00:00-20:00: 2024 Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer, DMB saxophonist, composer and educator Jeff Coffin joins the show to chat music career, his new album, Ear Up Records, being elected to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, what he and Dave Matthews Band have learned from each other, his musical message to the next generation, his favorite instruments and styles to play and more.
Ryan Middagh is not only a composer, arranger, baritone saxophonist and educator, as Chair of the Department of Jazz and Global Music at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music, he has delivered all that, and more, in his latest release called “Tenor Madness.” This album is a love letter to both the saxophone itself, and the abundance of saxophonists found in the vibrant and growing Nashville music scene. To bring the music to this release, Ryan gathered together an amazing group of his talented friends and saxophone colleagues like Jeff Coffin, Joel Frahm, Don Aliquo, Jovan Quallo, Alex Graham, vocalist Jenna McLean, trombonists Jeremy Wilson, and special guest Roy Agee, as well as members the Ryan Middagh Jazz Orchestra. Join me for a conversation about the development of this stunning album, “Tenor Madness,” and the man behind the music. If you're like me, a fan of big band music and have a keen interest in the sound of the saxophone as a stand-out instrument to deliver that dynamic genre of music, then you are in for a treat with this episode.

Band of Other Brothers is a stellar, multi genre supergroup whose members boast incredible associations with a Who's Who of A-listers. There's pianist Jeff Babko (Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sheryl Crow), saxophonist and woodwind wizard Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones), drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, John Mayer), guitarist Nir Felder (Esperanza Spalding, Jack DeJohnette), and bassist, vocalist Will Lee (Late Show with David Letterman, The Brecker Brothers). While they've joined forces before, this is their first holiday release. It's called “This Year At Christmas” on Ear Up records, and offers Christmas standards delivered in a unique, and even unconventional manner, by this all-star group of multi Grammy®️ winning musicians. The album also features two very special guest vocalists, as well as Keith Carlock's own Carlock Family Choir, all highlighted by an amazing string ensemble that offers the perfect complement the joubilant selection of tunes. My guests for this fun and more than occasionally frenetic conversation are Jeff Babko, Jeff Coffin, Nir Felder and Will Lee. Drummer Keith Carlock was tending to the reindeer and sadly couldn't join in the Christmas chaos. Join me for a whimsical journey through the backstory behind this one-of-a-kind holiday release.

Jennifer Madsen is a prized fixture on performing stages of the West. A lifelong singer and actress, her early career included being a cast member of Brigham Young University's famed performing group the Young Ambassadors. That experience founded her love of the art and afforded her the chance to sing, dance, and act for audiences across the globe. Using her strong foundational understanding for the craft, Jennifer left BYU and began to formally instruct students in all areas of performing. Her students from these early days have gone on to lead successful careers as Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning artists. She has had several students on American Idol and its predecessor, Star Search. One such student even went on to become a Star Search season finale winner. Her celebrated instruction continues to this day, as a former voice and musical theatre instructor at Utah Valley University and currently as part of Snow College's award-winning music department. Jennifer Madsen studied voice with Jeri Clinger and big band vocalist from Stan Kenton's orchestra, William “Smiling Bill” Stoker. Her recent studies include spending several summers in New York City completing her professor's certification in the Margolis Method for Acting. Her continued studies in this methodology infuse her vocal performance studio with techniques and tools for helping musicians and performers to connect viscerally with their music, lyrics and performance. Jennifer's accomplishments run deep as a producer, director, studio session singer and choreographer. Some of her more recent productions include The Sound of Music (Musical Director/Choreographer) at Robert Redford's renowned Sundance Summer Theater; Inside the Outside (Music Producer) with Grammy award winning saxophonist, Jeff Coffin of the Dave Mathews Band (partially recorded on her musical tour to Cuba,) Don't Look Down (Music Producer); the award-winning independent film Masque (Music Production); and various projects with BYU Broadcasting (Music Producer). Jennifer's recognition for such work includes multiple Downbeat Music Awards and several Utah Best of State awards for her work with Caleb Chapman's Crescent Super Band. She recently participated in the Essentially Ellington competition at Jazz at the Lincoln Center where her long time student, Isabella Johnson, was awarded outstanding vocalists. Aside from her many lauded achievements, Jennifer has never lost sight of the passion rooted in all of her life's work – performing what she loves for the people she loves. She's had the privilege of doing so with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra, the Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra, Salt Lake Choral Artist, the Utah Valley Symphony, and on numerous albums including work with Kenneth Cope. Recently, Jennifer completed a lifelong goal of performing at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City where she sang at the famous Dizzy's Jazz Club to the delight of fans, friends, and family. Jennifer is a sought after clinician and presents vocal and performance workshops all over the world.

