Sammy Hagar has made a bold claim: Eddie Van Halen didn't just change guitar playing—he saved guitar players. On a recent interview, Hagar praised Eddie as a "music god," comparing his genius to Beethoven and crediting him with revolutionizing not only guitar, but modern rock music itself. According to Sammy, without Eddie's innovations—tapping, whammy bar techniques, groundbreaking songwriting, and keyboard work—guitarists may have been left behind in a world dominated by electronic music and technology. Hagar also reflects on how working with Eddie Van Halen made him a better singer, songwriter, and musician. From classics like Love Walks In and Black and Blue to later-era masterpieces from Balance, Sammy argues that some of Eddie's most advanced and underrated work came during the Van Halen years they shared together. Did Eddie Van Halen save guitar players? Was his later work even more impressive than the early classics? What's the biggest guitar story of the week? On this episode of Talking Guitars, we're covering three major stories making headlines in the guitar world:
One man spent 50 years at the same radio station. The rest of us can barely commit to a streaming service. This episode of The Rizzuto Show welcomes St. Louis radio icon John Ulett into the studio for a hilarious, nostalgic, and surprisingly emotional conversation about surviving five decades in broadcasting without being fired, arrested, or permanently trapped in a dark cork-covered radio studio.John shares stories from the wild early days of KSHE, when listeners could literally walk up to the station window, steal albums, yell requests, and occasionally terrify overnight DJs. We hear about legendary encounters with future superstars like John Mellencamp, Billy Joel, Brian Adams, Eddie Van Halen, and David Lee Roth before they became household names. Apparently every rock legend passed through St. Louis at some point—and somehow John lived to tell the stories. The gang digs into radio's golden years, discussing everything from bizarre consultant advice to the strange reality of hearing your younger self on old airchecks and realizing you sounded way more serious than you remembered. John opens up about imposter syndrome, career longevity, and what it feels like knowing generations of listeners grew up listening to him. It turns out even a broadcasting legend still worries someone will eventually figure out he has no idea what he's doing. Good news, John: you're among friends.Things get weird when stories surface about obsessive listeners, accidental hot-mic moments, profanity accidentally testing radio delay systems, and one particularly unsettling fan who learned to sound exactly like John and may or may not have wanted to wear his skin as a jacket. Just normal radio stuff. The conversation also dives into John's decades-long role as the Cardinals' PA announcer, including mispronounced player names, emotional rookie debuts, opening day memories, Jack Buck stories, and the pressure of announcing baseball legends in front of thousands of fans. Because apparently public speaking isn't stressful enough unless you're doing it over giant stadium speakers. Then, because The Rizzuto Show cannot leave well enough alone, the entire interview derails into a game called "Sick in the Head," where John and Lern battle to determine who knows more about horrifying medical conditions. Expect discussions of gout, hemorrhoids, shingles, migraines, tetanus, gallstones, sleep apnea, vitamin deficiencies, and enough symptoms to convince every listener they should immediately schedule a doctor's appointment. It's a celebration of radio history, St. Louis memories, friendship, mortality, questionable health choices, and the strange beauty of spending a lifetime entertaining people. If you love classic radio stories, behind-the-scenes broadcasting chaos, Cardinals memories, weird listener encounters, and watching two hypochondriacs become amateur doctors, this episode delivers all of it.This daily comedy show proves that the best stories come from the people who've been around long enough to collect them.Whether you're a longtime listener or discovering The Rizzuto Show for the first time, this daily comedy show is packed with laughs, nostalgia, and enough medical misinformation-adjacent panic to keep you entertained all day.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into some major praise for Van Halen from one of the world's biggest podcasts! During a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan and investor, mathematician, and physicist Eric Weinstein discussed the impact of Van Halen and the legacy of Eddie Van Halen. Rogan called Van Halen with David Lee Roth "literally a perfect band," saying they were one of the greatest rock bands of all time and a defining part of his high school years. Rogan also argued that Eddie Van Halen never received the mainstream credit he deserved for completely changing the guitar world. The conversation touched on the band's evolution into the Sammy Hagar era, with Rogan noting that while the band became even more popular, it was a different sound from the original Van Halen that revolutionized rock music. Did Eddie Van Halen get the recognition he deserved? Was the original Van Halen the perfect rock band? Join us as we break down Rogan and Eric Weinstein's comments and discuss the lasting impact of the world's most influential guitarist! #VanHalen #EddieVanHalen #JoeRogan #ExclusivelyVanHalen #EricWeinstein
