Author Paul Koudounaris explored the profound emotional and cultural significance of pet death and animal memorials, emphasizing their purity and directness compared to traditional human death rituals. He highlighted how grieving for pets often feels more personal and intimate, as the bond between humans and their pets is deeply private and reflective. Pets, Koudounaris argued, become mirrors of their owners, and their passing can feel like losing a part of oneself. This unique grief is compounded by societal norms that downplay the mourning of animals, even though most people experience the loss of a pet, he added.Koudounaris detailed the diverse global practices surrounding pet death, from elaborate Asian rituals conducted by Buddhist monks to specialized cemeteries in the United States, such as those exclusively for bird dogs or coon dogs. He underscored the rich cultural variations in honoring animals, from handcrafted wooden memorials in Finland to glass doghouses in South America. In the U.S., pet cemeteries are particularly abundant, reflecting a vast infrastructure of love and remembrance for pets, Koudounaris said. He shared touching and eccentric stories, such as the controversy over Rin Tin Tin's burial and the elaborate rituals some owners perform for their beloved animal companions.Koudounaris spoke about the spiritual and theological dimensions of pet death. He critiqued the historical belief that animals lack souls and celebrated concepts like the Rainbow Bridge, which provides hope of reuniting pets in the afterlife. Koudounaris tied this to the broader theme of the innocence of animals, asserting that their death feels unjust due to their purity. He also shared stories of paranormal activity linked to pet cemeteries, such as the ghost of Rudolph Valentino's dog, which continues to search for its owner.------------------------------------------Open Lines followed in the latter half of the program. Don in Alberta, Canada, discussed the impressive abilities of dogs, particularly their capacity to detect diseases, including cancer, seizures, and other conditions, often before symptoms become apparent. According to Don, different breeds have varying levels of olfactory sensitivity and he recounted examples of dogs detecting drugs, explosives, and even predators from great distances. Done advocated for the broader use of trained dogs in hospitals and medical settings, suggesting that dogs are more effective and cost-efficient than advanced medical equipment for certain diagnostic tasks.AC in Cleveland shared insights about the Pearl Harbor attack, highlighting lesser-known details. He recounted the story of an Army mobile radar unit at Kahu Point in Oahu, which detected incoming Japanese squadrons early on December 7, 1941. However, their warning to Hickam Field was dismissed, missing the opportunity to scramble planes and potentially mitigate the attack. He also noted the U.S. had broken Japanese codes months prior, which later contributed to victories like the Battle of Midway. The final half our featured a replay of the late author Hal Lindsey discussing biblical prophecy.

We're joined by Dr Paul Koudounaris talking about his book ‘Faithful until Death'. As a first in terms of investigating Pet Cemeteries all around the world, Paul admits this was a labour of love of 11 years. Revealing the history of pet ownership as in the late Victorian era industrialisation meant more folk moved into cities, creating a new kind of pet husbandry, which included giving them a 'good' death. Paul explores Cemeteries, and tombs from as far afield as Thailand, across Europe, in the UK and across the USA. We chat about the ridiculous thought that animals do not have souls, as an illogical concept of theology.  We talk about the resistance to burying pets in churchyards, and the people who helped make change with setting up/ building dedicated pet cemeteries. As a massive animal lover, Paul became a pet bereavement councillor for several years as well as tracking down the author of iconic poem : The Rainbow Bridge, and in revealing one of the greatest mysteries, of the Paris Pet Cemetery called Le Cimitières des Chiens in Paris where the iconic canine film legend,  RIn Tin Tin,  is said to be buried. We chat about Tawny the ex circus lion who lived in Beverley Hills and rests in the cemetery in LA, and more! The book takes you on an emotional journey, through which there's comfort in how many have grieved their pets, for a loss that is means losing apart of oneself, and how Pet Cemeteries set in history our love for all animals.  As the late Queen famously said: “Grief is the price of Love.” Faithful Until Death is published by Thames & Hudson or you can buy it hereFollow Paul on Instagram For more about Anna go to annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff PawtraitsTo advertise on or sponsor A Dog's Life email: info@theloniouspunkproductions.com

Listen Now The Cost of Pet Ownership The first year of being a pet parent to a cat will cost about $1,035, and for a dog, that number is $1,843, as estimated by the ASPCA. The estimates seem somewhat conservative by Animal Radio's standards. Listen Now The Wealthiest Pets In The World Just like people, there are some really wealthy pets in the world! The richest of them is probably not a shock to you – it's the long-deceased "Grumpy Cat!" Grumpy's owner has made over 100 million dollars for appearances, modeling, book deals, and ads.

