1985 was quickly becoming one of the most competitive years in the history of animation, setting the stage for future 80s nostalgia. There were so many classic 80s cartoons released in 1985-- including a unique new series called ThunderCats--that it was going to be difficult to stand out. But fortunately, the production company behind the new show knew a thing or two about capturing the attention of kids, as they had been doing it during the holidays for decades. But now, they were moving to after-school and Saturday morning cartoons.  From the studio that brought us beloved Christmas classics like Rudolph and Frosty came the story of a race of humanoid feline superheroes. With characters like Lion-O and Snarf, and a very popular line of toys from LJN, the ThunderCats quickly became a new breed in children's entertainment, a standout 1980s cartoon, and a pop culture phenomenon.  Check out new shows early, and ad-free: Patreon.com/80s

How does one become a political cartoonist? And what lessons can we learn from their craft?Episode Summary In this episode, I sit down with legendary political cartoonist Steve Bell to explore the artistry and challenges behind his provocative work. From his early struggles as a teacher to his meteoric rise as a satirical voice at The Guardian, Steve shares the experiences that shaped his unique style. We delve into his creative process, the evolution of his iconic characters, and his reflections on a career that's spanned over four decades. Steve doesn't hold back as he recounts his battles to maintain creative independence in an ever-changing media landscape. Whether it's navigating editorial constraints, mastering the balance between humour and sharp commentary, or sketching under the pressure of daily deadlines, Steve offers an honest and inspiring perspective on his craft. Along the way, he shares fascinating anecdotes, like the evolution of David Cameron as a cartoon character and the artistic freedom he carved out for himself at The Guardian and how ultimately using that freedom led to him leaving the paper. This conversation isn't just for fans of Steve's work but for anyone interested in creativity, resilience, and the power of satire to provoke and inspire. Join us as we explore the world of political cartooning through the eyes of one of its most iconic practitioners. ⚠️ Warning: this episode contains adult language and content, so listener discretion is advised. Steve Bell Biography Steve Bell is one of the most influential UK political cartoonists of our time, known for his incisive satire and striking illustrations. A graduate of Leeds College of Art, Steve initially trained as a teacher before realizing his passion for cartooning. His first major break came with Time Out magazine, where his “Maggie's Farm” strip skewered the Thatcher era. In 1981, he joined The Guardian, where his daily cartoons became a staple for readers and a thorn in the side of the powerful. Over his illustrious career, Steve developed a reputation for blending biting political commentary with imaginative visuals, often pushing the boundaries of satire. His work has appeared in numerous publications, and he remains a vocal advocate for creative freedom in an increasingly restrictive media environment. Mozart Meets Betty Boop: How Joel Pierson and the Queen's Cartoonists Are Getting People Hooked on Classical Music and Jazz with Classic Cartoons

