This is the first Alumni edition of the podcast. A literal leadoff hitter steps into the batter's box for the debut edition. Corey Hoch was a redshirt senior under first-year head coach Spanky McFarland, providing leadership in a transition year of 1998 while enjoying the best year of his JMU player experience. Hoch leans on his Diamond Duke buddies even today as you learn in this podcast. Batting second is Emilly Schutt, who played field hockey for the Dukes and is continuing her education at the University of New England in Maine, studying marine biology.
In Part 2 of this 2005 interview, maintenance Sgt. Ed "Smoky" Stuever describes with remarkable clarity events from 60 years before. These include his experiences in the veterinary detachment of the horse cavalry, chaperoning Spanky McFarland, towing trucks onto Utah Beach after their engines sputtered out, getting drunk on mirabeille (white lightning) and making his captain pull guard duty, repairing tanks at night by the light from gun flashes, and helping a German woman and her three children escape from Russians near the end of the war. The episode is long and I've dispensed with the usual narrative, so I'll say it now: Thank you for listening to Myfatherstankbattalion. I'm Aaron Elson, your host.
Everything that ain't tied down is getting "rebooted"! Where are the original ideas?! Sitting in drawers unmade because YOU (yes, you!) would rather go see superheroes and CGI lions at your local bijou! Okay, that might be hyperbole. Might, I tell you. In this episode, the SSN Crew wades through the plethora of announcements for "new" takes on "Saved By the Bell," "Set it Off," "The Craft," "Punky Brewster", and "The Boondocks." We give our takes on which of these (if any!) will make it. Plus - we celebrate Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation 1814" turning 30, little Spanky McFarland running around in blackface 80 years ago, dive into Netflix's "Big Mouth" (!), and hope that Dobie Gillis can get his errant cousin Shane Gillis together. The man behind The Florida Project (one of the year’s best movies) joins Leonard and Jessie for a candid look at his career, which began on public-access television in Manhattan. His last feature, Tangerine, caused a stir because it was shot entirely on iPhones…but it’s the content, not the cameras, that makes these movies so good. (His latest was photographed on 35mm film.) Sean shares the story of his “overnight” success and explains why he thanks Spanky McFarland and the creators of the Little Rascals at the end of The Florida Project.
