This episode is all about blacktail deer and blacktail hunting. Since moving back to the sunshine coast, I've had time to focus on the elusive Blacktail deer. After 10 seasons of poking around these woods, I finally learned enough blacktail hunting lessons that a hunt came together for me. In this episode, I got a chance to catch up with my friend Travis Kayes. Travis is a relatively new hunter that came through the EatWild program. He is dedicated and passionate about chasing Blacktail deer near his home. He has been the most consistently successful blacktail hunter in my community. I know how hard blacktail hunting is, so I was curious to talk with Travis about his journey to becoming a successful Blacktail hunter. This is podcast is a ton of fun as Travis and I trade notes on what we learned about Blacktail hunting. I would argue that the Blacktail deer is the most challenging of the deer species to harvest here in BC. They typically maintain low-density populations throughout their habitat, they don't leave a lot of sign, so they are hard to find. They live in thick, noisy habitats so it's almost impossible to keep from bumping them. I hope you enjoy this podcast. And good luck finding your Blacktail secret spot! As always this podcast is brought to you by our friends at West Coast Kitchen Canada. They offer a 10% discount code on all of their nourishing backcountry food. Use the discount code EATWILD. Hunting deer in the late season, the sun is coming up, it's a cold frosty morning in western Oregon. Outdoor writer Troy Rodakowski had a muzzleloader across his lap when he saw the cougar. It turned and began to stalk him. This is what happened next. You can catch Troy Rodakowski on Instagram at @troyoutdoors
We talk about the North American Model of Wildlife Management and conservation and the importance of journaling. If you're a lifelong hunter or you plan to be, I encourage you to keep a journal. Leland Brown is the non-lead hunting education coordinator for the Oregon Zoo, based in Portland Oregon, educating hunters about non-lead options. In this interview we talk about a study he has initiated. If you tagged a big game animal this year, you can participate. Click on www.bit.ly/ammoperformance.
Pure Oregon. Get a little insight into how to hunt the black bear with Elke Littleleaf Kirk, a native fishing guide from the Warm Springs Reservation. This episode starts with Elke's wife Alysia being stalked by a black bear. Then we hear about a bear hunt on the Reservation. We're talking bear hunting and then we talk Bigfoot and hear a few of Elke's personal encounters and what he has learned from the elders. In this episode we talk to Levi Mallory, a whitetail fanatic from the Show Me State and he shows us how to rethink our deer hunting spots. I recorded this episode in a garage while cutting up a monster of a buck. This animal probably weighed 275 pounds-plus and the other deer scattered when it showed up. If you hunt whitetails or blacktails and want insight into habitat and small property management, listen to Levi.
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, there was always this speculation about Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Hairy Man and what it was, and if it was. And it seems like hunters and loggers are the ones that have the most encounters and are the most likely to NOT talk about it. Ron Morehead started researching in the early 1970s out of a hunting camp in the High Sierras. We talk to Ron about where the journey has taken him and his latest book The Quantum Bigfoot.
Just back from a four-day workshop and her first-ever deer hunt in Texas, Amy Patrick had one day to get home and then we headed to southern Oregon for a blacktail deer hunt. Patrick is policy director for the Oregon Hunters Association. After she made a well-placed shot with a borrowed 7mm-08, we sat down to talk about her work and her first deer hunt. Her story might inspire you to invest in yourself.
Just back from the desert and looking forward to several more deer hunts this season, we sit down with returning guest Brice Stanley to talk about mule deer hunting. How to be in the right place at the right time in The Magic Hour.
You know you should be cleaning your rifle. But how often. And when? And where? And why? We have a quick conversation with Marcus Kahn of Modern Spartan Systems who provides some insight into range day and rifle cleaning.

