Welcome to the Peaks Island Radio podcast, where I talk with islanders and people of interest to the island about arts, culture, current events, and more. In this episode, I speak with Adrian Sutherland, an Indigenous Roots Rocker from Attawapiskat. I discovered Adrian's latest album, Precious Diamonds, on Bandcamp and was immediately captivated by its freshness and depth of feeling. As his website says: "One listen to Adrian Sutherland and you'll know he's unlike anyone else...he melds rock, roots, folk and blues, drawing inspiration from his life, the land, and his language and culture. Adrian's sophomore solo album Precious Diamonds was recorded in Nashville with former GRAMMY winner Colin Linden, and released in 2024. It won Best Americana Album from the 2025 World Entertainment Awards in Los Angeles, is nominated at the 2025 JUNO Awards, and was selected one of the “Top 100 Albums of 2024” by CKUA Radio. It features two songs in Cree, making the first time Adrian is making music in his first language. Lead single Notawe (Father) reached #1 on the internationally recognized Indigenous Music Countdown, and was named one of the “Top 100 Songs of 2023” by CBC Music. Adrian is presently writing a book for Penguin Random House Canada about his extraordinary life in the North. One of the only professional recording artists who lives in a remote fly-in First Nation, he carries authentic and insightful first-hand perspective on many important issues. During this time of reconciliation, Adrian is hopeful for Canadians to walk together in love and respect.Adrian and I cover a lot of ground in this conversation, touching on his rise in music along with the challenges he faced, what it is like to live on his ancestral lands while also having a recording career, and the many social issues Adrian is passionate about. With his repertoire of musical styles and skillfully-crafted lyrics, his songs have been covered by diverse artists such as Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, Judy Collins, The Barenaked Ladies, Jimmy Buffett and K.D Lang. In this episode, I go deep with Bruce as we chat about his early beginnings, his time at Berklee College of Music in Boston, the inspiration behind some of his most memorable songs (Wondering Where the Lions Are, If I had a Rocket Launcher, The Mines of Mozambique), and we chat about his memoir Rumours of Glory. Whilst navigating his entire career, we explore his in-studio relationships with producers Colin Linden, Eugene Martynec, Jon Goldsmith and T-Bone Burnett. After chatting about Bruce's wonderful last album, O SUN O MOON, which also features a co-written song with Susan Aglukark about the growing threat of global warming (To Keep the World We Know), our conversation wraps up with Bruce saying that "if God shows up I hope I will recognize him." This is Episode 424 of Georgian Bay Roots Radio, hosted by Lloyd Lemon that was released on December 1, 2024. Episode 424 is sponsored by The Georgian Bay Folk Society. In this episode Lloyd presents his interview with Terra Lightfoot as recorded at the Sharing Circle on Saturday morning, August 17, 2024. The interview is accompanied by music discussed by Terra (I finally get a chance to play some David Wilcox (one of Terra's early influences). Terra talks about some of her musical roots, her relationships with mentors like Colin Linden and Daniel Lanois, playing on tour with Blue Rodeo, Bruce Cockburn, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and some of the artists she has co-written with -including Matt Anderson, Colin Linden, Colin James, and Tyler Chester. Terra also graced us with two acoustic performances of new songs: L A Good Sign and and Could've Stayed Lost that she has already recorded and are planned to be released in February. We had some technical challenges with the field recording, but you can hear Terra's talent, passion and spirit shine through (even if it does not duplicate the amazing experience of sitting beside her while she sang and played). #summerfolk #podcast #georgianbayroots #georgianbayrootsradio #Summerfolk49 #terralightfoot #interview #davidwilcox #samweber
Hi everybody, welcome to another episode of The Talk Music Podcast!I'm thrilled to announce my guest is LES STROUD! Best known as the producer, creator and star of the hit TV series SURVIVORMAN, Les is also an accomplished musician/songwriter. His music is a rich tapestry of rock, world, prog rock, folk and blues, and it reflects his deep connection to nature. Steve Vai, Bruce Cockburn, Colin Linden and Slash have all lent Les their musical talents for his recordings. Les has guested on stage with Journey, Alice Cooper, Blues Traveler, Steven Stills, Chicago, Randy Bachman, Tommy Shaw, James Cotton, Dave Mason and Slash (who's latest solo album Les performs on). Les has always operated in two lanes: his Survivorman and music careers, the latter being his most recent focus. His latest album MOTHER EARTH, produced by MIKE CLINK (“Appetite for Destruction” by Guns N' Roses), blew me away. Some song clips are sprinkled throughout. I loved chatting with Les about his beginnings, both our experiences at Fanshawe college, his remarkable journey as a survival expert, and of course his lifelong passion for using music to express his love for our planet. This in-depth chat took place the day after I saw Les perform as a guest on harp at a truly magical Bruce Cockburn concert. Afterwards, surrounded by nature at his well-hidden cottage, we enjoyed a hot sauna, cold beer and a quick dip in the lake. A blissful time I will always remember. