Quant on aime… !      Thierry Joigny AMAROK, chaque jeudi, à 20h

The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded

Anthony Phillips, founding Genesis guitarist, joins Jason Barnard to talk about the formation of Genesis, his departure, and his latest album, Gemini – Pieces For Piano. He traces the Genesis story back to Charterhouse and the summer of 1967, when he first heard a 12-string guitar. Peter Gabriel’s theatrical stage persona came about through necessity, filling dead time while Phillips and Mike Rutherford fought with temperamental instruments. The jump from From Genesis To Revelation to Trespass has always looked abrupt; Phillips explains it simply: he and Rutherford spent the eight months between recording and release writing constantly, with ‘Dusk,’ ‘White Mountain’ and ‘Stagnation’ sketched out before the debut had even flopped. Then there’s the stage fright. Not ordinary nerves but sudden mid-performance blanks that came on after glandular fever. He was eighteen and never told anyone. There’s also a brief exchange with Nick Drake, playing the same indifferent university crowds. When Drake learned Phillips had written ‘Let Us Now Make Love,’ he said one word back: “Dangerous.” The conversation also covers his classical studies, the troubled release of The Geese and the Ghost, and writing the title track of Gemini. Thierry Joigny AMAROK, chaque jeudi, 20h.

Billy Sherwood discusses the upcoming YES UK tour featuring the complete Fragile album. He traces his path from drummer to bassist, learning the instrument by playing along to YES records, and development in groups Lodgic and World Trade. Sherwood details his first collaboration with Chris Squire in 1989, writing ‘The More We Live – Let Go,’ and his refusal to become YES’s lead singer during the Union era. The conversation centres on Squire’s final weeks, and Squire making Sherwood promise to stay with YES and keep the band moving forward. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Wayne Hall, Ken Fuller and Jeffrey Crecelius This week we were delighted to welcome Yes drummer Jay Schellen back on the YMP. Just like last time, we had a lovely conversation and Jay shared his thoughts about the forthcoming UK and European Fragile Tour as well as the new Yes album that is now being prepared for release in July (hopefully). It's clear from our interview that Jay is totally committed to the future development of the band and believes that the new album will be warmly received. We look forward to that, of course. What unexpected item does Jay take with him on tour? How does his kit differ from Alan White's Has Jay been more involved in the writing of the forthcoming album than his previous Yes records? YES -  FRAGILE UK TOUR 2026 YES Receive Stunning Reviews from USA leg of their FRAGILE tour,  which they bring to the UK in April and May 2026.  “Yes, quite possibly the most important Prog Rock originators and granddaddies of the genre, delivered deep cuts and their groundbreaking classic album, “Fragile,” in its glorious, delightfully indulgent, layered, and ambitious grandiosity tonight.” Sonic Nation, 11/10/25  “Prog-rock stalwarts Yes took the stage...bringing new energy to their classic sound.”  --Danielle Modica, NYS Music, 10/9/25  “Truly prog rock at its finest, if I do say so myself. They've still got the groove, the intensity, and the mythicality that established them as such a unique act over 50 years ago.”  Rock DNA Magazine - 5 stars – 5/10/25 Progressive Rock legends, YES, recently returned from the USA where they performed 31 shows on their Fragile Tour across the country.    They hit the road in the UK once more for a 9-date trek across the country starting on 22nd April at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow and ending with a two-night run at the prestigious Palladium in London on 3rd and 4th May.  The tour will see YES performing their 1971 classic album, ‘Fragile', in its entirety, including such timeless songs as ‘Heart of the Sunrise', ‘South Side of the Sky' and the much loved ‘Roundabout' as well as a selection of songs from right across their illustrious catalogue from their legendary 70`s releases right up to their current album, ‘Mirror To the Sky.' ‘Fragile' was the fourth album by YES cracking the Top 10 in the UK in 1971 achieving Platinum status along the way and was the first to feature keyboardist Rick Wakeman. The single, ‘Roundabout' was a Top 20 hit in the States with the album breaking into the Top 5 on the Billboard chart receiving a Double Platinum certification in the process.   Steve Howe: “After The Yes Album, everything seemed to align. With Eddie Offord co-producing, and each of us contributing solo pieces, Fragile became a bold statement of creativity. It was Bill Bruford's idea to include individual showcases—it was a bit oddball, but it captured the spirit of the time.” Each show will feature a gallery of work by esteemed artist, Roger Dean, whose paintings have graced the covers of many of YES albums over the years. ‘Fragile' was the first YES album to feature Dean`s iconic artwork. The current line-up of YES features Steve Howe, whose association with Yes began in 1970, along with Geoff Downes, a member of the 1980 ‘Drama' era line-up.  