During World War II, a country house in Buckinghamshire hosted some of the UK's top minds as they worked to crack enemy communications, most famously the German Enigma cipher. It is estimated that breakthroughs at Bletchley Park shortened the conflict by at least two years, saving over 14 million lives. But why was Bletchley Park chosen, and what was life like there during the war? Who were the brilliant scientists working tirelessly behind its walls? And when did the veil finally lift on the shadowy world of wartime intelligence? This is a Short History Of Bletchley Park. A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins. For this episode we're joined by the immensely respected Alexis Petridis, The Guardian's principal pop critic since September 2001. Our guest tells us about his childhood in Yorkshire, his teenage years in Buckinghamshire and his initiation into the Acid House scene while at Cambridge University. Work experience at MixMag in the mid-'90s led to his becoming that dance/clubbing monthly's Features Editor – and then to a slightly less felicitous eight months as editor of Select. A short digression on "Britpop nostalgia" leads us to discussion of the changing role of music journalism and to our guest's near-quarter-century tenure at "the Graun". Jasper quizzes him about his encounters with Daft Punk and we bring matters up to date by discussing the fabulous Irish singer CMAT, whom Alexis interviewed this summer. The episode concludes after Mark introduces clips from Mat Snow's 1992 audio interview with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS, 50 years after the double album Alive! made them a '70s rock phenomenon. Many thanks to special guest Alexis Petridis. Find his writing in the pages of the Guardian. There are churches all over the world. Our task is done.2. There are too many needs around us. 3. Mission is everything we do. (Everyone is a missionary.)4. We should just send money to local evangelists, who are more effective.5. Mission is 'West to the Rest' (a neo-colonial endeavour).6. Missionaries are super-spiritual - and I'm not.7. Missionaries are super-gifted - and I'm not.8. Missionaries receive a special call from God.9. Missionaries have to give up their careers to go.10. Missionaries live in mud huts. At a former military base, Dr Ian Coxhill, chief engineer at Nammo UK, shows us around the workshops where propulsion systems are made for space agencies and commercial operators. Ian demonstrates how to recreate the conditions of space at ground level, reflects on the art of engineering, and offers evidence to suggest robots aren't going to replace humans yet. The world's first model village, Bekonscot in Buckinghamshire, had its initial public open day on 4th August, 1929. Begun as a personal project of accountant Roland Callingham, the attraction continues to capture the hearts of visitors with its intricate details and nostalgic charm. Callingham, a model railway enthusiast, created Bekonscot in his back garden; constructing an entire town to serve his model trains, featuring multiple stations, a butcher, baker, and circus big top. Initially created for private enjoyment, it was officially opened to the public by Princess Elizabeth in 1934, and was modified during World War II to feature tiny air raid wardens and wartime street scenes. Since the 90s, it has been architecturally preserved in its 1930s heyday. This episode first aired in 2024 Love the show? Support us!  Join

If you've ever looked around and thought, “How did it get this bad?” you're not alone. The toys, the dishes, the laundry, the mental to-do list that never stops. This episode is for the mums who are just plain overwhelmed and need permission to stop trying to do it all. I sat down with Annie from Declutter with Delight to talk about what really happens when you let go of the guilt, the pressure, and the piles, and start creating a home that supports your real life, not your Pinterest board. We're digging into: Why motherhood during COVID sent Annie into stuff overload, and how it led her to decluttering for mental survival How being a former teacher helps her create routines and systems that actually stick The myth that “you should just be able to manage” and why it keeps so many women stuck What changed when she stopped obsessing over how things looked and focused on how things worked Why involving kids early makes decluttering easier, not harder Annie's go-to method for overwhelmed clients: start with bins, skip the sentimental The magic of a 10-minute tidy when everything has a place, and how to get there The real cost of clutter: overwhelm, overstimulation, and constant decision fatigue A powerful client story that started with one overwhelmed mum and ended with a complete mindset shift Her advice to anyone who feels ashamed to ask for help, and why it's actually a strength This one's for the mums carrying it all, physically, mentally, emotionally, and wondering if they're just not cut out for this. Tackling the myriad of garden challenges 'on a site-by-site basis' - with National Trust's Sheila Das

