others about who they are.As leaders, our words carry immense weight. As parents, as coaches, as managers, and as partners, the way we communicate has a lasting impact on others. Every time we speak into someone's performance, identity, or character, we plant a seed—a narrative they might carry with them for years to come. And the sad reality is, they often remember what we say long after we've forgotten it.The Impact of Our WordsIt's easy to underestimate the power of a casual comment or throwaway line, but it matters. The feedback, praise, or critique we give (even unknowingly) shapes someone's self-perception. These seemingly small moments—whether positive or negative—create stories that others believe about themselves. And when those stories become internalized, they guide their actions and self-worth.I want you to pause and think: What stories are you telling your team? How about your kids, your partners, or your friends? Every time you speak into their character, you're influencing their view of themselves—whether you intend to or not.The Stories Told to UsI want to remind you: this isn't just about what we tell others—it's about recognizing the stories that were told to us about who we are. These stories have shaped us in ways we sometimes don't even realize. The Confidence Method helps us uncover these narratives, but today, I'm challenging you to consider what narratives you're writing for others, especially as a leader. We all know how powerful it is to be told something positive about ourselves—it boosts our confidence, reaffirms our potential, and pushes us to achieve more. But the opposite is just as true. Negative comments, even if we dismiss them in the moment, can linger for years, shaping our self-image in a negative light.Casual Conversations MatterI want to be clear: I'm not suggesting we avoid giving feedback or accountability. That's an essential part of leadership. What I am encouraging is intentionality. How do we ensure that our feedback, comments, and praise shape the person we want to lead, not in a way that leaves them feeling diminished?Even the smallest interactions matter. A facial expression in a meeting, being on your phone while someone speaks, or a rush job email can all unintentionally shape the way someone sees themselves. These actions speak louder than words, and they contribute to the ongoing narrative about their identity. How Are You Shaping Identity? As leaders, we shape identity every day. Our words can either reflect someone's true potential or hide it behind layers of doubt and confusion. Every interaction—whether it's a casual hallway chat or a formal meeting—adds to the story of who they think they are. So, I want you to consider: When is the last time you told someone exactly what you saw in them? Not just their performance, but their value. When's the last time you shared what you truly believe about their potential? It's crucial that we not only hold people accountable but do so in a way that aligns with what we believe to be true about them. We need to be strategic in how we use our words to build people up rather than inadvertently reinforcing their doubts or limitations.Shaping a Life of ConfidenceAs I wrap up, I want to remind you of one thing: The stories we hear about ourselves can shape everything we do. And the stories we tell others about themselves have the same impact. So as leaders, we must be intentional with our words. Let's think about how we're shaping others' stories and ensuring that we are lifting them up, not inadvertently creating narratives of limitation. If this message resonated with you, I encourage you to think about how you're leading your team, your family, and the people in your life. Are you shaping them with intentionality? Are you allowing room for them to see their potential, even when they don't believe it themselves?Final Thoughts & InvitationIf you've been thinking about how you're telling stories in your leadership and personal life, I want to encourage you to go deeper. Ask yourself: What stories am I telling those around me? How can I be more strategic and human with the words I choose to shape their confidence? If you want to dive deeper into these concepts, I invite you to join me for my free monthly leadership workshop where we discuss how to lead with clarity, confidence, and intention. Have you ever been working on a deal where you had this feeling, this intuition, this Spidey sense—something in the back of your mind telling you that this wasn't going to close? That you were going to waste your time? Maybe you had one of the stakeholders who was against you—an enemy. There was a naysayer who kept calling you out. Perhaps the stakeholders weren't engaged, or the incumbent vendor was so integrated into the organization that it would be very difficult to displace them. Whatever the case, you knew in the back of your mind that you weren't going to close the deal. But you kept working on it anyway. You rode that puppy to the ocean floor like the Titanic that it was. If you've done this, and I know you have, take heart because we've all been there. We've all had these situations, and we've later regretted them. Top Sales Pros are Quick to Walk Away From Bad Deals One of the traits of Ultra-High Performers that has always been true is that they're very quick to walk away from a deal they can't close—a deal where they've concluded that the probability of winning is so low it doesn't meet their threshold. The reason Ultra-High Performers walk away from deals like this is simple: They know that the greatest waste of their time is investing it with the wrong prospect. The time they invest in a prospect that's not going to close is money down the drain, because it's time they can't focus on a deal that will close. But average salespeople? They hang on—hoping against hope that somehow, miraculously, things will turn around. In sales, awareness matters. You must always know where the exit is. There are two primary reasons why salespeople work on deals that are never going to close. Understanding these reasons is the first step to avoiding the trap. Reason #1: The Failure to Qualify Properly Too often, qualifying is treated like a one-and-done activity. We qualify the opportunity