The Stories We Tell Them

Be Known w/ Rocky Garza

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2025 8:32

In this solo episode, I dive deep into the powerful and often unnoticed impact of the stories we tell about others—especially as leaders. Over the years, I've developed a methodology called the Confidence Method, which helps individuals identify the sources of their fear, doubt, and insecurity, and transform their beliefs into something positive and empowering. But today, I want to explore a new angle. It's not just about the stories we tell ourselves or the ones told to us about ourselves. There's a third story—the stories we tell others about who they are.As leaders, our words carry immense weight. As parents, as coaches, as managers, and as partners, the way we communicate has a lasting impact on others. Every time we speak into someone's performance, identity, or character, we plant a seed—a narrative they might carry with them for years to come. And the sad reality is, they often remember what we say long after we've forgotten it.The Impact of Our WordsIt's easy to underestimate the power of a casual comment or throwaway line, but it matters. The feedback, praise, or critique we give (even unknowingly) shapes someone's self-perception. These seemingly small moments—whether positive or negative—create stories that others believe about themselves. And when those stories become internalized, they guide their actions and self-worth.I want you to pause and think: What stories are you telling your team? How about your kids, your partners, or your friends? Every time you speak into their character, you're influencing their view of themselves—whether you intend to or not.The Stories Told to UsI want to remind you: this isn't just about what we tell others—it's about recognizing the stories that were told to us about who we are. These stories have shaped us in ways we sometimes don't even realize. The Confidence Method helps us uncover these narratives, but today, I'm challenging you to consider what narratives you're writing for others, especially as a leader. We all know how powerful it is to be told something positive about ourselves—it boosts our confidence, reaffirms our potential, and pushes us to achieve more. But the opposite is just as true. Negative comments, even if we dismiss them in the moment, can linger for years, shaping our self-image in a negative light.Casual Conversations MatterI want to be clear: I'm not suggesting we avoid giving feedback or accountability. That's an essential part of leadership. What I am encouraging is intentionality. How do we ensure that our feedback, comments, and praise shape the person we want to lead, not in a way that leaves them feeling diminished?Even the smallest interactions matter. A facial expression in a meeting, being on your phone while someone speaks, or a rush job email can all unintentionally shape the way someone sees themselves. These actions speak louder than words, and they contribute to the ongoing narrative about their identity. How Are You Shaping Identity? As leaders, we shape identity every day. Our words can either reflect someone's true potential or hide it behind layers of doubt and confusion. Every interaction—whether it's a casual hallway chat or a formal meeting—adds to the story of who they think they are. So, I want you to consider: When is the last time you told someone exactly what you saw in them? Not just their performance, but their value. When's the last time you shared what you truly believe about their potential? It's crucial that we not only hold people accountable but do so in a way that aligns with what we believe to be true about them. We need to be strategic in how we use our words to build people up rather than inadvertently reinforcing their doubts or limitations.Shaping a Life of ConfidenceAs I wrap up, I want to remind you of one thing: The stories we hear about ourselves can shape everything we do. And the stories we tell others about themselves have the same impact. So as leaders, we must be intentional with our words. Let's think about how we're shaping others' stories and ensuring that we are lifting them up, not inadvertently creating narratives of limitation. If this message resonated with you, I encourage you to think about how you're leading your team, your family, and the people in your life. Are you shaping them with intentionality? Are you allowing room for them to see their potential, even when they don't believe it themselves?Final Thoughts & InvitationIf you've been thinking about how you're telling stories in your leadership and personal life, I want to encourage you to go deeper. Ask yourself: What stories am I telling those around me? How can I be more strategic and human with the words I choose to shape their confidence? If you want to dive deeper into these concepts, I invite you to join me for my free monthly leadership workshop where we discuss how to lead with clarity, confidence, and intention. Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount
Top Sales Pros Know When to Exit Bad Deals (Money Monday)

Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2025 9:29

Have you ever been working on a deal where you had this feeling, this intuition, this Spidey sense—something in the back of your mind telling you that this wasn't going to close? That you were going to waste your time? Maybe you had one of the stakeholders who was against you—an enemy. There was a naysayer who kept calling you out. Perhaps the stakeholders weren't engaged, or the incumbent vendor was so integrated into the organization that it would be very difficult to displace them. Whatever the case, you knew in the back of your mind that you weren't going to close the deal. But you kept working on it anyway. You rode that puppy to the ocean floor like the Titanic that it was. If you've done this, and I know you have, take heart because we've all been there. We've all had these situations, and we've later regretted them.  Top Sales Pros are Quick to Walk Away From Bad Deals  One of the traits of Ultra-High Performers that has always been true is that they're very quick to walk away from a deal they can't close—a deal where they've concluded that the probability of winning is so low it doesn't meet their threshold. The reason Ultra-High Performers walk away from deals like this is simple: They know that the greatest waste of their time is investing it with the wrong prospect. The time they invest in a prospect that's not going to close is money down the drain, because it's time they can't focus on a deal that will close. But average salespeople? They hang on—hoping against hope that somehow, miraculously, things will turn around. In sales, awareness matters. You must always know where the exit is. There are two primary reasons why salespeople work on deals that are never going to close. Understanding these reasons is the first step to avoiding the trap. Reason #1: The Failure to Qualify Properly Too often, qualifying is treated like a one-and-done activity. We qualify the opportunity against our ICP. We qualify the numbers, budget, timing, urgency, and whether we're talking to a decision-maker with buying authority.  These are all quantifiable metrics that we can measure and check off our list.  But Ultra-High Performers take qualifying to the next level. Rather than making it a quick process, they understand that qualifying is never done. It's an ongoing process of awareness that keeps you tethered to reality in every deal. And their top qualifier, once they've checked off the must-haves, is engagement. Are the stakeholders engaged? Are they leaning in? Are they matching your effort, answering questions, and working collaboratively with you? It's okay that there are some stakeholders who may be naysayers. That's normal in complex deals. But if you've got stakeholders who are enemies—people who are actively working against you—then your deal might be a bridge too far.  Engagement is my No. 1 qualifier. I'm constantly asking questions and giving stakeholders things to do to see whether or not they're engaged. If they're not engaged, I walk away because lack of engagement is a clear signal that you are not going to close the deal.  Reason #2: An Empty Pipeline This brings us to the second reason salespeople stay in bad deals—desperation born from an empty pipeline. On Friday, Dennis J. Walker, who is a benefits consultant with USI, posted something on LinkedIn that perfectly captures this dynamic. Here's exactly what he wrote: Jeb Blount regularly states that you can't be delusional about your pipe, your prospects, your efforts, etc and be successful as a salesperson. This week one of the larger deals in my pipe definitely didn't progress the way I wanted- and it turns out one of the executives is what I call a "deal enemy" - he was actively working against me and my team. The last two meetings I've had with him tipped me off this could be the case; this week we had an incident that indicated he was actively working against us. Because my pipe is full?

Usiądź wygodnie i posłuchaj. 7. 8. GABBARE Prendere in giro.

Piotr Sikora, filozof, publicysta „Tygodnika” i nauczyciel medytacji zaprasza do wspólnego poznawania tekstów chrześcijaństwa i buddyzmu oraz innych tradycji, i do wspólnych praktyk duchowych.

