For '90s kids, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were the dominant force in twin fiction. Over the years, other generations have been fascinated by characters like Wrigley's Doublemint Twins, or Hayley Mills and Lindsay Lohan in the 1961 and 1998 versions of the film "The Parent Trap," respectively. Twins are rich narrative terrain and raise questions about individuality. "They're a natural kind of hook for a bunch of questions about human life in general," said Helena de Bres, a professor at Wellesley College and author of "How to Be Multiple: The Philosophy of Twins." Her identical twin, Julia de Bres, illustrated the book. Together, they explored the twin experience through a philosophical lens and examined free will, love, and personal identity. "I think people are fascinated because we're just kind of cute and unusual and trippy, but also because we raise these really big questions just by standing there," Helena de Bres said. Stories about twins go back to antiquity: Castor and Pollux, Romulus and Remus, and Hercules and Iphicles all represent binaries that describe human nature. "You can use twins narratively to explore a whole range of different contrasts, or different ways of living or being," Helena de Bres said. "So they're just really useful for getting at some of these questions. They're also easily used for comic purposes — you know, that whole switcheroo thing [of] twins switching places. Identity confusion is really ideal for theatrical treatments." Whether twins fit neatly into those binaries is a different story. Helena de Bres said she believes that twin binaries are a created to differentiate between children who people can't tell apart. "We're going to decide, maybe randomly, maybe on a little bit of a clue that this is the quiet one. And then the quiet one takes that up and starts acting into that role. And it is a self-fulfilling prophecy," she said. Guest: Helend de Bres, author of "How to Be Multiple: The Philosophy of Twins" Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! We finish out our spooky Halloween month with an episode on the Day of the Dead where nobody actually dies (uh, spoiler). It's M. Night Shyamalan's 2024 movie Trap! Cooper (Josh Hartnett) is a mild-mannered serial killer fireman taking his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert for Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan), her favorite pop star. Through some snooping and one very gregarious merch salesman Cooper finds out the entire concert is a trap to catch him, the Butcher! Who chops people up into little pieces. The Butcher must find a way to escape using his affably awkward skills as a professional liar. Will he be able to escape? Will his family find out? Will Agent 47 complete his mission? Did Shyamalan really cast Hayley Mills because she was in The Parent Trap? Is Your Stupid Minds done with the “bad” movie premise? You'll have to listen to find out!
This whole episode is a trap. In it, we join Josh Hartnett scholar and The Film Stage gentleman Dan Mecca to dissect the ins and outs of M. Night Shyamalan's Trap. We talk about: baby bangs, Hartnett always being a little bit weird, the tooth gap, Sleeping with the Enemy's hand towels, auteur theory, one good part in The Village, Hayley Mills on the walkie-talkie, and more. Saleka Night Shyamalan makes her film debut in M. Night Shyamalan's Trap! Saleka is M. Night's daughter in real life, but in the movie, she plays fictional popstar Lady Raven. Her concert is attended by serial killer Josh Hartnett and his daughter played by Ariel Donoghue. Hayley Mills of The Parent Trap (1961) fame is trying to track down Hartnett and trap him at the concert. It's another head-scratching psychological thriller from master of suspense M. Night Shyamalan.

M. Night Shyamalan as of 2024 is now hit or miss with his movies. There hasn't been any further “classics” in his filmography over the last two decades, but he's had some fairly enjoyable productions. His latest is called TRAP (2024) and has received a large theatrical release from Warner Brothers Pictures.Riley (Ariel Donoghue) and her dad Cooper (Josh Hartnett) are attending a Lady Raven concert in Philadelphia. When Cooper notices that a very large and present law enforcement attendance, he asks a vendor what's up. There was a tip that the serial killer known as the Butcher is in attendance. Soon a cat-and-mouse game begins where everyone, including the talent on stage, has to make decisions that will save their own skins as well as others.Shyamalan directs from a script that he wrote. Besides an absolutely fantastic performance by Josh Hartnett, the film also stars Hayley Mills, Saleka Night Shyamalan, and Alison Pill. With an interesting premise, based off the mixed reviews by audiences and writers alike, the question of its success depends on the individual viewer. Your co-hosts take a look at this recently released theatrical feature and give their thoughts.

