This week, we're diving into Set It Off with our cousins in podcasting, Anthony and Helaine from Talkin Ish': A Podcast Amongst Friends. We check whether the film still holds up more than 20 years later, debate who in our crew would play which character, and ask the important question: Did Titi really deserve an equal cut after that first robbery? We show love to director F. Gary Gray and share our Top 5 favorite Black directors. Of course, with Jason and Anthony on the mic, you know there had to be some Drake vs. Kendrick shots—though surprisingly, neither makes our ultimate bank robbery playlist.Plus, we cast our dream 2025 remake and answer the all-important question: Was It Good Though?

EPISODE #442-- We finally get around to celebrating Black History Month with the formative SET IT OFF from 1996. Directed by F. Gary Gray and staring Vivica A. Fox, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinket, and the mean doctor from Scrubs, SET IT OFF tells the story about four black women in LA pushed to their limit, who decide to start robbing banks. It's pretty fun, I don't know. We also talk about ANUJA (2024) on Netflix, Michael Mann's THIEF (1981) and MANHUNTER (1986), SAMURAI REBELLION (1967) on the Criterion Channel, PROBLEMISTA (2023), and THE KNICK on HBO Max. So So Def,R&B 风格的 LaFace 厂牌;Organized Noize 早期制作作品: TLC 的“What About Your Friends remix”(1992), OutKast 初次亮相, “Sleigh Ride remix” (1992),电影《小鬼当家2 》歌曲;*推荐 Netflix 纪录片 “The Art of Organized Noize” (2016);Dungeon Family 团体受 funk 和 soul 影响非常大,但区别于同时期西海岸的 G-Funk,他们对于乐器和声音的选择运用很有独到之处,并且在节奏设计上也是非常独创的,这也导致了他们说唱的 flow 变化及其灵活;Organized Noize 制作的首张专辑 Parental Advisory “Ghetto Street Funk” (1993) 风格更接近纽约;1993 年 LaFace 厂牌的圣诞歌曲合集中的 “Player's Ball”是 OutKast 的首发作品,发布即大获成功,1994 年首张专辑 “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik”是 Organized Noize 制作风格的精华体现,展现了南方乡绅的 funky 气质,以及来自 P Funk 的影响;1994 年底为 TLC 制作了”Waterfall”使 ON 的才华被主流认可,成为了当时的抢手制作组合,也吸引到了 Interscope 的关注,促成了接下来与 ON 的千万美元合约,当然个性强烈对创作风格有坚持的 ON 由于无法向 Interscope 作出商业妥协又回到了亚特兰大,继续与老东家 LaFace 的合作;1995 年 The Source Award 最佳新人奖颁给 OutKast, André 在一片嘘声中的 “The South got something to say!” “Soul Food”是诗意的,饱含灵性与信仰的作品,它是对亚特兰大黑人历史的哀悼,祈求新世界秩序的希望,相比于激烈反抗体制的骄傲姿态,它更像是一种幸存者的谦卑,如此独特的叙事视角,只在亚特兰大,唯有 Dungeon Family;Organized Noize 为 1996 年的电影 “Set It Off” 监制制作的电影专辑;1996 年 OutKast 专辑 “ATLiens”温暖顺滑,二人的写词叙事功力更老练有趣,取材独特新鲜,擅长使用微妙含蓄的比喻让 OutKast 的内容具有鲜明特色;1998 年 OutKast 专辑“Aquemini” 对于组合来说是一个比较重要的转折之作,如万花筒一般奇妙多彩,他们的审美已经突破了 Hip Hop 框架,P-Funk,雷鬼的融合更多,在乐器的选择上拓宽了制作思路,是第一张获得 Source Magazine 五麦克高评价的南方说唱专辑;1998 年 Goodie Mob 的第二张专辑 “Still Standing”;1998- 1999年 Dungeon Family发表的作品有: Witchdocor 首张 “...A S.W.A.T Healin' Ritual”(1998), Sleepy's Theme “The Vinyl Room”(1998), Cool Breeze “East Point's Greatest Hit”(1999), Goodie Mob “World Party”(1999);至此 Dungeon Family 有一个时期分界,Organized Noize 的制作主导作用在 OutKast 中逐渐减少,OutKast 二人与 Mr.DJ 以制作组合 Earthtone III 开始创作,2000-2003 期间参与了许多客串与制作,包括 Mystikal,Kelis 和地窖其他成员;千禧年前后,亚特兰大经济发展愈加繁荣,crunk 这种超高能量的 party 音乐主导了亚特兰大及南方的说唱场景,这个时期整个南方的农村说唱获得商业关注,这类风格其实与 Organized Noize 所代表的 Dungeon 另类美学差别很大;2000 年 OutKast 的 “Stankonia”对于风格的探索和实验性更进一步,将他们的灵感来源挖掘运用到新的高度;2001 年 Dungeon Family 的作品有:Slimm Calhoun “The Skinny”(主要由 Earthtone III制作), Backbone “Concrete Law”(主要由 Organized Noize 制作), Dungeon Family 唯一一次以团体名发表的全员大合集 “Even In Darkness”;2002 年作品:Joi “Star Kitty's Revenge”, CeeLo Green 个人首张 “Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections”, The Calhouns – “Made in Dirty South”;2003 年作品:Killer Mike “Monster”, Bubba Sparxxx “Deliverance”, Big