(5) Do którego bowiem z aniołów Bóg kiedykolwiek powiedział: Ty jesteś moim Synem, Ja Cię dziś zrodziłem? I gdzie indziej: Ja będę mu Ojcem, a On będzie mi Synem? (6) A gdy wprowadza Pierworodnego na świat, mówi: Niech Jemu oddają pokłon wszyscy aniołowie Boży. (7) O aniołach wprawdzie powiedziano: On swych aniołów czyni wichrami, a swych podwładnych płomieniami ognia; (8) lecz o Synu: Twój tron, o Boże, trwać będzie na wieki, berłem prawości berło Twojego Królestwa. (4) Jednocześnie Bóg poświadczał je znakami i cudami, różnorodnymi przejawami mocy i udzielaniem Ducha Świętego według swojej woli. Nauczanie z dnia 26 stycznia 2026

Ów chłop siedział wraz z innymi w szynku i pił. Seasonal Eating Made Simple: How We Cook and Eat with the Seasons at Home

The Slow Living Collective

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 7, 2024 24:22

Why Seasonal Eating matters to usI talk about eating seasonally quite a lot, and it's something we make a priority in our home, but what actually is seasonal eating? Seasonal eating is simply about consuming fresh, local foods that are in season in our locality, and this will look different for everyone, depending on where you live. When we eat seasonally we are about to enjoy fruits and vegetables at their peak, both in terms of their taste but also at their peak of their nutritional value too. Nature provides an abundance of fruit and veg, and it's no coincidence that it offers the right food, with the right nutrients, at the right time and in the right season. Essentially, when you eat seasonally you are providing your body with the right nutrients it needs at just the right time, in your locality. It's mindblowing when you start to look into it. But also makes you think “well of course that make sense”.I think with so many of these things connected to the ways in which our ancestors live we already know these things, deep down at least, we just need to be reminded. It's almost like it sits, untapped in our DNA, passed down through the generations. For anyone coming to seasonal living for the first time, let me dive a little deeper: Seasonal eating is exactly what it sounds like — eating what's in season. It means filling your plate with fruits and vegetables that are naturally growing during a specific time of year in your region. So, instead of grabbing strawberries in the middle of winter or tomatoes shipped across the world, you're enjoying foods at their freshest, when they're at their peak ripeness and flavour for where you live. The idea is to align your meals with what's naturally available, and trust me, once you start doing this, you'll notice how much better your food tastes. And the flavour is just one part of it all. There are so many benefits to seasonal eating. First off, it's more nutritious because when produce is harvested at its prime and doesn't have to travel thousands of miles to reach the supermarket, it retains more of its vitamins and minerals. You're getting the best of the best in terms of health benefits. For us, embracing seasonal eating has completely changed how we approach food over the years. We've gone from mindlessly picking up the same things week after week to really being intentional about what we're putting on the table. It's not just about eating; it's about enjoying the process, slowing down, and being more connected to the food we eat and the land it comes from. It's how we stay grounded and aligned with the cycles of the seasons too. We love how it encourages us to slow down, enjoy what's available, and appreciate each season's wonders.Seasonal eating has become such a natural rhythm for our family, and it's brought so much joy and mindfulness into our kitchen.Today I'm pulling back the curtain on what seasonal eating looks like in our home, but if you want to dive even deeper into how we've made this a way of life, be sure to check out my latest podcast episode. I break down how we meal plan, shop, and cook seasonally throughout the year, plus I'm sharing some simple tips to help you bring the magic of seasonal eating into your own home. So, grab your headphones, tune in, and let's take this journey together.Let's slow down and journey together through the seasons with simplicity and mindfulness. Subscribe for simple musings directly to your inbox. Our Seasonal Eating Routine at HomeWhen I share about eating seasonally I think the biggest question I get is: but what do you cook? And the answer is so simple. But I think sometimes we get so caught up in overthinking it that it seems like it might be harder than it sounds. For us it's simple: We eat our regularly enjoyed meals, and we make them with seasonal produce. So it might be that we eat more casseroles with root veg through the autumn, or more tomato based dishes and salads through the summer. It's not about changing what you eat or what you enjoy; instead, it's about being more thoughtful with the ingredients and choosing seasonally appropriate fruits