A leather-clad Alexander Skarsgård is riding into this week's Take as our very special guest. That's because he's here to talk about ‘Pillion', the one-of-a-kind comedy drama where he stars as mysterious BDSM biker Ray. The film follows his unfolding relationship with Colin, a shy small-town boy played by Harry Melling—who you might have heard on the show a few months back chatting to Simon about ‘Harvest'. Colin begins to discover his submissive streak under Ray's dominant hand, as their complex relationship develops. Alexander sits down with Simon to unpack the film—a ‘Dom-Com', as he calls it—and gives us the lowdown on what a Skarsgård Christmas looks like too. Don's miss Mark's review of ‘Pillion' on next week's show. This week we've got his verdicts on three more juicy new releases for you as usual. First up, ‘Sisu: Road to Revenge'--the Finnish action sequel to 2022's ‘Sisu', where seemingly unkillable action man Aatami Korpi goes on a revenge rampage against the Red Army. Plus, Bizarre biblical horror ‘The Carpenter's Son', starring Nicolas Cage going full Nicola Cage yet again—and ‘Wicked: For Good' – the sequel to last year's musical smash spectacle. The Good Doctors run down the box office top 10 too—and from the top of the charts to the bottom of the barrel, there's the Laughter Lift. Plus your excellent and erudite correspondence answered.

Coy Jandreau & John Humphrey react to Sisu (2022), the brutal and stylish Finnish action film written and directed by Jalmari Helander (Rare Exports, Big Game). Set during the final days of World War II, Sisu has become a modern cult favorite thanks to its over-the-top action, striking visuals, and a near-mythic one-man-army protagonist. The story follows Aatami Korpi, played by Jorma Tommila (known for Rare Exports and Big Game), a quiet prospector with a terrifying past. When he strikes gold in the Lapland wilderness, he attracts the attention of Nazi soldiers led by the ruthless SS Officer Bruno Helldorf, played by Aksel Hennie (The Martian, Headhunters). What follows is a relentless warpath of retribution as Aatami single-handedly takes on an entire platoon determined to steal his fortune. Supporting performances include Jack Doolan (The Boys, Marcella) as the vicious Wolfgang, Mimosa Willamo (Aurora, Bodom) as Aino, one of the women captured by the Nazis, and Onni Tommila (Rare Exports) in a memorable minor role. Iconic and highly searched scenes from Sisu include the minefield sequence, Aatami's insane underwater knife fight, the tractor convoy ambush, the hanging escape, and the over-the-top plane finale that cements Korpi as one of the toughest action heroes of the past decade. With its grindhouse energy and jaw-dropping stunts, Sisu is a blood-soaked ride that blends spaghetti western vibes with '80s action excess. Up close".

Grab your pickaxe and prepare for pure, unadulterated chaos! On this explosive episode of The Commentary Booth, hosts Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey are reloading the 2022 Finnish action spectacle, Sisu, ahead of its highly anticipated sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge. They dive deep into why this Jalmari Helander film is a breath of fresh air in the World War II genre, ditching the typical American narrative for a lone, near-mute Finnish commando who transforms into an unstoppable force of nature.Highlights Breakdown:A Unique WWII Powerhouse: Discover why Sisu stands out by focusing on a Finnish one-man army instead of American troops, calling it "Kill Bill meets John Wick meets Inglourious Basterds."The Man of Few Words: How the lead character barely speaks, yet steals every scene with pure presence, scars and an almost mythic reputation.Action with a Capital "A": A rave review of the film's insane, creative, and brutally satisfying kill sequences, from minefield frenzies to underwater breath-stealing, and the fantastic cinematography that makes it all pop.The imprisoned women and their arc: A subplot that's easy to forget but impossible to ignore once you revisit it, especially the pitch-perfect payoff in the final act.The Heart of the Chaos: A discussion on the film's effective chapter-based structure and the surprisingly touching emotional core of a man who just wants to be left alone.Sequel Hype Train: First looks, predictions, and backstory revelations for Sisu: Road to Revenge, and why Jamie will be rushing to the cinema for this one.Listen as Jamie and Corrina unpack everything from the wild kill sequences and the tense chapter structure to the unexpectedly moving character beats, the role of the imprisoned women, and how the sequel might fill in the blanks of Korpi's past. It's getting chilly outside, so pull up a chair and warm your soul with a classic Apple Cider Hot Toddy! We're mixing up this comforting blend of hot cider, whiskey, honey, and lemon—the perfect cozy companion for a week of cinematic spectacle. The box office is burning hot, thanks to the final chapter of a spellbinding saga! We dive deep into Wicked: For Good, discussing the final showdown between Elphaba and Glinda, the arrival of Dorothy, and the fate of Oz's beloved—and feared—witches. Then, we shift gears to pure, unadulterated action with the sequel Sisu 2. The Finnish one-man army Aatami Korpi, "the man who refuses to die," is back! We break down the new road-rage-fueled revenge plot against a Soviet officer and the outrageous, over-the-top action that proves this franchise is just too angry to quit. And speaking of a good run, we're dissecting the newly released, highly-anticipated, Edgar Wright-directed take on the dystopian classic, The Running Man (2025), starring Glen Powell. Does this new, darker adaptation—which is a more faithful to the Stephen King novel—deliver the savage social satire and thrills we've been waiting for?All that, plus the week's Box Office News and our recipe for the warming toddy!Merch ShopPatreonInstagramBlueskyFacebookhttps://www.drinkthemovies.comYouTubeDiscord*Please Drink Responsibly*

