Send us a textThe Renaissance humanist Biondo Flavio dedicated his massive book Roma Triumphans, a historical investigation of what made Rome great, to his fellow humanist Pope Pius II. He contended that central to the story of Roman greatness was Roman religion, and that the Roman Catholic Church was the heir of the Roman Empire, correcting its faults even as it carried its legacy into the modern world. As James Hankins discusses in Virtue Politics, the main policy position that Biondo advocated for, in order for Europe to recapture the spirit of ancient Rome, was a renewal of the Crusades, so that the dominion of the Catholic Church could encompass the territory of the Roman Empire.James Hankins' Virtue Politics: https://bookshop.org/a/25626/9780674278738New Humanists episode on Irving Babbitt, feat. Libro Rosa (2023). There's a new edition out of the popular book Midcentury Houses Today, and we'll have on co-author and architectural photographer Michael Biondo. Next up, someone we admire for keeping Modernist houses on the radar in Los Angeles, filmmaker Russell Brow, founder of FORT LA, aka Friends of Residential Treasures. Later on, music from Durham's Sharp 9 Jazz club with pianist Lenore Raphael and guitarist Howard Alden.
This month we are focusing on health literacy, or the ability to find, access, understand and use health-related information. First up, Ryan talks to Kate Nyhan, the founder of Community Access to Ventilation Information, about her mission to make air quality monitors available to the public through libraries. Then Ariana interviews Yale medical librarians and Hamden residents, Kayla del Biondo and Alexandria Brackett, on the importance of health literacy, how it informs their work and what we can do to make sure the health and medical information we are getting is accurate.Additional resources:CAVI websiteCRAAP TestNewsGuardMedlinePlusMedlinePlus MagazineNetwork of the National Library of MedicinePubMed Centralclinicaltrials.govThe Model Health ShowThe Huberman Lab Podcast@thatgaydoctor (Instagram)
Biondo Biondi, the Director of the Stanford Earth imaging Project (SEP), joins Seismic Soundoff to discuss SEP's 50-year history and future outlook. Biondo reflects on SEP's founding during the 1970s oil crisis and today as it tackles modern energy challenges. Biondo discusses how improving seismic imaging can support the future of carbon capture and geothermal energy and help build resilient cities. Biondo uses an article in The Leading Edge from 1987 on the then-called Stanford Exploration Project to offer insights into what we still know and don't know about geophysical data. He also shares why he believes so many SEP alums have been guests on this podcast! The Stanford Earth imaging Project is an industry-funded academic consortium within the Geophysics Department at Stanford University. SEP research has contributed greatly to improving the theory and practice of constructing 3-D and 4-D images of the earth from seismic echo soundings. The consortium was started in the 1970s by Jon Claerbout and is currently co-directed with Biondo Biondi. SEP pioneered innovations in migration imaging, velocity estimation, dip moveout and slant stack. SEP has recently been involved in 3-D seismic applications such as velocity estimation, wavefield-continuation prestack migration, multidimensional image estimation, and 4-D (time-lapse) reservoir monitoring.

Jes Biondo is a daughter, a former Back2Back staff member, a traveler, a teacher, lifelong learner, creator of Sprezza Foundry Shop, and Executive Director and Podcast host of Collected Ministries & Podcast. Jes attributes her desire to say yes, even when she doesn't know the outcome, to her parents and a teacher from her childhood. She has taught English camps in Thailand, served the vulnerable in Mexico, and held teaching workshops in Kenya, among many other things. She believes serving is never one-sided - we can both teach and learn everywhere we are, and this model allows for sustainability within communities. In this episode, Jes shares how she knows when God is leading her to something or asking her to reroute. How to avoid burnout… this is the million-dollar question for so many of us, right? We want to help animals and the earth but it's exhausting. And when other people don't seem to be on board it gets even harder. I've been struggling with burnout this year. Our move to Florida was announced a year ago, and the saga of deciding whether to go, and then executing on it has been… intense! I found myself with very little momentum to do anything. I did however feel inspired to bounce back after watching my earth-loving friends slay their businesses and decided to ask them how they avoid burnout. It turned into this panel discussion. The overarching theme was: SIMPLIFY. Begin by REALLY knowing ourselves. Choose our priorities by NARROWING DOWN and ONLY CHOOSING those that align with WHO WE ARE, and WHAT ACTUALLY WORKS in our life. And then STAY IN OUR LANE and keep delivering on those few priorities. We're extremely excited this week to have Pappy Biondo of Cabinet as our guest on No Simple Road! We catch up with Pappy and get right down to business talking about the origins of the band, why their sound has morphed and changed over the years, how finding a banjo under a bed can change your life, the way Pappy views Cabinet as a band and what it does, the way that the members of the band guide and support each other through the experience of being a band, and a whole lot more!Cabinet wears their influences like badges, honoring the canon of roots, rock, reggae, psychedelia, blues, bluegrass, country, and folk, weaving these sounds into a patchwork Americana quilt. But this music isn't romanticizing or rehashing the past. Cabinet makes it mark on today. The creators of the Spring Fling bracket races, Peter Biondo and Kyle Seipel, join the DragChamp Show this week! We're super excited to have drag racing royalty on the podcast as Peter and Kyle have taken bracket racing to another level with their Spring Fling brand. In addition, both are talented racers with a resume that would fill a room. We sat down to discuss the upcoming Spring Flings in Galot and Bristol, and the Fall Fling West in Vegas, but also got some background on their racing careers including details on a few of Peter's crashes. Peter discussed his heartbreaking loss at the U.S. Nationals in 2019 and battling Mike Sawyer for the Super Gas world title. Kyle talked about kicking cancer's ass, his 12 bracket final victories, and how he's more focused on coaching other racers than his own driving right now. Emily Biondo jumped in near the end of the conversation to discuss her first Super Gas race and her burnout struggles. By the way, she went on to win that race! We also broke down the upcoming Young Guns vs. Has Beens that's going down Thursday at the Spring Fling Million in Bristol. This was such a cool conversation with two of the greats in our sport. We hope you enjoy it.The DragChamp Show is a weekly bench racing style podcast where hosts Jake Hodge, Ryan Gleghorn, and Gary Don Free sit down with racers to discuss current racing topics and share racing stories.