This week I have the privilege to highlight the incredible story of Charlie Cifarelli. Charlie had everything in life he set out to achieve until one day; his world fell apart over a national story about a dog named Star. What started as a journey to save a dog, in turn, would save him. Star taught Charlie everything he needed to learn about love. Charlie went from having a transactional life with value on useless things and realized what he thought he wanted didn't make him happy. We look for love because we believe it will complete us – but the truth is LOVE is universal. We can be in a relationship or have a dream home or career, yet often, it does not equate to happiness. Charlie share's his tips around having a successful relationship, why comparison is the thief of joy, the value of finding purpose and why having gratitude is most important! Charlie Cifarelli, is an author, motivational speaker, businessman and dog lover, with a focus on rescues, in fact he has seven! In his early twenties he became homeless and addicted to drugs. He went into recovery after being directed to a Monastery where he got clean and sober, finally after numerous attempts. Circumstances led him to the Midwest where he lived in Nebraska for 25 years working at three maximum security prisons. He worked on death row, connecting with the inmates on a deep level - he became the inmates favorite! After seeing enough sadness - he started a trash business with the hopes of having a life of freedom and happiness which only made him miserably comfortable. It wasn't until August 13, 2012 that his world would collide with a dog who was reported to be and killed in New York City by a police officer while protecting her owner – who was homeless. For the first time in Charlie's life he believed in something he couldn't see at the corner of 14th and  2nd. Today, Charlie shares his story of love. Love for his little girl Star “his snoopy” a dog so special - she's on Wikipedia with the likes of Rin Tin Tin and Lassie. Charlie believes love starts in many places and carries over. He'll share how rescuing Star connected him with people globally and how love found him in the most unlikely place on the corner of 14th & 2nd. Tune into this beautiful story of redemption, hope and most importantly love.To find out more about Charlie Cifarelli go to www.charliecifarelli.com for follow on Instagram @charlie_cifarelli or on Facebook under Charlie Cifarelli.

Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd who starred in more than 27 Hollywood films, died on 10th August, 1932 at the age of 13. Radio stations around the country interrupted programming to announce his death and then broadcast an hour long tribute to him.  Discovered in war-torn France by American corporal Lee Duncan, he was taken back to the USA and trained to be a stunt dog, but it was his emotional close-up work which wowed the critics. “Perhaps Rin Tin Tin belongs to that modern school of acting, which expresses everything in the face”, raved the LA Times. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal why Rin Tin Tin was named in Duncan's wife's divorce filing; explain how he followed in the footsteps of previous canine movie star, Strongheart; and consider the logistics of exactly how he performed in the Rin Tin Tin radio show…  Further Reading: • ‘Excerpt: Rin Tin Tin by Susan Orlean' (The New York Times, 2011): https://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/20/books/review/rin-tin-tin.html • ‘The Dogs Who Saved Hollywood: Strongheart and Rin Tin Tin' (Rutgers University Press, 2014): https://arcade.stanford.edu/content/dogs-who-saved-hollywood-strongheart-and-rin-tin-tin-0 • ‘Susan Orlean on the original Rin Tin Tin' (The New Yorker, 2011): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFOA4og8To8 But… what's that, boy? Bob Weatherwax;Four Feet to Fame: A Hollywood Dog Trainer's JourneyMy name is Bob Weatherwax. My father was Rudd B. Weatherwax, best known as the original owner and trainer of Lassie. My father and I were the trainers of some of Hollywood's most famous dogs. From my Dad's work with Asta in the original Thin Man series, up until my work with Einstein (the dog in Back to the Future), we have created a long and storied legacy of trained dogs in the motion picture industry. Of course, the most memorable animal in our work was none other than Lassie, the cultural icon of both movies and television. My family's journey began with my grandfather, Walter S. Weatherwax, who was a deputy United States Marshal in the New Mexico Territory. He was also an inventor, and even a trick-rider in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.Economic hard times brought Walter to Hollywood, when the film industry was in its infancy. At that time, some of Hollywood's silent legends were making their mark on American culture. Among the stars was a German shepherd named Rin Tin Tin. It was in that unique place and time, that Walter and his sons, (Rudd, Frank, and Jack), made their own mark on American movie history. My father's brother, Jack, was the trainer of Toto in the 1939 classic, Wizard of Oz. Dad's brother, Frank, trained Spike, the dog in Disney's Old Yeller. Rudd, my Dad, trained Asta, Daisy, and Lassie, the collie who would rise to super stardom. I worked with Dad from the early 1960's until his death in 1985. I carried on the Lassie legacy until 2002. Then, against my wishes, the Weatherwax family voted to sell the Lassie trademark.Due to my father's genius, we transformed the training of dogs from simple props on a movie set into actors who seemed to behave with human-like emotions. Dad was a transitional figure in Hollywood animal training, and my experiences with him from childhood to adulthood have transformed my life and made me who I am today.I hope that my father's life-long labor of love, of which I am proud to have shared by his side, will be uplifting in a world that - more than ever - needs some inspiration from the past.https://weatherwaxtraineddogs.com/Music Playlist;1.
