On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into an article where Steve Vai recalls the moment he knew he was destined to join David Lee Roth's band after Roth's split from Van Halen in 1985. Vai shares how, the second he heard Roth was searching for a guitarist, he told his roommate, “That's my gig.” The very next day, Roth himself called. We also talk about Roth's ambitions to “beat Van Halen,” the challenges of filling Eddie Van Halen's shoes, and why Vai believed he was perfect for the role. Tune in for this deep look into one of rock's most iconic stories—Steve Vai's early days with Diamond Dave and the legacy of Van Halen.

In a recent interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine, Paul Reed Smith opened up about his unexpected connection to Eddie Van Halen. “I made the 5150 pickup. I made the 5150 guitar. I'm the one who bolted it together and got it working at Kramer,” Smith revealed, recalling his hands-on role in shaping one of rock's most iconic guitars. Although a signature PRS model for Eddie never materialized, Smith did craft a custom guitar for him years later. The collaboration nearly happened—an “almost” that has since become part of guitar legend. “I did make one for him… He was a sweetheart. He was so nice to me,” Smith said. “It just wasn't meant to be.” We dive into a recent Guitar Interactive Magazine interview where Paul Reed Smith claims he built the Kramer 5150 pickup and the guitar itself!

In this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we dive into a fascinating story from recording engineer Ross Hogarth, who shares what it was like working with Eddie Van Halen during the making of A Different Kind of Truth. Hogarth, known for his work with artists like Mötley Crüe, Miley Cyrus, and Devildriver, gives an inside look at Eddie's unique recording process at the legendary 5150 Studios. From Eddie's unconventional approach to double-tracking guitars to experimenting with vintage gear and blending amps for a fuller sound — this episode is packed with insight. Greg Koch sits down with guitar virtuoso Dweezil Zappa for a fascinating deep dive into musical authenticity, technical mastery, and the challenge of preserving a legendary legacy. Their conversation reveals the extraordinary dedication required to perform Frank Zappa's intricate compositions, with Dweezil candidly sharing his 14-year journey to truly internalize his father's musical vocabulary. What begins as a discussion about guitar techniques evolves into profound insights about musical connection. Dweezil explains why, despite growing up as Frank Zappa's son, he initially gravitated toward more guitar-centric players, such as Eddie Van Halen, before tackling his father's complex work. He compares performing Frank's arrangements to an "orchestral mindset" where precision and teamwork are paramount, revealing that despite years of touring, he must essentially relearn most pieces before each performance. The conversation takes unexpected turns through musical philosophy, modern guitar culture, and the realities of today's music industry. Dweezil offers a valuable perspective for independent musicians, suggesting that cultivating meaningful relationships with a dedicated fanbase is far more sustainable than chasing mainstream success: "Instead of trying to get a dollar from a million people, what if you cultivated a relationship with 10,000 people who want to spend a hundred dollars every year?" Throughout their exchange, both guitarists reflect on finding balance between technical skill and emotional connection, agreeing that the ability to move an audience often transcends pure virtuosity.

On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we share Jas Obrecht's world debut of one of Edward Van Halen's happiest, most memorable interviews. On that special morning — May 20, 1991 — Edward was on top of the world. He was celebrating the birth of his son, Wolfgang… his relationship with Valerie was strong… and he had just finished mixing For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Van Halen's first album in three years. The interview took place in the control room of Edward's expansive 5150 home studio. The console was a perfect snapshot of his world — cigarettes, tools, bottlecaps, a bowl of guitar slides, and Motley Crüe and Led Zeppelin CDs scattered around. “Before we do the interview,” Edward said, “I want you to hear the new album.” He cued up an advance CD of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, showed Jas the volume slider, and with a grin, said, “Hope ya like it,” before walking out the door. When the album finished, Edward returned, flipped a switch, and lit up two massive rooms behind the control room window — one filled with his guitars and amps, the other with Alex's drum setup. Right then, Jas and Edward launched into the wide-ranging interview you're about to hear. https://youtu.be/pG7e5crFnpE?si=R8MfBwPC_X8JNMQL Listening back after 34 years, Jas was struck by how joyful, relaxed, and full of life Edward sounded. This is the Edward Jas will always remember — and now you'll get to hear him that way too. The black-and-white photo of Edward is by Jon Sievert. Portions of this interview appeared in Guitar Player magazine's August 1991 issue. If you're into hard rock and heavy metal guitar, check out Jas's Talking Guitar interviews with Edward — plus conversations with legends like Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker, Joe Satriani, Vivian Campbell, and Ratt's Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby. By the mid-90s, Van Ha,len was in crisis mode; while seemingly still a successful band, ruptures between guitarist Eddie Van Halen and vocalist Sammy Hagar forced Hagar's departure from the band in 1996. What followed were 24 years filled with chaos, egos, drugs, booze, and periods where Van Halen lay fallow for years at a time.Alex Alt (Slydog Music Cast) and me will explore the period 1996-2020, during which time Van Halen went through four singers (one of which you may never have heard of), yet only produced two studio albums, one of which remains a controversial and divisive one among fans to this day.We explore the good, the bad, the ugly and the...whatever, as Van Halen went from being a legendary band, to being rock's greatest soap opera; hence the reason why this episode is entitled "As Van Halen Turns." Check it out!