Jon Davison has been lead vocalist in Yes since 2012 while bassist, Billy Sherwood, who was hand-picked by original bassist Chris Squire, has been involved with YES since 1990`s. Jay Schellen, who worked closely with Alan White on drums, completes the line-up. The Wolf & Action Jackson were so pleased that Oliver Wakeman agreed to come on First Concert Memories to talk about the first time he saw his father Rick, Rock N Roll Hall of Famer and longtime keyboardist in Yes, on a large arena stage. Though he'd seen Rick play with his solo band many times at theaters as he grew up, he never saw Rick in Yes until the Union Tour in 1991. So when Jon Anderson became disillusioned with the pop leanings of Yes in the late 1980s, he gathered former Yes bandmates Steve Howe, Bill Bruford and his pal Rick Wakeman to form their own version of Yes. Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe not only would release a self-titled album with lead single Brother of Mine in 1988, but would embark on an arena tour billed as An Evening of Yes Music Plus. Oliver and his brother were invited to America to join their father for a week and see 5-6 ABWH shows at the end of the summer of 1988. Oliver shares stories of seeing his dad on the big stage with the other legends of Yes and learning firsthand just how big a star Rick was (and is today). From there we deviate to how a mixing session for the ABWH single I'm Alive actually lead to his eventual tenure in Yes from 2008-2011. Oliver shares how he got up to speed on all the tunes, eventually recording an album with Yes and fun memories from the road. He has a 20th anniversary re-release of his 7th solo album Mother's Ruin coming out March 13, 2026 (click his website below to order) and is embarking on his first tour with Rick in the US in March also. And he'll be touring with his band in the UK in April and November to visit From A Page, his album with Yes. We find Oliver's articulate musings and respect for the fans refreshing and we encourage you to see him live in the US, UK or Europe this year if possible! Welcome to an extraordinary edition of the Takin’ A Walk podcast from Buzz Knight music and the “Master of Music Mayhem,” Harry Jacobs. This comprehensive look at weekly music history explores one of the most emotionally complex weeks in rock and roll history, spanning December 8th through December 14th. From tragic losses to groundbreaking debuts, this week encompasses the full spectrum of music history’s most pivotal moments. John Lennon’s Assassination: December 8, 1980 - A Day That Changed Music Forever The episode opens with perhaps the darkest day in rock music history: December 8, 1980, when John Lennon was shot and killed outside The Dakota apartment building in New York City. Buzz Knight and Harry Jacobs provide intimate personal recollections of this Beatles tragedy that shocked the world. For listeners of this weekly music history episode note the Buzz Knight music podcast replay of "Takin A Walk" with the incredible Julian Lennon. The Beatles Reunion: Free as a Bird and the Anthology Era Moving from tragedy to reunion, the episode explores December 9, 1995, when the Beatles released “Free as a Bird”—the first new Beatles music in 24 years. Both hosts were working together at WZLX in Boston during this momentous release, bringing their firsthand perspective to this Beatles reunion moment. The track, built around a John Lennon demo with contributions from Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, represented a technological and emotional achievement in music history. Harry admits his initial underwhelm with the track, noting that while “Free as a Bird” generated enormous curiosity worldwide, it never achieved the status of Beatles classics like “Ticket to Ride,” “Help!,” or songs from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The honest assessment reflects how even beloved artists can struggle to recapture past magic, and both hosts acknowledge they haven’t revisited the song since its release. This candid discussion provides valuable context for understanding fan expectations versus artistic reality in music reunion projects. The Blues Brothers Phenomenon: From Saturday Night Live to Cultural Institution December 9, 1978 marks the Saturday Night Live debut of the Blues Brothers, a moment that transformed comedy sketch into legitimate musical force. The episode provides deep insights into how Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi created this blues and R&B supergroup, enlisting Paul Shaffer, Lou Marini, Duck Dunn, and Steve Cropper, who just passed away—the latter two being legendary members of Booker T. and the MGs and key figures in the