Derrick spends 3 days with Jody Smith Guide Service hunting a blacktail deer deep in the logging country of Western Oregon just 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Jody's family moved to the area as German immigrants in the 1840s via the National Land Claim and he was born and raised hunting and loving firearms with his father and grandfather. Jody said he hosts a lot of clients who are trying to complete their hunting slams and still need a blacktail deer or a Roosevelt elk. He's a hunting or fishing guide year round based on the seasons and specializes in Roosevelt elk, blacktail deer, and Rio turkey as well as salmon, sturgeon and smallmouth fishing on the Umpqua River. Derrick and Jody talk about how times have changed just since the 1970s and how 5th grade Jody bought a rifle from an older fellow on the school bus for $25 and then had his principal hang onto it for him until he could pick it up for his school bus ride home. Towards the end and in true Oregon fashion, Derrick and Jody get rained on as Jody tells heartfelt and emotional stories about learning gun safety from his grandfather as well as his most memorable client who was dying from cancer and was blessed with a successful Roosevelt elk in the most perfect of circumstances. Derrick lived in western Oregon for 2.5 years and never had the chance to harvest a good representation of a blacktail buck. This trip fulfilled that dream and Jody and Derrick share the adventure. . . . . .On The Horizon episodes brought to you by:Horizon FirearmsTexas Ammunitioniota OutdoorsStiller22 Creedmoor Join us on InstagramJoin us on FacebookVideo version available on Horizon Firearm's YouTube Channel On The Horizon podcast: Founder of Horizon Firearms Derrick Ratliff gathers guests to share and discuss outdoor industry expertise and memorable hunting adventures. Angry Spike Productions is a group of friends and family that share a common passion for pursuing wild game with archery equipment in the great outdoors. In the mid 1990's they began filming their Roosevelt archery hunts and from that ASP was born. In 2005 Shannon, Brad, Cory and Ken sat out to make a video of their elk hunts. At the time there were no videos focusing on the majestic bulls of the Pacific Northwest rain forests. They released their first video in 2006 titled “Season 2005”. The viewer response was amazing and over 10 years later ASP IS STILL PURSING THE BULLS OF THE COASTAL RANGES IN OREGON AND WASHINGTON. This week we return to Humboldt County and speak with rancher Peter Bussman. In our last episode we spoke with Jason & Dean Hunt along with Justin Mora about ranching in Humboldt county with an emphasis on managing the areas Roosevelt Elk population. On that trip I had the pleasure of meeting peter Bussman, a rancher that was on hand to give biologist Carrington Hilson and I access to ranch property in an effort to find elk, which we did. In talking with Pete, I found that he comes from a long line of ranchers in the area, created a redwood tree farm in blue lake and volunteers his time to cook for large events over wood fire. We toured his cattle operation in the Arcata, drove to Blue lake to see his tree farm, and then cooked enough new york strips (he did ALL the cooking) for nearly 200 people and enjoyed them for dinner at the historic Carson Mansion in Eureka as guests of the Ignomar Club.
In this episode we venture to Arcata, just north of Eureka California and home to Cal Poly Humboldt to discuss ranching a few miles from the Pacific. Every environment presents a unique set of problems whether it be weather, invasive or native wildlife or urbanization. Ranchers in Arcata deal with all of the above. The reason for my visit was to talk about Elk. Specifically, Roosevelt Elk. These elk are endemic in the area but for a long-time, populations have waxed and waned. More recently the population has thrived... the Elk don't have many existing predators, are hard on fences and are prolific breeders. The Elk prefer the same feed that cows do and have the ability to access it.The Elk's size, population and reproductivity makes management difficult. In this episode we speak with ranchers Jason & Dean Hunt and Justin Mora about how they deal with the Elk and about what systems they have to manage them. We also speak with Carrington Hilson from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife who is tasked with gathering data on the Elk population in Humboldt County which should aid in better management practices in the future.