We started First Concert Memories, the monthly series from The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, we wanted to capture the passion of rock fans who were turned on (usually at a young age) by the power of a great live rock show. That passion comes from childhood and teenage fandom of bands that hit you in just the right spot in your heart, mind and time of your life. For our generation, that was Van Halen. The genius of Eddie Van Halen's guitar against the raw vocals of David Lee Roth catapulted the boys into superstardom as they were loved by hard rockers, guitar heads, MTV, adoring females, and record company execs. That's why we can do our 3rd FCM on Van Halen because they were that big and they changed their sets so much over the years (not to mention lineups) that there are lots of entry points depending on your age. Tim Durling of Tim's Vinyl Confessions is just a bit younger than Action Jackson and The Wolf so while our heroes first show was the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Tour, Tim first so the fellas on the Balance Tour in 1995. Van Halen were Tim's favorite band but because the band never toured Atlantic Canada where he grew up, there were few opportunities to catch them live. Once he was old enough to drive across the border with his buddies, he finally caught Eddie, Alex, Mike & Sammy in Maine in August of 1995. Tim knows Van Halen and at the time they were still his favorite band. He's even written a book on Sammy Hagar , Red on Black, so seeing his heroes was a dream come true. There were some disappointments with the opening band and the setlist was very heavy on Sammy era. But we never forget our first Van Halen concert and Tim is a rock n roll veteran who knows the real deal when he sees it. On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we discuss a controversial new interview in which members of The Jesus and Mary Chain claim that shoegaze doesn't actually exist and go even further by saying that Eddie Van Halen "ruined rock guitar." The Scottish alternative rock legends shared their thoughts ahead of the Total Bummer festival in New York, where Jim and William Reid discussed the origins of the shoegaze label, guitar playing, musical influences, and why they never connected with Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking style. William Reid didn't hold back, criticizing the flood of guitarists who copied Van Halen's technique throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His comments have sparked debate among rock fans and guitar players worldwide. Were the Reid brothers right, or does Eddie Van Halen remain the most influential rock guitarist of all time? Join the conversation as we break down the interview, the reaction from fans, and the lasting impact of Eddie Van Halen on rock guitar history. #EddieVanHalen #VanHalen #RockGuitar #JohnnyBeaneTV
On this morning's episode of the Metal Breakdown Daily, we are tracking some of the biggest, most emotionally charged developments hitting the rock and heavy metal circuits. First up, Atlanta progressive sludge metal titans Mastodon have officially broken their silence. We break down their newly released standalone tribute single, "Your Ghost Again"—the band's absolute first piece of new music since the departure and subsequent tragic motorcycle death of founding guitarist Brent Hinds. Drummer Brann Dailor and bassist Troy Sanders open up about the intense gauntlet of grief, tracking music in the studio while seeing Hinds out of the corner of their eyes, and what this means for their completed 9th studio album. Next, we move to a massive update out of the Van Halen camp. Toto legend Steve Lukather has gone on the record with Guitar Player magazine to shut down internet skeptics, promising that the upcoming, unreleased Eddie Van Halen vault tracks are "not throwaway s*." We take you inside the studio layout featuring Eddie, Alex, and Wolfgang Van Halen, and discuss the band's current high-stakes search for an iconic rock vocalist to front Eddie's final musical statement. Finally, we look at Metallica, who continue to operate at an unprecedented level of global dominance. The thrash icons have officially shattered the all-time attendance record for Germany's biggest-ever stadium concert, drawing a mind-blowing 94,000 fans to Berlin's Olympiastadion on the M72 World Tour. We break down the unique stage architecture making these massive crowds possible, the financial stats behind their $600M tour stretch, and their massive charitable milestone through the All Within My Hands foundation.
