What happens when one guitar god pays tribute to another… and it backfires? In this episode, we dive deep into the surprising fallout between Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton — two of rock's most legendary players. It all started with a jam session in 1983, featured on Brian May's Star Fleet Project, where Eddie and Brian recorded a slow blues track called “Blues Breaker” — dedicated to Clapton himself. But Clapton hated it. He called it “horrible.” He said Eddie and Brian “can't play” the blues. And he delivered a scathing verdict: “If he was that tuned into me and missed that point… then he missed the whole point.” This video explores the tension between technical brilliance and emotional expression, the strict “rules” of blues as Clapton saw them, and how a friendship built on admiration ended with hurt feelings, harsh words, and never speaking again. We also revisit Dave Davies of The Kinks and his own complicated feelings about being imitated — including a jab at Eddie Van Halen's version of “You Really Got Me.” From tribute to tension, from respect to rivalry — this is the untold story behind one of rock's coldest guitar feuds.

Nothing can beat a charismatic frontman. Then again, there are some Side Players that give them a run for their money. I mean… who is Bono without Edge? Freddie Mercury without Brian May? Roth or Haggar without Eddie Van Halen? Robert Plant without Jimmy Page? Anthony Kiedis without John Frusciante? Bon Scott or Brian Johnson without Angus & Malcolm? Or Mick Jagger without Keith Richards.Of course I would be remiss not to mention the few charismatic Frontmen that are also ripping guitarists. Like Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, Either of the Vaughn Brothers, Derek Trucks, Prince, Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins, Mark Knopfler, Vince Gill… and lets just say ALL of the Kings. But which is it better to be, a Frontman or a Side Player? Can you be both? Which carries more stress? Which carries more fame? Does one roll have more significance than the other? Who has the bigger influence on the sound? If we could give some advice, what would it be? When I think of a band, which member comes to mind? And… job security… did I just get fired?Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Lloyd, on the Tweed Couch.
BulletBoys exploded onto the scene in 1988 with their self-titled debut, produced by Ted Templeman (famed for his work with Van Halen and David Lee Roth). The album went gold, fueled by hits like “Smooth Up in Ya” and a blistering cover of The O'Jays' “For the Love of Money.” With comparisons to Van Halen swirling, it was no surprise when Marq eventually struck up a friendship with Eddie Van Halen himself — stories of which he shares with candor and admiration.Torien opens up not just about Eddie, but also his encounters with others like Dave Grohl, members of KISS, and many more. With nearly four decades in the music business, he remains fiercely independent, constantly evolving the band and touring .Beyond nostalgia, BulletBoys continue to bring new material and fresh energy to the stage — with Marq Torien's signature vocal firepower leading the charge.
Michael Anthony Opens Up About His One Big Regret: Van Halen Deserved a Thunderous Farewell, Not a Whimper For Michael Anthony, former Van Halen bassist, the ride with one of rock's most electrifying bands was nothing short of a dream — until the ending, which still haunts him. In a recent episode of Get on the Bus, Anthony revealed his biggest career regret: how Van Halen's legendary run came to an unceremonious close. “It should have gone out with a fricking bang that shook the world,” he said, “and it was more like a whimper, the way everything ended.” Though he described the band's heyday as “living the dream” and even “a fairy tale,” the behind-the-scenes reality was far from perfect. As years went by, tensions and personal rifts—particularly with guitarist Eddie Van Halen—created a lasting fracture. “Unfortunately, Eddie and I never made amends,” Anthony shared. “We had some issues, and I'm sure that if he had not passed when he did, we would've reconciled… we would've calmed all that stuff down.” In a bittersweet twist, Anthony revealed that there had been talks of a massive reunion tour featuring the original members — a true full-circle moment in the making. “I talked to Wolfgang [Van Halen], and he said there were plans to bring everyone back together,” Anthony recalled. “At that point in Ed's life, he was more like, ‘Hey, the past is the past... water under the bridge.'” But time ran out. Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020, and with him went the final chance for the ultimate Van Halen reunion. Now, years later, Anthony holds onto the music, the memories — and the what ifs. “That's the only regret I have,” he said. “We were supposed to go out with thunder. Not silence.” Michael Anthony - The TRUE Van Halen Story You've NEVER Heard! https://youtu.be/oKzjBY-OarA?si=TXZlTWyqxHjeu_tB EVH Van Halen guitar keychains - https://www.vanhalenstore.com/page/VH/Little-Guitars/KEYSET-456

