In this episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, we sit down with Ojai resident Sharon Scott Williams, whose deeply personal memoir Crazy Mama has been transformed into a riveting one-woman play, premiering at the Rubicon Theatre from March 27 to April 13. Starring the incomparable star of stage and screen Linda Purl, the production brings to life 16 characters in a raw, heartbreaking, yet often humorous exploration of a daughter's decades-long struggle to save her mother from the grip of paranoid schizophrenia. We talk with Sharon about the painful yet redemptive journey that shaped her story — growing up with a mother who believed she was working for the FBI, the weight of hope and helplessness, and the profound impact of mental illness on families. Directed by TV and stage veteran Anson Williams, (Sharon's husband), Crazy Mama is a testament to resilience, love, and the complicated ties that bind us to those we hold dear.Join us for this intimate conversation as Sharon reflects on turning her trauma into art, the catharsis of storytelling, and the power of theater to foster understanding and empathy.Check out the Rubicon's website for more information - https://www.rubicontheatre.org/events/crazy-mama/

TV CONFIDENTIAL: A radio talk show about television

TVC 681.3: Ed welcomes back singer/actress Linda Purl (Happy Days, Matlock, The Office). Linda is about to star in Crazy Mama, a riveting one-woman play that not only sheds light on the issue of mental illness with Southern-style humor and directness, but will feature Linda playing sixteen different characters. Ed asks Linda what first attracted her to the play and how she approaches to taking on the various personalities she must assume over the course of the story, plus Linda shares a few memories about working with Garry Marshall, including the many ways that Marshall kept the cast of Happy Days grounded despite the show's enormous success. Written by Sharon Scott Williams and directed by Linda's fellow Happy Days alumnus Anson Williams, Crazy Mama makes its world premiere at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, California on Wednesday, Mar. 26 through Sunday, Apr. 6. For tickets and more information, call (805) 667-2900 or go to RubiconTheatre.org. Linda Purl will also perform at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, California for one night only, Sunday, Mar. 16, beginning at 7:30pm. Click here for tickets and more information.

Sharon Scott Williams bares her soul in a play called Crazy Mama, a powerful, personal story that's at once unique and wholly relatable. It's about family, mental illness and the bonds and devotion that propel us to protect and defend those we hold dear.  Crazy Mama is running at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, CA March 26 - April 6, 2025. It stars Linda Purl and is directed by Anson Williams, both icons of classic TV, including Happy Days, and one of whom is married to playwright Sharon Scott Williams. (You only get one guess which.)Sharon came home from school, at the age of eight, to find her mother wielding a knife, in a psychotic episode. The ensuing events led to extended hospitalization and a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Her family's coping heroism inspired her, decades later, to write a memoir, which Sharon's husband, actor and director Anson Williams (Yes, you guess correctly), felt would make an astonishing one-woman stage show. With Linda Purl in the starring role (playing 16 different characters!) the stage play of 'Crazy Mama' gives audiences the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and it provides a conduit to conversations about mental illness, trauma and family dynamics. Sharon tells how the crafting of the play inspired the processing of her long buried, confusing emotional cocktail of fear, guilt, shame, and anger and with similar Virginia ancestral roots, Linda identified instantly with the work and the power of its messages.Plus, Sharon, Anson and Linda all claim Covid Love stories! Sharon, an Ojai, California Real Estate agent, had shown Anson a house a decade earlier. But, with both of them single, she received a text invitation from him for lunch! They spent the pandemic falling in love. Linda ran into an acquaintance with a very similar show-biz history, Patrick Duffy. Their mutual friend, Richard Thomas paved the way and their Zoom friendship blossomed into romance! Also, we are proud to present our all-new IMDB Roulette Sub Genre quiz sensation, Were You On It, featuring full disclosures about Anson and Linda's appearances on: Baywatch, The Waltons, The Secret Storm, Fantasy Island, Black Market Baby and I Married A Centerfold! In recommendations-- Weezy: Documentary Beatles 64 on Disney+Fritz: Documentary Becoming Katharine Graham on Amazon PrimePath Points of Interest:Crazy Mama at The Rubicon TheatreAnson Williams IMDBAnson Williams WikipediaAnson Williams on FacebookLinda Purl IMDBLinda Purl WikipediaLinda Purl on InstagramLinda Purl in "POSSIBILITIES - songs of HOPE, RISK and MAYBE" at Catalina Jazz Club in HollywoodBeatles 64 - Disney+Becoming Katharine Graham - Amazon Prime