Summer's coming in hot, and so are we. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're checking out one of the coolest, most American sounds in rock history: surf music. It's a sound designed to imitate the ocean — dripping wet reverb, a clean glowing tone, and that lightning-fast, machine-gun guitar picking you instantly recognize. It exploded right in the gap between the first wave of rock ‘n' rollers and the British Invasion, when the music charts had gone soft. But while surf rock as short lived, it wasn't just a blip. This scene drove major advances in guitar amps, influenced guitar gods from Jimi Hendrix to Eddie Van Halen, and even helped blaze a path toward speed metal. And of course, it gave the world The Beach Boys. This was counterculture. This was pure American teenage freedom in musical form — cars, girls, waves, and rebellion. In this episode, we're riding the wave: and talking about artists like Dick Dale, The Surfaris, and the Ventures. We'll also touch on how the Pulp Fiction soundtrack helped surf rock get back up on the board as well as some modern bands that are still hanging 10 with the sound. EPISODE #125 - One of the most important people in making Van Halen a successful band was engineer/producer Donn Landee. He served as an engineer on the first six VH albums with David Lee Roth and as an engineer/producer on “5150” and “OU812” during the Sammy Hagar years. Landee was also responsible for building Eddie Van Halen's home studio, 5150. The impact he had on Van Halen was immeasurable. Additionally, he worked alongside producer Ted Templeman on other famous acts like the Doobie Brothers, Little Feat, Nicolette Larson and many others. In tribute, the Daves do a deep dive interview with author Greg Renoff who had conducted several interviews with Landee for his books ("Van Halen Rising" and "Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music") and an extensive story for Tape Op magazine. On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into one of the biggest Van Halen stories in years!
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we're celebrating one of the most legendary moments in rock history — Van Halen's massive headlining performance at the US Festival on May 29, 1983! Over 300,000 fans packed the grounds in San Bernardino, California, for Heavy Metal Day, witnessing a historic lineup that included Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Scorpions, and more. But when Van Halen hit the stage after sundown, they proved exactly why they were the biggest rock band in the world. ⚡ Featuring David Lee Roth at his wildest, Eddie Van Halen at his most explosive, and a performance that has become the stuff of rock legend!
Some of the greatest guitar players in rock history didn't actually start out on guitar. This fascinating article from Grunge looks at legendary musicians who became world-famous for their guitar playing — but originally trained on completely different instruments. The feature dives into the early musical beginnings of artists like Carlos Santana, Prince, Eddie Van Halen, Nils Lofgren, and Mick Mars. From classical piano lessons to violin training and even accordion studies, these musicians developed musical foundations that later helped shape their groundbreaking guitar styles. One of the most interesting stories is Eddie Van Halen, who studied classical piano as a child and even won piano competitions before ever becoming one of the most influential guitarists of all time. The article also highlights how Prince first connected deeply with the piano, while Carlos Santana struggled through violin lessons before discovering the instrument that would define his career. It's a reminder that musical talent often starts somewhere unexpected — and sometimes the path to becoming a guitar legend begins behind a piano, with a violin, or even an accordion. If you love guitars, gear, classic rock, and music news — you're in the right place. Hit that LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and hang with the Johnny Beane TV crew!

