Connacht produced their best performance since beating Lyon in the Challenge Cup last January with a stunning 27-point victory over South Africa's HollywoodBets Sharks on Saturday (29th November 2025) to pick up their second win in this season's BKT United Rugby Championship. Tries from Paul Boyle, Chay Mullins, Hugh Gavin, Matthew Devine and Sam Illo gave Stuart Lancaster's side a five-star result, moving them up to 10th, just one point outside the top-8. Join us for Saturday's Race of the Day: Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland. David Aragona and Mike Beer share their thoughts and insights.
As we digest the first quarter of the season, Caley Thistle's 100% away league record lies in a shallow grave in Cumbernauld. Why is North Lanarkshire where ICT's dreams go to die? Why does no-one ever choose a pie for their last meal on earth? Why does The Climb make tough guys cry? And why should you never accept a ride in a boat from two foam-rubber Loch Ness Monsters? In our latest pod, Godfather Andrew Moffat and capos Sandy Sutherland, Stevie Riley and Andrew Young get stuck into all these questions and serve up the usual 31 years of ICT references, wild conjecture and mild distraction. Let's shuffle! 00:00:56 – Introduction and Hamilton Postmortem. Moff introduces the panel and we analyse Saturday's disappointing defeat in Cumbernauld and how the team might respond to it. 00:22:40 – First Quarter Report Card. We are 25% of the way through league season 2025-26, so it seems like a good time to look back and evaluate how ICT are doing so far. Who is top of the class? Who could do better? And who wins the prize for perfect attendance? 00:36:58 – Game by Game. The panel looks back at our recent league wins against East Fife and Queen of the South, a demolition of Dundee B in the KDM Evolution Challenge Cup Trophy, and considers whether new mascots Nessie and Nessa would be more at home in New Jersey. 00:48:09 – What yi sayeen? Remi Savage. Duncan Ferguson didn't do much right at ICT, but he did bequeath us Remi Savage, one of our standout players since signing in January 2024. Remi spoke to Stevie about coming through at Liverpool and Newcastle, moving to Inverness, surviving administration, and his very positive feelings about the ICT squad and manager. 01:20:30 – The Club. Stevie gets emotional over Kell's love of The Climb; we discuss Alan Savage's plans for the future of the club as he takes full control of ICT; and we look forward to good times later this week, as Moff hosts the ICT Supporters' Trust's Scottish Cup 10th Anniversary night. 01:31:48 – What yi sayeen? David Proctor. An important contributor to two successful promotion campaigns and with more than 100 top-flight appearances for ICT under his belt, David Proctor is something of an unsung hero in Inverness. Now in his third spell with the club, having exchanged his boots for the physio's table, David tells Stevie about life after leaving Caley Thistle, why he has returned, and how being a former player has helped him in his new career. 02:02:47 – League Lookahead. A very quick skip through the upcoming games against Forfar in the Challenge Cup and Kelty Hearts and Peterhead in the league. There's it! Whaddayagottado?
We're back with another episode of Glory Days of Gold, the East Fife and Scottish football podcast recorded across two continents! East Fife are unbeaten in seven and impressing along the way. Sitting a point off the top of Scottish League One and in the mix at the top of the Challenge Cup standings, everything is starting to click for the Bayview boys and they should have nothing to fear as they look for back-to-back promotions. With a lot of the podcast regulars otherwise engaged, Aaron and Andrew welcome Oli Anderson to the show to make his debut to chat about it all.
For many, the Challenge Cup Final was their first real taste of the sport. Either watching on TV and listening to legendary commentators such as Eddie Waring and Ray French, or travelling down to Wembley to witness rugby league's 'big day out' in person. The 1968 'Watersplash' final remains iconic, but this list of top ten finals begins forty years ago with a record crowd of 99,801 inside the national stadium witnessing a classic encounter between two teams of rugby league superstars wearing their classic hooped kits. Peter Sterling and James Leuluai of Hull manufactured some memorable moments, and there was a sensational try for Wigan's Henderson Gill, but it was Brett Kenny of Wigan who became the first Australian to win the Lance Todd Trophy as man-of-the-match after scoring a stunning try.Martin Offiah's 1994 length of the field score and iconic celebration, slumped to his knees with his head in his hands, is now immortalised as part of the rugby league statue at Wembley. Bradford Bulls superstar Robbie Paul scored the first-ever final hat-trick two years later and in 1998 Sheffield Eagles caused one of, if not, the biggest shock in a major final in any sport in any era. Head coach John Kear was at it again with Hull FC in 2005 as Paul Cooke danced his way over the line for a crucial late score. While one of the great Wembley tries occurred in 2011, a real family affair, made by Sam Tomkins and finished by brother Joel.Catalans Dragons played in the first final at the newly developed Wembley in 2007. They lost that day to St Helens, but just over a decade later returned to become the first non-English team in 121 years to win the cup. And when Papua New Guinea international half-back Lachlan Lam travelled half-way round the world to play for his father Adrian, his crucial golden point drop goal which claimed the cup for “Little old Leigh” 52 years after their last success, was the stuff of fairy tales. But which one will come out as the most memorable Challenge Cup Final?