Six months into her role as head of parks and gardens at the National Trust Sheila Das speaks to HortWeek's Rachael Forsyth about the Trust's new strategy and how it is taking a step back to re-evaluate its approach to planting, the “scarcity and abundance” of water, climate change, outreach, education, going peat-free and more.Speaking on changes at Cliveden in Buckinghamshire – where The Long Garden redesign focussed on long-term resilience, moving away from bedding being changed twice a year – Das explains that the Trust won't “eradicate” the presence of bedding but it might be done slightly differently. They will also evaluate where the plants come from, how they're grown, the resources required to grow them, and the financial cost.Climate change is being felt within gardens across the UK and Das said each garden within the National Trust will have to work to understand its own individual challenges, which will be done through workshops. On the specific challenge of water – both scarcity and abundance – Das says it's important to be “mindful of the pressures we're putting on our local environment through having a garden.” A particular challenge the National Trust has, she says, is that certain sites are working to create an atmosphere and a particular type of plant might be doing that that isn't going to work in the future climate. Working out how to keep the spirit going, cherishing the site's heritage, without depleting natural resources is going to mean “delicate decisions” balancing being “a good descendent as well as a good ancestor”. The National Trust is 100% peat free in its gardens, but Das says “there's no denying it's a challenge” with gardeners unable to get all of the species they would like. She adds that the range and diversity of plants feels “fragile”. Suppliers are doing “a really good job” Das says, they just might not be able to move as quickly as everyone wants. National Trust, in common with gardens and attractions across the UK, faces the challenge of falling visitor numbers and she addresses the various causes of this and outlines how the Trust's new strategy is looking at ways to “end unequal access” and “inspire millions of people”. Since October 2020, Soumya Dinesh has been Managing Director and Co-Founder of Atula Technologies – a Buckinghamshire based business specialising in bespoke software solutions for SMEs. Soumya grew up in the cantonment city of Bengaluru, India and excelled academically. She originally wanted to become a pilot but did not pursue this, instead opting to go to Pondicherry University where she got a master's degree in finance. This enabled Soumya to go on to work with one of the biggest accounting firms in the world.Despite an enjoyable and enriching stint there, she learnt it was not what she wanted to do, surprising many by taking the reins of an at-home flower delivery company based around her parent's flower shop when she was in her early 20s. It was here that Soumya got her first taste of e-commerce, which would later become the foundations of Atula Technologies. “It led to tremendous growth for the florist shop, which was once a single unit on one high street. We were the most well-known florist in India for several years after that because we could deliver across the country with our branding.” The florist business was later sold, Soumya married Dinesh and moved to the UK. She then retrained in IT and worked for Lloyd's TSB and SONY Corporation. At the same time, Soumya decided to start creating her own chocolates, which gradually spiralled into her own business. Her company Cherish Chocolates earned several Great Taste awards and was sold up and down the country but was eventually wound down after 10 years when she decided to focus on family.Several years later, Soumya launched Atula Technologies with Dinesh, bringing their IT knowledge and experience together. Now in its fourth year, Soumya says it is “onward and upward” with plans for growth and success for herself and her clients. “I have a lot to offer and so much to give back.” https://www.linkedin.com/in/soumyadinesh/www.atulatech.com

Join us on The Explaining History Podcast as we welcome Dame Vikki Heywood, former Executive Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court Theatre, to discuss her dazzling debut novel Miss Veal and Miss Ham. Set against the sleepy veneer of a 1951 Buckinghamshire village post office, this intimate tale reveals the hidden passions and unspoken resilience of two women whose lives span from the suffragette movement to the aftermath of World War II.In this episode, we explore:A Day of Reckoning: How one pivotal day in 1951 cracks open Miss Dora Ham and Miss Beatrix Veal's carefully maintained spinster façade—and what it tells us about post-war Britain.Through Beatrix's Eyes: The wry, poignant narrative voice that illuminates the challenges of love that “cannot be spoken,” and the heart-breaking decisions forced by changing times.Echoes of Literary Greats: Why fans of Barbara Pym and Sarah Waters will be drawn to Heywood's rich tapestry of gay underground clubs, wartime Blitz