Episode 64: Nathan East. One of the most recorded musicians of all time, and truly one of the greatest humans—that's Nathan East. I had the best time hanging out with him, diving into his perspective and stories, and cracking up along the way. We talk about his 40-year relationship with Eric Clapton, recording some of the biggest songs ever, and co-writing one of my personal favorite records. His outlook on life is incredible, and I believe that's a huge part of why he's had nonstop opportunities since his teenage musician years. Nathan has played on over 2,000 recordings with legends like Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, Kenny Loggins, Daft Punk, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock…the list goes on and on. As a bassist, he's been half of the groove behind a laundry list of the greatest drummers of all time: Vinnie Colaiuta, Ringo, Ndugu Chancler, Jeff Porcaro, Phil Collins, Harvey Mason, John JR Robinson, and more. I hope you enjoy this conversation with the one-and-only Nathan East! I tried my best to make it special from every other interview he's done. In 2021, I started this podcast with a clear goal: to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the lives and careers of Broadway drummers. Since then, we've hosted some truly remarkable guests who've shared their unique stories, experiences, and insights. As our audience has grown, we've realized that many of you might have missed out on some of our most inspiring interviews. So, over the next year, we're bringing back some of those classic, condensed episodes. Whether it's your first time hearing them or you're revisiting them, I hope they spark the same sense of inspiration. But don't worry, that's not all—we've got some fresh, exciting episodes in the works and a few surprises along the way. Stay tuned because there's plenty more coming your way! Thanks for reading Broadway Drumming 101! This post is public so feel free to share it.In this podcast, we hear about the career of legendary drummer Matt Vander Ende, who shares his fascinating journey from the West Coast music scene to the bright lights of Broadway. Known for his dynamic playing style, Matt takes us through his transition from rock and metal drumming into musical theater, where he ultimately landed one of Broadway's most demanding drumming roles in Wicked.Throughout the interview, Matt reveals:* His musical upbringing was in Oakland, California, and he had early classical training at the San Francisco Conservatory. he has a diverse performance background spanning from school jazz bands to heavy metal tours with his band, Defiance.* How he developed his versatile style, drawing influence from drumming legends like Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Metallica's Lars Ulrich, blending classical chops with rock intensity.* His unexpected path into musical theater, starting with a recommendation to try drumming in local theater productions—a choice that paved the way to his long-running career on Broadway.Matt's detailed look at his role as the drummer for Wicked is a highlight of the conversation. He describes the intense demands of this iconic show, which requires the drummer to seamlessly switch between musical genres, from reggae and punk-inspired beats to classical and traditional Broadway rhythms—all while leading a large 23-piece orchestra.Matt shares:* What makes Wicked such a challenging and unique show to play, including the precise, genre-hopping drumming style it requires to drive the music and choreography.* His experience mastering complex segments like the intense “No Good Deed,” which he describes as “Bartok meets Metallica”—an exhilarating, intricate piece that demands both technical precision and a heavy rock feel.* The importance of consistency in Wicked, with Matt highlighting his methods for keeping each performance fresh, despite the rigorous routine, and the ways he managed physical strain and injury during his tenure.Matt also gives valuable advice to aspiring Broadway drummers on the importance of discipline, professionalism, and learning a wide variety of musical styles. He emphasizes the necessity of playing each performance exactly as the regular drummer does, especially for subs, and offers insights on building relationships and working as part of a close-knit Broadway team. For Broadway fans, drummers, and musicians alike, this episode is packed with stories, lessons, and insights from Matt's extraordinary journey. Don't miss his reflections on the highs and challenges of playing one of Broadway's most iconic shows!Tune in for an unforgettable conversation with Matt Vander Ende on Broadway Drumming 101.Clayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and Off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical. Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra. In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean. Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat. Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year. Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art. HAHAHAHA OK, OK...we're just a bunch of professional musicians with pretty diverse backgrounds who decided to take on a pretty big challenge and have some fun in the process. Now, you might ask, “Oh yeah? Professional musicians, eh? What makes you think you can play Frank's music as well as [insert Zappa family/band member here]?” Well, maybe you haven't heard of us individually, but "we're pretty good musicians" and you probably have heard of the folks on our resumes: BB King, Mick Fleetwood, Vinnie Colaiuta, Googoosh, Dweezil Zappa, LA Philharmonic, Arthur Barrow, Munich Philharmonic, Bryan Beller, Popa Chubby, Yo Yo Ma, Limelight: A Tribute To Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Chicago Lyric Opera, Madison Opera, blah blah blah....you get the idea. As for Frank's music, he was constantly changing things, both for his own creative choices and to adapt to the different musicians he had over the years. He also understood that his live performances were entertainment: it's supposed to be a rock show, not a piano recital. With all that in mind, we don't think playing Song X from Album Y note-for-note while staring at our shoes is the proper way to go about this. The result of that approach (combined with a lot of homework) is a show that pays respect to Zappa's legacy, but is also new and different and dangerous and FUN, with lots of eyebrows. Kinda like Frank. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

It's hard to put into words what it means to meet your heroes. To be able hit record 5 minutes later and get to share that conversation with you is one of the prouder moments of my career. With stories about how he started out, practicing in a shed in Steve Smith's backyard, to walking into Electric Ladyland in New York City for a record date where the horn section was Michael and Randy Brecker and Barry Rogers, we cover a lot of ground in this conversation. John Tesh, Tracy Chapman, Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Vince Neal, Billy Cobham, Mike Stern, Vinnie Colaiuta, Frank Gambale, about a thousand other legendary recording artists grace the pages of Tim's career highlights. I hope this is the first of many times I get to pick Tim's brain and share it with you. The man is a treasure chest of knowledge and experience with some of the best music and bass related stories you could hope to hear. Episode # 215 - Trevor Rabin discusses his new solo album "RIO" and more! Trevor Rabin, the South African guitarist, singer, multi-musician, writer and producer, recently announced ‘Rio', his first solo album of vocal material in 34 years, set for release in just a week's time on the 6th October 2023 worldwide. Given that his previous vocal-led solo album, ‘Can't Look Away', was released in 1989 (2012's ‘Jacaranda' was all-instrumental), Rabin has kept us waiting for more than three decades for a follow-up. Trevor admits that there was pressure from all sides, including his own family, to have speeded up the process. However, the delay is excusable. Since leaving Yes following the ‘Talk' album in 1994 and largely as a prequel to touring as part of ARW in 2016, the guitarist entered the time-consuming world of movie soundtracks. Not just any old movies, either. Trevor's name appears as composer for such blockbusters as Con Air, Armageddon, Remember the Titans, Enemy Of The State, Deep Blue Sea, Glory Road, and Gone In 60 Seconds and both National Treasure movies, amongst many others. “Over the past ten years I was having ideas, concepts that I couldn't implement due to my busy schedule,” he explains, adding: “To be honest, those years flew by in a flurry. I knew that this was the time, and once I found my momentum I worked on the album 24/7.” The process proved a labour of love and as with his first and second solo records, ‘Trevor Rabin' and ‘Face To Face' (from 1977 and '79 respectively), Rabin handled just about all of the instruments himself. Stylistically, ‘Rio'– is tough to categorise. Besides guitar-driven rock-meets-pop, ‘Goodbye' is Country & Western with an edgy drive, while ‘Tumbleweed' begins in a burst of harmonies. No wonder its working title was ‘The Demographic Nightmare'. “I wanted to get into many different areas,” Rabin states. “Of course there are ‘prog things', but overall there are a lot of styles going on.” As mentioned, Trevor plays the majority of the instruments on the record. However, on drums for a number of tracks is Lou Molino, while Trevor also contributes some drums and percussion. Vinnie Colaiuta provides drums on ‘Push', and Rabin's son Ryan Rabin helped out with some of the most important percussive arrangements. Along the way Trevor also drafted in a couple of friends, Dante Marchi and Liz Constantine, to sing back up on two songs, as well as Charlie Bisharat on violin.