One of the unfortunate truths about our society is that we're more divided, vitriolic and operating from fear than ever before.  When we look at how people interact, there's no civility and mutual respect anymore. There's this huge collective tantrum and so much anger in people and it's completely polarized the culture.  This is especially highlighted in the political sphere. From local government to the national stage, there's more division, more contempt than collaboration, and that was never the original intent.  At its very basic level, government is about creating harmony and equity in society, but that's not happening anymore. How did we get here? How do we find peace in the midst of such vitriolic polarity?  In episode, former mayor of Ojai, California, Betsy Stix joins us to talk about leading in these contempt-filled times, and how she maintained equanimity in inflamed situations.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -A powerful impetus  How did The Big Leap lead Betsy Stix into local government? -The source of our separation  The amount of conflict and polarity we're seeing in our world feels unprecedented. How did we get here?  -React, disengage or rise above In these times of high conflict, it's really easy to get hijacked by fear. How do we redirect towards love?  -Back to breath How do we use our breath to create safety for ourselves when there's chaos all around us? Guest Bio Betsy is a lifelong teacher of human development, yoga, English, and French and former mayor of Ojai, California. After teaching for decades, she decided to run for mayor in 2020 during COVID, after reading Gay Hendricks' “The Big Leap” and learning that the city council was slow to enact environmental and social justice policy.  She canvased the town of 7,500 people in a mask and won 64% of the vote!  And she won again in 2022 when she ran against actor Anson Williams. During her tenure, the Ojai City Council passed rent stabilization/tenant protection, a greenhouse gas emission reduction code, approved truly low income housing while developing better solutions for the unhoused, passed animal protection ordinances celebrated by PETA, improved the city's plastic and tree ordinances, flew the Pride Flag for the first time, and founded the Mayor's Youth Council. She is proud to have run two 100% positive campaigns and championed emotional and spiritual intelligence while moving the ball forward for progressive issues.  She was so grateful to have been able to depend upon her yoga practices and experience teaching children and young people as well as the teachings of Katie Hendricks and Marianne Williamson to support her during her time in office.  She looks forward to continuing to serve her community and the planet. Happy Days is the iconically classic 70s TV sensation about the 50s. Its legacy is unparalleled, its popularity ongoing. The show  launched a character who remains the embodiment of cool, Fonzie, and it cemented its cast into icon status in perpetuity.  That cast includes Donny Most, who played wise-cracking Ralph Malph, who, complete with his own catchphrase, “I still got it!” took a minor role and turned it into the stuff of legend.Don joins us this week to look back on his decades in Hollywood, the magic formula that brought Happy Days to fruition, and created a lasting legacy, and his tireless pursuit of creative expression that continues to keep his schedule full and fulfilling.Don shares stories about his first foray into show business, as a Catskills performing teen, his early guest starring roles on Emergency and Room 222, how he dropped out of college to maintain his acting momentum and landed a small role on Happy Days which he initially turned down until a fateful basketball playing encounter between his manager and Garry Marshall upped the incentives and sealed the deal. Donny and his cast-mates developed a strong, life-long bond which he credits to the collaborative set atmosphere, the genius of Garry Marshall and the strong example set by Ron Howard, which helped anchor egos aboard the Happy Days rocket ride. Type-casting came with the Happy Days territory and it took years or hard work on stage for new opportunities to present themselves. Don has since gone into directing and producing and his most recent roles are the most compelling and diverse of his career. Potsie took most of the lead vocals in the Happy Days band but Donny has been a singer since childhood and his most recent big-band, American Songbook recording, New York High has a BBC reviewer calling him, “The new Sinatra.”All this plus the truth behind the lawsuit against CBS,  Happy Days trivia and Don's dramatic Baywatch rescue! And, in recommendations, Fritz and Weezy are discussing Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval and Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, both on Netflix.Path Points of Interest:Donny MostDonny Most on WikiDonny Most on IMDBDonny Most on TwitterNew York High on Apple MusicFar HavenHarsen's Island RevengeUnsung HeroGallatin Comic Con AppearanceEllen DeGeneres: or Your Approval on NetflixMonsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story on NetflixGift of DemocracyMedia Path Podcast

Lindsey appeared on three episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager" in two different roles. It's hard to find a person that has never seen Happy Days. This iconic show which represented life in the '50s is easily regarded as one of the most popular shows of the '70s. Set in Milwaukee, WI we meet Richie Cunningham, an all American boy and join him in his day to day interacting with his friends and family. The show was met with moderate success but by its second season was already seeing a dip in the ratings. To counter this the show's creator, Gary Marshall retooled the format a bit focusing on broad comedy and increasing the role of a minor character, a cool biker who went by the name of "Fonzie". These changes quickly turned Happy Days into the number 1 program by the mid '70s. Fonzie became a pop culture phenomenon and became one of the most merchandised characters in television history. Despite the majority of the show's success coming after the seconds season, is there enough in the show's pilot the warrant a green-light? Listen as the boys do a deep dive on Happy Day's pilot episode, "All The Way". www.S1E1POD.com Starring: Ron Howard, Marion Ross, Anson Williams, Tom Bosley, Henry Winkler, Don Most, Gavan O'Herlihy, Erin Moran, & Kathy O'Dare