Stax Records sound that defined Memphis soul music and produced classics like “Soul Man” and “Green Onions.” Howard Shore, who served as Saturday Night Live’s musical director, recognized the potential in Aykroyd and Belushi’s blues performances and helped facilitate their transition from comedy bit to recording artists. The hosts discuss how this comedy-music crossover assembled world-class musicians around a satirical concept that became genuinely respected in the music community. The Blues Brothers represented a unique fusion of comedy and music that introduced younger audiences to blues legends and R&B classics. The conversation explores Tom “Bones” Malone, a guest on Buzz’s podcast, who joined the Blues Brothers band and played trombone with Blood, Sweat & Tears before becoming part of the SNL band. The episode details the evolution of the band from initial concept to full touring and recording entity, with Buzz noting the impressive live performances featuring the Blues Brothers’ acrobatic stage show, where the larger-than-life Belushi performed cartwheels, splits, and handstands that would later inspire Chris Farley’s physical comedy style. The Blues Brothers soundtrack, featuring “Briefcase Full of Blues” and subsequent albums, has “stood the test of time” according to both hosts. Songs like “Rubber Biscuit,” performed with Matt “Guitar” Murphy, and the memorable Aretha Franklin diner scene where Jake orders “four fried chickens and a Coke,” remain embedded in popular culture. The authentic musicianship combined with comedic brilliance created something that transcended both genres, making the Blues Brothers a permanent fixture in American music history. Otis Redding’s Legacy and Tragic Death: December 10, 1967 The episode takes a somber turn with December 10, 1967, the day Otis Redding died in a plane crash near Madison, Wisconsin, along with members of the Bar-Kays. The timing of this tragedy magnifies its impact—Redding had recorded ”(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” just three days earlier, and the song hadn’t yet been released. The track became a posthumous number-one hit, cementing Redding’s status as one of soul music’s greatest artists, though he never lived to see its success. Wings Over America: McCartney’s Epic Live Album - December 10, 1976 December 10, 1976 brought the release of Wings Over America, Paul McCartney’s triple live album documenting his 1975-1976 tour with Wings. The episode explores the rarity of triple albums in music history, particularly live albums of such scope and ambition. The hosts discuss the bootleg album called “Wings from Wings” that allegedly forced McCartney’s hand, rushing the official release to market before bootleggers could dominate sales. Harry reveals the meticulous production process behind Wings Over America, noting that McCartney collected 8,000 hours of live recordings from the tour. The legendary Beatles bassist and singer then personally mixed the album, listening to five different versions of every song before selecting the best performances. The final album was crafted to sound like a single concert experience, though it actually represented the best moments culled from the entire tour—a production approach that set standards for live albums. The episode highlights how “Maybe I’m Amazed” from this album became the definitive version for many fans, surpassing even the studio recording in emotional power and musical execution. The album also featured several Beatles songs including “Yesterday” and “Bluebird,” allowing McCartney to honor his past while showcasing his post-Beatles work with Wings. This balance between Beatles nostalgia and new material demonstrated McCartney’s artistic evolution while satisfying longtime fans. Early Genesis and Progressive Rock Evolution December 11, 1972 saw Genesis release “Foxtrot,” their fifth studio album and a landmark in progressive rock history. The episode explores this Peter Gabriel-era Genesis and the band’s evolution through various lineups. Harry recalls “Watcher of the Skies” as a standout track, while both hosts discuss later Genesis classics like “The Carpet Crawlers” from “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” The conversation reveals differing perspectives on Genesis eras, with Buzz preferring the Peter Gabriel period and later Phil Collins-fronted work, while Harry admits his fandom developed more during the “Trick of the Tail” era following Gabriel’s departure. This honest exchange reflects how progressive rock bands often created distinct identities across lineup changes, appealing to different audiences in different eras. Buzz shares a memorable concert experience seeing Genesis with double drumming featuring Phil Collins and Bill Bruford (renowned for his work with Yes and King Crimson). This unique configuration represented Genesis at a transitional moment, experimenting with expanded instrumentation before settling into the trio format that would