Tonight on Exclusively Van Halen, we're back with Part 2 of our special 3-part series featuring two very special guests: Michael “Myko” Gutierrez and Robert Stoltz. They're here to dive deep into the story of one of the rarest Van Halen guitars ever — a nearly unknown Kramer Baretta that was built and custom-painted in 1984 at 5150 by Eddie Van Halen himself and his then-guitar tech Rudy Leiren. This wasn't just any Kramer — it was Ed's personal studio-use-only guitar, played exclusively at 5150 and never meant for public hands. Incredibly, this guitar found its way into the wild when Michael won it in a once-in-a-lifetime contest sponsored by Kramer Guitars and Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. Even more amazing: Eddie personally handed Michael the guitar at the 1985 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. Robert, who has contributed to multiple Van Halen-related publications, first wrote about this guitar back in 1997 for The Inside magazine. He's recently completed a detailed follow-up article, packed with new insights into the guitar's history, which will be published online soon. Don't miss this deep cut into Van Halen lore — only on Exclusively Van Halen.
Today we're diving into the brand-new Harley Benton ST-80 series – Superstrats with serious '80s shredder vibes!
What happens when one guitar god pays tribute to another… and it backfires? In this episode, we dive deep into the surprising fallout between Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton — two of rock's most legendary players. It all started with a jam session in 1983, featured on Brian May's Star Fleet Project, where Eddie and Brian recorded a slow blues track called “Blues Breaker” — dedicated to Clapton himself. But Clapton hated it. He called it “horrible.” He said Eddie and Brian “can't play” the blues. And he delivered a scathing verdict: “If he was that tuned into me and missed that point… then he missed the whole point.” This video explores the tension between technical brilliance and emotional expression, the strict “rules” of blues as Clapton saw them, and how a friendship built on admiration ended with hurt feelings, harsh words, and never speaking again. We also revisit Dave Davies of The Kinks and his own complicated feelings about being imitated — including a jab at Eddie Van Halen's version of “You Really Got Me.” From tribute to tension, from respect to rivalry — this is the untold story behind one of rock's coldest guitar feuds.

Nothing can beat a charismatic frontman. Then again, there are some Side Players that give them a run for their money. I mean… who is Bono without Edge? Freddie Mercury without Brian May? Roth or Haggar without Eddie Van Halen? Robert Plant without Jimmy Page? Anthony Kiedis without John Frusciante? Bon Scott or Brian Johnson without Angus & Malcolm? Or Mick Jagger without Keith Richards.Of course I would be remiss not to mention the few charismatic Frontmen that are also ripping guitarists. Like Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, Either of the Vaughn Brothers, Derek Trucks, Prince, Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins, Mark Knopfler, Vince Gill… and lets just say ALL of the Kings. But which is it better to be, a Frontman or a Side Player? Can you be both? Which carries more stress? Which carries more fame? Does one roll have more significance than the other? Who has the bigger influence on the sound? If we could give some advice, what would it be? When I think of a band, which member comes to mind? And… job security… did I just get fired?Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Lloyd, on the Tweed Couch.
Michael Anthony Opens Up About His One Big Regret: Van Halen Deserved a Thunderous Farewell, Not a Whimper For Michael Anthony, former Van Halen bassist, the ride with one of rock's most electrifying bands was nothing short of a dream — until the ending, which still haunts him. In a recent episode of Get on the Bus, Anthony revealed his biggest career regret: how Van Halen's legendary run came to an unceremonious close. “It should have gone out with a fricking bang that shook the world,” he said, “and it was more like a whimper, the way everything ended.” Though he described the band's heyday as “living the dream” and even “a fairy tale,” the behind-the-scenes reality was far from perfect. As years went by, tensions and personal rifts—particularly with guitarist Eddie Van Halen—created a lasting fracture. “Unfortunately, Eddie and I never made amends,” Anthony shared. “We had some issues, and I'm sure that if he had not passed when he did, we would've reconciled… we would've calmed all that stuff down.” In a bittersweet twist, Anthony revealed that there had been talks of a massive reunion tour featuring the original members — a true full-circle moment in the making. “I talked to Wolfgang [Van Halen], and he said there were plans to bring everyone back together,” Anthony recalled. “At that point in Ed's life, he was more like, ‘Hey, the past is the past... water under the bridge.'” But time ran out. Send Steve a Text MessageWhat really holds most guitar players back? After teaching thousands of guitarists, I've discovered it's rarely about technical ability—it's about confidence. That feeling of certainty when you play, knowing who you are as a musician, and being comfortable in your own skin. The journey to guitar confidence follows five distinct phases, each building upon the last. It begins with curiosity—that moment when you hear Hendrix, Van Halen, or whoever your inspiration might be, and think "I want to do that!" This natural motivation fuels your early development. Next comes foundation building, where you develop the essential skills needed for your musical goals. This is where many players get distracted by "bright shiny objects" instead of focusing on the fundamentals that will truly advance their playing. The third phase—developing actual confidence—is where most guitarists get stuck. It requires something scary: being vulnerable enough to play for others and receive feedback. "I'll play with people once I'm better" becomes a perpetual excuse, creating a cycle where improvement stalls because you're not getting the feedback needed to grow. Breaking through this barrier transforms your playing.Once confidence develops, you enter the creative expression phase, where your playing begins to sound more human and personal. This naturally evolves into the final phase—musical identity. The liberating truth is that even guitar legends have limitations. Tommy Emanuel doesn't play like Eddie Van Halen, and Joe Bonamassa doesn't sound like Steve Vai. These players succeeded not by mastering everything, but by embracing who they are musically. The guitar truly is Pandora's box—endless possibilities that will outlive us all. Don't let that overwhelm you. Finding your center and developing confidence in your unique voice is the real path to becoming the guitarist you want to be. Where are you in these five phases, and what's your next step toward confident playing?