With administration over, Alan Savage confirmed as outright owner and chairman, Kell and Billy in the dugout, points accumulating and crowds on the rise, Inverness Caledonian Thistle has finally got its soul back. And it doesn't just have its soul; it also has Sole! In this first full-size podcast since the 2025-26 league season began, Moff, Sandy, Stevie and AY discuss the impact made by the rocket man from Watford and we hear from Liam himself; we also have a more sedate chat with Joe Chalmers, analyse games past and games to come, and shoehorn in the usual 31 years of ICT references, wild conjecture and mild distraction. Let's shuffle! 00:00:58 – Highs and lows. Moff introduces the panel and we reveal our highs and lows from the opening weeks of the season 00:05:35 – Game by Game. The panel looks back at our recent league wins against Alloa and Montrose, and against Stirling Albion and Aberdeen B in the KDM Evolution Trophy aka the Challenge Cup. 00:39:55 – What yi sayeen? – Liam Sole. The on-loan Livingston winger has made an electrifying start to his ICT career, bringing the support to their feet with every touch of the ball and scoring the winning goals in our last two games. He spoke to Stevie about his career to date, the high expectations he places on himself, and his hopes for his time in Inverness. 01:09:22 – The Club. The official end of administration! The renaming of Caledonian Stadium! Why is Alfie Stewart playing for two clubs? Will Robbie Thompson's loan move to Brora be the making of him? We dissect the latest goings-on behind the scenes at Caley Thistle. 01:21:40 – The New Kit. Caley Thistle's new home strip was finally unveiled on August 28th. What do the TWS panellists think of it, and why is Alan Savage no longer talking to Stevie? Plus: we look forward to the recently-announced Scottish Cup Winners 10th Anniversary Night 01:32:10 – What yi sayeen? – Joe Chalmers. One of the first signings announced in the close season was the return of Joe Chalmers to the club. Stevie talked to the elegant midfielder about what brought him back to Inverness, the spirit among the current squad and his affection for garlic bread. 02:07:20 – League Lookahead. We look forward to September's remaining league fixtures, against Cove Rangers, Queen of the South and East Fife. 02:16:48– Competition winner announced! Are you the lucky winner of a stunning t-shirt from the new Wyness Shuffle range?
The signing of overseas players hasn't always meant adding quality to the competition, but this list of the very best certainly did. Although it's fair to say some made much more of an impact than others. For instance, the 'greatest player of all-time', Andrew Johns, made just three appearances for Warrington at the end of the 2005 season, and couldn't lead them to silverware. In the 1980s it was common practice for legendary NRL players to sign short-term contracts in England during the off-season 'Down Under'. More recently, imports have actually made their name in Super League, winning Grand Finals, Challenge Cups and earning recognition as the Man of Steel.Widely regarded as one of the games' finest players, Australian international player and coach, Mal Meninga, joined St Helens for the 1984/85 season and helped them win the Lancashire Cup and Premiership title. While Kiwi centre, Dean Bell, won seven successive Challenge Cup Finals with Wigan, including three as captain, and made such an impact he was the subject of 'This is Your Life' in 1993.Robbie Paul followed his brother Henry to Bradford and lit up the game making rugby league 'cool'. He was named 'Super League Player of the Season' aged just 20, whilst loose-forward Adrian Vowles with Castleford, centre Jamie Lyon at St Helens, full-back Brett Hodgson with Huddersfield and winger and goal-kicking machine Pat Richards at Wigan were all crowned the 'Man of Steel' between 1999 and 2010.Joining Robbie at the Bulls was 'The Volcano', Lesley Vainikolo. The huge New Zealand winger won two Super League titles and three Challenge Cup finals with Bradford scoring 149 tries in 152 games. And more recently, Wigan's Bevan French has really shone in Super League, not only winning silverware, but incredibly being named as 'Player of the Match' in three finals during 2024.So, who will take the accolade as the greatest import of all?