On this episode of the show, Kevin and Pete are joined by Nolan Osborne. When it comes to rugged mountain hunting you will not find a person on the planet with more experience than Nolan. When Nolan is not guiding for Stone sheep in the rugged mountains of British Columbia, he co-host's the Beyond the Kill podcast and is the editor of the Journal of the Mountain Magazine. Beyond Nolan's knowledge and experience he is a guys who can get the job down regardless of the environment and challenges are in his way. We get into a great conversation about how Nolan hot into the industry, some of his experiences as a guide and he shares his story of his unbelievable Roosevelt Elk. Title: Blacktail Hunt Recap Show Notes: My two nemesis, the Blacktail Deer and the Roosevelt Elk. I've had 4 tries at the Roosevelt, the only one I shot we never found. But after all these years of chasing blacktail, I finally decided to just shoot the first buck that made me happy. I have had plenty of opportunities to kill a Blacktail. I probably could have killed a buck of the same caliber I got this year, 3 times already. This year I said no more holding out; I'm taking the shot. I am talking with Mr. Phoenix Shooting Bags himself, Anthony Stallone. I am giving him my recap of our hunt in a California A-Zone. So last year, I kept going after these big bucks, so different from what everyone else at camp was seeing. I'd get to 100 yards, but I couldn't get that 20 yards to get the ADR pin. I've been way closer, too, and missed the shot. Blacktail Deer do not have that Mule Deer behavior. They don't really ever run out in front of you and look back. We were hunting in July, which is odd in and of itself. You're not expecting them to be that big. It's hot. It's dry. The terrain is a steep hillside covered in oak variants. Those big oak trees drop leaves and it's so loud. You're walking and it's crunch-crunch-crunch. You make too much noise and they're gone. The mornings seemed to be the most stalks. The Blacktail were out under the trees feeding. About 20 minutes after first light, they start making their way to their first bed and lay down for about an hour. As soon as the sun is gonna be hitting them, they're gone to their permanent bed for the day. That bed is impenetrable. They go in this crazy thick brush in a clump of trees. It is impossible to get in at them. When I would use that first tree line, they'd hear me 500 yards away and bolt. It's like, how the heck am I gonna get them? So I started treating them more like antelope, using the terrain as my cover, but I couldn't get any closer than 100 yards. Alright, fast forward to this year. It's the same thing, I am seeing big bucks, 110 to 130 range, 3 by 3's and 4 by 4's. The first morning, I found these bucks basically bedded out in the open, just under the shade. I knew that as long as I could get close enough, I could get an open shot on them, but as soon as the sun hit they'd be gone. Sure enough, that's what happens. The third or fourth morning, I spot this beautiful 5 by 4, sporting 140 inches. I know in my head I'm not gonna get there in time. I get over there and I am almost on this bench and then a steep grassy cliff. Well, I get over there like 50 yards away, and this doe comes over and just stares at me like 15 yards away and I run out of time. It was the same thing over and over, just running out of time every time. The next day after all day of the same story. We have like an hour of light left. We decided to head back for an early night and start fresh the next morning. Well, we're in the Jeep and I see this buck. I'm like woah, woah, stop. I get down in the trees and he spooks back; a doe in the trees busts me and they go. So whatever, we just drive down again and there are three bucks in the road. I decided I wanted to shoot this cactus buck. I did actually shoot at him, but by the time my arrow got to him, he was gone. So I go back and we're in the Jeep. AGAIN, another buck, this time up on a ridge eating a berry patch. That's it, I hop out again and I am stalking my way up under the cover of these blackberry vines. I'm thinking this is it, it's so quiet because I am using the trail the deer have been taking. I get up there in the bush and I am 30 yards away. Draw back, shoot. He runs about 40 yards and drops. BOOM! I got my deer. What's Inside: Getting my first Blacktail. Stories of our hunt in a California A Zone. The 30,000-Foot view of our trip. Main Topic: Memorial Day Weekend As I release this we are celebrating Memorial Day here in the US. I’ve shared a few pics in the facebook group from the time about 12 years ago that I visited Arlington National Cemetery, where my great-grandfather is buried. I’ve got a few others in there of the tomb of the unknown soldier and the like. It’s a sobering place that is worth your time for sure. My great-grandfather was a chaplain in the army. And there’s two really interesting things about him. First off, he followed his son, my grandfather, into the army. They both served during WWII. And secondly, as a chaplain, he was the spiritual leader for many a soldier. One of them was my wife’s grandfather. My great-grandfather actually performed my wife’s grandfather’s baptism. In our faith tradition, that’s kind of a big deal. And when I first met my wife’s grandfather he just couldn’t believe the connection. He talked my ear off for hours about the Army and how he knew my great-grandfather. It certainly is a small world sometimes. I just wanted to take some time to honor the many people, past and present, who dedicate their lives to their nation, their people. It’s truly a sacrifice, and whichever nation you’re from, if you are currently serving or have served in the past I suspect your nation is grateful for your service. I know I certainly am very grateful for the service