against our ICP. We qualify the numbers, budget, timing, urgency, and whether we're talking to a decision-maker with buying authority. These are all quantifiable metrics that we can measure and check off our list. But Ultra-High Performers take qualifying to the next level. Rather than making it a quick process, they understand that qualifying is never done. It's an ongoing process of awareness that keeps you tethered to reality in every deal. And their top qualifier, once they've checked off the must-haves, is engagement. Are the stakeholders engaged? Are they leaning in? Are they matching your effort, answering questions, and working collaboratively with you? It's okay that there are some stakeholders who may be naysayers. That's normal in complex deals. But if you've got stakeholders who are enemies—people who are actively working against you—then your deal might be a bridge too far. Engagement is my No. 1 qualifier. I'm constantly asking questions and giving stakeholders things to do to see whether or not they're engaged. If they're not engaged, I walk away because lack of engagement is a clear signal that you are not going to close the deal. Reason #2: An Empty Pipeline This brings us to the second reason salespeople stay in bad deals—desperation born from an empty pipeline. On Friday, Dennis J. Walker, who is a benefits consultant with USI, posted something on LinkedIn that perfectly captures this dynamic. Here's exactly what he wrote: Jeb Blount regularly states that you can't be delusional about your pipe, your prospects, your efforts, etc and be successful as a salesperson. This week one of the larger deals in my pipe definitely didn't progress the way I wanted- and it turns out one of the executives is what I call a "deal enemy" - he was actively working against me and my team. The last two meetings I've had with him tipped me off this could be the case; this week we had an incident that indicated he was actively working against us. Because my pipe is full? I can walk away from this (probably very bad) deal at a dysfunctional company and not worry about hitting my sales goal. With their current leadership, they'll be a terrible client. Helping them will be painful. And I know I can help them with creativity, doing things differently, and giving them a lot of what they want and have at better pricing and higher quality. But I'm not freaking out. Because I have 15 other prospects, three that are advancing well, and about a dozen additional companies with buying windows later this year or early next. The Psychology of Pipeline Abundance When your pipeline is thin, every prospect feels like life or death, leading to poor decisions and desperate behavior. You cling to bad deals because they're all you have. When you're desperate, you get delusional. And when you get delusional, you lose perspective. You become unable to see the truth, so you keep working on a deal that's never going to close—even though your intuition and everyone around one are telling you to walk away. The Power to Walk Away from Bad Deals What strikes me most about Dennis' story is the psychological shift that happens when you're selling from a position of abundance versus scarcity. A robust sales pipeline is about more than numbers—it's about the freedom to make better decisions. When you invest in building a pipeline, if you're prospecting every single day, if you're out there talking with people—knocking on doors, picking up the phone, working LinkedIn, doing the hard work of filling your funnel—then when you get that Spidey sense that you should be walking away from a deal, it's a lot easier to find the exit. It's a lot easier to pull out of that deal because you know you have lots of other options. You gain clarity. You can see the situation for what it really is instead of what you desperately need it to be. How many of us have stayed in toxic sales situations simply because we didn't have better options lined up? Whether you're in sales, consulting, or running your own business, this principle applies universally. A strong pipeline helps you maintain your standards and allows you to focus on clients who truly value what you bring to the table. How to Recognize Bad Deal Warning Signs So what are the warning signs that you should be looking for? When should your internal alarm bells start going off? Lack of Engagement: Stakeholders aren't returning calls promptly, they're not asking questions, they're not doing the homework you give them. They're treating you like a vendor, not a partner. Internal Politics: You discover there are significant internal battles you weren't aware of, or you realize you're being used as leverage against an incumbent or preferred vendor. Moving Goalposts: Requirements keep changing, timelines keep shifting, and new stakeholders keep appearing who weren't a part of the original process. Budget Issues: The budget that was "approved" suddenly needs "additional review," or you're being asked to match prices that seem unrealistically low. Decision-Making Dysfunction: The decision-making process is unclear, constantly changing, or involves people who refuse to meet with you. Your Gut: Sometimes you just know. That intuition, that Spidey sense—don't ignore it. Your subconscious is picking up on signals your conscious mind hasn't fully processed yet. Situational Awareness Matters in Sales Take a look at the deals you're working on right now. If you're working on an opportunity that everything inside you says is not going to close, if the people around you are telling you it's not going to close, maybe it's time to pick up your sticks and walk away. And if you don't feel like you have the ability to walk away, perhaps it's time to take a deeper, harder look at your pipeline and decide whether prospecting is your issue—not the fact that you've got bad deals in your pipe. Remember, in complex deals, situation awareness matters. You must always know where the exit is. And the best exit strategy is having so many options that walking away from bad deals becomes easy. Top sales pros don't just know where the exit is, and they're not afraid to use it. Hear more about how Ultra-High Performers sniff out bad deals on the Sales Gravy Podcast.

Usiądź wygodnie i posłuchaj. 7.