Recorded live in San Francisco during TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 week, this Fund/Build/Scale session brings together Cyan Banister (Long Journey Ventures) and Cristian Cibils Bernardes (Autograph) for a practical look at building consumer AI and the investor-founder dynamics that make it work. We dig into pre-traction signals that actually predict momentum, how to validate a weird idea, raise smart money, and ship products people return to. Cristian shares Autograph's first moment of value, retention indicators, and a trust-by-design stance; Cyan unpacks the decision rules and behaviors that earn a second meeting. Together, they outline small-budget experiments and the frameworks they use to create products that stick. For first-time founders and early operators, this episode delivers concrete steps you can start taking tomorrow. Thanks very much to Jenna Birch and the team at SISU for co-hosting and making this live recording possible! EPISODE BREAKDOWN (1:54) Why Cristian named Autograph's AI agent “Walter.” (3:37) When they connected, Cristian saw “a bunch of synchronicities along the way that just kept pointing in this direction.” (4:59) Cyan: “When he showed up and we were sitting together having coffee, I immediately was like, ‘yes.'” (6:03) The sheer number of coincidences linking these two is unsettling — “quantum entanglement” comes to mind. (8:18) Cristian and Cyan share their non-consensus takes on consumer AI. (10:53) Cyan describes the framework she's using to assess early signals as an investor. (12:51) “I will not look at your résumé. I won't look at what you did. Whatever you tell me in that interview is what I'm going to go off of.” (14:42) “Fundraising is grueling. It was 50 conversations before I met Cyan, and then I had, I think, another 30.” (16:53) Cyan's framework for backing vs. passing. (18:26) The three essential ingredients Long Journey Ventures seeks in founders. (22:00) What a “magically weird” founder looks like — and why they're so valuable. (26:15) A red flag that ensures you won't get a second meeting with Cyan. (27:52) A behavior that virtually guarantees a second meeting. (29:45) Cristian describes Autograph's moat. (34:40) “This whole thing doesn't work if the trust element isn't there.” (38:08) What founder-investor fit looks like in their working relationship. (41:57) One experiment founders should run this week. (43:10) The most underrated founder superpower. (44:10) “If you were interviewing for a job at an early-stage startup, what's one question you'd have to ask the CEO before you could take the offer?” RUNTIME 47:19 LINKS Cristian Cibils Bernardes Cyan Banister Autograph Long Journey Ventures The Ugly Duckling SISU SUBSCRIBE

THE WOLFE IS LOOSE!! Erik Wolfe, that is. I sat down with Stoll & Wolfe distillery co-owner/founder/distiller Erik Wolfe a couple weeks ago when we did an American Whiskey Master Class event there. I wanted to get his thoughts on a number of things, and as usual, I had a whole page of questions to ask.  That's not what happened. I asked my opening question, and Erik took off like a rabbit. We covered -- excuse me, he covered a lot of territory, and honestly, I found it all fascinating, so I just let the recorder roll. It's a bit longer than we usually go, but I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it. I did take the book to Baltimore shortly after that, and had an event at Sisu, a new little bar with a big personality, run by friends of mine...and maybe yours, because they've become well-known in State College and Philadelphia. I also got a great dinner in Little Italy, at Benny's, advertising "The Best Balls On The Block," and it was no hollow boast.  What I'm Drinking Today is a Stoll & Wolfe whiskey, very limited release, one barrel only of a rye whiskey made with Rosen rye and malted Rosen rye. The result was intriguing, and wonderful. The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is about pizza again; three great spots in Centre County! (More pizza because holy cow! That Original Italian Pizza episode went crazy! You loved the OIP Story!) Next episode? I have an interview with an old friend, a young old friend, who's brewing in Lititz, Pennsylvania, and I take the opportunity to profile that wonderful little town, our first Lancaster County profile. I also deliver some big news about the Seen Through A Glass holiday schedule that I think you're going to like. A lot. Vieme kto sme a kam chceme smerovať? No a hlavne, chceme to vôbec vedieť?Chýba nám to, čomu Fíni hovoria "Sisu", teda odolnosť, vnútorná sila a odhodlanie čeliť náročným situáciám. Vedomie toho, kto sme a čo stojí za to brániť, hovorí šéf Inštitútu DEKK. Nemáme žiadny spoločný príbeh, za ktorým by sme stáli my všetci, celé spoločenstvo. No a nielenže sa na takomto príbehu vôbec nevieme zhodnúť, ale my ho dnes už ani nehľadáme. Víťazia polarizačné algoritmy sociálnych sietí, krátkozraká konfrontačná politika a klanová mentalita. Počúvate Ráno Nahlas, pekný deň a pokoj v duši praje Braňo Dobšinský.