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. We're re-running our favorite episodes from The Business of You archives. If you missed it the first time, or just want to listen again, check this one out! In Part 2 of my conversation with Jonathan Jackson, we dive deeper into his faith and passion for creative storytelling. If acting, music and writing were all about entertaining people, Jonathan would have left the industry behind a long time ago. Instead, he uses multiple creative channels to weave authentic stories of redemption, grace and humanity for others - through song, spoken and written word. While Jonathan still acts, he primarily builds his influence on the foundation of storytelling in every form it takes, with poetry and music taking center stage. Jonathan recently released a new book called The Harrowing of Hell: An Epic Poem exploring what happened between Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. To Jonathan, it is the story of the Hero of Heroes. He has also authored other books including a work of Mystical Poetry entitled “Book of Solace and Madness” and the non-fiction prose “The Mystery of Art”, which has been translated into multiple languages. His band Enation has performed alongside artists such as Echo & The Bunnymen, Sarah McLachlan, Echosmith, and more. Their newest album, Ultraviolet Empire, was released in the fall of 2020 and was co-produced by GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Colin Linden. Jonathan Jackson is a five-time EMMY® Award-winning actor and Critics' Choice Award nominee who has starred in numerous TV and films, including ABC/CMT's hit drama “Nashville” (2012–2018), “General Hospital” (1993–1999, 2009–2011, 2015), “Tuck Everlasting” (2002), “The Deep End Of The Ocean” (1999), “Insomnia” (2002) and “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” (2004). He also appeared in episodes of “One Tree Hill”, “Boy Meets World”, “The Twilight Zone” and “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.” Trust the timing Jonathan Jackson is a believer in divine timing. Rather than many business strategists who will tell you that there is a “right” or “wrong” time to put your work out into the world, Jonathan recommends that we as entrepreneurs turn inwards. Do you feel like the work is done - and is the world actually ready for it? Do the conditions feel right to you? Jonathan has multiple albums, several books and even some screenplays that await the right conditions. They are in various stays of completion, but they all have one thing in common - it's not the right time yet. In this episode, Jonathan serves us a welcome reminder that much of life and business is about timing. Don't be afraid to explore your interests If you're someone with varying interests, it can be easy to cave in to others' advice to just choose one focus. But Jonathan Jackson gives us his honest advice: Don't. In his young adulthood, Jonathan was an actor while he sought to learn songwriting, screenwriting and more. He never lost sight of his own passions and followed every thread as far as he could, creating new spaces for his own exploration. The results have been incredible. With his most recent book he released an original score of music and occasionally hosts live performances honoring the work. SImilarly, he believes that we can all weave our passions together when the timing is right. Rather than seeing our interests as boxes we have to fit into, he encourages us to stay open minded and see the broader picture. Your interests may seem disparate now, but how could they be woven together in new and innovative ways? Those are the questions worth asking in life. Soundbytes 4:53 - 5:26 “I look at art and poetry and storytelling as all one reality. To me Christ is the great storyteller. He is the eternal poet, the master of story. You can't get a greater story than the story of Christ. The beauty, tragedy and triumph.” 7:59 - 8:17 “I don't feel like every project has to be overtly religious in any way, shape or form to be beautiful. I just want it to have some kind of meaning. Some kind of honesty about the human condition.” Quotes “I had these deep experiences with Christ. To be, theology is beauty, and poetry. It's not about a religion, it's about life.” “When I'm looking at music, storytelling or films, I can't see the world outside of the beauty and challenging reality of Christ.” “Orthodoxy has helped me to see the whole world as a sacrament.” “When I was younger I was looking at it like acting was the central focus of my income. But I saw the writing on the wall a long time ago, that that was not going to be enough for my soul. Developing my writing and music was a way of engaging with the world in these other ways.” “There is a strange kind of tension between the flurry of inspiration, creating things, and waiting. We have four albums we've created and not released yet, because we're waiting for the right time. I have a handful of books that have been written and screenplays - we don't know what we're doing, really. There is intentionality and prayer and vision, but we're trying to be flexible.” “As a writer, I want to live in it for a while, go away from it and come back. Again and again. It's a testing thing, a maturation process with a particular work. My lived experience finally matches the intention of the work.” “I've learned over the years that the music and the story is about connecting with someone's soul and heart. That's the stuff I care about.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit Jonathan Jackson's Website at https://www.jonathanjackson.com/ Find Jonathan on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JonathanJacksonHQ/ Follow Jonathan on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jonathanjacksonhq/ Subscribe to Jonathan Jackson's Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4KKxEIbF5kAGOSi26Nx3Bg