define their later commercial success. The “Trick of the Tail” tour demonstrated the band’s ability to continue without their iconic frontman, eventually leading to Collins taking over lead vocals permanently. The episode takes an unexpected turn to December 12, 1901, when Guglielmo Marconi sent the first transatlantic radio signal from Cornwall to Newfoundland. This moment in broadcasting history laid the foundation for everything that followed, including the careers of Buzz and Harry as radio professionals. Harry jokes about Buzz working for Marconi in 1901, highlighting the self-deprecating humor that characterizes their chemistry while acknowledging that without Marconi’s invention, they would never have met or built careers in radio. This historical perspective reminds listeners that music distribution, radio broadcasting, and the entire infrastructure of modern music industry traces back to pioneering moments like Marconi’s transmission. The evolution of radio technology from those first signals to contemporary podcast production represents over a century of innovation that transformed how humans experience and share music globally. The Clash’s London Calling: Punk’s Masterpiece - December 14, 1979 December 14, 1979 saw the Clash release “London Calling” in the UK, a double album that transcended punk rock limitations to incorporate reggae, rockabilly, ska, and R&B influences. The hosts recall the album’s innovative approach, including the hidden track “Train in Vain,” which became a hit despite not being listed on the original album cover—a marketing trick that created mystique and rewarded attentive listeners. A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the musical group Gong (as well as some other general stuff) in (just over) twenty five minutes. The band were formed in Paris in 1967 by Australian musician Daevid Allen and English vocalist Gilli Smyth. Band members have included Didier Malherbe, Pip Pyle, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Tim Blake, Pierre Moerlen, Bill Laswell and Theo Travis. Others who have played on stage with Gong include Don Cherry, Chris Cutler, Bill Bruford, Brian Davison, Dave Stewart and Tatsuya Yoshida.Gong's 1970 debut album, Magick Brother, featured a psychedelic rock sound. By the following year, the second album, Camembert Electrique, featured the more psychedelic rock/space rock sound with which they would be most associated.Gong's influence has been seen in artists such as Ozric Tentacles and Insane Clown Posse. Gong's music has also found appreciation from withn the ambient music scene.I do hope you enjoy this episode.Mathew Woodallhttps://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. What the Riff?!?
1972 - October: Delaney & Bonnie "D&B Together"

What the Riff?!?

One of the more underrated - some might say virtually lost - bands of the early rock era is Delaney & Bonnie.  This singer-songwriter duo is made of session guitarist/vocalist Delaney Bramlett and his wife and former Ikette Bonnie Bramlett.  Just as important as this founding couple is the number of talented musicians they brought into their recordings, with albums often being referenced as recorded by "Delaney & Bonnie and friends."  These "friends" included luminaries such as Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duane Allman, Greg Allman, Steve Howe, and Rita Coolidge.  D&B Together is the sixth and final album from Delaney & Bonnie.  Originally entitled "Country Life," the album was delivered to Atco/Atlantic Records behind schedule and rushed into distribution.  Although Atlantic executive Jerry Wexler was a friend of the duo, he didn't think the quality was where it needed to be and withdrew it from the market.  He later sold the contract and the album's master tapes to CBS, who reordered the running sequence and re-released it in March 1972.  In addition to frequent collaborators Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, and Duane Allman, this album also contains the work of "friends" like Dave Mason, Billy Preston, and Tina Turner. Despite the title, Delaney and Bonnie would divorce shortly after the album came out.  Drugs were taking their toll on the couple and their relationship could not survive it.  However, they did have a daughter named Bekka Bramlett, who was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1993-1995 and had a long career as a backing vocalist in the music industry.Bruce presents this underrated rock/soul album for this week's podcast.Comin' HomeThis song was released in December 1969 by Atco Records (US) and Atlantic Records (international).  It was co-written by Bonnie Bramlett and Eric Clapton, and features Eric Clapton.  It went to number 84 on the US pop charts.  The lyrics are about being on the road and getting ready to come home to the one the singer loves.  Only You Know and I KnowDave Mason originally wrote and recorded this song in 1970, and it became his first charting single, going to number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Delaney & Bonnie re-recorded it and took it to number 20 on the same chart.  