It's Thanksgiving! In the spirit of the holiday, Carolyn and the cast have invited their family members to the show for a #ThanksgivingWithBlackFamilies edition of The C-Dubb Show. First, they discuss the latest round of Hollywood sexual assault allegations featuring George Takei, John Grisham, and Clarence Thomas. Then, they jump over to end of the year awards and nominations with Colin Kaepernick and Blake Shelton. There is a new edition of "History Lessons with B. Willis" as she tells the unwashed version of Thanksgiving. Finally, there is a Petty Games edition of Family Feud featuring #thanksgivingwithblackfamilies themes, which is more white Thanksgiving vs black Thanksgiving than an actual game of Family Feud, but ehhh...that's Petty Games for ya! Disney's highly anticipated (and heavily promoted) streaming service is finally here! All this plus Dwayne Johnson trying to Dwayne Johnsonify one of DC Comics' most murderous supervillains, whether Vin Diesel's Bloodshot movie will lead to someone playing Magnus: Robot Fighter with their thighs out, and the largest collection of classic Disney movie reviews that has ever been given (and probalby ever WILL be given) on this (or likely any) podcast ever! 25 years ago, Atlanta pop/R&B royals Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas rose through the (literal) ashes of controversy and scandal to release one of the best-selling and best-loved R&B albums of the decade. In this special episode, the SSN Crew, and special guest Tim from the Kuroverse Corporation, do a track-by-track retrospective on TLC's sophomore album, "Crazysexycool." We cover behind-the-scenes stories, the group's origins (and its forgotten original "C", Crystal Jones), and how indeed you can sell ten million records and go broke the same year. Plus: reviews of the latest installment of "Watchmen" and Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," a breakdown of Byron Allen's lawsuits against Comcast and Charter, Mo'Nique suing Netflix, and Elizabeth Banks' "Charlie's Angels" failing to take flight. In this episode, the SSN Crew indulges in two big discussions about two very different films celebrating anniversaries with new productions. First up, we discuss Stephen King's classic horror novel "The Shining," the subject of a classic film celebrating its 40th anniversary with a sequel, "Doctor Sleep." Can this new entry following an adult Dann Torrence mentoring a Black teenage girl live up to the legacy of the Stanley Kubrick classic? Then, we dive back in time again - and under the sea - to explore the dawn of the Disney Renaissance with the making of "The Little Mermaid." That film celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special ABC-TV screening of the animated musical featuring live-on-stage performances of its songs. How'd that work out for them? All this, plus a follow-up review of "Bigger" on BET+, reviews of "The Good Liar", HBO's "Watchmen", a discussion of what Paramount can/will do now that "Terminator: Dark Fate" and "Gemini Man" have flopped, and more - including a preview of a potential spin-off show, "Say Something Sexy!" SHOW NOTES: 0:00:00: Say Something Real: Reviews ◦ Doctor Sleep (Film, 2019) - no spoilers! ◦ Love Jones (Film, 1997) ◦ Sparkle (Film, 1976) ◦ Bigger (TV, Season 1, BET+) ◦ Popeye the Sailor, The 1940s: Vol. 3 (Short films, 1948-1949) ◦ Riverdale (TV, The CW) ◦ The Good Liar (Film, 2019) ◦ Deon Cole: Cole Hearted (TV comedy special, Netflix) ◦ The Blacklist (TV, NBC) ◦ Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? A long time ago (last week), in a galaxy far, far away (Burbank), a media conglomerate announced a sprawling new steaming platform full of some of their most popular movies and TV shows, as well as new productions. No, it isn't Disney - it's Warner Bros., and, unlike with the Mouse House, there's far more hurdles to overcome. Can HBO Max overcome branding issues and a high monthly price to make new "Green Lantern." "Boondocks," and "Little Ellen" (!) productions successes? In this episode, the SSN Crew discusses HBO Max's content presentation, as well as Lori Loughlin staring down the barrel of a 50 year prison sentence, the Internet's best friends - "Game of Thrones" show runners David Benioff & D.B. Weiss - departing Star Wars for Netflix, and more bonus discussion on Eddie Murphy's "Dolemite is My Name!" The SSN Crew returns to discuss two very different new movies featuring Black actors. First up is "Harriet," the hotly-debated biopic about Black American hero Harriet Tubman embroiled in multiple controversies, some reasonable, some blatant lies. Does the movie do justice to our legend, or is it a white savior movie featuring an implausible interracial love story? Or...is it neither? Then, we review Eddie Murphy's return to form in "Dolemite is My Name," with its look at the making of a blaxploitation classic and star turns for Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Tituss Burgess, Mike Epps, a heavily wigged T.I., and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. Plus, reviews of the first two episodes of HBO's new "Watchmen" series, the BET+ streaming show "Bigger," Taika Watiti's Oscar-bait Nazi dramedy "Jojo Rabbit," and Tyler Perry's new BET shows "The Oval" and "Sistas". Pioneering actress and singer Diahann Carroll passed away at the age of 84 last week. As one of the earliest Black Broadway stars and the first Black woman to star on TV as a professional woman, she broke down multiple barriers for Black women in entertainment. In this special episode of the SSN Crew, and special guests Alasha and C-Dubb from The C-Dubb Show, discuss Ms. Carroll's career and four of her most famous acting achievements: as the star of the sitcom "Julia," as the lead of the cult classic film "Claudine," as Dominique Deveraux on "Dynasty" and "The Colbys," and as Whitley Gilbert's mother Marion on "A Different World". The most infamous film release (so far!) of 2019 is finally here! In this episode, the SSN Crew and special guest Dr. Apryl review Todd Phillips' equally praised and maligned "Joker," based (very) loosely on Batman's comic-book archenemy. Everything that ain't tied down is getting "rebooted"! Where are the original ideas?! Oh, the indignation and injustice! Felicity Huffman has been sentenced to fourteen whole days in prison for paying to have her daughter's SAT scores "enhanced", while Lori Loughlin (Aunt Becky) continues to stand up in her defiance after also paying for illegal "help" for her daughters' college admissions. The SSN Crew returns from vacation to get back into the swing of things. In this episode, we revisit "Rocko's Modern Life" through a new Netflix special, ranting about Amazon's "Carnival Row," and whether spending three hours watching an evil clown kill kids in "It: Chapter Two" is worth your well-earned money. Plus! Reviews of "Dora and the Lost City of Gold," "Steven Universe: The Movie," discussions of Warner's upcoming CGI Scooby-Doo movie, and a recap of our trip to the inaugural Lightbox Expo in Pasadena!