of our people. Main Topic: Vancouver Island Today I have another Latitude Regular joining me, Drake Dyck, welcome to the show! Drake, tell us a bit about yourself. Before highschool I just shot with a little 110 film camera, but when I got to HS, I acquired a 35 mm Canon AE1 Program Thoughts behind this camera, what new possibilities it opened for me. The Canon was a great camera for me, as it was fairly easy to use and had a decent light meter. I quickly learned the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and film speed (ASA) by trial and error. I had a 50 mm and 75-200 zoom lens. The longer reach of the zoom lens really gave me a lot more options and made shooting much more exciting. My older brother and I took a night class in B&W darkroom photography, and afterwards I became the photographer for the school newspaper and yearbook (just the fun photos, not the professional headshots) Every year, for about five years running, I would go to the Abbotsford International Airshow to photograph the planes… At the time that was my photography obsession, I even made it to the Whidbey Island Airshow one year. Unfortunately, with many moves over the years, my photos and negatives from this time have all disappeared I joined the Canadian Armed Forces, where I spent 25 years I spent most of my career as a MP and I served at several bases across Canada, as well as on tours in the middle east at an airbase, in Afghanistan, and accompanying a frigate in the Persian Gulf / African coast. I also had the chance to accompany a frigate to Bulgaria and Romania… we had some extra time in Romania and I even got out to the Bran castle (which the castle in Dracula is said to have been based upon), in Transylvania unfortunately, most of the time, I only had my phone to take photos One of the few things directly related to photography during my MP career was some crime scene photography training, which was part of a Criminal Investigations course I took Photography ‘dry spell’ About eight years ago, I got a T3i, which is when I again became serious about photography, and have since moved to a 6d Mk ii I also renewed my interest in film, and have developed several rolls of B&W 35mm & 120 film I have several old cameras, most of which are nothing special, but my favourite right now is my Hasselblad 500 EL/M unfortunately it has been stuck in the shop for a couple months because of Covid-19 Renewed Interest in Photography I retired from the CAF a couple years ago and now work for the provincial government I try to get out for photography locally as often as I can, and on at least one trip to a more distant location (requiring air travel) per year and several others that are longer/farther than just a day trip Current situation Israel (the scenery, history and people are all fantastic), Romania (a beautiful country with diverse landscapes and wonderful people) & Seychelles (Wow. An island paradise. I was blown away by its beauty and the friendliness of the people) Three destinations I would love to return to on a photo-trip would be: Vancouver Island It is located on the west coast of BC, Canada, directly to the north of the Olympic Peninsula in Wa. State. It’s the largest island in the Pacific Ocean east of New Zealand. At 31,285 km² (12,079 mi²), is 3x bigger than the island of Hawaii and bigger than all the Hawaiian islands combined It’s 460 km (290 mi) long by 100 km (62 mi) wide population about 870,000, about half of which live in greater Victoria area on the south end of the island Most of Vancouver Island is covered by a Temperate Rain Forest, with some huge trees, although only a small percentage of the Old Growth, which contains the giants, remains Black bear, Cougar, Roosevelt Elk, deer and many other animals are common here. There are some distinct species/sub-species to the island as well, such as the Vancouver Island Marmot and Vancouver Island Wolf (which prey on fish and other sea life) There are national and provincial parks spread across the island, as well as many regional and local ones, that all offer great opportunities for photography. I’ll start with a few locations on the south end of the island, near where I live (pictures to give you a bit of a better idea of what they’re like): Specific Destinations Botanical Beach - A Provincial Park, at the west end of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, with incredible seascapes, unique tide pools, great trails Fairy Lake - there’s a campsite at the lake, but it’s not in a park. It has a unique ‘bonsai’ tree in middle of lake, growing out of an old stump Big Lonely Doug (2nd largest Douglas Fir in Canada) & Avatar Grove (Gnarliest tree) - not in a park, but protected as of 2012 Sombrio Beach - Part of Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, it has a nice beach, but the star is the “hidden” waterfall Mystic Beach - near the east end of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, a nice beach with interesting trails, a waterfall and marine life Sandcut Beach - Part of Jordan River Regional Park, has a low, wide waterfall at the beach Sheringham Point Lighthouse - built in 1912, the government declared it “in excess of requirements” in 2003 and the community stepped in to preserve it. In 2015 it was made a Heritage Lighthouse and is being restored by a local group Mary Vine Falls - waterfall in the Sooke Potholes Provincial Park (the Potholes themselves are amazing) Whiffin Spit Park - a 1.25 km (¾ mi) long, narrow spit with a great walking trail with many birds, seals, sea lions and even occasionally whales All this is only the south west corner of the island, but I think it would be a great start. I could add places like East Sooke Regional Park, which is a huge area with many trails and lots of sea access, Roche Cove, Matheson Lake and others, which are between