This single was released in 1971, another single that came out before the album.  I Know Something Good About YouThis is a deeper cut on the album with an upbeat, funky sound.  It was written by Delaney Bramlett and Joe Hicks.  Groupie (Superstar)Most people recognize this as a hit from the Carpenters, but this is the original.  Rita Coolidge came up with the idea after observing female groupies with rock starts in the late 60's, and the song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell.  It was the B-side to "Comin' Home."  Richard Carpenter picked it up for the Carpenters, and changed some of the lyrics to be less risqué.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series The RookiesThis police action series debuted in October 1972. STAFF PICKS:And You and I by YesWayne leads off the staff picks with an excerpt of the 10+ minute work written by Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire. The entire song consists of four parts, but the first two were released as a single edit which hovered just outside the top 40 on the Billboard charts.   You Wear It Well by Rod StewartRob brings us the first single from Stewart's fourth studio album, "Never a Dull Moment."  It went to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the UK singles chart.  Many consider this an arrangement of Stewarts hit "Maggie May."  As with his previous album, members of the Faces join in as musicians on "Never a Dull Moment."Lean On Me by Bill WithersLynch features a song written and performed by Withers.  It was inspired by his experience growing up in a mining town in West Virginia. The community ethic of that town was something Withers missed when he moved to Los Angeles.  It was the first single from Withers' second album, "Still Bill." Turn to Stone by BarnstormBruce brings us a song inspired by frustration over the Vietnam War, the Nixon Administration, and the protesting that was going on at the time.  Joe Walsh left the James Gang and formed a group called Barnstorm.  The group put out three albums including one with the wonderful title "The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get."  This song is off the group's self-titled debut album.  COMEDY TRACK:My Ding-a-Ling by Chuck BerryWe close out this week's podcast with Berry's double entendre masterpiece, on the charts in this month.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device.     Back in the 70s I was a huge prog rock fan and an offshoot of that fandom was discovering jazz fusion. I think Jean-Luc Ponty was the first proper fusion record I ever owned. I believe I was a fusion fan before getting into jazz in general.    I've been planning on creating a fusion mix for months but just haven't gotten around to it. Then last month I was sipping coffee on a cold morning, listening to a fusion playlist, when a couple of laid back tunes came up. I immediately started a new playlist for quiet fusion tracks. And this mix is the result.   It's got some of my all time favorite jazz fusion artists - Alan Holdsworth, Brand X, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock & Miles Davis. But surprisingly, not my fav fusion artist - Bill Bruford. He just didn't have anything quiet enough that worked with the mix. But at least his guitarist, Alan Holdsworth made the cut.   I hope you enjoy listening to this little diversion as much as I did creating it.   Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00   Herbie Hancock - Vein Melter (Head Hunters 1973) 08:50   Allan Holdsworth - Distance vs Desire (Sand 1987) 13:56   John Abercrombie - Timeless (Timeless 1974) 21:38   Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays - September Fifteenth (As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls 1981) 29:06   Jaco Pastorius - Continuum (Jaco Pastorius 1976) 33:30   Soft Machine  - Between (Six 1973) 35:33   Joe Zawinul - In A Silent Way (Zawinul 1971) 40:11   Gong Emotions (Downwind 1979) 44:50   Jean-Luc Ponty - I Only Feel Good With You (Cosmic Messenger 1978) 47:38   Brand X - Black Moon (Masques 1978) 51:55   Miles Davis - It's About Time (The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions 2001) 60:49   e n d

Yes had achieved chart success in the U.S. beginning with their third LP, The Yes Album. Original keyboard player Tony Kaye would be let go after that album, with former Strawbs keyboard player Rick Wakeman joining in mid-1971. Both the albums Fragile and Close to the Edge would be considered both fan and critical favorites, with a successful tour a triple-album live album and concert film in Yessongs. However, during that tour drummer Bill Bruford left for King Crimson and was replaced by Alan White, and Jon Anderson and Steve Howe began working on new music that would become one of the band's most controversial albums - Tales from Topographic Oceans.