The weather people said “possible severe storms,” but the gang heard “excellent opportunity for emotional overreaction and questionable survival strategies.” So naturally this episode spirals immediately into hail panic, DIY windshield protection, moving blankets, yoga mats, garage envy, and Moon confidently explaining fake science about why breath mints secretly betray humanity.Rizz kicks things off by warning the entire St. Louis area about incoming storms that may or may not destroy every car parked outside. Which immediately leads to a debate about how far someone should realistically go to protect their vehicle from hail. Public parking garages? Acceptable. Moving blankets? Smart. Covering your Jeep with yoga mats and positive thinking? Apparently also acceptable. Meanwhile, Lern suggests simply sacrificing one vehicle entirely because “that sounds like a new car problem,” which honestly might be the most financially irresponsible thing said all morning — and that's really saying something for this crew. The conversation somehow gets even more chaotic once Point Fest enters the discussion. The gang relives the stress of setting up a massive outdoor festival while storms rolled through, stages leaked, bands questioned whether electrocution was part of the performance package, and Tommy the boss basically responded with, “Then don't play.” Very comforting leadership. Truly inspiring stuff. There's also a backstage breakdown of the annual Point Fest meet-and-greet chaos where listeners, roadies, bands, security guards, and random sleeveless radio hosts all blended together into one giant rain-soaked rock festival fever dream. Rizz and Moon proudly explain why they went sleeveless all day like two divorced dads trying to win a jet ski raffle, while Lern somehow manages to roast everybody involved without breaking a sweat.Things escalate even further when the crew discusses Wolfgang Van Halen showing up to an interview with full “please don't talk to me” body language. Hood up. Arms crossed. Total lockdown mode. Which, naturally, Rizz interpreted as a personal challenge. Against all odds, he actually got Wolfgang laughing by the end of the interview and managed to avoid bringing up Eddie Van Halen entirely — a broadcasting miracle roughly equivalent to landing a plane during a tornado.Meanwhile, Moon casually drops one of the most convincing fake facts in show history by claiming mints actually make your breath worse because they “kill the good bacteria.” Nobody questions it. Everybody believes it. Even Moon admits he has absolutely no idea whether it's true. This is how misinformation spreads, folks. Not through the internet. Through dudes standing backstage at Point Fest with pockets full of Icebreakers. The episode also features debates about mysterious concert announcements, suspicious plus-sign logos, listener encounters, artist interviews, backstage weirdness, and the eternal realization that every adult eventually reaches a point where they need to sit in silence in their car while listening to emotionally supportive music. If you're looking for a daily comedy show packed with weird news, hilarious fails, celebrity interviews, St. Louis chaos, festival stories, sarcastic humor, and the exact kind of conversations that make you laugh while questioning society at the same time, this episode absolutely delivers. This daily comedy show also proves once again that no matter how bad the weather gets, the crew will still somehow spend most of the episode arguing about mints, sleeves, and concert clues instead of preparing responsibly. And honestly? That's probably why this daily comedy show keeps surviving.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO. From diva-defining ballads to California soft-rock confessions, the guys trace how these albums relaunch careers, reset expectations, and prove that sometimes the simplest album title hides the messiest feelings. The AlbumsMariah Carey – Mariah Carey (1990)A tightly controlled debut that introduces a once-in-a-generation voice through lush ballads and new jack swing bounce, balancing radio-ready polish with glimpses of the struggling songwriter behind the spotlight.Fleetwood Mac – Fleetwood Mac (1975)A reborn band finds its classic lineup and sound, blending Lindsey Buckingham's urgency, Christine McVie's melodic warmth, and Stevie Nicks' mystical storytelling into a surprisingly cohesive California rock pivot from their blues roots.Diggin' AlbumsKacey Musgraves – Middle of Nowhere (2026)Reflective, rootsy country with spacey edges, full of quiet, late-night songs about isolation and finding yourself again out past the glow of the city.Van Halen – Van Halen (1978)A swaggering, high-voltage hard rock debut that turns Eddie Van Halen's guitar pyrotechnics and David Lee Roth's big personality into one nonstop, party-starting calling card.American Football – American Football (LP4) (2026)Veteran emo craftsmen stretch out with piano, vibraphone, and brass around their signature clean guitars, turning midlife anxiety and emotional scar tissue into slow-burning, late-evening mood pieces. The Haunted Youth – Boys Cry Too (2026)Dreamy indie rock that cranks the guitars and leans into vulnerability, using bittersweet hooks to argue that sadness and softness belong in the story for boys and men, too.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing with another music obsessive who still loves hearing whole albums front to back.“What's in a name? Join Ray and Marc as Tunesmate takes a ride back to 1986 to celebrate the release of 5150 by Van Halen. The album was a turning point for the band after David Lee Roth left and Sammy Hagar took over lead vocals. Do you remember where you were when you first heard it? The album features tracks like Why Can't This Be Love, Dreams, Best of Both Worlds, and Love Walks In. Sammy brought a new energy, and fans still debate to this day who is the best lead singer. Eddie Van Halen continued to explore keyboards after his success on 1984 and still delivered iconic guitar riffs. Alex Van Halen and Mike Anthony provided a steady rhythm section that supported this new Van Halen sound, commonly called Van Hagar. Wherever you land, it's hard to deny that this album left a lasting mark on rock history.
