C'est ça l'Amérique
100 jours de Donald Trump, le président de la rupture - avec François Furstenberg

C'est ça l'Amérique

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2025 24:19 Transcription Available

Furstenberg est l'auteur de deux ouvrages : In the Name of the Father (Éd. This soon evolved into a fully realized brand, drawing inspiration from her Caribbean heritage, her grandmother’s seamstress background with Diane von Furstenberg, and her own travels. Now, she partners with family-owned collectives worldwide, working with 90% recycled materials and championing age-old techniques in her stunning, story-driven pieces. The Stories: “On my first day as a CFDA member, I stood up in front of then-president Diane von Furstenberg and Steven Kolb and I asked what our industry's plans for sustainability was. I remember the Olsen twins sitting in front of me and turning around, staring at me. Everyone was staring at me. ‘Who is this girl?' Diane and Steven looked at each other and said, ‘We have none.'"The Backstory: Grew up with two creative grandmothers and aunts; one grandmother who was an award-winning quilter and who had hand-selected the rocks that her grandfather built their house with. Her mother is an ‘overachiever,' former lawyer who creates watercolor art and who spent hours with Melissa as a child making food for her Barbie refrigerator. “My dad, although he isn't crafty, is very intellectually creative.”Wisdom Rains: “I tend to look at the shifts and the circularity of my business – marked by what some people might call ‘trauma' – as opportunities to rebuild better. Even though they're really challenging to go through at the time, you really learn what's important, and what you want.”On Inspo: “The way that we make jewelry is so influenced by traditional Mexican silversmithing techniques. I don't do a lot of casting. We hand-make, hand-form, hand-hammer using a lot of the same tools that are used in Mexico. I really appreciate their craft and attention to detail.” Names her mother as ‘super-inspirational' for how she's reinvented herself to achieve many different things over the years. On Community + On Her Store: “People really enjoy getting together and talking about things, trying stuff on and having fun. I've only been in business for as long as I have, because of my community. I've built really strong relationships that have carried me through really challenging times, so I feel like nourishing those, intentionally. My wholesale partners have become a strong focus, so has creating the same type of partnership and energy within my store.”What Else: “There is a lot of technical detail within what we do that doesn't scream, ‘look at me.' It's an understated elegance that allows each person to put their personal stamp on my jewelry when they wear it.”Obsixed: A collection of Melissa's current lifestyle obsessions and brands.Discover more + Shop The Podcast:melissajoymanning.com

Despite my absence, I didn't think it was fair – that our lovely listeners should miss out on an incredible episode with an incredible guest and so I recruited, my Smart TV co-host, the wonderful Caroline Frost, to take-over for this episode! Diane Von Furstenberg – you'll know as the iconic fashion designer who created the wrap-dress. But, she is also a lady who has lived and a new documentary, Woman in Charge on Disney+, gives us a glimpse into her fascinating life story. She was born and raised in Brussels in 1946. Her mother, only 18 months before Diane was born, had been imprisoned at Auschwitz. Diane's mother left a lasting impact and influence over Diane – which she talks about with Caroline in the episode. Diane entered high-society when she married a German Prince, Egon von Furstenberg. They moved to New York and this is when Diane kickstarted her fashion career. It was the 70s and life was governed by hedonism – in this episode, she talks about turning down a threesome with Bowie and Mick Jagger and rubbing shoulders with the greats. She also reflects on the highs and lows of her life, her sensuality and how it defined her brand and breaking glass ceilings as a woman in business. Latino Americans' purchasing power hit $3.4 trillion in 2021, according to a report from the Latino Donor Collaborative, and is expected to account for over one-third of growth in apparel spending in the next five years, according to the 2021 Claritas Hispanic Market Report. With Nielsen noting that women are largely in control of household spending in this demographic, designers and retailers are working to make their sectors more inclusive to Latinas as consumers. But it's a tough hill to climb given they remain underrepresented in leadership roles in both fashion and retail, with Women's Wear Daily calling out our guest, Sandra Campos, as one of the only Latina CEOs in global fashion during her tenure at Diane von Furstenberg. On this episode, we hear from Sonia Smith Kang, an AfroLatina mother who left a career in nursing to start the multicultural children's clothing line, Mixed Up Clothing, after struggling to find representative clothing for her own kids. Then, Carla speaks to Sandra Campos, a leading Latina voice in retail and the co-founder of Latina Disrupters, an annual networking event for entrepreneurs. They discuss the need to empower Latinas working in retail and fashion so they can take on leadership positions in the space, as well as how US retailers can better serve the rapidly growing Latino population.https://www.morganstanley.com/what-we-do/inclusive-innovation-and-opportunity Disclaimer textThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co.
