Dennis is joined via Zoom and telephone by writer to talk about his new book It Seemed Like A Bad Idea At The Time: The Worst TV Shows In History And Other Things I Wrote. The book attempts to answer the question, "How did this project happen?" about such so-bad-it's-delicious shows like The Star Wars Holiday Special, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Paul Lynde Halloween Special as well as the feature films Can't Stop The Music and Ice Pirates. Bruce shares stories about working with Florence Henderson and Robert Reed on The Brady Bunch Variety Hour and reveals the famous socialite who was the Number 2 choice for "Fake Jan" on the show. Bruce, who was adopted as a baby, also shares the story of how, just in the last four years, DNA testing led him to discover a whole new birth family who have become a big part of his life. Other topics include: dealing with the Mormon elders while writing for Donny and Marie, what is was like to work with such 70's TV icons like Bob Hope, Robert Urich, Paul Lynde, Rip Taylor and Sid and Marty Krofft, why he he's happy to host benefits, the secret to his career longevity and the pact that he made to himself early in his career that "no one day should be like the other day."

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Grab some confetti and settle in to meet Rip Taylor -- The King of Confetti! A flamboyant slinger of "rim shot" jokes, Rip initially punctuated his act with exaggerated crying when his gags bombed. Ed Sullivan was a fan (he booked him over 20 times) and dubbed Rip "The Crying Comedian". Much later when bombing on the Merv Griffin show, instead of crying Rip was moved to tear up his joke cards and toss them in the air like confetti. The audience went nuts and from then on it was confetti instead of crying -- and a career that saw long runs in Las Vegas, many game and talk show appearances, and supporting film roles including Indecent Proposal (a rare dramatic turn) and Wayne's World (a great comedic turn). As always find more clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Rip? The New York Times once described Rip as a cross between Captain Kangaroo and Liberace, wound up to warp factor 7. Pretty good description! https://youtu.be/50pFJU99wUw Ed Sullivan gave Rip his big TV break and had him back over 20 times. Here's an early Rip performance sans mustache and with crying, not confetti, as the shtick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rm4g_ZGx-c Rip was over the top, so in 1978 when producing madman Chuck Barris had an idea for another show that would do for beauty pageants what the Gong Show he tapped Rip to be the host. So back from the glory days of shlock tv -- here's a bit of the $1.98 Beauty Show! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF7yrbl_X6E

This guy was crazy, way out there. And he'd be the first to admit that. You wouldn't know it, but Rip Taylor worked as a Congressional page and served in the Korean War. During the war he performed stand-up comedy for the troops. After his years of military service, he did nightclub comedy. He'll explain how he got his start in television. He became a regular in Las Vegas, opening for Frank Sinatra, Ann-Margret, Judy Garland and Sammy Davis Jr. He appeared in episodes of the Monkees and the Brady Bunch. You have seen him on “Hollywood Squares,” “The Gong Show,” “Will and Grace,” and “The Match Game.” He also hosted “The 1.98 Beauty Show.”  Rip was on Broadway and made several appearances in the movies. He appeared as himself in “Wayne's World 2” and was Demi Moore's boss in “Indecent Proposal.”

This movie inspired a plethora of other stories throughout the 80's. Mount those horses and journey to a forgotten age with Enjoy Stuff   News Transformers Optimus Prime has been turned into an epic LEGO set Christopher Walken joins Dune: Part 2 Get ready to learn half the battle when GI Joe gets a special screening courtesy of Fathom Events In a couple years we will get a follow up to This Is Spinal Tap Congratulations to Jovial Jay as his essay about 45 Years of Star Wars Expanded Universe Fiction is published in Bare-Bones #10 Make sure to check the boys out as guests on Podcast Stardust discussing Attack of the Clones What we're Enjoying Now that Jay has revisited Attack of the Clones, he couldn't help but watch Revenge of the Sith too. Plus, he finally completed the story of LEGO Star Wars, The Skywalker Saga. Now he can get back to work. Shua watched Mike Myers secret society series The Pentaverate on Netflix. It was pure Mike Myers comedy with some fun jokes and thoughtful themes.     Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Be sure to check out Jay's articles on Retrozap.com. This week he stretches his muscles to keep up with Jean Claude Van Damme in the 1994 flick Timecop. And make sure to check out MCULocationScout.com for some Moon Knight locations and soon, more Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.    Enjoy movies! Conan the Barbarian made his live action debut in 1984 with a John Milius production of the same name. This was not Schwarzenneger's first film, but it definitely put him on the road to stardom. Despite some of it's dated effects and slow pace, it is a beautiful, fantasy epic.    There were a bevy of Sword and Sorcery films after the success of Conan. But we saw a few in a similar genre before. Disney films like The Sword in the Stone (1963) and the Harryhausen creations like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and its sequels and Clash of the Titans (1981).    Marc Singer brought a different type of barbarian to the fantasy world. His character of Dar in Beastmaster (1982) had the ability to connect and communicate with animals that helped him defeat the evil sorcerer played by Rip Taylor.  Oops! I mean Rip Torn.    Fantasy lends itself to such a wide variety of movies such as The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) and a rare, early Disney PG movie called Dragonslayer (1981). These kept the interest in these types of mythical worlds.    Excalibur (1981) was a medieval tale of King Arthur that brought the ancient tale to the modern screen. It also inspired some cool artwork from Shua's father. Fire and Ice (1983) featured rotoscoping animation from Ralph Bakshi. These are just a tiny sampling of this genre that was so popular during the 80s. There were so many more!   Are you a fan of Sword and Sorcery films? What type do you like? Did you read all the way to the bottom? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Now we are dead!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. To say a lot happened in pop culture this week would be an understatement. The music world collectively mourned the loss of Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins (5:38). A day later, cultural discourse was dominated by Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars (:28). This week on Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen recap the week and name the first album that disappointed them (19:34).Speaking of disappointing albums, this week's main segments are about the new LPs from Red Hot Chili Peppers (28:47) and Machine Gun Kelly (41:09). RHCP's Rick Rubin-produced Unlimited Love dropped this week, the band's first album in six years. Indiecast's thoughts on the mid-tempo album can pretty much be summed up in two words: It's fine. Machine Gun Kelly is an artist that's more used to getting flack from critics, and it shows on his album Mainstream Sellout. It's his second pop-punk album thus far and both Steven and Ian think he might be better than his detractors believe. In this week's Recommendation Corner (51:22), Ian shouts out the anticipated new album by Pup, The Unraveling Of PupTheBand. Steven mentions his interview with The Gaslight Anthem's Brian Fallon ahead of their 2022 reunion tour.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 83 and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. "The National Institute of Forensic Medicine continues the medical studies to achieve total clarification of the events that led to the death of Taylor Hawkins," the report said, and the attorney general's office will continue to investigate his cause of death in a "timely manner."
