Shavonda Gardner is an interior designer who creates spaces that are highly beautiful but also highly functional—maybe that has to do with the fact that she lives in a 1,200-square-foot bungalow with her wife, two kids, and a 120-pound Great Dane named Callie. So it makes sense that her blog, SG Style, brims with inspirational ideas. Listen in as she shares her tricks for maximizing small homes and why she'll never have all-white walls. In this episode we speak to Melanie Gnau - a small living expert. Melanie teaches about creating a sustainable and beautiful home through DIY, shopping second hand, gardening and living mindfully. Her blog A Small Life and social media sharing highlight how to make small, but life altering changes to how we live - that can benefit us as individuals, but also the planet as a whole. We also talk about her Isleta Pueblo heritage, how neurodiversity can be a consideration of functional design and even how cleaning can create compelling content. We talk about the different aspects of minimalism - beyond the aesthetic. Melanie also shares how she balances the different aspects of her business and how the personal and political aspects of sustainability can intertwine, creating a meaningful life that benefits ourselves, our community and our planet. We recorded this conversation before the devastating floods in Australia and the invasion of Ukraine. Seeing horrific events like these and knowing that there are other global events receiving less media attention really shines a light on what a privilege it is to have a safe, comfortable home - even though it is a human right, it is not something we can take for granted. We hope that this conversation can both help us all create a functional and nurturing environment within your own home, and enhance our capacity to help others - maybe through volunteering, contributing to grassroots fundraising, political lobbying or making ethical purchasing choices. One of the huge benefits of ‘living small' is that it can free up energetic and financial resources that enable us to have a bigger positive impact. Today on the show we have Shavonda Gardner, founder of SG Style, a design and lifestyle blog. She was on the path to have a long career in the military until she made the pivot into the world of interior design. One driving factor in her decision to start a design blog was the fact that she didn't see herself represented in that world. She has a strong affinity for color, for going bold, and for making the most of your space, no matter the size. (Although, she has big love for small spaces.)In this conversation, we talk about the steps she took to pivot from a career in the military into becoming an interior designer – and the pivot she had to then make again after the recession. The story that her home, The Cottage Bungalow, tells about her and her family. How she and her family lived through their kitchen renovation, while living in their home. And, the sweet story surrounding who was (and still is) her biggest influence and inspiration behind the design of her kitchen.Website: SG StyleInstagram: @sgardnerstylePinterest: SG StyleFacebook: SG StyleABOUT THIS PODCAST For more information about this episode, or other podcast episodes, visit Hunker.com/podcast.This podcast is produced by Laurie Gunning Grossman.Being Home With Hunker is recorded and mixed at Night Shift Audio.Theme music by Jonathan Grossman.Show art designed by Mory Men. Size matters, and when it comes to houses, I swim against the trend of bigger is better. Over the last several years, I've come to realize that I love a smaller, more intentional space versus a big sprawl. Today's guest, Shavonda Gardner, of sgstyleblog.com is my sister in the downsizing journey and small space living mindset. In this episode I share my story, some pros and cons of small space living, and interview Shavonda for her fresh, interesting perspective. Many of you have probably seen Shavonda Gardner's home on Instagram, on her blog or from the One Room Challenge. Her bold, eclectic style has had a big influence on those of us who follow her on social media. But today, we get to hear a more personal side of Shavonda. I love how she and Naomi have really taken their family values into consideration when choosing where and how they want to live. I think that's my favorite part of this interview. But, of course, we also talk about lots of fun things like tile, wallpaper and color. And, being a master gardener, she also gives us her top three house plants to start with if you're a beginner or just not having luck keeping those babies alive.