On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we talk about Sammy Hagar's bold invitation to Wolfgang Van Halen to join him for a special Van Halen-themed residency, the dream that inspired his emotional tribute to Eddie, and why he still holds out hope for more musical magic—even without Alex Van Halen. Sammy Hagar is turning up the heat again—and this time, he's calling out to Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang, with a heartfelt and electrifying offer: “Hey Wolfie, let's do a residency someday—just one show of Van Halen songs!” In a new interview with WRIF, the Red Rocker didn't hold back his admiration for Wolfgang, praising the Mammoth WVH frontman for blazing his own trail. “He's not trying to be his dad, and I love that,” Hagar said with genuine pride. “Let that boy boogie!” Despite Wolfgang's past statements that he won't perform Van Halen songs live, Hagar is holding out hope for a one-night-only celebration. But that's not all. Sammy revealed something even more surreal—his new song Encore, Thank You, Goodnight was inspired by a dream he had where he wrote a song with Eddie Van Halen himself. “I had a friggin' dream and wrote a song with Eddie!” Sammy shared. “That's as real as it gets.” He describes the track as a final chapter, a spiritual jam session that gave him the closure he needed. “The ‘what if' is gone now. I feel good. Healthy, even.” The track features none other than Joe Satriani, who Sammy says completely captured Eddie's essence. “The intro… I don't even try to figure out what Joe's doing,” Hagar laughed. “I ain't torturing myself with that.” One person not involved? Alex Van Halen. “Al and I… we've got a problem,” Hagar admitted. “You'd have to ask him what it is. I don't know. But I knew he probably wouldn't be part of it.” Still, when asked if he regrets his time in Van Halen, Sammy didn't hesitate: “Oh, hell no! The only regret I have is that we didn't make more music. Eddie and I were just getting started. We were capable of so much more.” And as a bonus, Hagar revealed he'll be part of Black Sabbath's farewell show, originally planning to sing No More Tears until Ozzy Osbourne himself asked to sing Hagar's Rock Candy! So now? Sammy's cranking up the volume on Flying High Again. You won't want to miss this episode of Exclusively Van Halen—packed with heart, history, and one seriously rocking dream. #VanHalen #SammyHagar #WolfgangVanHalen #MammothWVH #EddieVanHalen #JoeSatriani #AlexVanHalen #OzzyOsbourne #BlackSabbath #RockNews #ExclusivelyVanHalen #JohnnyBeaneTV Want to create live streams like this? Send Steve a Text MessageWhat really holds most guitar players back? After teaching thousands of guitarists, I've discovered it's rarely about technical ability—it's about confidence. That feeling of certainty when you play, knowing who you are as a musician, and being comfortable in your own skin. The journey to guitar confidence follows five distinct phases, each building upon the last. It begins with curiosity—that moment when you hear Hendrix, Van Halen, or whoever your inspiration might be, and think "I want to do that!" This natural motivation fuels your early development. Next comes foundation building, where you develop the essential skills needed for your musical goals. This is where many players get distracted by "bright shiny objects" instead of focusing on the fundamentals that will truly advance their playing. The third phase—developing actual confidence—is where most guitarists get stuck. It requires something scary: being vulnerable enough to play for others and receive feedback. "I'll play with people once I'm better" becomes a perpetual excuse, creating a cycle where improvement stalls because you're not getting the feedback needed to grow. Breaking through this barrier transforms your playing.Once confidence develops, you enter the creative expression phase, where your playing begins to sound more human and personal. This naturally evolves into the final phase—musical identity. The liberating truth is that even guitar legends have limitations. Tommy Emanuel doesn't play like Eddie Van Halen, and Joe Bonamassa doesn't sound like Steve Vai. These players succeeded not by mastering