“I told my mama, ‘I want to take my dad to school,' and she said, ‘Pick a man you like.' I said, ‘Richard Pryor.' She said, ‘All right, that's your daddy.'” That's how Spanky Hayes kicks off a raw, hilarious, and deeply Detroit story in his Detroit is Different interview. From dodging gang members in LA while wearing a bloody borrowed T-shirt, to his Cuban roots in Havana where “it's like being in 1984,” Spanky brings humor and heart. His reflections on Hollywood hit just as powerfully: “To be a star, you gotta be likable—people gotta want to be around you for 30 days straight on set.” He opens up about the ups and downs of holding deals, the pain of seeing his original crew's idea become Wild 'N Out without the proper credit, and how he helped build it from the ground up. “We didn't get the deal, but Nick did—and he kept his word.” Spanky also breaks down how the internet changed comedy forever: “It's not about talent anymore—it's about who's posting the most.” Despite the challenges, he's still committed to the craft: “I'm the Morpheus for Detroit comedians in LA. I've got the keys to the game.” With stories from backstage with MC Lyte to acting dreams sparked by Juice, Spanky blends street wisdom, comedic hustle, and cultural commentary in a way only a Detroiter can. Send us a textMike "Spanky" LaValliere pulls no punches as he takes us behind home plate for a candid look at baseball through a catcher's eyes. From his days with the Cardinals to becoming a Gold Glove winner and fan favorite with the Pittsburgh Pirates, LaValliere's journey reveals the hidden complexities of one of baseball's most demanding positions. With refreshing honesty, Spanky tackles the evolution of catching techniques, expressing serious concerns about today's one-knee approach: "I don't understand the catching that's going on right now... at the lower levels, if you're on a knee, you're not doing any service." His breakdown of what made him successful defensively offers invaluable insights for players and coaches alike. The conversation turns particularly fascinating when LaValliere pulls back the curtain on catcher-umpire relationships in the pre-analytics era. His stories of umpires expanding the strike zone for mouthy batters and the importance of game management over rigid strike zones highlight just how dramatically baseball has changed. When asked about his relationship with umpires, LaValliere's insider perspective is priceless: "If one of the hitters was a little mouthy, you get a little tap... move a little further outside."Perhaps most compelling are LaValliere's raw, emotional reflections on the Pirates' magical 1990-92 division title runs, culminating in the heartbreaking 1992 NLCS loss featuring Sid Bream's infamous slide. Even decades later, Spanky maintains: "I still believe that I got that back leg before," and reveals he couldn't watch the replay for fifteen years afterward. His stories about teammates like Barry Bonds ("the best player I ever saw, bar none") and Bob Walk offer delightful glimpses into clubhouse dynamics from a golden era of Pirates baseball.Whether you're a catching enthusiast, Pirates fan, or simply love authentic baseball stories from someone who lived them, LaValliere's blend of technical knowledge, humor, and heartfelt reflection makes this episode essential listening. I so want to connect with my hearers when I preach or speak. Yes, one has a Message -- the One-Way Love of God embodied in the Compassionate Christ. But if it doesn't really connect with the listener -- with the sufferer! -- it is not able to do its job. J.B. Priestley (d. 1984), who had basically lost whatever faith he had been exposed to as a child, spent a lot of years looking for... something. He would gladly have capitalized "something" (i.e., Something). In 1960 Priestley wrote specifically about the decline of Christianity in the West. He wrote that the only way the "Church" could 'come back' -- which he would have welcomed given the cultural despair and nihilism he observed everywhere around him -- was to get through to the unconscious. Christianity's original, great and contagious strength had been to reach individuals in their depth/s. I agree with JBP. For many years Mary and I have listened to sermons that are sincere, sound theologically, and well prepared exegetically. Yet we often leave the service untouched, un-addressed, un-healed. As Herr Kaesemann said once, after listening to a sermon during a conference at Yale Divinity School: "Es gibt keine Anrede!" In other words, the Word has to address me in the deeps. The preacher's "deeps" need to be calling out to mine (Psalm 42:7). This cast draws on Priestley's "Presence of the Absence"; a John Wyndham paperback from 1953; and -- wait for it -- Spanky & Our Gang. The last track, from 1969, is IMO pure perfection. Oh, and "Out of the Deeps" is dedicated to Mary Zahl, whose recent talk to the Women of the Advent in Birmingham, entitled "The Things That Remain" (https://talkingbird.fireside.fm/400) is as fine as anything I have ever heard her present.