Adam Chase has been playing music all his life. He and his brother, Matthew Chase, headed the band Black Eyed Susan from high school through college that caught the attention of so many ears. This allowed them the opportunity to play with artists like Aerosmith, Crosby, Still & Nash, Wyclef Jean and many more. Since then he developed talent as music director, composer, and band leader and continues to create incredible tribute projects like Jazz is Phish, The James Brown Dance Party, and A Family Affair (tribute to Sly & The Family Stone). He also created Dab Sessions to celebrate improvisation. These projects have allowed him to collaborate with some of the best musicians of our era including Jeff Sipe, Adam Deitch, Domi and JD Beck, Jonathan Scales, Jeff Coffin, Felix Pastorius, Clyde Stubblefield, Dennis Chambers, Billy Martin, and Claude Coleman, Jr. The list goes on.After sitting down to talk with him it became clear to me that he has been able to work with so many greats, not just because he's a great musician (and he is), but also because he has focused on developing and cultivating relationships. It's clear he's not just in it for himself. Check out his latest band, Chess Club, where he and Danny Darress inject humor into well crafted melodies and rhythms. Mars Williams, the incredibly talented saxophonist best known for his work with Liquid Soul and Psychedelic Furs, was diagnosed with ampullary cancer just under a year ago. The cancer is awful, brutal and unforgiving, and his friends and collaborators are rallying behind him. Music for Mars is a benefit happening 11/25 at Metro, featuring Liquid Soul members, Jesse De La Pena, members of Psychedelic Furs, Jeff Coffin of DMB, Richard Fortus of Guns N' Roses and Ike Reilly. Ike Reilly joined me to talk about the event, and the impact of Mars' music and personality. Mars Williams is a tremendous talent, and Ike drives the point home with stories and memories. This All That's Jazz episode is a conversation with three diverse and virtuosic musical masters - renowned saxophonist Jeff Coffin, venerated drummer Jordan Perlson and bass legend Viktor Krauss - have joined together for a nine-track debut of all original music that's been described as “a thrilling sonic odyssey that showcases undeniable musicianship and boundless artistic expression.” Coffin, Perlson and Krauss first started playing together in 2020. The connection between them was evident instantly. During the pandemic, the three Nashville based musicians formed a social pod, and made playing together a regularity as long as they were safe to do so. Using this unexpected time, the trio decided to record at Krauss' home studio to officially document this special collaboration, eventually settling on seven compositions and two solo works. The result is their first album as a trio, self- titled ‘Coffin /Perlson/Krauss.
Interview with guitarist Mike Baggetta on his new album with mssv mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Baggetta has had the pleasure of working all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations, including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. Philips' Numinous, Imani Uzuri, Viktor Krauss, David Wax Museum, Julian Lage, Jon Irabagon, Jerome Harris, Tom Harrell, Eivind Opsvik, Jeremy Udden, and Ruth Brown among many others. mikebaggetta.com https://mainsteamstopvalve.com Tickets to OCT 7th mssv at Beachland Tavern Cleveland OH https://www.beachlandballroom.com/e/13205278/mssv-c-level/
When this episode was recorded, the writers and actors strikes were both still going strong with no end in sight, so resident keyboardist for the Jimmy Kimmell Show, Jeff Babko, was able to find time in his normally very busy schedule to rap with me. In fact, the Kimmell show is just a piece of his crowded schedule, which includes being the touring pianist on stage with Steve Martin and Martin Short, in addition to composing for movie scores like the new Weird Al biopic, Toy Story 4, Encanto, but also recording with James Taylor, Jason Mraz, Shelby Lynne, Simon Philips, Sheryl Crow-- not counting the folks he's played with on Kimmell. He's a funny man, driven to make music with whomever and in whatever forum is available, but usually includes incredible musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Coffin, Matt Chamberlain, Mark Isham and many more. He's a podcast host for the Caffeinated Keyboardist, owns his own studio Tudor Tones and is generally just busy because what in the hell else is there in this life but to make music. He's got a new record called The Libretto Show with bassist David Piltch and is generally just ready to rip at all times.