everything, but by embracing who they are musically. The guitar truly is Pandora's box—endless possibilities that will outlive us all. Don't let that overwhelm you. Finding your center and developing confidence in your unique voice is the real path to becoming the guitarist you want to be. Where are you in these five phases, and what's your next step toward confident playing? In this packed episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we dive deep into a pivotal moment in Van Halen history — the day Eddie Van Halen nearly left the band to join Kiss. Gene Simmons claims it happened on the same day Eddie played him a demo of “Jump,” a song that shocked the Kiss co-founders with its lack of guitar. “So you're going to add guitars?” Gene asked. “No, that's it,” Eddie replied — marking a bold shift in his musical direction in 1983. We trace the history of Gene Simmons' involvement with Van Halen, from the band's early days at Gazzarri's on the Sunset Strip to the now-famous Zero demo he produced. We also discuss the internal friction between Eddie and David Lee Roth that led Eddie to consider jumping ship and joining Kiss — a move Gene ultimately talked him out of. Then, we shift gears to honor the legacy of Rick Derringer, the American rock icon who passed away recently. Known for “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,” Derringer played a surprising role in the Van Halen story. We talk about the early days when Van Halen covered Derringer's songs live, and we revisit the unforgettable moment when Rick Derringer and Eddie Van Halen jammed together at NAMM, a rare and electrifying meeting of guitar heroes. It's an episode full of deep cuts, rock history, and behind-the-scenes stories that link Van Halen, Kiss, and Rick Derringer in unexpected and unforgettable ways. I showed off some of my Van Halen striped guitars talked about each one a little bit. And thank you to Bay Area Rich we unboxed a mystery “canned good item”.
Just two days after their 2025 MMRBQ performance, Mammoth came back to Philadelphia to perform in the very intimate club setting of the Foundry in a Pierre Presents session. Along with playing a set for some very lucky WMMR listeners, Wolfgang Van Halen sat down for a conversation with Pierre Robert in between songs, recorded in front of a live audience full of fans. The pair discussed Mammoth's latest single "The End," including the wicked music video directed by one of Wolf's favorite directors, Robert Rodriguez. They also talked about the legendary 5150 and how Wolf incorporates vintage Van Halen gear into this new music. When Pierre brought up Mammoth's very first single, "Distance," and moving through grief with music, you'll hear the impactful moment that brought the room to a standstill; anyone who's lost a loved one will be able to relate. Wolf is always honest about how the loss of his father, Eddie Van Halen, has affected him, but he's also hopeful and the future is bright for the band. He's preparing for the Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne tribute in Birmingham, touring with Creed this summer, and putting out more new music. OU812 (pronounced "Oh You Ate One Too") is the eighth studio album by American rock band Van Halen, released on May 24, 1988. It is the band's second album to feature vocalist Sammy Hagar, following the success of 5150. I've known Jason Darby for over 45 years, and while we've long shared a deep bond through our love of family, golf & tennis, and music, I was still surprised by the depth of his knowledge when it comes to the guitar—and especially his passion for legendary players like Eddie Van Halen, Nuno Bettencourt, and Keith Richards, to name a few.Our conversation kicks off with a trip down memory lane, back to the late '70s on the Bay Hills Beach tennis courts, where a young Jason was my tennis “pupil.” From there, we fast forward to discussing what makes these guitar icons so extraordinary. Jason shares his insights into their unique styles and explains why he's spent so much time studying their technique and artistry in his personal pursuit of mastering the axe. We also take time to talk about the greatest joys in his life: his wife of 25 years, Trish, and their three incredible kids — Kaleigh, Peyton, and Patrick. The Darby family's list of achievements is too long to cover in one episode, but I'd be remiss not to mention Trish's legendary run at St. Bonaventure, where she set all-time soccer scoring records and became the first (and only) female soccer player inducted into the university's Hall of Fame. Sorry, Trish—I had to brag a little. :)Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us!

