Last week, Richie and Killian travelled to France to sit down with Vera Pauw at her home in the Dordogne, as she speaks publicly for the first time since the week the FAI declined to renew her contract seven months ago. Vera describes the impact she felt the allegations published just before the World Cup in The Athletic about her time as manager of the Houston Dash - allegations which she denies - had on Ireland's World Cup campaign, and how she thinks she is now unemployable in the western world. She also responds to Diane Caldwell's suggestion that everything Ireland achieved, including their first World Cup qualification, was in spite of Vera being their manager, and outlines the disconnect she feels with the team she spent four years with. This week, British blues guitarist, singer/songwriter Bex Marshall brings us Irish funk rock band Republic Of Loose and their acclaimed 2004 debut 'This Is The Tomb Of The Juice'. With a surprising range of sounds for an outfit from Dublin - including gospel, rap, smoky blues and dirty funk - leader Mick Pyro and company sound like a cross between OutKast and the Stones, with a bit of Sly Stone thrown in. Although relatively unknown in the states, they attracted some heavy duty fans back home in their relatively short existence including Damien Dempsey, Sinéad O'Connor and Bono. "It must be something in the water..." Songs discussed in this episode: Intro - Republic Of Loose; Lay Down And Die, 5AM, The House Of Mercy, I Can't Look You In The Eye - Bex Marshall; Ride With Us (Live, The Olympia Theatre 2006), Kiodin Man, Hold Up! - Republic Of Loose; Give It Away Now - Red Hot Chili Peppers; Girl I'm Gonna Fuck You Up - Republic Of Loose; Miss You - The Rolling Stones; The House Of Mercy - Bex Marshall; Something In The Water, Tell More Lies, Slow Down - Republic Of Loose; Over The Rainbow - Eva Cassidy; Sweet Cola Of Mercy, Six Sober Sounds, Dial Jesus For Sweetness - Republic Of Loose; Guilty, Dirty Water - Bex Marshall; Black Bread - Republic Of Loose; Preaching To The Choir - Bex Marshall

In this episode we look at a very difficult time in Ireland - one that triggered a time of death across the population of the island as well as emigration for many generations afterwards. I'm talking, of course, about "An Gorta Mór" - also known as "The Great Hunger" or "The Great Famine" of the mid 1800s.The first letter looks at a particular landless class in Ireland - who formed a sizeable percentage of our population - but who were, more or less, wiped out during the Famine.I wrote the second letter when I came across an account from 1847 which profiled particular families in a townland in West Cork. That account was all about my own O'Regan ancestors of that townland. It certainly stopped me in my tracks! We also have Irish songs of emigration (and one on optimism for the future) to help us focus on this time.Music featured in this episode:"Spancil Hill" performed by The Wolfe Tones."The Emigrants Farewell" performed by Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh."The West's Awake" performed by Lumiere and Damien Dempsey.Support the Letter from Ireland Show:Thank you for listening to the Letter from Ireland show. I am really excited to introduce my guest for this episode, the one and only, Damien Dempsey. It was a dream come true to get to have this chat with Damien, described by many as the "Voice of a Generation."If you're a Damo fan, you'll know that his song “Apple of My Eye” is all about his love for New York City - and in our conversation he tells me about how coming here as a young musician helped him to believe in himself and how he met some of his greatest friends and mentors here in the City. As a young musician in Dublin, Damien felt that people looked down on him for writing songs about the social issues of modern-day Ireland, and for singing in his own accent. These are two important attributes that have come to define Damien as an Artist. When he was in his twenties, Damien came to New York and played his songs in the famous Manhattan bar ‘Rocky Sullivan's' – which attracted an eclectic group of artists, writers, NYPD officers, lawyers and politicians back in the day. Rocky's  was owned by a mutual friend of ours – retired NYPD Chief of Homicide and proud Irish American, Brian McCabe, who kindly made this episode possible.  When I started this podcast I had a list of ‘dream guests' and Damien Dempsey was one of them - so I am beyond grateful that I got to have him on In this episode Damien speaks honestly about the shame and guilt we have been forced to feel as a Nation, His respect for the Irish that travelled the world and set down a framework for future generations and the importance of spirituality, of travelling the world and how music can help us through life.I really got so much from this conversation with Damo and I hope you find some comfort and inspiration from his message.
