The world is filled with authorities. Your boss, your governor, your president. For each of us, escaping authority is an unthinkable dream. We all have someone to answer to. Yet, when it comes to the gospel, we don’t often talk about authority. Gift, grace, compassion? Sure! Authority, demand, obedience? Well, we might whisper something about them, as the fine print of a sermon. For what does authority have to do with the Good News of Jesus? As it turns out, much.

Jesus cleansed the temple of corruption. He cursed a fig tree and it withered immediately. The tree looked great from afar, but it had no fruit, so Jesus caused it to die. Jesus was sending a message. The religious leaders of Israel went to great lengths to look good, but their actions denied the fact that God had any place in their hearts. Jesus said real faith in Him can accomplish mighty things. Now Jesus is teaching in the freshly cleansed temple courts. The emboldened religious leaders think He has no right to do what He is doing, and approach Him to trap Him. His response exposes their sinfulness, and the truth that the worst of worst can receive grace, forgiveness, and new life when they trust in Him. What do we learn about Christ’s authority form this passage?

Connecting People to God in Christ
Faced with questions concerning his authority while teaching in the Temple, Jesus turns the tables on those questioning him by probing their attitudes towards John the Baptist. As part of the debate, Jesus tells the parable of the two sons and relates a story centered on the coherence between words and deeds, an issue that continues to plague us today.
For Jesus, the political is pastoral and the pastoral is political. Casey FitzGerald preaches from Matthew 21:23-32.

The trap of the Chief Priests and the elders was that of holy living, but with contempt for those who didn't share in holy living. Jesus and John, on the other hand, judged those in need of repentance (e.g. the tax collectors and prostitutes) as needing repentance, but they judged them with compassion and love. For them, seeing people turn around and begin life anew was more important than punishing them for their misdeeds. Unlike the chief priests and elders, through Jesus and John the Kingdom of God was being lived, proclaimed, and received. Our challenge as the church is to live and proclaim the Kingdom of God in such a way that it is received by those who need it. We too judge when people need repentance, not to condemn, but to acknowledge the need for repentance. We do so with fear and trembling on our part, never presuming not to need repentance ourselves. We avoid the trap of the chief priests and elders and live and proclaim the Kingdom of God so that it will be received. We keep the same mind in us that was is Christ Jesus.

In this message, Pastor Neil encourages believers to be bold: bold in publicly confessing the Name of Jesus Christ; and bold in responding to what God is asking of each of us today.