From dinosaurs dancing to The Rite of Spring in Disney's Fantasia to a tuxedoed Bugs Bunny performing Liszt's Second Hungarian Rhapsody, classic cartoons have long been a delightful entry point for kids of all ages to get to know classical music. That's a tradition composer and jazz pianist Joel Pierson is breathing new life into as artistic director of The Queen's Cartoonists. Working at the crossroads of classical music, jazz, and the golden age of animation, The Queen's Cartoonists perform the scores of classic animated films from around the world, perfectly synchronizing their brilliant jazz-band arrangements with the films projected on stage. Winning audiences over with their madcap humor and a musical palette that mixes Rossini and Strauss with Carl Stalling and Raymond Scott, the ensemble has sold out venues from the Blue Note Jazz Club to the Konzerthaus Berlin. For Pierson, the group's mission is simply to show that anyone can discover a love for classical music and jazz, given the right introduction. "I always say we're essentially tricking people into liking classical music and jazz," Pierson says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "Of course we're playing a lot of [that] music, but that's not really how you get people in. The hook is that this is a bunch of animated films with a highly synchronized live performance by some excellent New York musicians, and people really like that." In this episode, we talk more about Pierson's process for arranging the wide variety of music The Queen's Cartoonists performs, and he gives us a sneak peek at the group's latest project — a wildly inventive reimagining of Mozart's Requiem. Plus, he shares how travel fuels his creativity, his favorite basement beer bar in New York City, and why a bidet attachment is truly, in his words, "a life-changer." — Classical Post uncovers the creativity behind exceptional music. The World Celebrated Bugs In Drag the Day Before 'Bugs Bunny Day' So you know what that Means! "MARSHA!" Hello and Welcome to the best Looney Tunes Podcast on the web! This week on the pod, I sit down with Jenny Lorenzo (Jellystone, Victor and Valentina) to discuss the Gender Politics in Classic Cartoons namely, Bugs in Drag! "In the 1992 movie Wayne's World, Garth Algar asks the question, "Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he put on a dress and played a girl bunny? His buddy Wayne didn't, but Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, and the Tasmanian Devil are just a few of the many males who have been bewitched, bothered and bewildered by Bugs' seemingly endless wardrobe of women's clothing." - A passage from the Ultimate Looney Tunes Guide.    Looney Tunes In the NEWS: Porky's Hare Hunt (April 30th, 1938) - First Appearance of The Happy Rabbit (prototype for Bugs Bunny)   Apparently He's Never Watched Bugs Bunny! This conversation ties into why Bugs was trending the literal day before 'Bugs Bunny Day' (April 30th), due to the out of touch words of Ron DeSantis who claimed that old cartoons didn't challenge gender norms.  Cartoon Shorts Discussed:  Hare Trimmed - Dir. Friz Freleng (1953) Story by Warren Foster - "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride." Bedevilled Rabbit - Dir. Bob McKimsom (1957) Story by Tedd Pierce - "She's a nice lady." Rabbit Seasoning - Dir. We'll watch Droopy find a way to take Dixieland music all the way to the Hollywood Bowl. And we'll watch Grampy throw a party as only Grampy can. Plus, Micah considers the end of Arthur, Street Fighters in Magic: the Gathering, and video game adaptations of the hit film Kirikou and the Sorceress, while Matsy doubles down on his controversial Cuphead stance and watches the Laughing Salesman ruin people's souls. 50 episodes! Fortunately, I keep my podcasts numbered for just such an emergency.   Cartoons in this episode: "Plop Goes the Weasel" "Tarts and Flowers" "Dixieland Droopy" "Betty Boop and Grampy"

Soooooo.......we know it's been a minute since we last uploaded an episode. Without getting too into the weeds with personal business, let's just say that we've had a lot of life changes that have limited our time to dedicate toward The Real OTG. Not to mention that we're a couple of workin' stiffs who do all the research/recording/editing for this side hustle of ours (as most millennials apparently have), so cut us some slack! J/KWith that disclaimer, we hope you enjoy this very fun dive into a calamitous cloud of cartoon conversations from our childhood. Come with us as we reminisce about 80s classics from He-Man to Transformers and everything in between that you may have forgotten about (or actively chose to forget about). So, grab make your fort in front of the TV, a bowl of sugar-covered cereal, and ride along with us on the trail toward the cartoon express.FYI, we had so much fun doing this one that it had be to two parts which means it's....to be continued....

....previously on The Real OTG podcast: it's a continuation of the candid cartoon collaboration. We geeked out so much on 80s cartoons that we have to spoon feed it to the listener over two episodes, rather than open the firehouse into their cartoon-lovin' faceholes! We hope you enjoy the end of this journey with the ghosts of cartoons past.P.S. We missed you all so much after being gone so long we decided to throw both of these episodes up together. We didn't want to leave you all in suspense like those damn shows that tortured our Saturday mornings until the following week. I'm looking at you, G.I. Joe; teasing the watchers more than a Cheetara-centered episode of Thundercats.
