For part two of a two part eTown re-airing, we're joined by eTown veteran Aoife O'Donovan of the Grammy Award-winning band “I'm With Her.” Aoife returns to eTown for a very special performance with collaborator Jeremy Kittel, who co-produced and arranged Aoife's Bull Frogs Croon (And Other Songs) EP. Aoife and Jeremy are also joined by a string quartet. Also with us for their visit is Latin and American roots band Che Apalache, featuring three powerhouse Latin American musicians – two from Argentina, Franco Martino (guitar), Martin Bobrik (mandolin), and Pau Barjau (banjo) from Mexico, as well as worldly frontman Joe Troop. Nick also sits down for a conversation with Bea Johnson, author of Zero Waste Home. Bea initiated the zero-waste movement and shares her tips for living a more sustainable lifestyle.
This week, appropriately, we have an especially international eTown show, one in which the performances and conversations were all so strong that we're presenting it in two parts. Irish-American singer-songwriter Aoife O'Donovan of the Grammy Award-winning band “I'm With Her” returns to eTown, sharing pieces from her latest collaboration with Jeremy Kittel, who co-produced and arranged Aoife's first new studio recording in four years. With us for their first visit is the Latin American and North American, Grammy-nominated roots band Che Apalache, featuring band members from Argentina, Mexico, and North Carolina (home of band leader, Joe Troop). Plus, we'll visit with KC Curberson-Alvarado. Her nonprofit effort began as a local festival to celebrate cultural diversity in central Tennessee, but when the infamous ICE raid happened in 2018, her group became more deeply involved, now providing legal assistance, language classes, and so much more.

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Bright Siders over Zoom audio! The Bright Siders is a unique musical collaboration between Nashville-based Americana songwriter Kristin Andreassen and Brooklyn-based child psychiatrist Kari Groff, MD. Together, they create music with the purpose of helping children connect to their emotions. Ten years in the making, their carefully crafted, star-studded debut album A Mind of Your Own arrives just when the world needs it most, and as the importance of mental health resurfaces. Releasing on January 21, 2021 via Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the album invites listeners to think deeply about empathy and self-compassion as they navigate the beauty and complexity of their emotional lives.Together with an inclusive cast of inspiring vocalists – including Ed Helms, The War & Treaty, Gaby Moreno, Punch Brothers, Joey Ryan (The Milk Carton Kids), Oh Pep!, Kaia Kater, and more – Andreassen, Dr. Groff and their co-producer, Chris Eldridge, offer a profoundly empowering collection of songs and skits for elementary age children and the grownups who love them. Kari Groff, MD is an accomplished physician running a child psychiatry practice in Brooklyn, New York. Her side passion has always been as a fiddler and songwriter. Through her clinical work as a child psychiatrist, Dr. Groff has seen first-hand how powerful music can be in helping children to process emotions. As a young doctor, she started writing her own material based on the issues brought to her by her patients, weaving psychiatric advice within her catchy lyrics.Kristin Andreassen has toured world stages as a singer, clogger, square dance caller and educator, first with the Maryland-based Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, and then with oldtime stringband Uncle Earl (Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, KC Groves) and “folk noir” trio Sometymes Why (Ruth Ungar, Aoife O’Donovan). As a songwriter, Andreassen’s achievements include the kids’ radio hit “Crayola Doesn’t Make a Color for Your Eyes”. It was a chance meeting between Andreassen and Dr. Groff that launched The Bright Siders as a shared musical endeavor. The songs and skits, along with Dr. Groff’s “Try this at home…” suggestions contained in the liner notes, are all intended to set the stage for conversations with children about common emotional themes and experiences they’re likely to have while growing up. “More than anything, we encourage parents, educators, and caregivers to listen to this music with their children. Where does the real magic of this album happen? It’s in actively listening to the music with children and then talking about what they experience in response to the music,” says Dr. Groff.“Children should understand that their feelings are valid and important to the adults around them,” she continues. “And parents can help children live rich and meaningful lives by helping them accept and understand their emotional experiences with compassion – even if they, as parents, cannot directly fix a problem that is making them anxious or sad.” With playful lyrics and contagious melodies, this music cuts through the monofocus of our pandemic-centered times, offering a practical guide to raising emotionally intelligent children who, one day soon, will take those skills with them as they experience the beauty in growing up and becoming themselves. We want to hear from you! Rhythms Editor Brian Wise talks to Sarah Jarosz, singer songwriter from Wimberley Texas, who began her music career in her early teens playing at local festivals. Sarah released 4 solo albums before teaming up with Sara Watkins (of Nickel Creek) and Aoife O’Donovan to form the trio I’m With her and release the album See You Around. They toured Australia last year. Now Sarah has just released her fifth solo album - World on The Ground - recorded in New York City by renowned producer John Leventhal. The album was released worldwide on June 5. Brian caught up with Sarah - who was in Nashville - just a week after her 29th birthday to talk about her new album. All the music in the podcast comes from World On The Ground with the exception of 'Overland' from See You Around.

