In this fiercely tender episode, Quinn explores sisu—a powerful Finnish word that describes the inner grit that rises when there's nothing left to give but you keep showing up anyway. Drawing from their own ancestral roots, Quinn reclaims the kind of strength that isn't about pushing harder, but about remembering who you are when the world goes quiet. This is not about hustle. This is about sacred perseverance. This is not girlboss strength. This is sisu.Through stories, reflection, and a closing guided meditation, Quinn offers practical and soulful ways to reconnect with your own unshakable strength after divorce—especially when you're tired of being the strong one.In this episode, you'll hear:Why “I'm tired of being strong” is not a weakness—it's a thresholdThe history and soul of sisu, a Finnish concept of embodied resilienceHow to make meaning from pain (Viktor Frankl-style)The power of ancestry and generational strengthMain character energy vs. passive survivalA somatic practice to locate your sisu in your bodyHow rest can be revolutionary—and part of your strengthA beautiful grounding meditation to closeQuotable Moments:“Sisu is the decision to keep showing the fuck up—even when no one's clapping.” “You don't have to earn rest. You are already enough.” “Sisu begins where perseverance ends.”
After enjoying our first ever Fog Day celebration last year, as April 21st approached again we wanted to take things to the next level. It sounded like a good idea to try the next generation with the remake. That was before we realized it has a 3.7 out of 10 on IMDb. We try our best to make sense of things and see the bright side, but still come away with a ton of questions and so many issues. It's a really fun time though, analyzing how this was made and how it should have been done instead. So sorry if you have to watch this because of us, but it certainly led to a very interesting conversation! Before that, Jake gives spoiler-free first impressions of Too Old to Die Young, Severence season 1, and Sisu. Dustin has only seen The Chosen Season 5. Then we both were asked to check out an indie movie on streaming called Little Miss Sociopath so give our more involved thoughts on that as well. This week on GRIT: The Real Estate Growth Mindset, Brian Charlesworth is joined by Jace Gillies, team leader at Utah Life. They talk about growth, leadership, and building a team that performs with consistency. From closing 29 deals in his first year to now leading over 90 agents, Jace shares what it looks like to scale while keeping culture intact. Jace talks about his start in real estate, coming from warehouse work and having no idea how to write a contract. A quick ask for help turned into joining a six-agent team and earning six figures in year one. “I thought I couldn't make money on a team, but I had no idea what teams even offered,” he says. The conversation moves into Jace's transition from top producer to team leader and what it took to turn around the Salt Lake office. With systems missing and accountability lacking, Jace lost nearly half the agents in his first month. “They didn't want to work. They didn't want to be held accountable,” he explains. But with daily effort, recruiting, and buy-in, that office went on to close over $100M. Brian asks Jace about recruiting, and Jace shares the script and mindset shift that helped him add 31 agents in one quarter. He highlights how he uses social proof, automation, and consistent follow-up to find the right people. “I finally believed we were the best place for agents. Once I owned that, everything changed,” he says. They close out by discussing agent productivity and how Sisu plays a central role. From onboarding to coaching to contests, everything is built around tracking what matters. “I don't know how to coach without numbers. Sisu gives us everything,” Jace adds. Top Takeaways: (4:16) Value of teams & shifting mindset (9:35) Taking over the salt lake office (14:09) Mental shift in recruiting (18:24) Tracking for predictable closings (25:57) Sales contests & team culture (29:50) Leading by example in real time (33:26) Impact of sisu on everything If you're a team leader looking for structure or an agent trying to grow without guessing, this episode is packed with examples of how to do both. Tune in now! About Jace Gillies Jace Gillies leads the Salt Lake City expansion at Utah Life Real Estate. He entered the industry five years ago and now oversees sales for the entire team. Using Sisu, Jace coaches agents, tracks performance, and drives recruiting. His focus is on building a team where growth and results stay consistent. Connect with Jace: LinkedIn

One look at Sisu should be enough for any reasonable to immediately deduce that in no way shape or for show you screw with this guy on any level. Phrases like "Yes, sir No, sir, May I help, sir, Thank you for not forcibly removing my spleen, sir" are all perfectly acceptable forms of communication with Sisu. Things like, "Imma shoot your dog, blow up your horse, steal your gold and burn down your country," are NOT what one would call a sensible conversation. Sisu is a film that flew under the radar for many action fans for the simple reason that a theatrical release shortly after the worst of the COVID pandemic killed the hopes and dreams of most films that weren't named Godzilla or Maverick. This film is worthy of being in a "Banger" month so please see the film before you listen. P.S. I know damn well that the main character's name isn't Sisu. Don't @ me. Sisu is way easier to remember than Aatami.
