We are a time and place in America where more children of Holocaust survivors are with us than survivors themselves. In some ways this is the lens through which many Americans understand how the Nazi regime murdered 6 million Jews in the 1930's and 40's. Sassa Akervall's mother survived the Holocaust. She shared part of her family's story in the book, The Ones Who Remember: Second-Generation Voices of the Holocaust. It was published in 2022 by members of Temple Beth-Emeth in Ann Arbor and contains a collection of essays telling the stories of the children of Holocaust survivors. “The sky is the limit here. I really think so. If you put the work in, if you aren't afraid of giving it your all, I think there's a good potential in each and every one of us to reach goals that we set up.” After a diverse career in Sweden, Sassa Akervall, CEO of Akervall Technologies, moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she founded her mouthguard business. After starting her business at the kitchen table, Sassa began distributing prototypes to her daughter's sports team -- and promoting through the Roller Derby Girls. When purchase orders started to dry up as a result of COVID-19, Sassa, within only 10 days, pivoted to produce face shields. In less than two weeks' time, Sassa Akervall and her team at Akervall Technologies executed a pivot from a crashing athletic mouthguard manufacturing business to making clear plastic face shields for those in need of protection when interacting with the public.