A lot of people think deer hunting when they set out to become hunters. But it didn't used to be that way. A couple three generations ago people hunted small game like rabbits and squirrels and pheasants and grouse as they learned their skills in the woods and the desert. And now it is September and a new generation wants to know how they can get started hunting. Today we talk to Leland Brown about his journey as a hunter and how to get started putting real food on the table. Leland Brown also works with the Oregon Zoo, educating hunters about non-lead options, so we talk rifles and ammo, too.
Hunting season is in the air. We sit down with Joel Strimling and try to ask and answer some questions from when we were new hunters. Can a person really be authentic about how they put food on the table? How do we get started as hunters if we don't have a dad or an uncle that hunts? Who do we ask? Is there a better way to do this? Are there clubs to join? Good magazines to read? Can you really just buy a hunting license and go into the woods and hunt? The questions provoke a lot of thought, and the answers just might help a newcomer to the sport.
In this episode we sit talk to Michael Swoboda of Swoboda Charters about one of my favorite deer hunts of all time, hunting Sitka blacktail deer on Kodiak Island. This is one of the great deer hunts and a great way to do it is on a boat-based hunt where every day starts at the beach.

Title: Blacktail Hunt Recap Show Notes: My two nemesis, the Blacktail Deer and the Roosevelt Elk. I've had 4 tries at the Roosevelt, the only one I shot we never found. But after all these years of chasing blacktail, I finally decided to just shoot the first buck that made me happy. I have had plenty of opportunities to kill a Blacktail. I probably could have killed a buck of the same caliber I got this year, 3 times already. This year I said no more holding out; I'm taking the shot. I am talking with Mr. Phoenix Shooting Bags himself, Anthony Stallone. I am giving him my recap of our hunt in a California A-Zone. So last year, I kept going after these big bucks, so different from what everyone else at camp was seeing. I'd get to 100 yards, but I couldn't get that 20 yards to get the ADR pin. I've been way closer, too, and missed the shot. Blacktail Deer do not have that Mule Deer behavior. They don't really ever run out in front of you and look back. We were hunting in July, which is odd in and of itself. You're not expecting them to be that big. It's hot. It's dry. The terrain is a steep hillside covered in oak variants. Those big oak trees drop leaves and it's so loud. You're walking and it's crunch-crunch-crunch. You make too much noise and they're gone. The mornings seemed to be the most stalks. The Blacktail were out under the trees feeding. About 20 minutes after first light, they start making their way to their first bed and lay down for about an hour. As soon as the sun is gonna be hitting them, they're gone to their permanent bed for the day. That bed is impenetrable. They go in this crazy thick brush in a clump of trees. It is impossible to get in at them. When I would use that first tree line, they'd hear me 500 yards away and bolt. It's like, how the heck am I gonna get them? So I started treating them more like antelope, using the terrain as my cover, but I couldn't get any closer than 100 yards. Alright, fast forward to this year. It's the same thing, I am seeing big bucks, 110 to 130 range, 3 by 3's and 4 by 4's. The first morning, I found these bucks basically bedded out in the open, just under the shade. I knew that as long as I could get close enough, I could get an open shot on them, but as soon as the sun hit they'd be gone. Sure enough, that's what happens. The third or fourth morning, I spot this beautiful 5 by 4, sporting 140 inches. I know in my head I'm not gonna get there in time. I get over there and I am almost on this bench and then a steep grassy cliff. Well, I get over there like 50 yards away, and this doe comes over and just stares at me like 15 yards away and I run out of time. It was the same thing over and over, just running out of time every time. The next day after all day of the same story. We have like an hour of light left. We decided to head back for an early night and start fresh the next morning. Well, we're in the Jeep and I see this buck. I'm like woah, woah, stop. I get down in the trees and he spooks back; a doe in the trees busts me and they go. So whatever, we just drive down again and there are three bucks in the road. I decided I wanted to shoot this cactus buck. I did actually shoot at him, but by the time my arrow got to him, he was gone. So I go back and we're in the Jeep. AGAIN, another buck, this time up on a ridge eating a berry patch. That's it, I hop out again and I am stalking my way up under the cover of these blackberry vines. I'm thinking this is it, it's so quiet because I am using the trail the deer have been taking. I get up there in the bush and I am 30 yards away. Draw back, shoot. He runs about 40 yards and drops. BOOM! I got my deer. What's Inside: Getting my first Blacktail. Stories of our hunt in a California A Zone. The 30,000-Foot view of our trip. Welcome to The Outdoor Narrative, my podcast about fishing, hunting and other wild pursuits in British Columbia and western Canada.I'm Robert Koopmans and this week I'm talking with Ed Henczel, who joined me on a bowhunting trip to Texada Island in search of Columbia blacktail deer. Texada Island is a small island located off the Sunshine Coast out of Powell River. It's considered one of the Gulf Islands, and like many of these islands, it has an abundant population of blacktail deer. The deer were introduced decades ago and with no natural predators, their numbers have taken off. The island is rugged and mountainous and covered in thick rainforest. It is a much different environment than the fir and grassland hillsides I'm used to walking in search of mule deer in the Interior. Ed and I ventured there for a few days over the New Year break, hoping to take advantage of a one-month bow-only season from December 15 to January 15. The season offers a liberal harvest limit of three deer a year, and two of those deer can be does. We had hoped to spend a week there, but unfortunately, Mother Nature intervened, and the arrival of a massive winter storm changed our plans. We left a day earlier than expected, hoping to outrun the advancing weather. We chatted about the time we had on the island — as well as some interesting new hunting regulations being proposed by the BC government — as we waited for a ferry in Langdale en route to the Lower Mainland. Thanks for listening to this week's episode. If you want to share a thought, send me an email at info@theoutdoornarrative.com. I'm Robert Koopmans, thanks again, and we'll catch you next time.