It's a thriller. It's a Josh Hartnett vehicle. It's…a comedy? But is it the kind of trap you want to fall into, or the kind you want to avoid? After a long time off, we return with M. Night Shyalaman's new thriller, Trap, in which Josh Hartnett's doting dad, Cooper, takes his daughter to see her favourite pop star at a massive arena gig, but finds himself surrounded and hunted by the FBI. We discuss the ways in which Shyamalan gives Cooper opportunities for escape but closes them off; the unusually disappointing lack of imagination and expression in some of the visual design and shot selection (something we're used to finding so interesting from Shyamalan); the attempt to sell a psychological background to Cooper, which is somehow neither intelligent nor daft enough; the production of the music and Saleka Night Shyamalan's performance as Lady Raven; Mike's fickleness in choosing whom to root for; and José's joy at seeing Hayley Mills. But despite picking at flaw after flaw, as we always do, we had a great time in Trap, and recommend it. Recorded on 9th August 2024.
It's been awhile since we've seen Josh Hartnett star in a prominent movie, but after his prominent role in “Oppenheimer”, he's back and starring in “Trap.” This is the latest movie from M. Night Shyamalan, the famous director of “The Sixth Sense”, “Unbreakable” and “Signs.” In “Trap”, Hartnett plays Cooper, a Dad who's taking his daughter to a big concert for a mega-popular singer named Lady Raven. Once he gets into the concert, he notices a massive police and FBI presence. Cooper later finds out that the concert has been set as an elaborate trap to catch a serial killer called “The Butcher.” Now he's really stressed, and if you watch the trailers or the movie, you'll know why. Also, there's a FBI profiler there to describe all the moves The Butcher will make to try to get out of the trap and what law enforcement should then do. All the while, Cooper has to be a good Dad and enjoy the concert with his daughter, who is excited to be there for Lady Raven. As the movie goes on, the trap gets tighter and tighter as law enforcement rules out more and more suspects and closes in. Will The Butcher be caught? How many will die in the process? Is it worth even seeing this movie to find out? Check out this episode to see if it is worth seeing. “Trap” also stars Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Alison Pill, Hayley Mills, Jonathan Langdon, Mark Bacolcol, Marnie McPhail, Kid Cudi, Russ, Marcia Bennett, Vanessa Smythe, M. Night Shyamalan, Lochlan Miller, Steve Boyle, David D'Lancy Wilson, James Gomez and Nadine Hyatt. Night Shyamalan, "Trap," starring Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills & Alison Pill. Shyamalan is one of the world's most polarizing yet fascinating filmmakers, and his latest is no different as it has divided audiences everywhere. Is it the taut thriller its trailers made it out to be, or is it a terribly plotted catastrophe with silly dialogue that writes itself into a trap by the time it reaches the third act? Tune in as the team discusses the writing, performances, suspense, the craziness of the third act, Shyamalan's direction, and more in their SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! We're back with another entry in our Double Feature series! This is where we talk about two films that have some sort of connection (either in reality or in our minds). This episode is pretty straightforward, as Ashley & Matt discuss two 1960s Disney movies starring Hayley Mills!
Send us a Text Message. The society convenes for their summer series, looking back at some TV movies Disney has released through the years. This week, the society watches the 1986 TV movie The Parent Trap II, starring Hayley Mills, Hayley Mills, and Tom Skerritt. The original Parent Trap was one of our favorite movies - it was so well thought-out and entertaining, surely this one will live up to it as a proper sequel, right? Right?Follow us @medfieldfilm on social media for more updates
Front Row Classics is traveling back to the Disney Studios in the 1960s. Brandon is joined by author, Morgan Matson to discuss 1961's The Parent Trap. Morgan is a New York Times bestselling novelist, who also happens to be a film buff. Brandon and Morgan celebrate the charm and fun that keeps this movie timeless 6 decades later. We celebrate the remarkable performance of Hayley Mills (and Hayley Mills) as well as the star power of Maureen O'Hara and Brian Keith. The stacked supporting cast of legendary character actors also help the film achieve its prominent place in Disney history.
An encore presentation of our interview with actress Hayley Mills. Also children's book author Debra Westgate-Silva.

TVC 644.6a: Greg Ehrbar discusses the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release of The Daydreamer (1966), a feature-length live-action and Animagic-animated adaptation of some of the most famous fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen that was produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, and which featured the talents of Hayley Mills, Tallulah Bankhead, Jack Guilford, Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, Boris Karloff, Burl Ives, Victor Borge, Terry-Thomas, Ed Wynn, Patty Duke, and Robert Goulet. Though unsuccessful at the box office at the time it was originally released, The Daydreamer, in many respects, served as a precursor to the many television specials that Rankin-Bass produced throughout the 1970s. While there is some disagreement between us about which version of the Parent Trap is superior Kat has agreed to tip her hat to the original for March Madness and reluctantly admit that the original Parent Trap from 1961 is the superior film. Yes, reluctantly we must admit...as charming as Lindsay Lohan is and as perfect as Dennis Quaid's smile is....Hayley Mills and Brian Keith just bring something magical to the screen. In terms of older "live action" disney flicks this one is probably one of the better known ones in the bunch. We had so much to go over in this film and we hope you enjoy revisiting it with us for this weeks March Madness Top Chart Tuesday. DISCLAIMER This episode was originally recorded under the old podcast show name and contains "quacks" of swear words. Be kind...we have learned a lot since then.

"Natural Magick" Formed in the mid '90s in London, Kula Shaker emerged as one of the most dynamic and engaging musical acts around. Mixing psychedelia with traditional Indian music and pop, Kula Shaker tore it up right out of the gate, with their debut album K hitting #1 and making them immediate superstars. Over the course of their career they played Glastonbury, T in the Park, the V Festival, and they supported Oasis at their legendary Knebworth shows. Singer Crispian Mills is the grandson of the Academy Award Winning actor Sir John Mills and the son of director Roy Boulting and actress Hayley Mills, who you might remember from the 1961 film The Parent Trap. Mills got into ancient Sanskrit texts as a young man and carried their wisdom into his adulthood. He also got into psych music as well as The Doors. He's played with X-Ray Spex and appeared on the Prodigy's The Fat Of The Land album and when Kula Shaker were on hiatus, he played in a band called The Jeevas. Also, he's a writer and director; he wrote and helmed the Simon Pegg film A Fantastic Fear Of Everything and has other projects in the works. With Kula Shaker he's put out six marvelous albums, including K, Pilgrim's Progress, 1st Congregational Church of Eternal Love and Hugs and their brand new one, Natural Magick. A riveting return to form, Natural Magick finds the original Kula Shaker lineup reunited and the results are stunning--this album is an energetic blast of psych pop redolent with rich hooks, textured instrumentation and melodies galore.