Brian Mesko was born into a family of musicians, and raised in Little Rock, AR, Mesko began piano lessons at age 8, moving to guitar at age 10. By 12 he was playing drums, and he picked up the bass at age 14. As a teen Brian was gigging professionally, and even played drums on a short tour in Turkey at age 18. While still in high school he studied Jazz Theory & Ensemble at UALR under Michael Carenbauer (who studied under Pat Metheny at Berklee). Taking these credits on to MTSU, Brian completed a bachelor's degree in Recording Industry. Mesko lived in the Nashville area from 1997 – 2005 and played with such international jazz greats as Les McCann, Tony Monaco, Dr. Lonnie Smith, John Jorgensen and Jeff Coffin. After moving to central Virginia in 2005, Brian has been privileged to work with such jazz artists as Robert Jospe, Butch Taylor, Dane Alderson, John D'earth, Bobby Read, Charles Owens, Jonah Kane-West, Liz Barnes, any many more. Brian formed The Rootdowns organ trio with members of Butcher Brown, DJ Williams Projekt, The Big Payback, and Skydog, and they released their debut album, "Songs With Friends" in 2013. In 2015 he started The Danktet, an instrumental trio whose collective influences create a unique blend of jazz, funk, rock, pop, reggae, blues, and R&B. With Australian native Dane Alderson of the Yellow Jackets on bass, and multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Forrest Young on drums, they released their first album, "One Thing Right" in 2016. Aside from his own original projects, Brian has since joined several local projects, playing guitar and/or bass with the Robert Jospe Express, Lenny Marcus, Terry Brown Ascension Project, The Ambassador, Mojo Parker, Melissa and the Growlers, The Meskos Electric Revue, Jstop Latin Soul and Andrew Winn. Brian currently resides with his wife and son in Roanoke, VA working as a session player, performer, and guitar professor/ensemble director at the University of Lynchburg. Tim Martin started his solo career at the ripe age of 16 playing every Friday and Saturday evening at a restaurant called the Olde Tinker Mill Inn. It was a formal dining area upstairs with a pizza and beer meeting place downstairs. He would play for the diners upstairs during dinner then move downstairs for the later, livelier crowd. Building a song list of artists such as James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, CSN&Y, Eagles, and originals he developed his style. Getting paid 15 dollars a night and free pizza seemed like a good deal to the teenaged Tim. What this job did was help him learn how to be comfortable and entertaining on stage and find what kind of tunes worked with different audiences. 42 years later he is still going strong as ever. Tim has played and still works in clubs, resorts, festivals, concerts, and private functions across southwest Virginia such as The Hotel Roanoke, Wintergreen Resort, Primeland Resort, Snowshow, Greenbrier, Homestead and more. He plays local Roanoke clubs such as The Quarter, Awful Arthurs, Annie Moore's Tavern, Brambleton Deli and more. He has shared the stage and opened for artist such as Savoy Brown, Vern Gosdin, Jonathan Edwards, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Little River Band, Southern Culture on The Skids and more. He has released two albums over the years. Real Life Dreamers in 1992 with his duo partner Mark Wilbourn and Wishes in 2000, both all original songs written by Tim.

Inside MusiCast rings in the new year with our first guest for 2023, guitarist Dean Parks! Dean is no stranger to liner notes geeks around the world and was home grown in the state of Texas. In fact, he was a member of the “One O'clock Lab Band'' at North Texas State while in college. Whatever it is that's in the water at North Texas, he drank it – along with other top musicians who have come out of that amazing music program - like David Hungate, several Snarky Puppy band members, Norah Jones, Jeff Coffin, Don Henley, Lyle Mays, and others. Fast forward to today and we find Dean still engaged with contributing his talents to new projects from Lyle Lovett, LeAnn Rimes, Herbie Hancock, Diane Warren, and so many others. This only confirms that after decades of playing LA sessions, Parks still remains an A-list guitarist. His iconic work for Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, America, Streisand and so many other great projects speaks for itself. Today we'll help fill in some of the gaps of his amazing career. Inside MusiCast is glad to welcome Dean Parks.