Right now, outrage seems as rampant as complacency, and both are lost opportunities from the vantage point of of life force. Being a "constructive badass" is a path to growth, change, and leadership amidst high pressure situations. The more we develop the skill of constructive dissent and engage in the art of insubordination—how to speak up with courage and clarity—we create degrees of freedom for courage in the everyday. For this Sisu Lab episode, I had the joy of interviewing Professor Todd Kashdan, one of the world's most cited psychologists and a curious thought leader on courage, character, and all things psychological flexibility. This conversation rocked such a unique flow of exploring life, ideas, and the co-creative space possible between curious humans anywhere that it felt like a real highlight. The experience itself, to me, speaks of how can help each other rise to our best just by being genuinely excited about each other (like kids!) and viewing moments of interaction as opportunities to unearth something valuable together.Todd and I jammed about:How to dissent effectively without breaking connectionWhy good people may struggle to be brave when it matters mostThe difference between being a principled rebel vs. a reactive troublemakerWhy true change-makers often face delayed rewards—and how sisu can help us stay the courseBalancing activism with mental health, and what keeps us going through long fights for changeThe gift of witnessing each other fail—and grow and heal togetherWhat it means to be an “upstander” (with a nod to educator Jackson Katz)How everyday acts of courage and kindness shape the bigger environment we call our lifeTodd's insights come from decades of research—and deep skin in the game. He's the author of several brilliant books, including Curious, The Upside of Your Dark Side, and most relevantly: The Art of Insubordination.
On paper, fish have everything required to be an excellent staple to many diets. They're rich in protein, vitamins, trace elements, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, and aren't too high in calories. The only downside is that fish live in an increasingly polluted environment. What with heavy metals and plastic waste invading the oceans, more and more people are concerned about the pitfalls of eating fish. After all, they can be contaminated by chemical pollutants such as PCBs, methylmercury, or dioxins. These endocrine disruptors can have very harmful effects such as causing neurological disorders or forms of cancer. Furthermore, food derived from fish flesh is also likely to be contaminated with microorganisms such as bacteria and parasites. Should we stop eating fish then? Should I avoid any other types of fish? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the latest episodes, click here: What is Sisu? What does Mercury in retrograde mean? This episode of Living Myth begins with the idea that we are experiencing not just radical changes that happen in quick succession, but a maelstrom that threatens to upend life as we know it. The word maelstrom comes from old roots meaning, “a grinding stream or great whirlpool that sucks everything into its downward spiraling vortex.” Being alive at this radical time when extreme changes engulf most areas of life means that we repeatedly risk being overwhelmed and pulled down by events that can be disheartening and discouraging. Faced with increasing uncertainty we must find things to hold on to that can keep us from being pulled under. We need the practices, the arts and the methods that allow us to witness the maelstrom but survive the vortex of descent and despair. People in Finland use the term “sisu” to describe an inner ability to push past usual limits when facing great adversity and survive even when the obstacles seem to be insurmountable. Sisu involves an innate quality and latent power that exists deep within each of us, that can be accessed when our limits are tested and our greatest fears are faced. In that sense, sisu involves having the courage to follow what feels right and what feels just, and trust in life's hidden potentials. While sisu bears similarities to notions of resilience, grit and will power, it goes much further. The understanding of sisu includes an underlying sense of individual courage, but it also involves an awakening of the principle and power of a just and inclusive sense of social unity. Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are on an unstoppable quest to get our gold back from the worst scum imaginable. We watched the 2022 film from Jalmari Helander, Sisu. What do you get when you cross a crapload of found gold, a bunch of Nazi bastards, and what could rightly be called the Finnish Superman? You get one of the bloodiest, revengiest films ever made. There's a proverb that revenge is a dish best served cold. When you're in the far northern part of Finland, where temperatures can plummet down to -60º F (around -50º C), then the only temperature revenge can be served is freaking freezing.Let this film be a lesson to us all. If you ever happen to meet a grizzled looking Finlander who's on a determined trek, then stay the hell away from them. Seriously.