Taylor Ashton! Clawhammer banjo! Illustrations! Canada! He started his career in the alt-folk band Fish & Bird and has collaborated with musical friends like Courtney Hartmann (formerly of Della Mae). Taylor's debut solo album, The Romantic, is out now and filled with sweet banjo grooves and emotional feelings. We talk about his growing up in Canada: flying solo on an airplane at a very young age. He would draw on the barf bags to impress the flight attendants, which led him to a life-long love of illustrating. We talk about moving to New York and first connecting with the massive city and then finding his people there. He connected with Courtney at a Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge show, so we get the story there. Taylor is a warm and funny person to talk to and I really enjoyed getting to spend time with him. I love his new record beyond words and really recommend you catching a live show of his sometime soon! He'll be touring with Aoife O'Donovan soon, including March 12 at Sanders Theater in Cambridge. Hope you love this one!

Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s historic 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Arkansas. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors, and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, Smithsonian Folkways artists and award winning Boston, Massachusetts progressive folk trio “Lula Wiles” recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with these bright Boston bards. Lula Wiles is a Boston based progressive folk trio consisting of Isa Burke, Eleanor Buckland, and Mali Obomsawin. Their blending of instrumental virtuosity, intricate three part harmony singing, and visionary songwriting has quickly ushered them to the forefront of modern American contemporary folk music. With the recent release of their Smithsonian Folkways album “What Will We Do,” the trio now joins the ranks of America’s most important folk artists. “Long before they were in a band together, the members of Lula Wiles were singing folk songs and trading fiddle tunes at camp in Maine. ‘All of us were lucky to have access to the folk music community at a young age,’ Burke says. “The music traditions that we’re drawing on are social, community-building traditions.” On those warm summer nights, playing music was just plain fun. But the members of Lula Wiles carry those early lessons of community and the meaning of shared art with them to this day, as they seek to create music that questions cultural virtues, soothes aching wounds, and envisions a better world. “Lula Wiles came of age in Boston, in the practice rooms of Berklee College of Music and the city’s lively roots scene. In 2016, the band self-released Lula Wiles, a sensitive, twang-tinged collection of originals. Since then, they have toured internationally, winning fans at the Newport Folk Festival and the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and sharing stages with the likes of Aoife O’Donovan, the Wood Brothers, and Tim O’Brien. “Now, the release of What Will We Do on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings places the group squarely in line with some of its deepest influences, from the protest anthems of Woody Guthrie to the trailblazing songs of Elizabeth Cotten and Hazel Dickens. (Even the band’s name is a twist on an old Carter Family song.)” - http://www.lulawiles.com/bio/ In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1983 archival recording of Ozark original fiddler, Roger Fountain, performing the traditional tune “Saint Anne’s Reel,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. In this episode, Charley speaks with environmentalist and author Richard Mason on the question “What’s Worth Keeping” from our past in the rapidly evolving culture of our present.

As fellow travelers on the acoustic and bluegrass music festival circuit, I'm With Her's Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan, were bound to make music together. Following an informal jam session, the trio got together and began to write songs, eventually releasing their debut album 'See You Around' in 2018. The band joined Scott Goldman to discuss their collaborative musicianship, the welcoming nature of the musical community they grew up in, and how that community helped them develop their own artistry in the process. All it took was an off-the-cuff show back in 2014, and the trio of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan knew they had something special. Formalizing this new union under the name I'm With Her, the three powerhouses have spent the past few years sporadically touring the group around, releasing an EP, and now they are releasing their much-anticipated debut full-length, See You Around.Built on a foundation of tradition, intimate confessionalism, and expert musicianship, See You Around owes as much to the musician's past as it seems like a logical waypoint on their journey through song. We're going in on the supergroup's debut to find out if I'm With Her has got legs or if we're going to be seeing them around for a long time to come.PLUS! Anthony da Costa is already on his way. He’s only 26 and is a graduate of Columbia University in NYC. He’s lived in NYC, Austin and now resides in Nashville. He’s been a sideman guitar slinger for Jimmy LaFave, Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz. He adds his own wonderful ethereal style to every performance and recording. Oh yeah, he’s also a phenomenal singer and songwriter. He’s currently working on a new solo record produced by Kenneth Pattengale of The Milk Carton Kids. We were lucky to get Anthony to come in to our podcast on one of his rare days off. Enjoy!