Mike's singular and very personal musical style seeks to blur the lines between song and solo, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. The press says this approach is “…beguilingly atmospheric…” (Time Out New York) and that “Baggetta's music is quietly transgressive… Even when he plays a lot of notes, his playing can sound almost static, as though ideas were being snagged out of thin air.” (Hartford Courant) Baggetta's most recent release is the album Everywhen We Go, his second album with drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Mike Watt on the BIG EGO label. He also leads the band mssv, is a post-genre power trio featuring the iconoclastic rhythm team of drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Mike Watt. They have just released their self-titled debut studio album, Main Steam Stop Valve, on BIG EGO Records, following up 2020's Live Flowers album on Striped Light Records, recorded live in Philadelphia, PA and Northampton, MA (with special guest J Mascis), as well as 3 limited edition 7” releases recorded solely over quarantine, featuring guest artists Petra Haden and Nels Cline. After completing their first full US tour in spring 2022 mssv recorded their second full length album for release next year. This band grew out of Baggetta's first album for BIG EGO, Wall of Flowers, which featured a reimagining of his music alongside bassist Mike Watt and drummer Jim Keltner. Baggetta has had the pleasure to work all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. Philips' Numinous, Imani Uzuri, Viktor Krauss, David Wax Museum, Julian Lage, Jon Irabagon, Jerome Harris, Tom Harrell, Eivind Opsvik, Jeremy Udden, and Ruth Brown among many others. Everywhen We Go - the new album from Mike Baggetta / Jim Keltner / Mike Watt - is available for pre-order HEREOfficially out Nov. 18 on BIG EGO Records, you can reserve your copy of the limited edition 1st vinyl pressing of 500, featuring a hand-stamped foil number, and get an immediate download of the title track/single now, and the rest of the album on release day. Bandcamp: Klawo (CNC014) | Klawo (bandcamp.com) Klawo's origins date back to the second half of 2019, when Konstanty Kostka was asked to arrange his “Flądra EP” (Latarnia Rec.) for his upcoming gig organized by Coastline Northern Cuts – with a live band instead of his beloved sampler. After four months of research and first collective rehearsals it turned out that these arrangements and the energy of an emerging project gave “Flądra” a totally fresh groove. Spontaneity of jazz improvisation resulted in an appetite for further cooperation and making new stuff together. In their own words: “Klawo is made up of good friends who spend their daily lives roaming the corridors of the Music Academy in Gdańsk… or hanging out on the beach”. To be precise, Klawo consists of: Alicja Sobstyl – flute, vocal Malina Midera – keys, synths Karol Tchórz – trumpet Tomasz Rafalski – drums Artur Szalsza – bass Konstanty Kostka – keys, synths THIS IS A FREE PODCAST. On today's episode, Scott interviews Paul Hanson, a world renowned bassoonist, who plays in the genres of classical, jazz and contemporary styles with equal proficiency, and is the pioneer of the electric bassoon. Paul has recorded and/or performed with drummer, Billy Cobham, banjo player, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, saxophonist, Jeff Coffin, and singer/songwriter, Jon Batiste, just to name a few. In addition, he also plays various saxophones and has recorded and/or performed with chart topping artists that include Boz Scaggs, The Temptations, Tower of Power, and was the featured tenor sax soloist on Eddie Money's 1986 rock hit, “Take Me Home Tonight”. In 2008, Paul was invited to create his own role as the electric improvising bassoonist in Cirque Du Soleil's ZED, a resident show at the Tokyo Disney Resort, that ran from 2008-2011. Besides performing, my guest artist has been a dedicated bassoon and saxophone teacher for the past forty years. Nir Felder has been called “the next big jazz guitarist” by NPR and hailed by The New York Times as a “whiz kid.” Will Lee is the Grammy-winning Musician's Hall of Fame member you've likely seen and heard playing bass as part of Paul Shaffer's World's Most Dangerous Band on David Letterman's late-night talk shows. Currently, Felder and Lee are touring together with drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, Sting), Jeff Coffin on saxophones and woodwinds (Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones), and keyboardist Jeff Babko (James Taylor, Toto) as Band of Other Brothers. On April 20, the Other Brothers made a stop at Nashville's City Winery, supporting their second album, Look Up. Lee and Felder took a break pre-soundcheck to usher PG's John Bohlinger through their rigs. [Brought to you by https://ddar.io/XSE.RR (D'Addario XS Electric Strings)]

Jordan Perlson has spanned about as wide a stylistic reach as one can imagine. Be it with jazz legends Seamus Blake and Gary Burton, folk heroes Alison Brown and Missy Raines, reggae giants Matisyahu and Trevor Hall, cutting edge music innovators like Becca Stevens, Snarky Puppy, and Jeff Coffin, progressive innovators Adrian Belew or Kaki King, or fusion megastar Hiromi, Jordan has become a known force in these many circles. With credits on 100+ recordings, including national and international ad campaigns, Jordan is as at home in the studio as he is on stage. An author of 2 books for Mel Bay publishing, Jordan's books have been translated into several languages and are used the world round by teachers and students of many levels. In this episode, Jordan talks about: Why he moved to Nashville after 12 years in New York Curating musical situations that line up with momentum in a direction, even if the end goal is abstract Being more intentional about not just what he says yes to, but why he says yes How New York shaped his personality, and how that shapes his musical identity Trusting that his instincts and intentions will make good music, even if the execution isn't quite perfect His "asynchronous" drum coaching approach to private teaching