Galway's over-40s aim to deliver back-to-back national crowns on Saturday (30th August) when they take on Limerick in the Challenge Cup decider. The Tribesmen won this competition in 2024, beating Cork (4-11 to 1-16) and beat the Shannonsiders in the group stages this year. Abbeyknockmoy's Delcan Molloy captains the side, and 18 clubs are represented in the squad. Rahoon-Newcastle's Ben Mangan is the Galway manager and he looked ahead to the contest with Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly. == Throw-in at Rapparees Starlights GAA, Enniscorthy on Saturday is 2pm, and is a double header with the All-Ireland Final between Wexford and Tipperary.
This episode talks to Dr Nick Halafihi about the life and career of his father, Nanumi (Nan) Halafihi, the first Tongan to play at Wembley and the first-ever Tongan to play professional rugby league. This is a fascinating story of how Nan travelled with his brother Sione, a world-ranked cruiserweight boxer, and family friend Sam Felatu, and made a home in the north of England. He began his career with Doncaster in 1958 and then moved to Roy Francis's Hull, where he established himself as attacking left-centre and played in the 1960 Challenge Cup final at Wembley. This is about much more than rugby talent - it's a tale of crossing hemispheres and cultures, of the warm welcomes he received but also of the racism he and his family faced. Most of all, it's about someone whose career who paved the way for hundreds of other Tongan rugby players who would follow the path laid down by Nan Halafihi.

In episode 298 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Garry Miller. Garry is a communications professional and worked as a publicist in the BBC Sport communications team at the same time our Founder Freddie worked at the BBC. Garry's first proper job was working for Wigan Council, where he cut his teeth across a range of areas including policy, project management and investigating benefit fraud. His big break came when England hosted the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. The organisers put a call-out for volunteers, including one role of press officer for the tournament. Garry applied for the role and was successful. He then took 6-8 weeks of annual leave just to do the role. After the World Cup finished, he went back to his day job but it wasn't the same. He had got the sport bug and wanted to get back in the industry. He started volunteering for the Wigan Warriors rugby league team to help with their game day operations and unfortunately was then made redundant from the council. Afterwards, he landed a job with the Rugby Football League, the sport's organising body in England and worked for them for four years. He had the opportunity to work with the England national team and at all major events for the sport, including the Challenge Cup tournament, ‘Magic Weekend' and the Super League Grand Final. After four years, he felt he had done everything he could in that role and he saw an opportunity at the BBC in their Sport team. From there, he worked on every big BBC Sport announcement and campaign you can probably think of, as well as podcasts and setting up interviews for all the titans who worked there at the time, including the likes of Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. In 2022, Garry left the BBC and moved to a new role with the Trust Alliance Group (TAG). Based in Warrington, TAG provide a range of products and services to build, maintain and restore trust between consumers and businesses. In this episode we discuss Garry's career from Wigan Council days to where he is now, the glitz and glamour years in the Beeb, and why he wanted to leave to do a role which provided him with more purpose and impact. For Garry's mental health, we discuss a period of struggle he went through whilst working at the BBC around five or six years ago. We discuss the factors behind it, being prescribed medication, which he is still on now, the positives its brought and the side-effects and the support he had at that time in work and outside of it. We finish by discussing his partner's post-natal depression when his son was born. We talk about the impact that witnessing her mental health difficulties had on him and how he supported her through taking on more caring responsibilities for his son until his partner was able to overcome what she was going through. Nine new players in at the time of recording: we discuss what each of the club's summer signings can bring to the team. 00:35:05 – The squad. We expected to lose Remi Savage, Paul Allan and possibly Luis Longstaff, but they know a club on the up when we see one. We discuss the potential importance to the team of retaining these players and the others who have signed on again, then look at other areas that we still have to strengthen in. Is there another striker in the offing? Also, listen out at the end of this section for your opportunity to be part of TWS's Player Sponsorship. 00:51:10 – What yi sayeen? – David Wotherspoon. The fans wanted him back, the club wanted him back and he wanted to come back, so together they made it happen. Stevie has a happy reunion with Spoony, discussing what he loves about Caley Thistle, what he can bring to the club this time around, and what he'd eat on his last night on earth. 01:20:20 – Rebranding the Stadium. In early June, Alan Savage announced that the Caledonian Stadium was set to be renamed under a three-year deal with prospective sponsors.