We've developed our On First Listen series to give us a chance to explore albums that we didn't know but had heard about for years. Maybe a friend recommended it, perhaps it was popular at a time in our lives when it slipped past us or maybe we'd seen in on all-time lists. King Crimson's debut fit into the third category as many progressive rock fans hold In The Court Of The Crimson King in very high regard. And with many talented line-ups over the years including Greg Lake on bass & vocals, Ian McDonald on keys and many other things, and Robert Fripp on guitar on this album (with future versions featuring John Wetton, Boz Burrell, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew, Mel Collins and many, many more) we figured we'd give it a go. However, while the musicianship is off the charts and they experiment with many keys, times and toys (the new mellotron was driving much of their experimental sound), sometimes it's not terribly listenable. 21st Century Schitzoid Man is abrupt and in your face as a protest to the Vietnam War but isn't a toe tapper. The wistful I Listen To The Wind is 180 degree turn as a lovely ballad but is more than 6 minutes long. And Epitaph, Moonchild (nothing like the Iron Maiden song) and The Court Of The Crimson King though they have moments of beauty and style fail to land in the fun zone. While many will appreciate the music for it's complexity and degree of difficulty, it's not an album you put on in the background of a party. Perhaps our blues based rock brains aren't mature enough to understand but we find 70s era Yes and Genesis far easier to digest and enjoy. Note: We recorded this a year before releasing it as we planned for it to be our first On First Listen but scheduling necessities caused us to leave it on the shelf. We mention that it's 54th anniversary is coming up but as we release this it's the 55th anniversary of original release. And it was before we interviewed director Toby Amies about his fabulous documentary King Crimson: In The Court Of The Crimson King for episode 158. In 1974, in the wake of the release of their magnum opus, Red, Robert Fripp made the decree "King Crimson is completely over. For ever and ever." And he meant it... for a time. For the next few years, he left the music industry completely to focus on himself and his spirituality, but he wouldn't be out for long. In the late 70s into 1980, Fripp was pulled back into the fold, laying down guitar work for legends such as David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, and Daryl Hall. Finally, the need to be in a group resurfaced, and he enlisted Adrien Belew (who had just come off the "Remain in Light" tour) and Tony Levin (a master of the Chapman Stick) to join himself and Bill Bruford in a New Wave band calling itself Discipline. It wasn't very long before it became apparent that this grouping was the next incarnation of King Crimson, and in 1981, they wowed the rock world with a completely new sound for the band. It was New Wave, but still with all the Prog polyrhythms that defined them in the past. Whatever you think of this point in their discography, it's clear they were masters of reinvention. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Brad Birzer. Brad is the Russell Amos Kirk Chair in American Studies and Professor of History at Hillsdale College. He is also the co-founder of and Senior Contributor at The Imaginative Conservative, and the author of a number of books, including Neil Peart: Cultural (Re)Percussions. Find him online at bradbirzer.com or @bradleybirzer on Twitter.Brad's Music Pick: YesTell the moon dog, tell the march hare! We take you close to the edge of the south side of the sky this week as we discuss the early adventures of Britain's answer to all the questions raised by hippies during the Seventies, the New Age of Atlantic: Yes. Yes were one of the pillars of British progressive rock music, but also (perhaps surprisingly) a major commercial success in America long before their peers. They were also a truly singular band during their lengthy heyday; the band underwent endless lineup changes as personalities clashed and artistic visions ran amok, and yet they have always sounded like themselves and nobody else successfully has.Starting with local janitor Jon Anderson on countertenor vocals, Pete Banks on Hendrixian guitar, Tony Kaye on groovy late-Sixties B3 organ, fussily precise jazz drummer Bill Bruford keeping time, and Chris Squire playing a bass so aggressive it intimidates people into crossing to the other side of the street, Yes exploded out of London's club-gigging scene after drawing inspiration from watching a newly born King Crimson play the circuit. Their early style mixed originals -- first halting, then increasingly assured -- with spectacularly imaginative covers of everything from West Side Story to Buffalo Springfield and Simon & Garfunkel. But as Banks was jettisoned for Steve Howe, and then Tony Kaye traded in for Rick Wakeman, Yes ascended from a series of records beginning with The Yes Album and Fragile (1971) to superstardom, with all that entailed: sidelong songs, triple live albums, and extended soaks in the topographic oceans. All set to some of the most inscrutable lyrics but gorgeous music written during the decade. So turn on your lava lamp and get ready to call over valleys of endless seas as you and I climb crossing the shape of the morning -- it's time to sink into a elevated musical fantasy world created by Yes during this, the first part of their career. We take the story up through Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973); next time around, we'll get a relayer to go for the one without too much drama, but for now click play and enjoy the sound of perpetual change.

