New Mexico Non-Resident Opportunities for Big Game Hunting – Chad Nelson, NMDW

Backcountry Rookies

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 23, 2026 64:47

This week on the Out of State Hunter Podcast, host Chad Ryker sits down in Santa Fe with Chad Nelson (Licensing Operations Manager for New Mexico Department of Wildlife) to break down non-resident hunting opportunities in New Mexico and how the 2026 draw works at a high level. They explain New Mexico's three draw pools (resident, outfitted, and unguided non-resident) and why guided/outfitted applicants typically have better odds than unguided non-residents. The episode covers species-by-species opportunity—highlighting New Mexico's reputation for trophy elk, solid mule deer and Coues deer potential, plus premium but low-odds hunts for bighorn sheep and pronghorn. They also clarify the E-Plus private-land elk system, including the difference between ranch-only vs unit-wide authorizations and why it can get expensive. For unique “only-in-NM” experiences, they dive into oryx, ibex, and Barbary sheep, with ibex noted as one of the toughest hunts around and Barbary offering accessible OTC options in certain areas. Finally, they stress doing your homework on hunt codes, tag numbers, and deadlines, staying on top of harvest reporting requirements, and watching for potential rule/proclamation changes heading into 2027. Key Takeaways No preference points in New Mexico — every applicant has a true random chance each year. Outfitted pool (10%) usually offers better odds than unguided non-resident (6%), but requires a signed contract and added cost. Avoid party applications, especially when tag numbers are low — it can dramatically hurt your odds. Tag numbers matter — small quotas can make some hunts essentially impossible for non-residents. E-Plus private land elk licenses create opportunity, but prices are set by landowners and can be expensive. New Mexico offers rare, unique hunts like oryx, ibex, and Barbary sheep, with some OTC options available. Do your homework: verify hunt codes, watch deadlines (March 18), complete mandatory harvest reporting, and stay alert for 2027 rule changes.   New Mexico Wildlife Website - https://wildlife.dgf.nm.gov Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nmdeptwildlife/ Previous Podcast - https://open.spotify.com/episode/3Bv8ihJiFnn1NmOGEhwC3T?si=IPYnRFq7RVKxrqW3StAKXw   Out of State Hunter Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/outofstatehunter/   #outofstatehunter #huntnewmexico #newmexicohunting #elkhunting #huntthewest

Guest: Alonzo Ayala, co-owner of El Durangueño Ranch in Durango, Mexico. Episode Overview: Larry Weishuhn broadcasts from the impressive El Durangueño Ranch, nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains of Durango, Mexico. Sitting fireside with co-owner Alonzo Ayala, Larry explores the history, conservation efforts, and hunting opportunities of this vast, 57,000-acre property. Originally established in the mid-1960s by Alonzo's father and partner Jack Brittingham (who purchased it from American settlers originating from Colorado), the ranch has evolved from a cattle operation into a premier destination for wildlife conservation and fair-chase hunting. The conversation highlights the ranch's unique high-altitude habitat (8,500+ feet), home to thick pine forests and diverse wildlife. Alonzo details the ranch's renowned Gould's Turkey population—frequently producing record-breaking birds—and its thriving Coues deer herd, which Larry describes as exceptionally healthy with abundant young bucks and fawns. The pair discuss the ranch's strict native-species-only policy, which led to the reintroduction of Elk to their historic range in Durango after a 100-150 year absence. Beyond hunting, Alonzo shares the ranch's commitment to community and education. Through their summer camp program, they host urban youth and underserved local children, teaching them ranching skills, astronomy, and environmental stewardship, guided by the charismatic "Chief Kalako." Key Topics Discussed: History of El Durangueño: How a partnership between Alonzo's father and Jack Brittingham transformed a cattle ranch into a conservation haven. Gould's Turkey: The ranch's reputation for world-class turkey hunting, including holding top records in the National Wild Turkey Federation. Coues Deer: The high density and excellent health of the local "Grey Ghost" deer population, attributed to careful habitat management and water distribution (36 dams and multiple troughs). Elk Reintroduction: The successful effort to bring Elk back to the Sierra Madres using top-tier genetics from the U.S., now resulting in a self-sustaining herd of over 400 animals. Conservation Philosophy: A dedication to native species (no exotics), low-fence hunting, and long-range shooting ethics. Community Outreach: The ranch's educational summer camps that reconnect city kids and support local underprivileged youth with nature and ranch life. Birdwatching: The ranch's incredible biodiversity, including species like the Mexican Jay, making it a prime spot for birders. Larry has long loved hunting Coues whitetail, known as "The Grey Ghost of the Desert".  In this episode Larry talks about hunting the fabulous El Durangueno Ranch in Durango, Mexico's Sierra Madre Mountains.  