Sitka Blacktailed Deer are not as well known as some of the other species of deer, but they are just as magnificent. They are native to the dense rainforests of Southeast Alaska and Northern BC. I was first introduced to them when I spent time on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. After some research I heard about Jim Baichtal. Jim has spent a lot of years pursuing these magnificent deer as a hunter but he has also been involved in researching them as a scientist. Very few people know more about Sitka Blacktailed Deer than Jim. He shares some of that knowledge with us on this podcast.

On today's episode we talk about hunting Kodiak Island for Sitka Blacktail Deer. Heath Segeberg hunted Kodiak Island for the the first time this year and did well. Many of us have wanted to do this hunt so I was excited to hear his stories. We also compare Kodiak to Prince of Wales Island, which I am very familiar. We talk about logistics of getting to the island. We talk about how they used a transporter to get around the island. Taking advantage of the rugged public land that has little access.
Join Nate, Jerry, and Aron as they talk about Backcountry Gear, Blacktail Deer, and Bringing people into Traditional Bowhunting. Please support the people who help bring this to you. Grizzly Stik Sawyer 3 Rivers Archery ... Recurve and Longbow Experts

Many of us dream of pulling off an Alaskan hunting trip. This week, we talk with our friend Dwayne Spiess from New York about his advice and experience with hunting Sitka Blacktail Deer on Kodiak, Afognak, and Raspberry Islands. This is a challenging, exciting and affordable Alaskan hunt which is comparable in price to a guided mid-western whitetail trip. Dwayne breaks down his trip and offers some practical and useful advice for hunting strategies, gear and getting your meat home. Dwayne and his partner were on Afognak Island just a couple of weeks after the Meateater Crew's epic bear tree incident last fall. Did Dwayne and his partner encounter a bear? On this episode I sit down with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions to talk about their recent Sitka Blacktail hunt in SE Alaska. This was a true DIY adventure hunt, on public land with over the counter tags. They picked a remote island in Tongass National Forest and tackled the Alaskan wilderness head on. They worked through a few obstacles of course. Things like steep mountains, rugged terrain, biting bugs, and one lost quiver of arrows. But I'll let them tell the story…… Enjoy the podcast.
On this episode we speak to Sam Sawyer about Sitka Blacktail Deer on Prince of Wales Island, in Alaska. We talk about the techniques he uses to break down the landscape so he can focus his time targeting mature bucks during the rut. Prince of Wales Island is part of Tongass National Forest so most of the island is public land. We talk primarily about rifle hunting but archery hunting is an option for the avid hunter. With a little research and some work on the ground anyone can go there and have a successful hunt for this unique species of deer. https://youtu.be/-ASzXVGsMtI
David Brinker is one busy guy. He's the Marketing Leader for Sitka Gear and he's also a singer and a song writer. Dave resides in Bozeman Montana and is a transplant from Oregon. Since we're all from Oregon and cut or teeth hunting Roosevelt Elk and Blacktail Deer, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about the hunting traditions we grew up on. Dave is currently releasing his new country music album Made Out West on Friday April 20th 2018. Listen in for how to get your hands on some of his music! Dave's love for the outdoors and conservation is expressed through his music. You can typically find him performing his music at conservation gatherings and celebrations! Dave Brinker Itunes