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into a fascinating story from Guitar Player featuring legendary Ritchie Blackmore and his candid thoughts on Eddie Van Halen. Blackmore reflects on his backstage encounters with Eddie, describing him as incredibly gifted—but also surprisingly humble. He recalls Eddie downplaying himself, even saying, “You don't want to talk to me, because I'm nobody,” something Blackmore admits he never understood. Despite revolutionizing guitar with his groundbreaking techniques, Eddie often underestimated his own impact. Blackmore also touches on Eddie's personality, suggesting that he sometimes relied on drinking to feel comfortable in social situations. Still, what stood out most was Eddie's authenticity—his intuitive, feel-based playing that set him apart from even the most technically perfect players. Comparing him to greats like Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, and Eric Clapton, Blackmore emphasizes that true musical expression isn't about always playing the “right” notes—it's about searching, feeling, and pushing boundaries. And in his eyes, Eddie embodied that spirit completely. He also reveals a more personal side—how Eddie, deeply inspired by Clapton, was hurt by rejection from one of his heroes. It's a reminder that even the greatest musicians carry insecurities behind the scenes. #VanHalen #EddieVanHalen #RitchieBlackmore #GuitarLegends
Released April 29, 1981, Van Halen's Fair Warning wasn't their biggest commercial album—but it became one of their most respected, influential, and cult-favorite records in rock history. Dark, gritty, and aggressive, this fourth studio album captured Van Halen at their rawest and most intense, with Eddie Van Halen pushing guitar innovation even further.
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we dive into an incredible, nerve-wracking, and unforgettable moment in guitar history. Nuno Bettencourt shares the story of the day he finally came face-to-face with Eddie Van Halen in 1991—and everything changed. What do you even play when you're handed Eddie's guitar? According to Nuno… pure panic. Fresh off recording Pornograffitti, Nuno found himself at CenterStaging in Los Angeles when Eddie suddenly stopped rehearsal, walked straight up to him, and made it clear—he knew exactly who Nuno was… and had even read his interviews. Then came the moment: Eddie handed him his own rig. Nuno had spent years chasing that legendary tone, even using Van Halen I and II as his sonic blueprint. Now he was standing right there, hearing it live, feeling it, living it. The dream every guitarist has… suddenly real. And just when you think the story couldn't get more surreal—Eddie greets him in a way only Eddie could. This is one of those stories that reminds you just how powerful those moments can be when heroes become real—and the legend proves even bigger in person. #VanHalen #EddieVanHalen #NunoBettencourt #GuitarLegends

On the 75th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom & Zeus welcome back special guest, Podcaster, Comic, Musician and Shout It Out Loudcast Hall Of Famer, Izzy Presley to review the 1986 hard rock landscape changing album "5150" from Van Halen. Van Halen was coming off their diamond selling album, 1984, when the band and legendary frontman David Lee Roth split. Van Halen was known of course for their Guitar God founder Eddie Van Halen. His brother, drummer Alex Van Halen and his legendary snare was still there as was underrated bassist Michael Anthony and his incredible backing vocals. So the band recruited the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar to replace Diamond Dave. Sammy was already a well established rock star who can sing, write songs and even play guitar. 5150 was Van Halen's seventh album and made it to #1 on Billboard album charts and eventually went 6X platinum. This was Van Halen's first number one album. This album was different than the previous DLR albums with a more polished and pop oriented sound that translated into more accessible music. This is the beginning of the so-called Van Hagar era. This was the Patreon pick and as usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. So tune in to find out if "Do you like Van Halen?" When the guys thought about what to do for their 450th episode, a lot of things came to mind. Around the same time, they were interviewing Steve Rosen, who wrote the book Tonechaser, about his friendship with Eddie Van Halen. The phrase, '5150 for episode 450" just came out in a meeting, and so, here we are! The album was an important one for rockers in the 1980s! One of the truly great Rock bands had just broken ties with its front man, and creative partner... The VH faithful were devastated... The recent event of April Fool's Day reminded the Imbalanced Boys that DLR's departure notice was given on April 1st... No foolin'! Markus and Ray discuss the album, the impact in their worlds, and everyone's, and use some of Rosen's story to fill out the story!