We're re-running our favorite episodes from The Business of You archives. If you missed it the first time, or just want to listen again, check this one out! Jonathan Jackson was a child actor in the 1990's and early 2000's. But since then, he has become a powerful artist, musician and creator. Now on The Business of You, Jonathan is sharing his unique story - including his journey to faith, fame and personal growth. Jonathan Jackson is a multi-faceted artist who creates meaningful art pieces through music, film, and the written word. He is a five-time EMMY® Award-winning actor and Critics' Choice Award nominee who has starred in numerous TV and films, including ABC/CMT's hit drama “Nashville” (2012–2018), “General Hospital” (1993–1999, 2009–2011, 2015), “Tuck Everlasting” (2002), “The Deep End Of The Ocean” (1999), “Insomnia” (2002) and “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” (2004). He also appeared in episodes of “One Tree Hill”, “Boy Meets World”, “The Twilight Zone” and “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.” His indie band Enation has performed alongside artists across the musical spectrum, including post-punk legends Echo & The Bunnymen, the iconic Sarah McLachlan, Echosmith, and more. Their new album, Ultraviolet Empire, was released in the fall of 2020 and was co-produced by GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Colin Linden. Jonathan is also a published Author. His current books include a work of Mystical Poetry entitled “Book of Solace and Madness” and the non-fiction prose “The Mystery of Art”, which has been translated into multiple languages. Jonathan resides in Ireland with his wife, Elisa, and their three children. He enjoys Greek coffee, good wine, and music. Navigating fame at an early age At just 11 years old, Jonathan left his idyllic childhood in Washington State to work as a child actor in California. Starring in “General Hospital”, he gained notoriety as a soap opera star and quickly began to book other roles. Working in television and movies, Jonathan had a workload that exceeded that of most grown adults. He knew that if he did not anchor himself in his relationship with God and his connections to his family, he would be swept away. With wisdom beyond his years, Jonathan turned to creative self-expression to set himself free. He collaborated with his brother Richard to compose original music, learn new instruments and write screenplays. Laughing, he explains that he had to begin writing because many of the ones he read were not very good. Rather than fall victim to the clutches of a dark industry, Jonathan used music and writing to guide himself towards the light. It became the foundation for his life's work. Creativity is a divine gift Self-expression became the basis on which Jonathan connected with others and with his higher power. Channeling his gifts into music and written words, Jonathan became a known artist and musician with his band, Enation. Since the band's inception in 2003, they have toured periodically and continued to produce new work. Jonathan is the band's frontman, writing most of the songs in addition to singing, playing guitar, and playing the piano. While navigating fame and building a career as a musician, Jonathan was also on another personal growth journey - his quest to deepen and explore his faith. For more of Jonathan's story, be sure to tune in next week for Part II of Jonathan's story here on The Business of You! Soundbytes 11:49 - 12:20 “Writing began very early on. Richard, my brother, is 3 years older than me. My brother and I started writing our first screenplay when he was 15 and I was 12. The inspiration was that some of the scripts we were reading weren't very good. We had this feeling early on - like, we can't just sit around and wait for good projects to come our way.” 12:29 - 12:57 “I started writing songs at 11 or 12, at the same time I started acting. It was a way of keeping me sane, and it was a therapeutic thing. At that age it's just a hobby. It turned into starting a band in our late teens!” 15:28 - 16:23 “One of the things acting gave me at a young age - and there's been a lot of studies about the brain and neuroplasticity - that can happen. When you put yourself in certain situations. People looked into it, the neuroplasticity of the brain changes for actors when you play other characters and perform things. It opened me up to the world. At a very young age I had to think and feel, asking so many questions about how others see the world - and what their fears and desires might be. Human psychology became part of my world at a young age.” Quotes “I'm more of an introvert, definitely. I'm fascinated by the introvert/extrovert dynamic. I'm not sure how much is nature versus nurture. I was extroverted as a child and became more introverted when I started acting. I do love people, communicating and connecting one on one.” “Too much attention, positive or negative, is kind of negative. It's going to kind of attack your ego and put you in a false reality. And if you have too much criticism and judgment, you're potentially in extremes when you have any kind of spotlight. Searching for an equilibrium was my main focus throughout my teenage years. How do I remain sane through all that?” “I glimpsed where my life could go if I wasn't careful. A massive wave could pick me up and destroy me, if I didn't position myself carefully. I thought, I need to anchor myself.” “My brother was my closest friend, growing up. I was grateful that we had each other to walk through the madness of LA and the industry together.” “I was slowly, slowly feeling like something central was missing in my experiences in Protestant churches. Wonderful people most of the time, good intentions. But something about the church itself, I just didn't understand it. There were so many versions. You start looking around and think, this is very confusing. The sense of something missing was not connected to Christ Himself, it was the vagueness of the church.” “The modern question is, what do I believe? It sounds like an important question. But the real question if you have any approximation to Christ is, what do Christians believe, and what have they always believed?” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit Jonathan Jackson's Website at https://www.jonathanjackson.com/ Find Jonathan on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JonathanJacksonHQ/ Follow Jonathan on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jonathanjacksonhq/ Subscribe to Jonathan Jackson's Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4KKxEIbF5kAGOSi26Nx3Bg
Colin's 21st album is called Chasing the Sun. Today, Aug 17 is his Birthday. Happy Day Colin Co-produced by Colin Linden in his Pinhead Studios in Nashville. Colin's coming to the Mulligan Stew Podcast with the complete story of how he and his friends wrote and created these outstanding songs. Colin singing a Lucinda Williams song, Protection, with Lucinda in the studio doing harmony. Two tracks with blues harp legend Charlie Musselwhite, co-writing memorable songs with Tom Wilson, Terra Lightfoot, Thompson Wilson, Jesse Obrien and others. A great rhythm section of Darryl Jones (Stones) Charley Drayton (Keith Richards). A splendid cover of Paul Butterfield's classic In My Own Dream. Also vocals by The McCrary Sisters and Ruby Amanfu Colin Linden leading the all-star band and co-writing with Colin James. It's their 6th album together. Colin and I have been doing interviews for a long time but there are still events and moments in his life that need retelling. For example, when the two Colins' met on the Canadian Prairies Colin James was 13 and Colin Linden was 17. Both were into playing the blues. A short time later Colin, still a teenager, got to play for Stevie Ray Vaughn. Stevie helped him take the next steps in his career. This is the complete Interview. His 2021 album Open Road won the JUNO Award for Best Blues Album and was nominated for Blues Foundation Best Blues Rock Album in 2023. Catching the Sun may very well get the best reception yet.

Adrian is a Traditional Knowledge Keeper for the James Bay Cree of Attawapiskat First Nation. It may explain why he is such a fine songwriter and storyteller. As a singer, he's been described by producer Colin Linden as "open" sonically and spiritually. Adrian and Colin worked together on his first album When the Magic Hits. Although "together" doesn't quite describe their situation. Colin was in his home studio in Nashville and Adrian was in the frozen Far North in James Bay working in an old shipping container that he had turned into a studio. For Precious Diamonds, Adrian went south to Colin's studio in Nashville and the resulting album is now out, many months later. Adrian takes us through a number of songs he wrote and sung. His battle finding his place in the music world. His pride in recording two songs in his native Mushkegowuk Cree. As a surprise to Adrian, I had Colin Linden in the Zoom waiting room and he popped out at just the right time to congratulate his friend. Adrian brought many stories and spoke his truth.

Quotes “I had these deep experiences with Christ.
Quotes “I'm more of an introvert, definitely.

The music, produced by Sean McConnell, invokes themes painted by the duo's powerfully authentic lyrics and hypnotic harmonies. Clare, the charismatic actress who played Scarlett O'Connor in the popular show Nashville, is known as a ray of sunshine around the world. She is an empath who leads with her heart, able to communicate and translate emotions whether on stage or screen. Born in rural Australia, she moved to Music City in 2012 for the Nashville role and immediately earned respect from the city's musical leaders. She has performed with artists such as Vince Gill, Zac Brown Band, working with Grammy Award winning producers/songwriters T-Bone Burnett, Colin Linden and Buddy Miller, who became her mentors. She toured her eponymous album for sold-out crowds with Brandon in Germany, Australia, the US and UK. The pair also earned a coveted spot on Sugarland's popular “Still the Same Tour” and toured live with the Nashville cast, selling out London's O2 Arena. In 2000, he moved from Enfield, CT, to Nashville, where he taught himself to play guitar. He worked as a courier during the day and spent his nights filling empty composition books with song after song. He spent a decade touring with music legend John Hiatt, first as percussionist and background vocalist and eventually becoming one third of The John Hiatt Trio. He worked on three of the famed artist's albums, the last of which was nominated for a Grammy in the Americana category. Young was also invited by John Carter Cash to finish one of his father's unpublished works for Johnny Cash Forever Words. Brandon's music has been heard in shows such as Shameless. A Million Little Things, and Nashville. It was serendipity that brought Bowen Young together in 2013, when Brandon was a last-minute replacement for Clare's no-show duet partner for her first solo set