Sooke and Victoria, but that could be a lot for one episode. Perhaps some of the following would make for good additional topics, or we could do a quick overview? There are a lot of great “must see” photography opportunities in and right around Victoria as well, especially for other photography interests, like the BC Legislature (Parliament Buildings), the inner harbour, the 2nd oldest Chinatown in North America, Hatley Castle (seen in several movies), Fort Rodd Hill (historic fort and lighthouse), Craigdarroch Castle, Beacon Hill Park, and the Buchart Gardens. Then there are many areas on the central part of the island, some of which I have explored, and others are high on my list, especially a bunch in Strathcona Park (lots of mountains, lakes and some caves). There’s even a few areas on the far northern end of the island that are excellent for photographers. I’ve made a couple trips to Cape Scott (about a seven hour drive), where there is a huge diversity of scenery and some great sea stacks. Tip of the Week. Drake: When planning to photograph seascapes or anything around the ocean, make sure to check the tides in the location you are going to. Often there can be considerable differences between locations that are not too far apart. I use the iOS app “Tide Charts Near Me” https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/tide-charts-near-me/id957143504 It’s also available in the Google Play store as “Tide Charts Free” https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.SeventhGear.tides&hl=en_CA I find this handy to know how much time I will have before being cut off by the incoming tide, or when the best time to go to explore the tide pools. On this episode I sit down with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions (ASP) for short. We talk hunting Roosevelt Elk during the rut. I have known Shannon for a few years now and he has always been willing to take a moment to answer my elk questions. His advice is rarely indecisive and usually includes the mantra of "Keep pushing in on him, if you can get closer". This was my first time meeting Cory and I see why they have become such a lethal pair. Hunting Roosevelt Elk, is what they do. These guys are hardcore hunters. Chasing monster elk in the coastal forests of Oregon and Washington. Their methods are targeted to draw out the dominant herd bull. These guys go after elk with a tenacity that is fun to watch. Their hunt films are raw, real, and genuine just as these guys are in person. Also their approach to hunting elk is unique and has a thoughtful perspective that is different from many in the industry. If you can take a moment to view the video version of this on our Youtube channel. We recorded this while sitting in Shannon's house surrounded by Roosevelt Elk mounts. It is an impressive sight. As you listen to the podcast you will understand why he has taken so many big bulls over the years. Check out the Youtube video as well. https://youtu.be/kmWCRIK3B8c

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we visit with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions and we talk Roosevelt Elk hunting. I remember when I bought my first Angry Spike Productions DVD more than 10 years ago. I bought the DVD from good friend Cory Miller, who was in a couple of those early DVDs. I remember watching these guys call-in elk, on over the counter tags in thick coastal, rain forest country--Shannon Mobbs can hunt Roosevelt elk. He’s a Roosevelt killing machine and his wall at home displays some amazing coastal bulls, which I have included in the video version of this podcast. He’s also been blessed to shoot a Rocky Mountain Bull Elk, on a draw tag, that scores just shy of 400 inches. Shannon knows how to hunt elk. He’s been consistently getting it done in the elk woods for multiple decades. On this podcast he shares his opinions and experiences calling-in elk. It’s a fascinating show whether you’re into Roosevelt elk hunting or not--in many ways, an elk, is an elk, is an elk. Angry Spike Productions quit producing DVDs a few years ago. So, we got them set-up online and now you can digitally download their old DVDs on a link on the Gritty Bowmen Website. Just go to grittybowmen.com and click the VHX link and follow the prompts from there. Type in the coupon code ‘GRITTY’ at checkout and you can get 50% off each DVD download. It’s a cool thing. I tremendous much respect for anybody who attempts to film and produce video content from their hunts--these guys have done it. The footage is a little old but the call-ins and the bugling are solid. I learned a lot from watching these guys hunt on these old films. Listen to this podcast and see what you think. And then go download one of their videos from our website and enjoy some raw and real roosevelt elk hunting. And hopefully, these guys will produce a new film this year--get on Instagram and follow them at AngrySpikeProductions. And feel free to send them your questions and to ask them about producing a new and updated elk hunting film for 2016--rumor has it they’re sitting on tons of great elk hunting video.
Take a few minutes out of your day and enjoy a 5 minute video tour of the Lake Quinault region of Olympic National Park. We start with a look at the historic Lake Quinault Lodge. Manager Dave Huber gives us a look around and describes some of the more interesting aspects of the lodge's past. Next, we catch up with Roger Blain, a former ranger with the Park Service, he now provides interpretive tours of the area with the lodge. Roger leads us through the Maple Glade trail, a short nature loop near the lake that contains quite a lot of green hanging moss and lush sword fern. Along the way, we catch sight of an Osprey, Roosevelt Elk, and even a couple Banana Slugs. The video for this production was shot in early June, 2007.