The 1989 New York City trials involving the five teenaged boys then known as the "Central Park Five" represented a notable example of the injustices and mistreatment Black people often suffer in the United States. In this episode, the SSN Crew reviews Ava DuVernay's acclaimed four-part miniseries, which dramatizes the lives of Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Corey Richardson, Raymond Santanna, and Korey Wise both before and after they were framed for the sexual and physical assault of a young white woman jogger and sent to prison for crimes they did not commit. Roger Allers & Rob Minkoff's seminal animated film, "The Lion King," represented the pinnacle of success for traditional Disney animation...and the beginning of its downfall. Twenty-five years and numerous regime turnovers later, the Disney corporation has remade "The Lion King" under the direction of "Iron Man's" Jon Favreau. Marketed strangely as a "live action" remake, it is a scene-by-scene (and almost shot-by-shot) rehash animated with photorealistic CGI animals and environments. Can the new version hold a candle to the old? How did the original "Lion King" manage to both break box office records and plant the seeds for the death of American traditional (hand-drawn) animation? In this episode, the SSN Crew and special guest Stephanie of the Mocha Minutes Podcast answer these questions and more, including a revisiting of the short-lived feature animation studios that sprang up in "Lion King's" wake, how both versions of the film deal with their celebrity voice castings, and what the future of the Disney "live action" remakes could look like, for better or worse. Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel Studios had some great products for us over the weekend at the 50th anniversary of San Diego Comic-Con. Among the surprises: five new movies, five new Disney+ streaming TV series, a returning actor who swore they'd never do a Marvel film again, and a surprise movie announcement that broke the by-then-already-broken Internet! The SSN Crew and special guest Stephanie from the Mocha Minutes Podcast discuss what they think of the upcoming projects, as well as other announced happenings at SDCC, including HBO's "His Dark Materials," a new "Snowpiercer" TV show, and - oh boy! - the Archies finally coming to "Riverdale"! Spider-Man may be able to do whatever a spider can, but can he still balance that with being a regular kid on a regular European field trip? And can he still impress the girl he likes or will getting wrapped up in a new mission with Nick Fury and...Mysterio?...lay all of that to ruin? The SSN Crew reviews "Spider-Man: Far From Home," the latest entry in the neigh-unstoppable Marvel Cinematic Universe. Do the kids in the movie feel like real teens or movie teens? Did walking into the film with prior familiarity of one of its key characters spoil the movie for us? And what of those post-credit scenes? In addition, we discuss R. Kelly getting hemmed up on federal charges, Halle Bailey being cast as "The Little Mermaid," and why our hosts are a little split on their excitement for the "live-action" CGI remake of "The Lion King." One would think that Fox, in having gone through the debacle that was "X-Men: The Last Stand" 13 years ago, would know what to do different for their second adaptation of the classic X-Men "Dark Phoenix Saga." Apparently, that would hav been too much like right. The SSN Crew and special guest Tammy AKA Cowkitty saw "Dark Phoenix" so that you don't have to. We break down the bountiful violations of the spirit of the comics, Simon Kinberg taking over direction from an alleged predator with mixed results, replacing Skrulls with asparagus people, and perhaps the worst Storm scene in any of these movies. iTunes is dead, long live...Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple TV? While iTunes is slowly sunsetted in favor of its smaller, less bloated spawn, the SSN Crew, with special guests Richard (RJCC) & Amelia, look back on their experiences with the evolution of digital music over the years. Prince Ali, Disney loves he, he's in three movies A Broadway show, a cartoon you know, he fights a big snake The SSN Crew breaks it down How Ashman & Menken threw down And how Guy Ritchie and Will Smith did this remake Your wish is our command! Special guests Tammy AKA Cowkitty and Stephanie of the Mocha Minutes Podcast join us to discuss the history and making of Disney's "Aladdin", and to rate and review the new 2019 live-action version starring Mena Massoud, Naomi "Jameika" Scott, and an intermittently blue and brown Will Smith! But what does animation legend Richard Williams think of "Aladdin?" Was Disney really having trouble finding proper leads for the remake? And will the new version make you proud of your boy or does it deserve to be banished to the ends of the earth? Just ruminate whilst we illuminate all this and more! (Spoilers are evident throughout for both films, in case you were the kid that was absent the day the 1992 movie was shown in school.) Who knew "Arthur" was even still in production? The PBS' animated kids' show broke the internet this week with a Season 22 (!) opener that showed anthropomorphic animal kids' teacher getting married to a man. As one might imagine, some ignorant people are mad about it. The SSN Crew discusses the "Arthur"/Mr. Ratburn controversy, as well as "The Chi's" Jason Mitchell being canceled for sexually harassing his co-stars, how Georgia's "heartbeat" abortion bill is affecting film and TV production in the state, and Timbaland and Jay-Z being sued by former Stax Records artist Ernie Hines.