TVC 600.3: TV Confidential brings you coverage of a special screening of Ron Howard's Emmy-nominated documentary Rebuilding Paradise that took place in Ojai, California this past Sunday, Oct. 16, an event that Howard himself arranged on behalf of his longtime friend Anson Williams. Williams recently ran for mayor of his hometown of Ojai; one of the most pressing issues of Anson's mayoral campaign was and is the need for fire awareness and prevention. A question-and-answer session between Howard and New York Times bestselling author Michael Arkush followed the Oct. 16 screening; in this brief clip from the Q and A, Howard discusses his longtime personal connection to the town of Ojai, and what led him to make Rebuilding Paradise. "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" fans will remember her as ensign Hoya from "The Ship" and her two appearances as Lauren, the lusty genetically enhanced genius from "Statistical Probabilities" and "Chrysalis," but many fans like myself know her best as the evil Divatox from "Power Rangers Turbo"! We talk about dancing with Alexander Siddig and singing with The Jack Pack, how she got the role and what inspired her performance, and being directed by Anson Williams, AKA Pottsy from "Happy Days"! Plus, memories of her all-girl band "American Girls," working with young Johnny Depp in one of his earliest roles, "Private Resort," being an aerobics instructor on "The Golden Girls," and hanging out with Jon Stamos on "Full House," being an evil villain in a Meatloaf music video, grinding on Steve Carrell in "The 40-Year Old Virgin", and making board games with her BFF Daryl Hannah. Anson Williams grew up in a modest home in Burbank which his WWII-veteran father bought with a VA loan. His idyllic childhood unfolded against the sunshine and particular American optimism of the 1950s and 1960s. So when he and his friend Ron Howard were cast in "Happy Days," Garry Marshall's nostalgic look back at the 1950s, he fit neatly within the 1970s zeitgeist. The show, which ran from 1974 to 1984, made Williams' Potsie Weber, along with Howard's Richie Cunningham, Don Most's Ralph Malph and Henry Winkler's Fonzie, among the best-known characters of the era, viewed each week by nearly 70 million people. Williams soaked up lessons on set from Marshall and Howard and has now amassed 43 credits to date as a director, in addition to his 100+ acting credits. He now lives in Ojai, a place he's been visiting for decades and regards as a haven and sanctuary from the manic pace of the outside world. He's announced his bid for Mayor and is committed to bringing a collaborative, cooperative style to Ojai's pressing issues such as affordable housing, fire and drought threats and a spirit of civic goodwill and trust. We also talked about glider piloting, fishing with Henry Winkler, setting up innovative school programs, Annie Besant and much more. We did not talk about the Shoeless Joe Jackson and Black Sox scandal of 1919, the Haber-Bosch method nor lost metallurgic technologies of the Bronze Age.

I know of no one savvier about getting it done and moving forward than actor, director, inventor, innovator, mentor, treasured friend, and Golden Globe Nominee for Happy Days, Anson Williams. Anson's wisdom has been invaluable to me, and he shared loads of it with us. And, fantastic stories––how he created opportunities as a kid, and then with Garry Marshall, Ron Howard, Steven Speilberg, QVC, the IPs he's developing now, and his lifesaving, Alert Drops, created with his 2nd cousin Henry Heimlich.
Anson shared about the people who've shaped and inspired him, and a couple of examples of how he's paid it forward––something he's done all of his life and continues to do to this day, including wisdom for me––for us––shared here. Like, how to get off the couch and out of pandemic quicksand, the value of perceived failure, the three most important words (and why they are), and give what you want to get… these were just a few of the life tool gems Anson shared. Anson leads by example, just yesterday he was awarded Best Director for Viral Vingenttes by the Crown Point International Film Festival. The film also won Best Narrative Feature and Best Ensemble. Along with Donny Most, Anson's long-time best friend since Happy Days, Anson won The Best Acting Duo Award from the International Short Film Festival for Harvest Time, which he also directed. Anson never lets grass grow, he's always got all the burners cooking. Thanks to his not so gentle nudges, this show and I, continue to shift. I always hear Anson in my head nudging me forward. Today, thanks to the power of his example of mentorship, I tried something new, broke my routine, to shake things up and move forward. Oh, I still complained, but progress, not perfection. I couldn't love and adore this man, more. I'm inspired anew and trust you will be, too.