Imagine if Eddie Van Halen and Rahzel had a musical lovechild, and you might get somewhere close to Beatbox Jake's jaw-dropping solo effort, Dichotomy—a relentless, high-octane fusion of shred guitar wizardry and next-level vocal percussion. Clocking in at 53 minutes across 12 tracks, this album is a one-man sonic demolition derby—a bold, genre-defying statement that cements Jake as a musical innovator. It's easy to throw around words like “innovative” and “unique,” but Dichotomy actually earns them. Every single sound on this album—every drum hit, every bass groove, every searing guitar solo—comes from one person. There's no drum machine here; Jake's mouth percussion is so tight, so textured, and so powerful that it rivals a full kit. At the same time, his guitar playing is absolutely unhinged—a thrilling mix of technical shredding, bluesy grit, and metal ferocity. It's the kind of playing that makes musicians stop mid-conversation and ask, Who is this guy?

Rock veterans make strong showings with Smashing Pumpkins returning to their hard-edged roots on "Beguiled" and Red Hot Chili Peppers honoring guitar legend Eddie Van Halen with their extended six-minute tribute "Eddie."Our exploration reveals fascinating discoveries – from The 1975's "I'm In Love With You" (prompting us to admit we've overlooked their 20-year catalog) to emerging artist Jake Swamp and the Pine's nostalgic "Empty Stomachs and Bloodshot Eyes." Sammy Hagar Opens Up on 21-Year Rift with Alex Van Halen: "I'm Still Out Here Doing It—and That Bothers Him" In a candid new interview with Rolling Stone, Sammy Hagar has broken his silence on the long-standing rift between him and Alex Van Halen—revealing they haven't spoken in over two decades. Alex, who notably refused to mention Sammy by name in his recent memoir Brothers, has apparently shut the door on any form of communication, and Hagar is finally offering his side of the story. “I've asked people like Irving Azoff, ‘What's the problem?'” Hagar says. “Some say it's about Cabo Wabo—that the band gave it to me when it was losing money, and after I turned it into a massive success, Alex got mad. But they gave it to me! I signed off on everything and took the risk. Now they're angry I made it work?” But the Cabo story is only part of the tension. Hagar also points to his brutally honest 2011 memoir Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, where he chronicled Eddie Van Halen's struggles during their final tour together. While Sammy says he's not looking to drag Eddie's name through the mud again, the damage may have already been done. Still, Hagar believes something deeper is fueling Alex's resentment. “I think Al's mad because I'm still out there doing it—with Mike [Anthony]—and he can't. He's not a frontman, not a songwriter. And I don't think he wants to—or can—play drums anymore. I'd feel terrible if I couldn't do it either. But I'm happy, man. And being happy really pisses people off.” Hagar adds with a smirk, “Al, I'm making you money out here—selling Van Halen records, keeping the legacy alive. Just leave me alone, and I'll do the same.” Alex, for his part, has offered a different vision of Van Halen's legacy. In interviews promoting Brothers, he explained why the book ends in 1984, skipping over the entire "Van Hagar" era and beyond. “The original band—that was the magic,” Alex told Rolling Stone and USA Today. “After that, it wasn't the same. We did good work, but the spirit, the fabric, the bond—it changed.” Asked about the Best Of All Worlds tour featuring Hagar, Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham, Alex didn't mince words: “I'm not interested. They're not doing the band justice. That's not my business.” In fact, Alex never once mentioned Hagar by name during the Rolling Stone interview. Instead, he referred to post-1984 Van Halen simply as: “We had a lot of other singers over the years.” Despite the cold shoulder, Hagar insists he and Eddie reconciled before the guitarist's death in 2020. “I'm at peace with Eddie,” Sammy says. “That was important to me.” Hagar fronted Van Halen from 1985 to 1996, delivering four No. 1 albums—5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance—before the band's brief 2004 reunion. That tour ended on a sour note, with Anthony forced to take a pay cut and sign away rights to the band name and logo just to participate. As for Alex? Hagar isn't holding his breath for a reunion call. “Al's changed. And that's fine,” he says. “I'm just out here keeping the music alive.” "Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen.