life, and the shifting landscape of women's work after the war.Hidden Lives, Lasting Love: What inspired Heywood to tell a four-decade story of clandestine romance, and how her own career in the arts informed this deeply human portrait.Whether you're intrigued by post-war social history, the evolution of LGBTQ+ narratives, or the behind-the-scenes world of theatre leadership, this conversation shines a light on love, loss, and the unbreakable dignity of lives lived in the shadows. Don't be shy, send me a message!Thomas Felix Creighton talks to Oxford historian Dr. Steven Parissien about his forthcoming book, ‘Another Round – A Post-War History of Britain in 12 Strong Drinks' from publisher August Books. We talk about class, age, gender, as factors in British ‘drinking culture', as well as the UK's ever changing international outlook, and the effect of marketing, in shaping our trends in drinking. We even talk about the rise of zero alcohol drinks in Britain. So, raise a glass to the Great British tradition of booze, and the twelve drinks that made it what it is today… Cheers! The history of Britain, perhaps more so than any other country, is defined by its drinking culture. Built on a foundation of pubs, clubs and watering holes, the UK has remained in the global top five for alcoholic intake per capita since 1700. It doesn't matter how it comes – nip, schooner, pint or yard – we will always gladly have another. But of such a vast and varied drinks menu, which are Britain's favourites? Which have stood the test of time? And what do they say about our wider culture?Steven Parissien's 'Another Round?' uncorks contemporary Britain's relationship with booze in twelve very different drinks. From the 1950's classic Babysham, to the house party favourite WKD, these flagship brands reflected and redefined British culture and politics. This book publishes in the UK on 11th September, 2025. You can pre-order on Amazon (and all good sellers), and it will be available in Hardcover (£14.99), Paperback (£9.99), and eFormats (£9.99) on the day of release. Thomas has read an advance copy of this book, and strongly recommends it.Dr Steven Parissien is Director of Compton Verney museum and gallery in Warwickshire, England, and Visiting Fellow at Kellogg College, University of Oxford, and the University of Warwick. Born in London and raised in Buckinghamshire, Steven obtained both his undergraduate and doctoral degrees from Oxford. Steven has written extensively on architectural and cultural history. His nine books to date include Adam Style (Phaidon, 1992; Apollo magazine's Book of the Year for 1992 and The American Institute of Architects' Book of the Year Choice for 1993), George IV: The Grand Entertainment (John Murray, 2001); Interiors: The Home Since 1700 (Laurence King, 2008); and, most recently, The Life of the Automobile (Atlantic, 2013). On June 6, 1991, Penny Bell, a 43-year-old businesswoman and mother of two, was brutally stabbed over 50 times in her Jaguar in the busy Gurnell Leisure Center parking lot in Greenford, London, in a frenzied attack that left no witnesses despite the public setting. Penny, a happy and successful director at a recruitment agency, lived in an affluent Buckinghamshire neighborhood with her husband, Alistair, and their children, Matthew and Lauren. That morning, she left home for an unspecified 9:50 a.m. appointment, mentioning it to builders renovating her home, but no record of it was found. Three days prior, she withdrew £8,500 from a joint account, an unusual act possibly linked to her murder. Witnesses reported seeing a man enter a blue Jaguar, a slow-moving Jaguar with hazard lights, and Penny mouthing “Help me” with a passenger, but no one intervened. The investigation, which interviewed over 8,000 people, was hampered by compromised forensic evidence and no clear motive, though the attack's savagery suggested Penny knew her killer. Suspects like Alistair, a former neighbor, John Richmond, and serial killer Robert Napper were cleared. In 2021, Penny's daughter, Lauren, who was nine at the time and has no memories of her mother, renewed efforts with a £20,000 reward and media campaigns, believing the killer was motivated by personal rage. The case remains unsolved, leaving Lauren to honor her mother's vibrant legacy by naming her daughter Penny.   Sources: McMahon, J., & McMahon, J. (2024, August 9). For this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined by academic, storyteller, author, and bona fide expert in Buckinghamshire's folklore, Dr Terrie “Red Phoenix” Howie.Terrie, who performs as “Red Phoenix” when she's leading workshops or telling stories, would be an absolutely worthwhile guest for this episode just from a storytelling perspective. She has performed all over the country as well as internationally, and has been a professional storyteller for over 25 years. However, as you will hear during our conversation, Terrie has made two additional, really important contributions to the modern folklore landscape. The two are interrelated, and both are very interesting. The first is her PhD