Have you ever told God “yes” with your words but “no” with your actions? In The Parable of the Two Sons, Jesus shows us that talk is cheap—but obedience is everything. In this episode, we unpack: ✅ Why God values your actions more than your words ✅ How repentance opens the door for Kingdom purpose ✅ Why it's never too late to say “yes” and follow through ✅ What it means to live with real surrender, not just spiritual performance
Sermon preached by Dr. B.J. Hutto on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church.
Put on that harmonica holder and strum that acoustic guitar--this week, we're going all the way back to 1969 and talking to the legendary folk musicians behind supergroup "Two Sons, Two Daughters". What was it like to be in Greenwich Village in the middle of it all? How hard is it to keep a folk group together? What's Bob Dylan's deal? All is answered this week, my children! This week we will be studying Luke 15:11-32 under the theme “A Parable of Two Sons.” This will be our third straight week hearing Jesus teach on The Banquet. We've heard about a Narrow Door. We've heard about Making Excuses. And now he's teaching about the difference between repentant sinners and self-righteous religious practitioners. We'll explain why the traditional title “The Parable of the Prodigal Son,” which dates back to 16th century English translations and even the Latin Vulgate, is tremendously misleading. This text is as much, or more, about an obedient older brother and how he still stands outside the banquet. How can we pray for you? tinyurl.com/stmarcusprayersFill out our online connection card: tinyurl.com/stmarcusconnectcardIf you'd like to leave an offering or monetary donation to our ministry please click here: https://tinyurl.com/stmarcusgive
The father's house in the first century Jewish world was a picture of security, provision, stability and love. It is the central point of all the activity in the story Jesus is telling in Luke 15. The youngest son leaves and returns to the father's house and the party that is thrown, the one the older son refuses to join, is held at the father's house. In this story Jesus reveals the heart of God our Father and we have the opportunity to ask ourselves, “Who do I identify with? The younger son or the older son?”
A Tale of Two SonsSeries: The Lectionary Preacher: Rev. Jeff SimpsonDate: 30th March 2025Passage: Luke 15:11-24
In this sermon, we explore the timeless Parable of the Two Sons from Luke 15, a story that reveals the relentless, seeking love of our Heavenly Father for all his children. This love is certain whether the children have wandered far in reckless pursuit of freedom or remained close yet lost in self-righteousness. Through the younger son's descent into the pig sty and the older son's resentment in the fields, we uncover how God runs to meet us wherever we are, offering forgiveness, restoration, and a place in His celebration. The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:1-32) illustrates God's joy over a repentant sinner through the stories of a lost sheep, a lost coin, and two sons. The younger son rebels squanders his inheritance and falls into despair before returning home in repentance. His father, filled with compassion, welcomes him back with a grand celebration, symbolizing God's grace. Meanwhile, the older son, resentful of his brother's restoration, represents the self-righteous who struggle to grasp grace. The parable emphasizes that salvation is not earned but freely given, and God rejoices when the lost are found. ★ Support this podcast ★
Well known parable of Jesus about prodigal son has very surprising ending. What is the meaning here?
The religious leaders send spies among Jesus' followers to try to trick Jesus with complex questions. In this context and the turning of the tables, Jesus tells two parables about a vineyard and the wickedness of the religious leaders. The parable of the two sons is about two sons. One is wicked, honest, and repentant and the other is religious, deceitful, and unrepentant. Which one did the will of the father? The parable of the wicked vinedresser speaks to the love of the God, that would send prophet after prophet to Israel followed by his own son which would be rejected and killed. The parable was a condemnation of the religious leaders as much as it is a prophetic annotation of the days to come. Matthew 21:23-22:14Mark 11:27-12:12Luke 20:1-19www.messagetokings.com
In the first episode of Hot Topics, Dr. Jennifer Baker and cohost J. Fotsch welcome Will Cox, a father of two, coach, entrepreneur and self-proclaimed "mediocre dad trying to be good." Will shares his experiences raising two sons with distinct personalities, navigating fatherhood and balancing family life with his career as a solar company owner. This episode dives into why affection matters in fatherhood, particularly in families where open emotional expression may not come naturally. Will reflects on lessons learned from his upbringing, the challenges of showing vulnerability and the importance of building confidence and self-worth in children. Together, the hosts and Will explore how fathers can balance toughness with empathy, ensuring their children feel loved and supported. Join us for this engaging conversation about the joys and struggles of fatherhood as well as practical advice for fostering emotional connection with your children while preparing them to face the world with resilience. Episode Highlights [03:40] "Being vulnerable is a good thing. When I first heard 'Good Dad,' I thought it was some elite club. But really, it's about showing up, being there, and learning from mistakes." [06:00] "Affection matters in fatherhood, even when it doesn't come naturally. It starts with listening, asking good questions, and being present for your kids." [13:38] "You want your kids to be tough, but you don't want to brush away their feelings. Finding that balance is one of the hardest parts of being a dad." [14:11] "My sons are completely different. One responds with a quick 'love you too,' while the other writes back with paragraphs about how much he loves me. It's about meeting them where they are." [20:06] "It's amazing how many kids never hear 'I'm proud of you' or 'I love you' from their dads. Those simple words can make a world of difference."