at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. They immediately discovered they had wonderful chemistry both onstage and off. Brandon proposed to Clare at the Ryman Auditorium during the couple's Grand Ole Opry set in 2015. We had the pleasure of interviewing BOWEN * YOUNG LIVE from The Twisted Wool Lounge at the Historic Woolworth Theatre in Nashville! Most partners, in theory, will promise the world to keep each other safe and sound, but rarely is their vow necessary in everyday practice. However, when husband and wife duo BOWEN * YOUNG—singer/songwriters Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young—found themselves in the midst of a terrifying home invasion, the pair stared down the prospect of being separated, or worse, during a very real situation. Just two days later, without sleep and lacking creativity, BOWEN * YOUNG sat down with their friend and producer Sean McConnell and shared what they'd just been through. After several hours, the glimmer of an idea took hold of Bowen, just as McConnell picked up a guitar and said, “What if it goes a little something like this?” In less than an hour, the chilling story had been shaped into a song, and “Dangerous Love” was born. “Somewhere, deep in the conversation, Clare offered up an idea that was perfectly beautiful in the moment, revolving around the most harrowing part of the whole event,” remembers Young. “...The prospect of one of us being taken away from the other, just because one cruel individual decided it should be so.”The end result is a beautifully dark love song; an ode to just how far true-lovers are willing to go for each other. “Each time we play it is cathartic and healing,” says Young. “Each time we play it we love each other a little bit more. This event was just one part of our story, but it affected us deeply, and the trauma therapy we've done to recover has been one of the best gifts we could have given ourselves and each other. We can't undo what was done to us, but we can, through spreading awareness of how important it is to take care of your mental health, strive to turn that individual's cruelty into another person's healing.”More About BOWEN * YOUNG: Bowen Young's timeless debut record created by Clare Bowen and husband Brandon Robert Young is a multi-sensory feast. Opportunities don't come from playing it safe or waiting until you become perfect and everything is right. Sometimes you have to trust it, do your absolute best, believe in yourself, bring the best work forward, and see what happens.Sometimes, the things that we think are perfect don't always turn out to be great. Sometimes, it's the gig, job, or song that you see as not ideal or unappealing that is going to push you to do the next level or the best work of your life.Great opportunities don't usually come dressed as you expect them to be, and no matter how appealing or unappealing an opportunity looks, you will never know where it can lead you until you say yes to it. Saying yes to an opportunity and giving it your best is where the magic happens. Judging opportunities and thinking of them as less than ideal is an excuse for not giving your best effort.Stop worrying about making everything perfect, and start giving your best to every opportunity. Any opportunity is great if you believe in yourself and give it the best shot.To thrive, you must be willing to take risks and be open to doing the best work you can. The worst thing you can do is shy away from a great opportunity because it doesn't seem like the perfect one. Just go for it and see what happens. You might end up having the most incredible time; if not, you will learn from it, and either way, it was worth the effort. In this episode, Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young, a husband-and-wife duo singing group, talk about how to build your career, set boundaries, and succeed as an artist and entrepreneur. “Empathy and compassion are big, and you have to hold on to them as an artist.”Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:[03:47] Clare and Brandon share how they became a great singing duo and, more importantly, husband and wife.[11:22] How to stop playing it safe and stepping out even when you feel it's not your ideal gig or perfect timing[15:30] What led Clare to be called for the nationals despite being shy, introverted, and coming from a small town in Australia and her experience? [19:06] Clare and Brandon's favorite and most memorable performances. [23:54] The superpowers that have helped Clare and Brandon navigate and achieve success in their career. [28:44] How do Clare and Brandon build and maintain their fan base to be successful in what they do?[38:02] How do Clare and Brandon navigate the business and creative side of their day-to-day career?[46:44] What does working from your happy place mean to Clare and Brandon?[50:20] Clare and Brandon's advice to young people starting out their career in arts and anyone who is setting out to do something greater than themselves.