The late and great Jack O'Connor considered the diminutive Coues whitetail subspecies North America's Greatest Game Animal  Larry certainly agrees.  Larry discusses differences between Coues and "regular" whitetails, hunting techniques, and many more topics, including describing him taking a great buck during the last moments of his hunt.  Great information, good stories, and even an invitation to go hunt Coues deer in the future with Larry. In this solo episode, host Larry Weishuhn records from the high-elevation El Durangueno Ranch in Durango, Mexico. He recounts a successful hunt for Coues deer (often called the "Gray Ghost of the Desert") and reflects on the history of the ranch, the wildlife conservation efforts there, and his excitement for the upcoming DSC Convention. Setting: Located in the Sierra Madres of Durango, Mexico, at an elevation between 8,500 and 9,000 feet. History: Owned by Alonso Hayala and his family for 67 years. The property spans approximately 57,000 acres (plus adjoining leases). Wildlife: The ranch is known for its biodiversity, including a massive population of Gould's turkeys, reintroduced Elk (which have flourished into a large herd), and the primary subject of this hunt: Coues deer. Larry describes the Coues deer as a unique, small subspecies of whitetail known for their grey color, large ears, and ability to vanish into the landscape. The Guide: Larry hunted with a local guide named "Zordo." Despite a language barrier, they communicated effectively through hand signals and shared hunting instincts. The Encounter: Day 1: They spotted a massive buck late in the evening but lost the light and could not take a clean shot. Day 2: They returned to the same canyon. After a long hike and glassing session, they spotted the buck chasing a doe at roughly 400 yards. The Shot: Larry set up for a shot across a canyon. At 300 yards, he took the shot when the buck paused behind some brush. The Result: The buck ran a short distance and fell. Upon recovery, Larry realized it was a "monster" Coues deer with a wide spread and long main beams, though it had unfortunately broken off its left main beam. Larry estimates it would have scored in the 120s (a trophy class for this species). Larry detailed the specific equipment he used for this successful hunt: Rifle: Mossberg Patriot with a 20-inch barrel. Caliber: 7mm PRC. Ammo: Hornady Precision Hunter, 175-grain ELD-X bullet. Optics: Stealth Vision binoculars and a 3-18x44 scope. Patreon: Larry promoted his Patreon page ("MRWHITETAIL"), where he offers exclusive video content, tips on wildlife management, and giveaways. DSC Convention: He expressed excitement for the upcoming convention in Atlanta, where he looks forward to reconnecting with friends and listeners. "I'm 78 years old this year... and I'm still going at it strong." — Larry Weishuhn "It is the most accurate, deadly bullet I have ever put through a rifle." — Larry Weishuhn (referencing the Hornady ELD-X) Learn more about your ad choices. Staying outside an animal's awareness buys time, reduces mistakes, and creates higher-probability shots. This is not about extreme distance. It is about efficiency and control. The back half of the episode shifts into gear and optics. In this episode, Larry Weishuhn sits down in the wilds of West Texas with Jeff Johnston of the NRA and American Hunter. Recorded on a sprawling 40,000-acre cattle ranch near the Mexican border, the two discuss the unique challenges of hunting the "fan-tailed" Carmen Mountain Whitetail in the high desert. Larry and Jeff swap stories about the rugged terrain, the necessity of quality optics, and the diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert. The conversation then turns to a passionate discussion about the vital importance of the Second Amendment, the role of the NRA, and why unity among gun owners is critical for the future of the United States. [00:00] Intro & Sponsors: Larry introduces the show from the high-elevation desert of West Texas. [02:00] The Landscape: Discussing the "spine-filled" vegetation and diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert (Javelina, Mule Deer, Elk, Black Bear, and Quail). [04:15] The Carmen Mountain Whitetail: Larry explains the biology of this unique subspecies—smaller than a Coues deer but with a tail the size of a standard whitetail. [06:30] Hunting Stories: Jeff recounts his successful hunt and Larry jokes about "double drop tines." Mentions of Fred Eichler's success in camp. [09:45] Tactics & Gear: The importance of "glassing" in vast country. Discussion on optics (Stealth Vision), rifles, and the necessity of flat-shooting calibers (.270, 7x57, 6.5) and accurate ammo (Hornady). [14:20] The Second Amendment: A serious pivot to the state of gun rights. Larry emphasizes why the 2nd Amendment is the backbone of American freedom. [16:00] The NRA's Role: Why the NRA remains the strongest lobbying organization due to its membership base, not just money. [18:30] Call to Action: Larry urges listeners to write handwritten letters to legislators and maintain membership in gun rights organizations. [21:00] What's Next: Larry discusses his upcoming hunts in Oklahoma and Texas. "Everything here, for the most part, has got spines, stickers... if you look at our hands, you can probably see all the scratches." — Larry Weishuhn "To me, anything that scores 85 or better is one heck of a deer." — Larry Weishuhn on the Carmen Mountain Whitetail "Without the Second Amendment and our ability to own guns, this country will not exist in a relatively short period of time." — Larry Weishuhn This episode is brought to you by: DSC (Dallas Safari Club): Conservation, Education, and Advocacy. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/645  Presented By: Togiak River Lodge, Waters West, Skwala, TroutRoutes Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors    In today's episode, we're diving deep into the world of spey fishing and bow hunting with George Cook, the man who brought spey fishing and spey rods to the United States. Renowned for his expertise, George travels the globe, collaborating with some of the biggest brands in the fishing industry. Having graced our podcast three times, he has shared invaluable insights on spey fishing, Chinook fishing, stillwaters, and more. George will update us on the current state of spey fishing, discuss the latest trends in Chinook fishing, and share his optimism about the future of steelhead fishing. But that's not all—his passion extends beyond the water to the fields, where he is also an accomplished hunter. He'll be offering tips and tricks for archery and hunting this season, including how to successfully stock a buck and the three most important factors in casting a spey rod. Episode Chapters with George Cook on Bow Hunting 2:20 - George gives us an update since we had him on the podcast. He had a bow season in North America last fall and killed his all-time biggest meal in the winter. 6:20 - We talk about updates on Sage rods, particularly focusing on the latest models which were released last winter. George explains that the new series includes a variety of models ranging from five to ten weights in spey and seven to eight weights in switch rods, which he refers to as "baby spey." 12:52 - George advises on how to improve your spey game. He suggests that it depends on the person's location, particularly highlighting that there are many skilled instructors on the West Coast. He names notable instructors like Travis Johnson in Oregon, John Hazlett in Medford, and Charles St. Pierre in Tacoma, as well as De Hogan who offers traveling seminars. George emphasizes the importance of getting professional instruction, comparing it to other precision activities like golf and archery. 16:00 - We shift the conversation from spey fishing to hunting. George recounts his extensive experience in both fields. He started fly fishing at age 11 but only began hunting in college at Washington State University, which he describes as a prime location for pheasant hunting. His deer hunting career began slowly, with his first successful hunt occurring in his senior year. 19:28 - George describes a typical summer fishing, using the Deschutes River as an example. He explains that fishing usually starts early in the morning, from dawn until about 10:30 to 11:30 AM, when temperatures are cooler. During this time, anglers can use floating lines or intermediate leaders with traditional flies like the green butt skunk or streetwalker. 26:32 - He shares his transition from rifle hunting for 30 years to bow hunting in 2014. He explains that rifle hunting had become less challenging and more about the pursuit of larger game. Bow hunting, on the other hand, provided a fresh start and presented new challenges, such as needing to get much closer to the prey, which requires significant skill and patience. 32:37 - George highlights the accessibility and convenience of bow hunting, contrasting it with rifle hunting, which often requires more time and logistical planning. He appreciates the simplicity of stepping outside his home and being able to practice archery almost immediately. He also provides an overview of the different types of bows available for those new to the sport, such as traditional longbows, recurves, compound, and self bows. He mentions that most bow hunters in the U.S. use compound bows and endorses Bowtech, a company known for its high-quality bows. 36:50 - We delve into introducing children to hunting, particularly focusing on the appropriate type of bow for young kids. George explains that there are entry-level bows designed for very young children, similar to toy bows with rubber stopper arrows. He then mentions more advanced options from Bowtech, which has a wide range of adjustable pull weights from 30 to 60 pounds, making it suitable as kids grow and gain strength. 43:00 - George recounts successful hunts in various states, including Oregon, Montana, South Dakota, and Mexico. He emphasizes the versatility required for hunting different types of deer, such as whitetails and Coues deer, using methods like tree stands and ground blinds. 44:06 - He highlights the numerous hunting opportunities available throughout the year, with early and late seasons in states like Oregon, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, and Alabama. 