and vegetables where possible. And it's not about perfection, it's just about doing what we can. In our home, seasonal eating is a way of life, and each season brings its own unique rhythm to our kitchen. I know it can be hard to think about how it might work when you first start out, so let me take you through what this looks like for us, season by season, and share how we embrace seasonal eating throughout each season.Spring is all about renewal and freshness. After the heavier meals of winter, our family craves light, vibrant dishes. We start incorporating more greens like spinach, wild garlic, purple sprouting broccoli and asparagus into our meals. I love making simple spring salads with peas and herbs or roasting asparagus with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. Spring is also when we start getting those first glimpses of early strawberries if the weather allows, which find their way into everything here.Summer is the season when everything seems to burst with colour and flavour. Our table is often overflowing with juicy homegrown tomatoes, cucumbers, and courgettes fresh from our allotment garden. For summer dinners are often simple — think grilled veggies, fresh salads, and big bowls of berries for dessert. We pair it with something like grilled meat or halloumi. When Autumn rolls around, we start to lean into heartier, more grounding foods. Squash, pumpkins, and apples take center stage, especially adding in roast joints of meat or warming casseroles. Autumn is the season where we really start to slow down in the kitchen, embracing those comforting, nourishing meals that make you feel like you're preparing for winter's rest. I am not ashamed to admit, it's my absolute favourite season, both in general and in the kitchen. And when Winter sets in, we turn to root vegetables like carrots, parsnips and potatoes, as well as hardy leafy greens like black kale and cabbage. These veggies keep us going through the colder months, and we often roast, steam or throw them in a casserole for meals that are both hearty and nourishing. Winter is also when we pull out any preserved goods — jams, pickles, or tomato sauces we made during the warmer months. We love making soups from what's in the pantry, adding greens and grains for a meal that feels nourishing and restorative. Winter might be cold and dark, but in our kitchen, it's all about warmth and comfort. Each season brings its own abundance, and by embracing that natural rhythm, we not only eat better, but we also stay more connected to the world around us. It's a beautiful reminder of how nature provides exactly what we need, exactly when we need it.So where do you start? Here are some of the practical tips that have helped our family embrace seasonal eating. Whether you're just starting or already love cooking with the seasons, these ideas can make the whole process feel a little simple and even more enjoyable.Meal Planning with the seasons is definitely one of the easiest ways to start. I check what's in season and build our meals around those ingredients, so instead of forcing a recipe with out-of-season produce, I'll focus on what's freshest. Letting the produce guide my meal plan helps keep things fresh and exciting in the kitchen.Going to a farm shop is hands down one of my favourite parts of seasonal eating. There's something special about picking up produce straight from the source, knowing it was harvested just a day or two before. Look for produce that's in season — this is usually what's in abundance and often at its best price. It's helpful to get to know the local farmers and ask questions. They'll know exactly what's at its peak and can often give you tips for cooking it. Preserving is also key to making the most of what's in season, especially when you want to enjoy it beyond its natural seasonal window. It's a great way to stretch out that seasonal abundance, especially when we have more than we can use right away. Canning is another great option, especially for fruits — there's nothing quite like cracking open a jar of homemade jam in the middle of winter and remembering those warm, sunny days.If you're looking to embrace seasonal eating with ease, I can't recommend Riverford Fruit and Veg Boxes enough! These beautifully curated boxes bring the freshest, organic produce straight from the farm right to your doorstep, making it so simple to eat in harmony with the seasons. We have been using Riverford for almost 2 years and we love it - the excitement of getting our box every other week is still as exciting as it was on the first day. There are so many different boxes to choose from and include a mix seasonal fruits and/or vegetables that really help to embrace seasonal eating in the kitchen. Plus, when you support Riverford it also means you're also backing sustainable farming practices and local communities. It's a win-win! And here's a little bonus: by using this link, you can get £15 off your second box! So