[57:39] The importance of rising beyond expectations and being kind to yourself. How to be yourself and recognize your uniqueness and what makes you special. About Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young - With haunting and ethereal songs that masterfully delve into the depths of ferocious love, heartbreaking loss, and steadfast hope, the debut album, Dangerous Love, by new duo Bowen Young unveils a unique style of music the couple has dubbed “Cinematic Americana.”Bowen Young's timeless debut record, created by Clare Bowen and her husband, Brandon Robert Young, is a multi-sensory feast. The music, produced by Sean McConnell, invokes themes painted by the duo's powerfully authentic lyrics and hypnotic harmonies.Clare, the charismatic actress who played Scarlett O'Connor in the popular show Nashville, is known as a ray of sunshine around the world. She is an empath who leads with her heart, able to communicate and translate emotions, whether on stage or on screen.Born in rural Australia, she moved to Music City in 2012 for the Nashville role and immediately earned respect from the city's musical leaders. She has performed with artists such as Vince Gill and Zac Brown Band, working with Grammy Award-winning producers/songwriters T-Bone Burnett, Colin Linden, and Buddy Miller, who became her mentors. She toured her eponymous album for sold-out crowds with Brandon in Germany, Australia, the US, and UK. The pair also earned a coveted spot on Sugarland's popular “Still the Same Tour” and toured live with the Nashville cast, selling out London's O2 Arena.Brandon, who began singing at age five under the gentle guidance of his mother, had a very different upbringing and path to Nashville. In 2000, he moved from Enfield, CT, to Nashville, where he taught himself to play guitar. He worked as a courier during the day and spent his nights filling empty composition books with song after song.He spent a decade touring with music legend John Hiatt, first as percussionist and background vocalist and eventually becoming one-third of The John Hiatt Trio. He worked on three of the famed artist's albums, the last of which was nominated for a Grammy in the Americana category.Brandon has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning artists Emmylou Harris, Colin Linden, and Mikky Ekko. Young was also invited by John Carter Cash to finish one of his father's unpublished works for Johnny Cash Forever Words. Brandon's music has been heard in shows such as Shameless. A Million Little Things, and Nashville. It was serendipity that brought Bowen Young together in 2013 when Brandon was a last-minute replacement for Clare's no-show duet partner for her first solo set at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. They immediately discovered they had wonderful chemistry both onstage and off. Brandon proposed to Clare at the Ryman Auditorium during the couple's Grand Ole Opry set in 2015. They were married by John Carter Cash at the Cash Cabin in 2017.How to connect with Clare Bowen and Brandon Young :Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bowenyoungofficial/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bowenyoungofficial/About the Host -Belinda Ellsworth is a Speaker, Trainer, Best-Selling Author, and PodcasterShe has been a professional speaker, mover, and shaker for more than 25 years. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. The name alone gets your attention. I mean, they all wear black suits. So, you may ask, which one is Blackie. They are all Blackie. Stephen Fearing, has a fine solo career with a seriously growing fan base, outstanding critical reviews and he's a Blackie. Tom Wilson is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, artist, and author. A bear of a human, a Mohawk soul, and a good man. Colin Linden is a music lifer. He's doing what his head and heart told him to do. Starting when he was perhaps 8. Colin left Canada fully formed and famous, for Nashville and set up his studio. He's been making music ever since. Solo career, writing, creating, and producing Blackie music. Produced Keb' Mo's Grammy album. Toured as part of Bob Dylan's band. So Blackie is Stephen, Tom, OK I am loading now, and Colin. Together, in spirit, in spirituality, and bound by 12 notes and the truth. New album is O Glory; Lost those blues again (Stephen spent a great deal of time teaching n the Maritimes this Summer. Was not available for our Zoom interview) The zoom video can be seen and heard on our terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel www.blackieandtherodeokings.com colinlinden.com stephenfearing.com tomwilsononline.com

Every once in a while all of the planning goes OUT THE WINDOW. This week's Podcast for example. I always knew there would be a complete interview with Suzie Ungerleider (Oh Suzanna). Her new 10th album is called My Name Is Suzie Ungerleider and the story behind the title tells quite a tale. The music is the best she's ever released. So, the complete interview and tracks as well. Suzie closes the podcast. Also this week, I was doing interviews with Barney Bentall, Colin Linden, and Russell Broom about their involvement in Remembering The Last Waltz. Four nights of celebrating The Band's Last Stand almost 45 years ago. Sept 2 & 3 Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Sept 9 & 10 Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Before we shared memories of The Band we talked about the passing of Charlie Watts. Legendary drummer for The Rolling Stones. His effect of The Stones and on us is remarkable considering how quiet and gentle he was. As large and loud as all The Rolling Stones were, it was Charlie that held it all together, on stage and off. So..we start this Podcast by remembering Charlie Watts, then The Band, and celebrating Suzie Ungerleider. Busy week. Cheers Charlie..
Starting with Kidman Blues and Ending with Crossroads you might think that this week's show is all classics, but it's packed to the rafters with brand new tunes as well... we have songs from Sean Chambers, Mama and Friends, The Altered Five Blues Band, Christone Kingfish Ingram, Tim Aves and Wolfpack, Tito Jackson (yes that Tito), Bernie Marsden, GA-20, Sara Lee, Blind Lemon Pledge, Lucky Peterson, Connor Selby, Colin Linden, Mike Zito and more!