48:18 - We talk about the intricacies of archery elk hunting. George explains that September is the prime time for hunting elk because it coincides with the rutting season when elk are very vocal and can be located by their calls. This period offers archers a better opportunity to get close and take a quality shot. Although challenging, bow hunting for elk and deer provides unique experiences and opportunities that are less available during rifle hunting seasons. He also gives some key tips for successful elk hunting. 1:01:57 - He describes how bow hunters practice for longer shots with antelope but aim to get as close as possible to deer. This involves meticulous planning and movement, often requiring stealth and environmental factors like wind and noise to avoid spooking the animal. He emphasizes the importance of knowing the deer's location and anticipating its movements, including understanding the deer's bedding habits and adjusting strategies accordingly. 1:06:26 - I ask George about his gear preferences. He emphasizes the importance of tools like OnX for identifying different types of land and the necessity of investing in quality optics such as binoculars and rangefinders, which he considers as critical as the hunting bow itself. He mentions some brands like Vortex and Leupold. 1:10:27 - Between hunting for mule deer and white-tailed deer, he prefers the former but mentions that he hunts more white-tailed deer due to availability. George then shares an impressive achievement: he is the only person to have hunted mule deer in all 17 states where they are native, completing the feat in 2019 in Oklahoma. 1:13:49 - We talk about his cats. One is a 22-pound main coon named Buddy Kitty and another small female named Wittle. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/645

Crazy Coues Deer Story with Dave Maher Show Notes:   I just had a crazy experience with a recent client on a Coues deer hunt, and Dave Maher's here to help me unpack it all. Dave's been on the show before, and he's my go-to guy when it comes to gun stuff. My client was physically challenged, and I hunted with him for three days. I found several opportunities, but unfortunately, we couldn't get to any fast enough.    I also had Ryan with me, and he later found a good buck. Even though my client could shoot and he had a good setup, we were too far away. I decided to try to get as close as I could, but the best I could do was 700 yards. All of a sudden, the buck comes out of a tree, and my client hits the buck's shoulder. He took a second shot, and the buck shot straight up into the air and dove forward into some trees, but he was still alive!   We moved in a little closer to wait for the buck to do something, and he eventually stood up. My client shot again, but missed. At this point, we don't have another shot, but the deer got up again. Ryan got his eyes on him, and the buck walked into some trees. From here, we go on a crazy chase to find this deer and he eventually goes down for good. Here, Dave gives his analysis of the hunt and his take on why this buck was so hard to take down.  What's Inside:   A crazy story from a recent Coues deer hunt. Dave's analysis on the hunt. Title:  Coues Deer with Fred Bohm Show Notes:   Fred Bohm's from the Tucson area, and he joins me here to talk about coues deer. He's originally from New Jersey but headed west to Colorado after college. He's been an Arizona resident for about a year and a half but has been hunting in the state for over 10 years. Fred's father taught him how to hunt when he was younger, and he became obsessed with bow hunting early in the game. He got into coues deer hunting after snagging an OTC tag.   Fred's known for his photography of his hunting escapades and has had a passion for it since he was a teen. He loves to inspire others, and I've always been a fan of his photos. Coues deer hunting season is coming up soon, and here, I pick Fred's brain on his favorite hunting tips and tricks. We kick things off by talking about the difference in behavior in coues deer compared to eastern deer. Fred shares the characteristics you can use to your advantage to score.   Fred's hunted a lot of different habitats throughout Arizona, and he shares his favorite spots. He shares his top rules for stalking coues deer and how to approach it. Fred and I also discuss his three most critical factors to contribute to hunting success, how to find the right areas, recommendations for equipment, and more. Scoring Coues Deer with Jay Scott   Show Notes: Even though I know how to score deer, I don't feel confident telling people how to score Coues deer. So I brought Jay Scott on for an expert's opinion on how to score them on the hoof.   For the novice or intermediate hunter, Jay recommends that you get as many antlers or horns in your hands as possible with a measuring tape. A lot of scoring just comes down to experience, so you'll need to look over a lot of deer before you can get a better understanding of what a deer is on sight.   Measuring mistakes can add up quickly. If you're a half-inch off on everything, then that'll distort your final number. For hunters who are used to hunting in the East or the Midwest, scoring the Coues deer will be a different experience. When you break down deer, there are 4 main parts of the scorecard.   