online personalities share offline realities. each week, caroline interviews a variety of guests known in the online realm about something less known in their day to day lives.
I’m not exactly sure how this happened so quickly, but here we are, at the one year anniversary of Out of Line. 52 weeks of conversation with some of the most honest + inspiring folks out there. For the last episode of the year, I decided to do something a little different.. I took a handheld recorder with me to my fourth Burning Man--which is an annual event in northwest Nevada. For one week, 70,000 people gather in one space to create a temporary city, including camps, and about 300 pieces of art. Burning Man is an experiment in community and art, influenced by ten main principles: "radical" inclusion, self-reliance, and self-expression, as well as community cooperation, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy, and leaving no trace. One of my favorite parts about Out of Line has been the final question I ask each guest -- what do you have in common with every human on planet earth? What does humanity have in common? And so, I took my tiny recorder around Burning Man with me, and asked this same question to some of the people I encountered there. Before I play what I heard, I’ll add a ‘thank you’ for journeying through this year with me. Your DMs and emails and notes and iTunes reviews have carried me and kept me going. I do this for you, so that you feel empowered to ask anything, and, so that you have a reminder of the range of unseen battles each of us may be facing at any given time. Thank you for being here. I’m going to be taking a mini break now. I want to regroup, get some feedback from you, and come back for year 2 even better and stronger. Make sure you subscribe, and follow @outoflinepodcast on Instagram to find out when the feedback questionnaire is up, and, when the new season launches, too. I’ve already started recording the new episodes, and I can tell you, things are gonna get juicy. For now, Caroline signing off with the reminder to put it in your mouth, but don’t swallow... Jamie Lee Finch is an intuitive healer, sex witch, poet and relationship guide between humans and their bodies. She believes our bodies have a language, and that that language is our mother tongue. Trauma, she says, in any form -- including toxic experiences with fundamentalist religious belief -- is responsible for breaking down our ability to communicate successfully with our bodies; and any sort of illness or imbalance, dysfunction or disease is our bodies’ frustrated attempts to connect with and communicate to us. The work that Jamie does is in reassociating people with their bodies, the language their body is speaking, and the voice their body is speaking with; it is deep reconciliation healing work on a mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical level. Jamie is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and her practice is fully booked until 2019. Clearly, there’s a demand for this type of reconnection with our bodies. This is the first 'special' episode of Out of Line, where we explore what it feels like to be an American right now. The current political climate has created a great source of anxiety for many -- for others, there is intense grief experienced personally each time there is another mass shooting or drastic and inhumane immigration measure taken by the government. The angst is high, and yet, so are the levels of activism. More Americans are registering to vote, and choosing to use their voices to speak up about issues that matter to them. So how do we process our own emotions and experience in a way that will make us more effective citizens? How do we ensure that we are responding from a grounded place, and not just reacting and resisting. Afterall, as the saying goes, What you resist persists. This episode is a wild experiment in exploring these very questions. I, (Caroline) only got the idea to create this episode on Tuesday of this week, and created a call to action on my @teamwoodnote Instagram story, inviting guests to call in and record their own experiences. In a short 2 hour window, so many people called in that I could only be more sure that this conversation needed to happen. What you'll hear: first, some of your own voices. If you called in and answered one of the questions, (What does it feel like to be an American right now? What are your self care practices like to support you in coping? And, what role does social media play in your activism and/or mental health?) THANK YOU. I felt your anger, your embarrassment, your sadness. I also felt your trust in me -- allowing me to piece together this collective experience. Thank you. Next, I talk with two professionals who share their own takes on what is happening in the world, and, strategies on supporting yourself with health first. Some of my doctor friends have told me that 50-70% of their patients have mentioned an increase in anxiety and depression over the past 18 months, and so this needs to be talked about. Whatever your experience, and whether you have felt like you could share it with others or not, you are not alone. x Guests: Anna Kunnecke is a life coach that works to empower soulful women in finding their strength. Her business, Declare Dominion, is based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where she lives with her husband and their 5 kids. Anna was generous enough to hop on a Skype call with me and chat about strategies to process what’s going on in America and in our bodies, so that we can be more effective activists. Dr. Brittany Busse, is an occupational medicine specialist, and the Medical Director of Telehealth for Kura MD, Inc. Part two of Amy’s interview is a look behind the curtain of social media.. Part two: after chatting with Karen Doolittle about money, and how to know what you're worth, Caroline asks Karen a series of questions about her social media practices--and, about what social media strategists look for when they're hiring 'influencers'. Karen Doolittle is a Los Angeles based photographer. After a feature on the Instagram blog a few years ago placed her in the spotlight and resulted in a greater social media following, Karen found that pairing her love of photography and social media by getting a job with an advertising agency was her ultimate dream. She now works as a social media strategist for Davis Elen in LA, and came over to my place where we chatted about money and how to know what you’re worth.