go ahead, treat yourself to a box.I know what you're thinking, that all this comes at a much higher price tag, and I am not going to lie, sometimes it does come at a cost. But that being said budget-friendly seasonal eating is totally doable, and one of the best ways to save money while still enjoying fresh, local produce. The key is to buy produce when it's at its peak — this is when it's most plentiful and often cheaper. For example, during autumn, you'll find an abundance of squash, apples, and root vegetables, all at more affordable prices than out-of-season options. And you don't have to step away from the supermarket if it's not affordable. You can still absolutely live with the seasons when it comes to your produce by just selecting produce that is in season from the supermarket. We have more energy, our bodies feel nourished, and the flavours are just incredible — it's nature's way of giving us exactly what we need, when we need it.But it's not just about the food; it's about how we cook, too. Mindful cooking has become a joyful ritual in our home. Instead of rushing through meal prep, we've slowed down to really appreciate the ingredients. Each meal has turned into an adventure, where we experiment with flavours and try new recipes based on what's fresh and available. Cooking together has transformed into a bonding experience as we gather in the kitchen. It feels less like a chore and more like a celebration of the season. Then there's the deeper connection we've formed with nature and the seasons too. Being aware of what's in season has made us more in tune with the earth and the cycles that govern it. Our trips to the supermarket or the farm shop have become a highlight instead of a chore. It's such a grounding experience that reminds us that food is so much more than just fuel for our bodies — it's a connection to the land and the incredible people who nurture it.Embracing seasonal eating has prompted a beautiful mindset shift for our family, alongside that of living more slowly, simply and seasonally in every area of our lives. Episode: 14 Chapter Fourteen of Anyone, Not Everyone highlights the power of vertical outbound sales and marketing strategies, stressing the importance of proactively reaching out to potential clients within a targeted vertical market. It introduces the concept of the Zone of Indifference, where the majority of clients are neither actively seeking nor strongly opposed to new services, and emphasizes the necessity of targeted, personalized outreach, using unique and memorable gifts (USI gifts) to make a warm and lasting impression. The chapter also notes common outbound mistakes and provides practical steps for effective outbound campaigns. Reminder that this is a chapter in Corey Quinn's book, Anyone, Not Everyone. Over the next few weeks, we'll be releasing a few chapters at a time so that you can escape founder-led sales. Editor's Note: This episode first aired in July, 2023With 'Oppenheimer,' director Christopher Nolan turned the Manhattan Project into an Academy-Award-winning blockbuster. The film is set in Los Alamos, where the first atomic bomb was tested. But few people know the history of Carrizozo, a rural farming area downwind of the test.Radioactive fallout from the bomb settled on everything: the soil, gardens, and drinking water. Cow's milk became radioactive. Later, hundreds of people developed radiogenic cancers. The people of Carrizozo were among the first people in the world exposed to a nuclear blast. More than 75 years later, their families are still fighting for medical compensation from the federal government.Host Nate Hegyi traveled to New Mexico to visit the Trinity Site, and to hear the stories of so-called ‘downwinders'.Featuring: Paul Pino, Tina Cordova, Ben Ray Lujan SUPPORTOutside/In is made possible with listener support. This one from Los Alamos found that there was still contamination in the area in 1985. Another, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, produced one of the most in-depth histories of the fallout from Trinity and the government's reaction. The National Cancer Institute found that hundreds of people likely developed cancer because of the fallout. The history of Trinity is full of strange little details, like the desert toads that were croaking all night. You can find affidavits and first-hand accounts of the fallout from Trinity at the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium website. This review by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists explains why it's so hard to determine a definitive death toll for the USI bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII.  CREDITSHost: Nate HegyiReported and produced by Nate HegyiEdited by Taylor QuimbyEditing help from Rebecca Lavoie, Justine Paradis, Felix Poon, and Jeongyoon HanRebecca Lavoie is our Executive ProducerMusic for this episode by Blue Dot SessionsOutside/In is a production of New Hampshire Public Radio
