Did Allan Holdsworth Make Headless Guitars Cool?

Here at 100 Guitarists, we thought we knew a lot about Allan Holdsworth. But after we did our deepest of dives, we only emerged with more questions: Was Holdsworth the John Coltrane of the guitar? Was he the quintessential fusion guitarist? Why isn't there a Holdsworth signature Synthaxe? And how do you read his weird chord charts? We might not have all the answers—and when it comes to his chord charts, we definitely do not—but we're taking some big swings. We also share our top picks, which includes Tony Williams rippers, slick Ted Templeman-production, and a Beatles cover. In our current listening segment, we're talking about a Wayne Horvitz/Bill Frisell archival release and Jersey Boys.Sponsored by Voodoo Lab: https://voodoolab.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. Vortex duo Sam and Jason settle in for a ramble heavy episode of Click Vortex, streamed live on the WASTOIDS YouTube channel Wednesday, May 10th. For his segment, Sam opens up with some primo Satanic panic, examining the hidden messages of Jeff Lynne and ELO, and the Trinity Broadcasting Network's Led Zeppelin reel-to-reel demonstrations. In the second half of the show, Jason asks: how many Star Trek tie-in novels is too many Star Trek tie-in novels, and explores the weird, wild world of the SynthAxe—an ultra-expensive synth that looks (kinda) like a guitar.

Allan Holdsworth, a phenomenal guitarist who was considered one of the best in the world by Eddie Van Halen, Carlos Santana & Joe Satriani, joins us on one of his last interviews in March, 2017 - before his passing on April 15th, 2017.  You'll find his fusion-based guitar work featured in groups including Soft Machine and U.K. Allan's music is transcendent of many genres as his style would open up new dimensions of sound no matter what he was playing - many times utilizing the SynthAxe.  Some of his many collaborations were with YES co-founder, Bill Bruford and jazz drummer Tony Williams.  On this episode, we'll talk about his brand new compilation releases and much more.  In our "Spotlight" is Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie, who have a brand new album out with Fleetwood Mac - Mick Fleetwood & John McVie joining them.

Jeff Floro's All About Guitar

Way back when I did my Senior Recital at USC, I had the privilege to use a prototype pitch to voltage converter, monophonic, that eventually became the 360 systems guitar synth that Lee Ritenour used on his legendary album "Captain Fingers." Later we saw such instruments like the SynthAxe, used by Allan Holdsworth and one of the first mass produced guitar synth, the Arp Avatar. Later we saw the Roland system come out, which has been the most popular guitar synth controller system. But now we have You Rock Guitars, who gives us new technology and makes a controller that is as elaborate as the SynthAxe, but at a much more affordable price. We are joined by electronics engineer and inventor, Cliff Elion, and he shows us a new recording, composition, and performance tool for guitar players. Using the power of MIDI, guitarists can now explore electronic music, and do it affordably. Joining me for the show is Bo Astrup. Bo is a recording engineer and mixer, having mixed Jim Stubblefield's recent award winning "Encantado" album. Bo is the one who turned me onto the You Rock system and he is well versed in electronic music and MIDI. Also joining me is synth guitarist user Jean Pierre Durand, of Incendio. Jean Pierre uses a Roland system live and in studio with Incendio. Join us as we take an in depth look at this amazing controller!

As percussionist and member of the Grammy Award-winning jazz quartet Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Roy “Futureman” Wooten, loves walking on the high wire of musical experimentation. And, if you’re familiar with the music of the Flecktones, you know exactly what we’re talking about. Futureman, Victor Wooten (Roy’s brother), Béla Fleck, and Jeff Coffin have been creating music from the inside out for twenty years, and the music they create is like nothing else out there. Much more than a musician and composer, Futureman also is an inventor. He plays a modified MIDI-based, SynthAxe dubbed a “Drumitar” that triggers digital percussion modules. The sounds, textures, time signatures, and overall rhythms of his musical creations border on genius. His amazing musical knowledge on theory, composition and rhythm, along with his vast knowledge of music history, will leave you speechless. Go get some java and settle back for our longest interview”! We didn’t cut anything, because we felt that it was all important. Inside MusiCast welcomes Futureman.