research, which set out to prove the impacts storytelling has on people. Because, as we can all probably say, and many of the people we've interviewed for Local Legends have attested to this, there's no doubt that storytelling has power – for adult audiences, not just for children – and Terrie has gone out of her way, at personal cost, to prove as much. The second, which, as she explains, came sort of hand in glove with the PhD, was that she set about collecting, for the first time ever, a proper corpus of folklore and folktales from Buckinghamshire, and her book, Buckinghamshire Folk Tales, is just one of the products of all of that work.As such, settle in for a deep and fascinating conversation which ranges from dragons to demon summonings, bull riding Anglo Saxons to vampires, and engages with really big ideas - not least how each of us creates an identity through telling our stories of ourselves. We really hope that you enjoy it, and will be back on Monday with our brand new County Episode, in which we will be lolloping through the history and folklore of Leicestershire!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode of Three Ravens, we are chatting all about the history and folklore of Buckinghamshire, a county once believed - completely wrongly - to have very few folktales... We start off chatting about St Patrick's Day, discussing his weird life amongst pirates and of generally annoying people, all before he became Patron Saint of Ireland, after which we bounce on over to Buckinghamshire! After discussing how this week's Local Legends guest Dr Terrie Howie changed the game in terms of how people view the legends of the area, we start to delve into some strange facets of the county's history, including how Alan Turing and the codebreakers of Bletchley Park were haunted by a caffeine-hungry spectre, the strange and sinister doings of The Hellfire Club, and Buckinghamshire's very own dragon story. Then Martin not just double or triple carbs it, but presents the possibility of a four carbohydrate County Dish, while also getting quite alliterative...Next, we chew over some folklore, including one of the first UFO reports in British history, which occurred in Buckinghamshire, relay the details of some of the county's rather annoying, hedge-jumping fae beings, tell the tale of a spooky Green Man/ghost/Bishop hybrid, and throw a bone to the Black Beast of Aylesbury - all enhanced by some excerpts from Saturday's full Local Legends interview with Terrie. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's story "Cassian, The Vampire of Milton Keynes," in which the good folk of Buckinghamshire work together to show the divine power of a well written letter...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and will be back on Thursday with a new Forgotten Melodies bonus episode about Sea Shanties, all before the full interview with Terrie comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Pesticides are killing plants, insects and animals that they're not aiming to control, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and the University of Sussex have joined international researchers to analyse 1,700 lab and field studies of 471 insecticides, herbicides and fungicides used in agriculture or commercially around the world. Their report identifies 'wide ranging negative effects' on a range of species and while the authors acknowledge that without pesticides global food production would likely collapse, they conclude that these chemicals are a major contributor to the biodiversity crisis. A tractor protest disrupted the Prime Minister's visit to a building site in Buckinghamshire. Farmers campaigning against the reintroduction of inheritance tax on farms took their tractors to the site near Milton Keynes yesterday, sounding their horns, Sir Keir Starmer then abandoned plans to make a speech. Speaking afterwards, he said the protest highlighted the difficult choices the Government had to make. This week we have been featuring rural champions, unsung heroes making a difference to the lives of people in rural communities. Barkley Thompson, from a farming family in Co Antrim, is a music teacher at Ballymena Academy and it's there of an evening that as musical director, he gathers some 60 or so men and women from the surrounding community under the banner of The Farmers' Choir of Northern Ireland. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

(No, not that Hellfire Club.) The Loremen return for series 6 and it's a saucy start to the year. We travel to the county of Buckinghamshire to meet some rich and powerful men who are behaving disgracefully — what a twist! William Hogarth, Sir Francis Dashwood and The Notorious John Booth set up a secret drinking society in the 18th century. The first rule of the Hellfire Club was that you had to have been to Italy, and the second rule was that you had to be drunk. (A bar for entry that has been pretty much smashed by low-cost airlines and duty free.) From cavorting in monasteries to tangling with Satan himself, these utter legends lived by the motto, "Do what thou will!"