JULIAN LAGE & CHRIS ELDRIDGE first full-length album Avalon is a vivid snapshot of this duos repertoire, circa 2014; a portrait of a burgeoning friendship between two virtuosic players; and, at its heart, a pristinely recorded love letter to the sound of the acoustic guitar. Lage has, since childhood, been highly regarded in jazz and new music circles for his own work as well as for his collaborations with such artists as Gary Burton, Nels Cline, Fred Hersch, and Jim Hall, among many others. Chris Eldridge is equally noted in the progressive bluegrass world for his stints with The Seldom Scene and The Infamous Stringdusters, which led to his joining Chris Thile's adventurous, Grammy-nominated quintet, Punch Brothers. AOIFE ODONOVAN has gained wide recognition through an impressive list of projects including the captivating lead singer of the Boston-based progressive string band Crooked Still and The Goat Rodeo Sessions (with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile). The Washington Post describes her singing as “almost too gorgeous for its own good. She has made regular appearances on A Prairie Home Companion and collaborated with some of the most eminent names in music across a wide variety of genres from Alison Krauss to Dave Douglas. Her latest release is Man in The Neon Coat: Live in Cambridge. The album features live trio performances of tracks from Aoife's two critically acclaimed releases as well as covers of Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris classics. WoodSongs Kid: Beth Davis is award winning fiddle player and singer from Carbondale, Illinois. She is 12 years old.

In the Magic Hour is the name of bluegrass darling Aoife O'Donovan's new album, and also an apt description of what it felt like chatting with her on this episode of Soul Sisters. Well-known as leading vocalist in the band Crooked Still and her part in the Grammy-winning Goat Rodeo Sessions album, O'Donovan is now thriving in a solo career that finds her harnessing her immense musical talents that first revealed themselves when she knew, at the age of five, that she wanted to be a musician. Hear unusual music for string quartet on this program, as Australian composer Andrew Byrne, now based in New York, uses the string quartet as a percussion instrument in his work called “Striking.” Then, listen to Bang on a Can All-Star saxman, clarinetist and composer Ken Thomson’s work for the JACK Quartet, “THAW.” There’s also folk-informed music from the singer, songwriter and composer Aoife O Donovan as played by Brooklyn Rider. Hear string quartet music by multi-instrumentalist composer Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ, who plays a traditional Vietnamese string instrument on “Green River Delta,” in collaboration with Kronos Quartet. Plus, hear a work from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams that uses the string quartet as an ambient music ensemble, relying upon harmonics and on tones played on open strings. Today it is my pleasure to be speaking with a true Jazz legend, trumpet player, composer and record label owner, Dave Douglas. This is an occasions where I am getting to interview somebody I studied when I was in music school, somebody who in his field is a total celebrity. I was very humbled yet excited when Dave said he would like to be on the podcast. From the perspective of the business side of music I am curious to find out some of the differences between the jazz world and the commercial world. How artists are heard above the noise in a genre that requires being a master of your instrument, and the focus is entirely on the music. Dave and I talk about improvisation, music education, the perspective of time, collaborations, getting in the zone, what is success, his latest work, what’s to come in 2013, and much more. This is also the first podcast to feature a track, so be sure to check out “Be Still My Soul” off the “Be Still” album. DAVE DOUGLAS is a prolific trumpeter, composer and educator from New York City. His unique contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition some of which includes a Guggenheim Fellowship, Aaron Copland award and Grammy-nominations. Douglas has developed his work for several unique ensembles with whom he’s currently active including his quintet, electric sextet Keystone, Brass Ecstasy, Sound Prints Quintet, co-led with Joe Lovano. His new Quintet released their debut recording, Be Still, in September 2012 with singer Aoife O’Donovan, the first time Douglas has featured a vocalist on a recording. Since 2005, Douglas has operated his own record label, Greenleaf Music, releasing his own recordings, albums by other artists in the jazz idiom, and continues to prove himself as a forward-thinking leader in the realm of digital music distribution. He served as artistic director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at The Banff Centre in Canada 2002 through 2012 and is co-founder and director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2013.
