Today we had the honor of welcoming back our good friend Dr. Dan Yergin, Vice Chairman of S&P Global, Chairman of CERAWeek, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Prize” and more recently “The New Map.” He is widely recognized as one of the foremost experts on energy, geopolitics, and the global economy and his achievements and contributions to the energy industry are immense. We were delighted to have an hour of Dan's time to hear his latest insights on the evolving energy landscape and to preview key themes and discussions at CERAWeek, which is kicking off in just under two weeks. This Tuesday, Dan's paper, co-authored with Peter Orszag and Atul Arya, was published in Foreign Affairs titled “The Troubled Energy Transition: How to Find a Pragmatic Path Forward” (linked here). Dan also recently co-authored an article titled “The importance of US LNG for economic growth and the global energy transition” (linked here). In our conversation with Dan, we explore key themes from both pieces, including the challenges of balancing energy security, economic growth, and the global energy transition. We ask Dan for his perspective on today's complex geopolitical environment, the influence of the current U.S. administration on energy and regulation, and global energy competition, including the divide between developed and developing nations, where economic growth and energy access remain a top priority. Mike Bradley kicked off the show by noting that broader equity markets seem to be entirely focused on AI-related news this week. He noted that rumors earlier this week that Microsoft was cancelling data center leases have slammed the stock prices of IPP & Electrical Providers. NVIDIA reports Q4 results after Wednesday's close, which will set the tone for equities (AI Tech & IPPs) through the end of the week. On the crude oil market front, over the last week WTI price has sunk ~$3/bbl ($69/bbl) on several factors, chief among them being growing optimism of a potential Ukrainian ceasefire. Offsetting this potentially bearish oil news is a growing belief that OPEC will delay April scheduled production increases to 2H'25. He rounded out the conversation by highlighting that the focal story in Energy equities this week is BP's Capital Markets Day (set for Wednesday, details linked here). He noted that BP has previously indicated that the theme for their Capital Markets Day will be a “fundamental reset of strategy” and that investors aren't going to settle for small changes, rather, they're demanding a wholesale retreat from renewables, significant non-core asset sales and a total refocus on fossil fuels. He successfully reduced the number of applications from 3,000 to 200 and secured significant funding to enhance cybersecurity for naval facilities. His proactive approach and ability to communicate complex issues through compelling storytelling were crucial in achieving these milestones. Jones underscores the importance of storytelling in leadership. At NAVFAC, he used visual storytelling to convey the critical need for cybersecurity measures, which resulted in securing $100 million in funding and 100 full-time equivalents (FTEs) for cybersecurity efforts. This approach demonstrated the power of combining technical expertise with effective communication. AgResearch expert Dr Kioumars Ghamkhar says the trials have been successful so far. "In vineyards, you don't kill all weeds. Artist and curator Lubaina Himid unravels entangled histories of transatlantic slavery and textile production, across continents, and Britain's museum collections, via Lost Threads (2021, 2023). Lubaina Himid considers herself ‘fundamentally a painter', but textiles have long been part of her life and practice. Had she stayed in Zanzibar, the country of her birth in East Africa, she may have become a kanga designer, following a pattern set by her mother's interest in fashion, and childhood spent around department stores in London. First commissioned by the British Textile Biennial in 2021, and installed in Gawthorpe Hall's Great Barn, her 400m-long work Lost Threads' flows in a manner reflective of the movement of the oceans, seas, and waterways which historically carried raw cotton, spun yarn, and woven textiles between continents, as well as enslaved people from Africa to pick raw cotton in the southern states of America, and workers who migrated from South Asia to operate looms in East Lancashire. Now on display in Bath, the rich Dutch wax fabrics resonate with the portraits on display in the Holburne Museum's collection of 17th and 18th century paintings - symbols of how much of the wealth and prosperity of south-west England has been derived from plantations in the West Indies. Lubaina talks about how the meaning of her work changes as it travels to different contexts, with works interpreted with respect to Indian Ocean histories in the port city of Sharjah, to accessible, participatory works in Cardiff, and across Wales. We consider her ‘creative interventions' in object museums and historic collections, ‘obliterating the beauty' of domestic items like ceramics, and her work with risk-taking curators in ‘regional' and ‘non-conventional' exhibition spaces. We discuss her formative work within the Blk Art group in the 1980s, collaboration with other women, and being the first Black artist to win the Turner Prize in 2017. And drawing on her interests in theatre, Lubaina hints at other collections and seemingly ‘resolved' histories that she'd like to unsettle next. We have been intrigued by some of the news coming out of the World Economic Forum (i.e. Davos) and have been on the lookout for someone who could give us an objective, independent summary and assessment of the gathering. We were elated to connect with our special friend Dr. Dan Yergin for such a discussion. While impossible to succinctly summarize his achievements and contributions to the energy industry, Dan is the Vice Chairman of S&P Global, the Chairman of CERAWeek, and the author of several books, with his most recent being "The New Map." He is a Pulitzer prize-winner and a highly esteemed energy expert. It was our pleasure to discuss Dan's key takeaways from the event as well as preview this year's CERAWeek Conference. We covered a lot of territory in our conversation starting with Dan's impressions of Davos and the role of major international conferences (Davos, COP, etc.), the unique role of the Founder and Chairman of the World Economic Forum Professor Klaus Schwab (bio linked here), this year's top theme, and geopolitical concerns including proxy wars, disruptions in the Middle East, and Red Sea disruption affecting oil tankers. Dan shares his perspective on oil market dynamics, OPEC+ cohesion and oil demand projections for 2024, Russian production resilience despite international service companies pulling out of the country, global energy forecasts and the gap between IEA and OPEC projections, Argentine President Javier Milei's impactful speech (linked here), power/electricity demand growth, copper and mining challenges, and more. We also discuss the CERAWeek Conference taking place from March 18 – 22 in Houston and how the conference's theme of "Multidimensional Energy Transition: Markets, Climate, Technology and Geopolitics" will translate across sessions such as LNG, geopolitical complexities, and the changing global environment. Dan never disappoints and we had a great time visiting with him (as usual!). Mike Bradley kicked off the show by highlighting recent bullish equity market sentiment, his current energy commodity thoughts, and key things to focus on as the energy sector ramps up Q4 reporting over the coming weeks. On the equity market front, he remains concerned that equity volatility is very low and equity market sentiment is very bullish. Broader equity markets like the Nasdaq and S&P 500 continue making all-time highs due to continued optimism with AI and large-cap technology stocks, while smaller indices like the Russell 2000 continue to trade well below their all-time highs, therefore a narrow market breadth. Global crude oil prices have caught a bid in recent weeks (WTI at ~$75/bbl). Both Brent and WTI crude oil time spreads have moved back into backwardation, for the first time since November, which typically signals a tighter physical market, and could be related to frigid U.S. temperatures. U.S. natural gas prices plunged by ~$1.00/MMBtu over the last week, which has pushed natural gas price to ~$2.40/MMBtu. On the energy sector front, Q4 energy sector reporting has begun with the Big3 oil service companies reporting and over the next couple of weeks, energy sector reporting will broaden out to a handful of NAM land rig/frac companies, E&Ps, midstream, oil majors and refiners, all of which should provide a clearer picture of the 2024 classic energy landscape.