When this episode was recorded, the writers and actors strikes were both still going strong with no end in sight, so resident keyboardist for the Jimmy Kimmell Show, Jeff Babko, was able to find time in his normally very busy schedule to rap with me. In fact, the Kimmell show is just a piece of his crowded schedule, which includes being the touring pianist on stage with Steve Martin and Martin Short, in addition to composing for movie scores like the new Weird Al biopic, Toy Story 4, Encanto, but also recording with James Taylor, Jason Mraz, Shelby Lynne, Simon Philips, Sheryl Crow-- not counting the folks he's played with on Kimmell. He's a funny man, driven to make music with whomever and in whatever forum is available, but usually includes incredible musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Coffin, Matt Chamberlain, Mark Isham and many more. He's a podcast host for the Caffeinated Keyboardist, owns his own studio Tudor Tones and is generally just busy because what in the hell else is there in this life but to make music. He's got a new record called The Libretto Show with bassist David Piltch and is generally just ready to rip at all times.

Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. His classical roots, his quest and development in the improvisational, jazz and jazz/fusion areas – not to mention his tenure in the pop, rock, funk and blues circuits – are all evident inside Gary's distinct and far-reaching musical personality. His solo album and DVD output has also reinforced his status as a critically acclaimed writer and arranger in the contemporary music world. For close to four decades Gary has worked alongside a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce (Cream), Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy), British pop/funk band Level 42, Billy Cobham, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern (Miles Davis), John Wetton (King Crimson), Chris Squire (Yes), Andy Summers (The Police), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Robin Trower (Procol Harum), and with producers Sir George Martin (Beatles), Trevor Horn (Grace Jones & Art of Noise), Quincy Jones (Michael Jackson), Jerry Hey and James Guthrie (Pink Floyd). Further associations and performing/recording credits include his work with Randy Brecker, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, fusion/jam band Gongzilla, Germany's NDR Bigband, Soft Machine, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, Eddie Van Halen, Dean Brown, Bob Berg, Nguyên Lê, Joe Lovano, Charles Tolliver, Bireli Lagrène, Peter Erskine, Ron Sexsmith, drum n' bass protagonists Lemon ‘D' and Dillinja. As an internationally established drum clinician he has performed alongside Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, Omar Hakim, Ricky Lawson, Todd Sucherman, Paul Wertico, Denny Seiwell and Bernard Purdie, and most recently has been developing a series of motivational videocasts in drumming. While many fans of British band The The (aka Matt Johnson) might immediately point to earlier albums Soul Mining or Mind Bomb as proof-of-concept, this week's guest Marcia Potts brings us 1993's 'Dusk' to consider. With a crack band - including guitarist/harmonicist Johnny Marr - in tow, Johnson's songs of lust, love and a blacker-than-black worldview hit all the right notes, and it's a lush, provocative ride from start to finish. Songs featured in this episode: True Happiness (this way lies) - The The (Live at the Royal Albert Hall, 2018); Like A Hurricane - Roxy Music (Live from Arenes de Frejus France, 1982); Uncertain Smile, Heartland, I Saw The Light - The The; The Headmaster Ritual - The Smiths; True Happiness (this way lies), Love Is Stronger Than Death, Dogs Of Lust - The The; Do Ya Think I'm Sexy - Rod Stewart; This Is The Night - The The; Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - The Smiths; Slow Emotion Replay, Helpline Operator, Sodium Light Baby - The The; Come - Prince; Lung Shadows, Bluer Than Midnight, Lonely Planet, Lonely Planet (Live at the Royal Albert Hall, 2018) - The The

It's been nine years since we last spoke to Marilyn Scott, so we're pleased to have her back today to talk about her brand new album, “The Landscape”, which was recently released on Blue Canoe Records - her first album release since 2016's “Standard Blue”. The seven-track project focuses on putting yourself in front of nature, embracing our surroundings, and letting go. Marilyn enlists an incredible group of musicians, including Jimmy Haslip, Russell Ferrante, Gary Novak, Vinnie Colaiuta, Alex Acuna, Mike Landau, Steve Khan, and many others. It's a beautiful album, both lyrically and musically, and was created and produced during the pandemic. Here to talk to us about this new album is none-other than Marilyn Scott.
