On this podcast episode, I talk with artist Rob Parkinson. Rob is a graphic designer who has worked as an artist for different companies and eventually went into business for himself as a full-time freelance designer. Rob also started an online t-shirt company of his own called Relik Ragwear where he recreates logos of Wisconsin places from the past that have gone out of business. Rob and I used to work together when I was in high school at a store called Artwave where we hand-painted custom t-shirts. What do we know about the American Revolution? Why is it important that we see the Revolution as a political event, a war, a time of social and economic reform, and as a time of violence and upheaval? Woody Holton, a Professor of History at the University of South Carolina and the author of Liberty is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution, joins us to explore and discuss answers to these questions so that we can better see and understand the American Revolution as a whole event. The American Revolution took place within a larger period known today as the “Age of Revolutions.” What does the Revolution look like when we place it within this larger context? Did it really help foment the many other failed and successful revolutions that took place during the period? Over the next two episodes of the Doing History: To the Revolution series, we’ll explore answers to these questions by taking a closer look at how the American Revolution fit within the larger context of the Age of Revolutions. The first part of our exploration will take us into the Caribbean. Laurent Dubois, a professor of history at Duke University and the author of four books about slavery and revolution in the French Caribbean, will serve as our guide. Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence? Not just the "all men are created equal" part, but the whole thing? If you have, then you've noticed that most of the Declaration is simply a list of complaints against King George III. And some of those complaints seem odd to modern ears. Especially the last one, about "domestic insurrections." What insurrections? By whom? Rob Parkinson of Binghamton University tells us all about it.
"Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence? Not just the “all men are created equal” stuff - have you read the whole thing? If you have, then you know that most of the Declaration is simply a list of complaints, bad things that the colonists said that the king was doing. And perhaps you’ve noticed that one of those complaints accused King George III of encouraging “domestic insurrections?” Really? What insurrections? And by whom? Rob Parkinson of Binghamton University will tell us all about it." Your Weekly Constitutional is hosted by Constitutional Law Professor Stewart Harris.