Gipp “Mutant Mindframe”,以及 Dungeon Family 第二代合集 “Rico Wade Presents Da Connect “Dungeon Family 2nd Generation”, 其中之一就是成为后来亚特兰大代表人物的 Future,彼时以 Meathead 的名字亮相;2003 年最重要的作品当属 OutKast “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”,商业大爆获得了格莱美多项大奖,Big Boi 的把控力和重要作用在这张中得以体现,组合的音乐性与视觉创意作为一个整体的另类审美对接下来的嘻哈影响深远;2005 年:Big Boi solo 领导的合集 “Big Boi Presents Purple Ribbon” ;2006 年:OutKast 组合最后一次发表作品 “Idlewild”, 二人主演的同名电影上映,Dungeon Family 的活跃期结束;2010 年 Big Boi “Sir Lucious Left Foot… The Son of Chico Dusty”是我们后来发觉牛逼的大作;2009 年 Khujo和Jneiro Jarel以 Willie Isz 之名在地下厂牌Lex Records 发表了实验性专辑 “Georgiavania”;2017 年 Organized Noize 发表了同名 EP,在新时代他们标志性的制作美学带来的感动是无与伦比的;最后,Rest in peace, Rico Wade.主题歌单请点击:YouTube Playlist & Apple Music Playlist本期节目 Playlist:Goodie Mob feat. We had the pleasure of interviewing Between You & Me over Zoom video!Fresh from the frenzy of their sold-out intimate headline tour, Australia's Between You & Me (BYAM) have today shared their brand new single and music video, “YEAH!” Opening with sunny acoustic chords reminiscent of early 2000s radio hits, “YEAH!” bursts into a feel-good verse carried by the distinct vocals of frontman Jake Wilson before moving into what is perhaps the band's most pronounced singalong chorus yet. In line with its bright and upbeat sound.Jake says the song is about “living your best life and not caring what anyone else thinks. I imagine this song playing in the montage scene of an early 2000s bratty comedy film. Stylistically it's a big shift for BYAM, but we wanted to bring beachy summer vibes to a fun and carefree song.”The band teamed up once again with Canadian producer Sam Guaiana (Armageddon - 2021), who flew to Australia earlier this year to record with the band at Beveridge Road Recording Studios in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges.“YEAH!” is the band's second independent release, and follows their addictive February single “Nevermind” which, on their recent run of intimate headline shows, proved to be a new fan favorite. Sonically “Nevermind” earmarked a new era for BYAM, and according to the band perfectly captured “the spirit of our band and our live show.” The single was swiftly added to rotation on triple j, and arrived ahead of a massive stint in the USA supporting Knuckle Puck and Real Friends, followed by an Australian tour joining Slowly Slowly on the road upon their return. BYAM also joined You Me At Six and Set It Off on their recent Australian run.In 2021, Between You & Me's acclaimed record Armageddon (Hopeless Records) took the band to new heights, featuring hit singles “Deadbeat”, “Butterflies”, “Change” and “Go To Hell” ft. Mikaila Delgado of Yours Truly. The electrifying 10-track record landed as triple j's Spotlight Album on release, alongside an interview on the station's Breakfast program, and has since clocked up over 13.5million global streams in addition to support from BBC Radio 1 (UK), Spotify, and more. To celebrate the album, Between You & Me stepped out on their biggest headline Australian tour in 2022, finishing with a milestone sold-out hometown show at Melbourne's The Corner Hotel. As the year drew to a close, the band took to the USA, joining American pop punk outfit State Champs on an extensive month-long run. With new singles “YEAH!” and “Nevermind” minting BYAM's newly independent era, the band are more motivated than ever to continue their global takeover. Fans both at home and abroad can expect more new music and touring news to come.We want to hear from you!
