Throwback thurs Early Elk Season with Shannon Mobbs Show Notes: Shannon Mobbs is a buddy of mine and it's time to talk about elk season since it's right around the corner. I'm about to head to New Mexico to hunt antelope and a friend of mine has a cattle ranch and I was able to get a landowner tag. It sounds like it will be promising, but I have no idea what to expect. The tag is good for three days and I can use any weapon. Antelope hunting is a lot of fun and I'm taking a friend who's a first timer. Shannon shares what he likes to do to prepare for the upcoming elk season. He picks up his gym time and getting back into it after taking some down time is always difficult. Staying in shape all year round is always ideal and sometimes it helps to switch up your routine. It also helps to keep your equipment and technique dialed in and stay active in whatever season is happening at the time. Buying a new bow and changing up your equipment is all about timing and something that a lot of hunters take into consideration. We get into scouting and Shannon talks about how he chooses the spots he uses for the season. He uses onX mapping technology to zoom in on travel paths and trails. He uses cameras a little bit but doesn't depend on them. Elk hunting is far more competitive these days, which isn't everyone's thing, but Shannon enjoys it. He has tips for folks heading out in early elk season and the difference in tactics between the early season and later. We talk about the moon phases as well and how it impacts elk in different areas. It's been a while since I've had Shannon on, so he spends some time catching us up on his best hunting stories since our last conversation. What's Inside: What to do leading up to an elk hunt to prepare. Changes in equipment and how it impacts hunting. Scouting and how Shannon chooses spots. Tactics for early elk season vs mid and late elk season. Moon phases and elk hunting. Shannon's latest hunting stories. Angry Spike Productions is a group of friends and family that share a common passion for pursuing wild game with archery equipment in the great outdoors. In the mid 1990's they began filming their Roosevelt archery hunts and from that ASP was born. In 2005 Shannon, Brad, Cory and Ken sat out to make a video of their elk hunts. At the time there were no videos focusing on the majestic bulls of the Pacific Northwest rain forests. They released their first video in 2006 titled “Season 2005”. The viewer response was amazing and over 10 years later ASP IS STILL PURSING THE BULLS OF THE COASTAL RANGES IN OREGON AND WASHINGTON. Lessons Learned – Personal Experience Beats All with Shannon Mobbs Show Notes: There's a lot of information out there when it comes to hunting. Between YouTube, podcasts, books, and social media, there are a lot of so-called experts pushing their “conventional wisdom” and hunting tips. But here's the thing: a lot of those people only get success every once in a while. In other words, they don't always know what they're talking about. That's why elk hunter Shannon Mobbs and I are talking about the importance of personal experience today. We've both learned that sometimes, you'll experience things in the field that go against everything you've heard before, and we swap some stories to back it up. That's why it's so important to spend time out there on the lots, even in the off season. For example, Shannon was always taught that you can't bugle Roosevelt elk. But he knew from observing them that they do communicate with each other. Once he was able to teach himself how to communicate like the animals did, his success rate went way up. We also spend some time talking about our equipment setups, and the time it took for us to dial them in. Shannon agrees with me that “the middle of the road is the way to go” when it comes to things like arrow weight and speed, but he also agrees that it takes a lot of time, practice, and tweaking to “find your middle.” What's Inside: Why personal experience is the most important teacher. Bowhunting in thick terrain. How to tweak your archery setup to find perfection. Small changes make a huge difference. Mentioned in this episode: Phoenix Shooting Bags save 20% with code johnstallone JohnStallone.me Days In The Wild Angry Spike Productions Short Description: Shannon Mobbs always heard that you can't bugle elk: but his own experience told him otherwise. He's here today to tell us about how he learned to reject the “common wisdom” of the masses and trust his own experience when it comes to big game hunting. On this episode I sit down with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions to talk about their recent Sitka Blacktail hunt in SE Alaska. This was a true DIY adventure hunt, on public land with over the counter tags. They picked a remote island in Tongass National Forest and tackled the Alaskan wilderness head on. They worked through a few obstacles of course. Things like steep mountains, rugged terrain, biting bugs, and one lost quiver of arrows. But I'll let them tell the story…… Enjoy the podcast.
Living Country in the City sits down at the Western Hunt Expo with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions to talk about the lifestyle of being a bowhunter, the infinite varieties of difficult situations bowhunting places you in, the differences between hunting Rosies and Rockies, calling the "non-vocal" Rosies, terrain and other signs to look for, looking for elk in the bedroom and not at the restaurant, playing the wind in the PNW and generally how folks overcomplicate elk calling. On this episode I sit down with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions (ASP) for short. We talk hunting Roosevelt Elk during the rut. I have known Shannon for a few years now and he has always been willing to take a moment to answer my elk questions. His advice is rarely indecisive and usually includes the mantra of "Keep pushing in on him, if you can get closer". This was my first time meeting Cory and I see why they have become such a lethal pair. Hunting Roosevelt Elk, is what they do. These guys are hardcore hunters. Chasing monster elk in the coastal forests of Oregon and Washington. Their methods are targeted to draw out the dominant herd bull. These guys go after elk with a tenacity that is fun to watch. Their hunt films are raw, real, and genuine just as these guys are in person. Also their approach to hunting elk is unique and has a thoughtful perspective that is different from many in the industry. If you can take a moment to view the video version of this on our Youtube channel. We recorded this while sitting in Shannon's house surrounded by Roosevelt Elk mounts. It is an impressive sight. As you listen to the podcast you will understand why he has taken so many big bulls over the years. Check out the Youtube video as well. https://youtu.be/kmWCRIK3B8c
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we visit with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions and we talk Roosevelt Elk hunting. I remember when I bought my first Angry Spike Productions DVD more than 10 years ago. I bought the DVD from good friend Cory Miller, who was in a couple of those early DVDs. I remember watching these guys call-in elk, on over the counter tags in thick coastal, rain forest country--Shannon Mobbs can hunt Roosevelt elk. He’s a Roosevelt killing machine and his wall at home displays some amazing coastal bulls, which I have included in the video version of this podcast. He’s also been blessed to shoot a Rocky Mountain Bull Elk, on a draw tag, that scores just shy of 400 inches. Shannon knows how to hunt elk. He’s been consistently getting it done in the elk woods for multiple decades. On this podcast he shares his opinions and experiences calling-in elk. It’s a fascinating show whether you’re into Roosevelt elk hunting or not--in many ways, an elk, is an elk, is an elk. Angry Spike Productions quit producing DVDs a few years ago. So, we got them set-up online and now you can digitally download their old DVDs on a link on the Gritty Bowmen Website. Just go to grittybowmen.com and click the VHX link and follow the prompts from there. Type in the coupon code ‘GRITTY’ at checkout and you can get 50% off each DVD download. It’s a cool thing. I tremendous much respect for anybody who attempts to film and produce video content from their hunts--these guys have done it. The footage is a little old but the call-ins and the bugling are solid. I learned a lot from watching these guys hunt on these old films. Listen to this podcast and see what you think. And then go download one of their videos from our website and enjoy some raw and real roosevelt elk hunting. And hopefully, these guys will produce a new film this year--get on Instagram and follow them at AngrySpikeProductions. And feel free to send them your questions and to ask them about producing a new and updated elk hunting film for 2016--rumor has it they’re sitting on tons of great elk hunting video.