When the history of late 70s punk music is discussed, a point often raised is that bands like The Sex Pistols and the Damned and The Saints were reacting to the over complexity of prog bands. Certainly, it makes for a good quote, but Steve Jones is on the record as being a fan of Fleetwood Mac and Queen and other “dinosaur” bands punk was supposed to sweep away. I can't recall for sure, but I THINK I read somewhere that Yes was some punk guitarist's favourite band. Really, if so much of that early era of British punk was about great pop songs with buzzsaw guitars, I believe I can make a case that Yes was a band (unlike, say, early Genesis) that also played around with standard pop structure…..just for considerably longer than 2 minutes at a time. There's the link between punk and prog (at least Yes' approach to it). Welcome to episode 174 of Love That Album podcast. For the first LTA of 2024, I am joined once again by Bondi Cigars' guitarist Shane Pacey to talk about what is often considered the pinnacle of prog rock, Yes' 1972 album Close To The Edge. We talk about rock music's progression to....ummm...prog rock, the Bill Bruford vs Alan White debate, and we also bring up Bach, King Crimson, AC/DC and Cossack Funk (you read that right!!!). …..and Shane tells a first hand account of an unexpected musician who was a big fan of Yes (and was Shane's first guitar teacher.....you gotta tune in to find out....) This week's guest is THE Bill Bruford. Bill is a legendary drummer whose illustrious career spans over five decades, marked by pioneering contributions to progressive rock, jazz fusion, and beyond. Emerging onto the music scene in the late 1960s, Bruford gained prominence as the drummer for progressive rock icons Yes, where his intricate rhythms and dynamic playing style helped define the band's sound. His tenure with Yes produced several critically acclaimed albums, including "Close to the Edge" and "Fragile," solidifying his reputation as one of the foremost drummers of his generation. In addition to his work with Yes, Bruford became a founding member of the seminal progressive rock band King Crimson, where his innovative drumming continued to captivate audiences and influence generations of musicians. Over the years, Bruford's musical journey evolved, leading him to explore jazz fusion with his own band, Earthworks, and delve into experimental projects that pushed the boundaries of musical expression. A prolific recording artist, respected educator, and insightful author, Bill Bruford's multifaceted career is a testament to his unwavering dedication to pushing the limits of creativity and leaving an indelible mark on the world of music. On this Jeff Berlin interview: his early childhood trauma and how it impacted him, “falling apart” from years of emotional pain and his subsequent recovery… his awkward first meeting with Eddie Van Halen, early lessons learned playing jingles in NYC after Berklee… great story how he hooked up with Bill Bruford and the doors that opened up for him as a result, his Top 3 Musical experiences (VERY cool), funniest things that happened to him in the studio and on stage, backstories to some of the tracks on his new Jack Songs LP & hard-earned lessons he learned from making this record… best decision he ever made, great advice for musicians, and LOADS of stories. Awesome interview, very courageous and sincere Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com  Originally from NYC, Jeff is one of the most highly-regarded jazz and fusion bassists of the modern era, and a well-respected bass educator. He's known for his tone and technique, and has been one of the major figures in firmly establishing the electric bass as a solo instrument. His career took off in 1977 when Yes founding drummer Bill Bruford handpicked him to play in his band. Jeff's other recording and performance credits include a who's who of jazz and rock: Larry Coryell, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Yes, Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa & many more. Just to address this up front, Jeff's done dozens of interviews on the controversial comments he's made about bass players learning by academic teaching vs being self- taught. We're not going to address this issue, because Jeff's owned a lot of his mistakes here and has made public apologies to the people he needed to. But what we will talk about today is the genesis of what prompted the fairly dramatic shift in his position, and his ongoing emotional recovery from the things that contributed to this situation in the first place.  Subscribe & Website:  https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe Support this show:  http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support