Point length Main beam Mass Spread   For most people, they talk about spread like it's the most important factor in scoring, but for Coues deer, it is not. You want to be looking for a minimum length of 15-inches on the points and then everything else builds around that.   You can follow Jay on Instagram for some practice seeing pictures and comparing your guess to his. If you'd like one of his charts that will simplify the scoring process, you can email Jay at: JayScottOutdoors@gmail.com.     What's Inside: The difference between Midwestern and Western point language, and why that matters. For a buck to be a hundred, your point length category needs to be in the 15-inch range. When beams wrap around the front, the size is going to naturally increase. How white antlers are going to distort your perception of size.     Mentioned in this Episode: Days in the Wild on iTunes Days in the Wild on Podbean Phoenix Shooting Bags Save 20% with code: johnstallone Days in the Wild Bushnell.com Save 15% on everything at Bushnell with code: STL02 Primos.com Jay Scott Outdoors podcast Jay Scott Outdoors on Instagram   Short Description: How accurately can you score antlers from a picture? Jumping The String With Randy Ulmer Throwback   Show Notes:   Randy Ulmer joins me today to talk about the dreaded “jumping the string.” What does it mean if a deer jumps the string? Something triggers the deer to jump when an arrow is shot; and moves before the arrow can get to it. Today we discover a few theories about just what causes deer to jump the string.   When an arrow is shot, deer can collapse their front legs and drop their chests in preparation to spring, and the arrow ends up missing them. This is a lot easier if their heads are down to start with. An alert deer is much more likely to jump than a non-alert deer, and older age class bucks are much more likely to jump than younger bucks. Older bucks have been pursued more, by other hunters and predators, so they are more sensitive. Young bucks jump as well, just not as often. Interestingly, when targeting a deer in a group, the other, non-targeted deer aren't as likely to jump as the targeted one.    What causes a buck to jump? There are a couple theories. Some people think it's the sound of the bow shooting the arrow, and another camp of people think it's the sound of the actual arrow. Distance might also play a role. The closer you are to the deer, the more likely they are to detect you. The closer the deer, the louder the bow and arrow are, and the more likely the target deer is to jump.  The kind of arrows you use makes a big difference as well. Thinner, slower, stiffer arrows make less noise, so deer are less likely to jump.    While frustrating, there are things you can do to cut back on the number of bucks that jump the string. Randy likes to use the same bow for every animal because he has a great feel for it. Put shock absorbing devices on the bow to mute the sound. Use a very small diameter arrow.  You can't avoid the problem completely but you can implement some of these to avoid losing that prize buck.    What's Inside: What is the distance sweet spot when it comes to bow hunting? Which deer are mostly likely to jump? The importance of researching deer in the area you want to hunt.    Mentioned In This Episode: Phoenix Shooting Bags Save 20% with code: johnstallone Days in the Wild Primos.com Save 15% on everything at Primos with code: STL02   Short Description: There is nothing more frustrating than finding a prize buck, loading your bow, taking a shot, and then seeing the deer “jump the string.” Many, many bucks have been lost this way. Interviews With The Hunting Masters - Big game Hunting podcast

Title:   Ryan Lampers Show Notes:   I had the chance to catch up with Ryan Lampers at Hunt Expo. I love the expo since it fits in perfectly with my Javelina season plans. Ryan and I start our conversation by talking about Coues deer and I recap my Megatron buck story from back in December. We get into chasing Javelina and Coues and trying to see them in the grass and Ryan talks about his trip south of the border. The last time I was in Mexico, I cut my hand trying to cross a fence and it was a pretty tough hunt. I did get a buck and also saw a jaguar!   Ryan's hunted in Arizona for a number of years, but he's fairly new to Mexico. He doesn't do a ton of border hopping since it can be pretty intimidating, especially when you're carrying rifles. This past January, Ryan went down to a ranch, and he says he saw way more Coues deer in Arizona. They felt lucky to turn up a couple of bucks a day and there were very few does. He was high in the mountains, and it wasn't as open. Even though it was tough at times, Ryan and his crew had a great time and they did wind up with some good ones.    Ryan and I talk about rifle hunting and chasing mule deer and the challenges that come up. Sometimes the challenge is more with dealing with the weather and elements and locating deer than the actual shot itself. To put more of a challenge on the hunt in Mexico, Ryan put limitations on which kind of deer he was after. We chat about the tag system and different units and how desperation can result in wounded deer.  We also talk about getting “the moment of truth” right, getting the perfect range right before taking a shot, and Ryan's current bow setup.