I think that Edmonton-based singer/songwriter Joe Nolan is one of those true “old soul” songwriters. He's been writing songs that are deeper and wiser than his years for over a decade. He first came to my attention when Six Shooter Records put out the album Tornado in 2014 and set him off on the road to promote it. His name was unknown to me, but the label was well known, and the list of people who helped make that record was impressive. It was produced by the great Colin Linden, who was the guest on episode 3 of this show. He brought in his usual stellar backing musicians, and special guests Lindi Ortega and Tom Wilson, so the album got a quick listen. I loved it from the start. As good as that album is, Joe has demonstrated some of the most remarkable growth that I've ever seen in a young songwriter and performer. He's truly dedicated to improving and learning as much as possible and will settle for nothing but the best that he can write and put out. I think that one of the reasons that I'm also so drawn to Joe as a person is that we have similar personalities in a lot of ways. He struggles with darkness and doubt and despair but finds a lot of joy and strength in music and especially live performance. Joe is truly one of the hardest working musicians that I know. Normally, he'd have toured all over the place and done hundreds of shows over the past year, but Covid had other plans. He's made the best of his time though, and just announced a new album called Scrapper, and I really hope that you'll pre-order that and purchase some of his other albums by visiting him on Bandcamp at joenolan1.bandcamp.com You can learn more about him at joenolanmusic.com Joe had a lot more to say about the album, but I thought this episode was probably long enough already, so I've got more of my chat with Joe coming up on the May 23 edition of my other show, Tell the Band to Go Home, which you can find most places where you find this show, or at tellthebandtogohome.com
Fly with your Shadow is an interview-based podcast featuring conversations about music, mental health, and the devastating effect that the COVID pandemic has had on all of it. You can find us on social media @flywithyourshadow and on our website, flywithyourshadow.com Colin Linden (www.colinlinden.com) has played guitar alongside Willie P Bennett, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant, Bruce Cockburn, and countless others. He's also 1/3 of roots rockin' supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings (www.blackieandtherodeokings.com). Colin has also released 12 or so highly acclaimed albums of his own and is preparing for the release of a brand new album in 2021. He's also a highly sought after album producer. He co-produced John Bottomley's album Blackberry, which you heard a lot about on last week's show. John and especially that album greatly inspired me to create this show, so I wanted to know more about the making of the album from someone who had a big hand in making it as great as it is. music credits and more info: : flywithyourshadow.com/episode-3-colin-linden

They're one of the greatest musical trios this country has ever produced. Tom Wilson, Stephen Fearing, and Colin Linden - aka Blackie and the Rodeo Kings - join us on today's show. Mike had the pleasure of sitting down with the guys in those glorious days before physical distancing became the new normal. In 2020, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are celebrating their 25th year together, so of course we discuss that longevity and the unique chemistry they share, as well as the making of their new album, King of This Town. Tom also discusses the incredible personal journey he’s been on over the last seven years, and Colin and Stephen ponder it from their unique vantage point. http://canadianmusician.com This episode is sponsored by Bandzoogle. Although they each have successful solo careers Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, and road warrior Stephen Fearing together are Blackie and The Rodeo Kings. In 2020 the boys celebrate being together and making music for 25 years. How did they kick off 2020? Jan 4 they played The Ryman Theatre, home of The Grand Ol’ Opry. Stephen Fearing packed his bags and went touring his solo album The Unconquerable Past! Colin won a Grammy for Keb Mo’s Oklahoma, which Colin co-produced in his home studio in Nashville. Just days ago Tom Wilson gets a Juno nomination for Lee Harvey Osmond. And Blackie releases King of this Town . The coming tour may take the entire year! What started off in 1996 as a one off tribute album in celebration of the music of Willie P Bennett has evolved into 25 years of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Quite simply one of Canada’s finest bands. Ever!! Enjoy the stories!

“I’ve never thought in terms of a ‘career.’ I’m uncomfortable with the word. I don’t use it because I’ve never approached what I do that way." One of the greatest Canadian songwriters of the last five decades, Bruce Cockburn, joins us on this week's podcast. An inductee into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and member of the Order of Canada, Bruce is about to release his 34th (!) album, which is an all-instrumental collection entitled Crowing Ignites. In this wide-ranging conversation, Mike and Bruce chat about his earliest years as a songwriter and performer in Massachusetts and Ottawa, the first song he wrote that he knew was good, the generational crossover in his audience, his friendships and partnerships with his long-time producer Colin Linden and manager Bernie Finkelstein, songwriting (of course), and a bunch more.
I have an hour ahead that you may find to be just a little different than the usual in The Roadhouse. Aside from a few upbeat tracks, I've also got quite a bit more mid-tempo and acoustic blues than usual. Fruteland Jackson, Jontavious Willis, Colin Linden & Luther Dickinson, Seth Walker, and William Clarke send us off in a slightly different direction than we normally take. One thing is definitely the same, though - it's another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 746th Roadhouse.
Singer, guitarist, songwriter, and four time Grammy-winner Keb' Mo' talks to Terry about his new album 'Oklahoma', which was released this Friday. The pair discuss Colin Linden's role producing the record, which features collaborations with Taj Mahal and Rosanne Cash. Keb' gives us the backstory on tracks: "Don't Throw It Away", "I Remember You", and "Put A Woman In Charge".
Terry talks to Colin Linden about his latest release - a collaboration with Luther Dickinson titled 'Amour', backed by The Tennessee Valentines featuring Dominic Davis (bass), Bryan Owings (drums), Fats Kaplin (violin and accordion), and Kevin McKendree (keys). Plus, Colin shares some big news for Blackie and the Rodeo Kings fans.