CTO Series: Toni Sallanmaa on Scaling Engineering Teams and Aligning Tech with Business Goals In this BONUS episode, we explore the journey of scaling technology teams and maintaining alignment between engineering and business objectives with Toni Sallanmaa, CTO at Funidata. Toni shares invaluable insights from leading the development of Sisu, a cutting-edge student information system serving over 100,000 Finnish university users, and discusses practical strategies for growing engineering organizations while preserving company culture. The Genesis of Leadership in Technology "I understood what I was really responsible for. I'm interested in the business we are running—the business adds meaning to the work." Toni's approach to technology leadership was fundamentally shaped by a pivotal moment early in his career when he first gained influence over system development and technology choices. After working with large-scale systems for 20 years, this moment of responsibility revelation transformed his perspective from purely technical to business-focused. He emphasizes that infinite curiosity drives success in tech businesses, and understanding the business context gives meaningful purpose to technical work. Bridging the Gap Between Tech and Product "Don't separate Tech from Product. We established a common language between product and technology people." One of Toni's most significant insights centers on eliminating the traditional divide between technology and product teams. As Funidata grew from a small startup to a 70-person organization, the challenges of maintaining alignment became apparent. Their solution involved several key practices: Teaching developers the language of the product domain  Banning confusing technical terms that create communication barriers Workshopping product language to ensure clarity Keeping entity names deliberately vague until true understanding emerges This approach draws heavily from Domain Driven Design principles, creating a unified vocabulary that enables seamless collaboration. Collaborative Planning and Transparency "We use transparency as a collaboration technique. Every team sees what's being proposed as a goal for the next quarter." Funidata implements a unique "marketplace of goals" approach during their quarterly big room planning sessions. Rather than using scaled agile frameworks, they focus on transparency and collaborative goal-setting. Teams present their high-level quarterly plans to each other, creating visibility across the organization. Product owners are embedded within teams, keeping communication distances short and ensuring alignment between technical execution and business objectives. Future-Forward Roadmapping "We talk about the higher level ideas regularly, but let them bubble up from the community. We hold internal hackathons." Toni's approach to roadmapping balances strategic vision with grassroots innovation. They maintain an internal technology roadmap that addresses emerging trends like AI, while allowing ideas to organically emerge from the engineering community. Internal hackathons serve as catalysts for innovation, providing structured opportunities for teams to explore new technologies and approaches that might inform future roadmap decisions. Scaling Challenges and Cultural Preservation "The biggest challenge is not technology, it was the rapid scaling of technology teams. When you scale up, keep the culture in mind." The most significant challenge Toni faced wasn't technical but organizational—rapidly scaling teams while preserving company culture. Growing from 10 to 50 people required evolving processes, from establishing internal forums for architectural discussions to implementing continuous integration flows. The key was identifying pain points proactively and maintaining open discussions with team members throughout the scaling process. Strengthening company culture became essential to successful growth. AI's Impact on Software Development "Productivity is on the rise. We see opportunities like generating test data, but we have strict requirements for cybersecurity, which puts pressure on code quality." Toni views AI's impact on software development with cautious optimism. While productivity gains are evident, particularly in areas like test data generation, the stringent cybersecurity requirements in their domain mean that AI hasn't yet significantly improved code quality where it matters most. The technology shows promise, but implementation must be carefully considered within the context of security and quality requirements. Measuring Engineering Success "We use DORA and SPACE framework. We measure how much of our work is KTLO (Keep The Lights On) and how much is elective development." Funidata employs both DORA and SPACE frameworks to measure engineering organization success. From SPACE, they particularly focus on measuring software team wellbeing, while also tracking the balance between "Keep The Lights On" (KTLO) work and elective development. Using JIRA connected to a data warehouse, they mine extensive data that serves both leadership decision-making and team improvement efforts, ensuring metrics benefit everyone in the organization. Influential Leadership Resources "The organizational books have been more influential to me than purely technical ones." Toni emphasizes that organizational leadership books have shaped his CTO approach more than technical resources. Two key influences stand out: "Team Topologies" for understanding how to structure and scale engineering teams effectively, and "Radical Candor" for building authentic, productive relationships within the organization. You can find a BONUS episode on Team Topologies with the authors Matthew Skeltton and Manuel Pais. About Toni Sallanmaa Toni leads technology and engineering at Funidata, developing Sisu—a cutting-edge student information system serving over 100,000 Finnish university users.