Colin Linden - guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer - is one of Nashville's most interesting musicians. You may have seen him in the Americana Awards house band, or as a key live musician on the TV series Nashville or in the dynamic Canadian country rock band Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. He wasn't born into the blues but he sure found the music early and made it his own, through a very early meeting with Howlin Wolf and a pilgrimage through the Deep South in his teens. He's also been a long-time band leader and producer for Bruce Cockburn. We talk about all that, as well as the project he's just completed with fellow blues musician Luther Dickinson and others, a suite of vintage love songs called Amour. Plus, a visit with the new owner and proprietor of a revived historic studio in Nashville, the former home of Cowboy Jack Clement.
“I believe in the divine," Bruce Cockburn shares with Terry David Mulligan on this week's Mulligan Stew podcast. "I believe there is something at the center of the energetic universe that is intentional, and focused, and is both macro and very personal and interior.” Bruce talks to Terry about his faith, and how it's reflected on his latest album 'Bone on Bone,' produced by Colin Linden. Plus, the pair discuss the influence of Al Purdy's poetry on the new record, and what impact political tensions in the US had on the record.

Late last year I had some great in studio guests for an even better cause. Nashville resident Trent Dabbs and Nashville cast member Sam Palladio, along with musician Colin Linden, came into the Lightning 100 studio. They chatted about writing together, ABC’s Nashville, and helped raise awareness for the victims of the Typhoon Haiyan. Although Austin may have laid claim to the title of the "live music capitol of the world," there really is only one town where musicians with a hardcore jones for country music make their pilgrimage. Native Canadian Lindi Ortega had already made a name for herself up north, releasing a pair of EPs and a record that racked up a pair of Juno award nominations when she arrived in Nashville. But once in Guitar Town she hit the red ground running, enlisting fellow Canadian journeyman musician Colin Linden to produce her newest record, "Cigarettes and Truckstops." The result is a set of ten songs that play like Dolly Parton on steroids. There are nods to the female forebears of torch and twang - Emmylou, Loretta, Tammy and Patsy (all the demigoddesses that should be on Music City's Mount Rushmore) but Ortega is also a writer of substance who is not afraid to singlehandedly attempt to pull country music into the 21st century by questioning the authority of Nashville's politically incorrect establishment. Her songs pull no punches, but they are dressed up in enough sequins that the good ol' boys may be too entranced by her voice and charming stage presence to know they're being rendered archaic. And you simply must hear her smoldering take on The Man in Black's "Ring of Fire." If Ortega is the future of country music, we can't wait to see where we're going.

This edition features more holiday music and a big variety of styles and tempos. Colin Linden, W.C. Clark, Little Freddie King Blues Band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Snooky Pryor fill the hour: another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 406th Roadhouse.
The 399th Roadhouse contains about as much music as I've ever had in a show. In fact, it's so packed full, we're at risk of breaking the fire code. Little Milton, Colin Linden, Shemekia Copeland, Maria Muldaur, and Robert Cray are among the many artists who fill yet another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
Kelowna's Kim McMechan has just released her second album of tunes in the classic singer-songwriter vein, produced by Colin Linden. She also uses her blog regularly to post new music as well as photos and writings at kimmcmechan.com
The beginning of today’s show is inspired in large part by the amazing Colin Linden shows I witnessed last night. We’ve also got some great new music including the long, long, long awaited new album from Gillian Welch! And, this past Thursday on Steel Belted Radio I did an oddball, unexpected hip-hop set, and what’s a guy to do when he does something weird (but fun), except do it again! We’re having a hick-hoppin’ good time today.

Some stellar all-time classics to start off today’s show, before we veer off to preview the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, including the Colin Linden shows on Saturday. And, we’ve done some weird things on this show in the past, but a hip-hop set? It’s finally happened, Mudge has lost it.

You’ve got to be careful to avoid whiplash on today’s show, because we’re looking back & forth all over the place. We look back at last night’s amazing Sunset Saloon show, Jack Marks in Winnipeg, as well as the amazing work of “The Big Man” Clarence Clemons. We’ve got great new music, some that’s out already (back) and some that’s coming out soon (forth). And, it’s Jazzfest in Winnipeg, and there’s plenty of us non-jazz lovers to enjoy.

A show I wish I never had to do. Yesterday, one of the true guiding lights of this show went out, as Canada's greatest songwriter of all time, Willie P Bennett died. His songs and spirit will live on forever, but it's sad to think that we'll never see him or hear from him again. In memory of him, two hours of memories and music from the man, including Willie originals, Willie covers, a song about Willie, songs featuring Willie, and Willie live. We heard from friends like Stephen Fearing, Scott Nolan, Colin Linden, and Willie's longtime boss, bandmate, and friend, Fred Eaglesmith. Rest in peace, great one.
