POPULARITY
One of the more underrated - some might say virtually lost - bands of the early rock era is Delaney & Bonnie. This singer-songwriter duo is made of session guitarist/vocalist Delaney Bramlett and his wife and former Ikette Bonnie Bramlett. Just as important as this founding couple is the number of talented musicians they brought into their recordings, with albums often being referenced as recorded by "Delaney & Bonnie and friends." These "friends" included luminaries such as Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duane Allman, Greg Allman, Steve Howe, and Rita Coolidge. D&B Together is the sixth and final album from Delaney & Bonnie. Originally entitled "Country Life," the album was delivered to Atco/Atlantic Records behind schedule and rushed into distribution. Although Atlantic executive Jerry Wexler was a friend of the duo, he didn't think the quality was where it needed to be and withdrew it from the market. He later sold the contract and the album's master tapes to CBS, who reordered the running sequence and re-released it in March 1972. In addition to frequent collaborators Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, and Duane Allman, this album also contains the work of "friends" like Dave Mason, Billy Preston, and Tina Turner. Despite the title, Delaney and Bonnie would divorce shortly after the album came out. Drugs were taking their toll on the couple and their relationship could not survive it. However, they did have a daughter named Bekka Bramlett, who was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1993-1995 and had a long career as a backing vocalist in the music industry.Bruce presents this underrated rock/soul album for this week's podcast.Comin' HomeThis song was released in December 1969 by Atco Records (US) and Atlantic Records (international). It was co-written by Bonnie Bramlett and Eric Clapton, and features Eric Clapton. It went to number 84 on the US pop charts. The lyrics are about being on the road and getting ready to come home to the one the singer loves. Only You Know and I KnowDave Mason originally wrote and recorded this song in 1970, and it became his first charting single, going to number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100. Delaney & Bonnie re-recorded it and took it to number 20 on the same chart. This single was released in 1971, another single that came out before the album. I Know Something Good About YouThis is a deeper cut on the album with an upbeat, funky sound. It was written by Delaney Bramlett and Joe Hicks. Groupie (Superstar)Most people recognize this as a hit from the Carpenters, but this is the original. Rita Coolidge came up with the idea after observing female groupies with rock starts in the late 60's, and the song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. It was the B-side to "Comin' Home." Richard Carpenter picked it up for the Carpenters, and changed some of the lyrics to be less risqué. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series The RookiesThis police action series debuted in October 1972. STAFF PICKS:And You and I by YesWayne leads off the staff picks with an excerpt of the 10+ minute work written by Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire. The entire song consists of four parts, but the first two were released as a single edit which hovered just outside the top 40 on the Billboard charts. You Wear It Well by Rod StewartRob brings us the first single from Stewart's fourth studio album, "Never a Dull Moment." It went to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the UK singles chart. Many consider this an arrangement of Stewarts hit "Maggie May." As with his previous album, members of the Faces join in as musicians on "Never a Dull Moment."Lean On Me by Bill WithersLynch features a song written and performed by Withers. It was inspired by his experience growing up in a mining town in West Virginia. The community ethic of that town was something Withers missed when he moved to Los Angeles. It was the first single from Withers' second album, "Still Bill." Turn to Stone by BarnstormBruce brings us a song inspired by frustration over the Vietnam War, the Nixon Administration, and the protesting that was going on at the time. Joe Walsh left the James Gang and formed a group called Barnstorm. The group put out three albums including one with the wonderful title "The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get." This song is off the group's self-titled debut album. COMEDY TRACK:My Ding-a-Ling by Chuck BerryWe close out this week's podcast with Berry's double entendre masterpiece, on the charts in this month. A Journey That Never Was". Connaissez-vous EDINBURGH OF THE SEVEN SEAS ?

Back in the 70s I was a huge prog rock fan and an offshoot of that fandom was discovering jazz fusion. I think Jean-Luc Ponty was the first proper fusion record I ever owned. I believe I was a fusion fan before getting into jazz in general. I've been planning on creating a fusion mix for months but just haven't gotten around to it. Then last month I was sipping coffee on a cold morning, listening to a fusion playlist, when a couple of laid back tunes came up. I immediately started a new playlist for quiet fusion tracks. And this mix is the result. It's got some of my all time favorite jazz fusion artists - Alan Holdsworth, Brand X, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock & Miles Davis. But surprisingly, not my fav fusion artist - Bill Bruford. He just didn't have anything quiet enough that worked with the mix. But at least his guitarist, Alan Holdsworth made the cut. I hope you enjoy listening to this little diversion as much as I did creating it. Cheers! Produced by Wayne Hall, Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller Mark was back this week and we welcomed YMP listener and Patron Jon Pickles onto the show to talk about the time he was a 'tea boy' at Trident Studios in London. You'll need to listen to the interview to hear all about it but Trident was the world-renowned studio where, amongst unnumbered highlights of rock music, Yes recorded overdubs for their first album, Queen recorded their first two albums and The Beatles recorded Let It Be and other seminal songs. Listen out for stories about Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford, Trevor Horn and many more! A screenshot from the video below showing Trident Studios - note the control room above and the Bechstein Grand piano used by Rick Wakeman, Paul McCartney etc. What did Jon have to do as a 'tea boy'? Who did he meet and work with? What was it like being in Soho in those days? Let us know if you agree with us! Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
Yes had achieved chart success in the U.S. beginning with their third LP, The Yes Album. Original keyboard player Tony Kaye would be let go after that album, with former Strawbs keyboard player Rick Wakeman joining in mid-1971. Both the albums Fragile and Close to the Edge would be considered both fan and critical favorites, with a successful tour a triple-album live album and concert film in Yessongs. However, during that tour drummer Bill Bruford left for King Crimson and was replaced by Alan White, and Jon Anderson and Steve Howe began working on new music that would become one of the band's most controversial albums - Tales from Topographic Oceans.

We've developed our On First Listen series to give us a chance to explore albums that we didn't know but had heard about for years. Maybe a friend recommended it, perhaps it was popular at a time in our lives when it slipped past us or maybe we'd seen in on all-time lists. King Crimson's debut fit into the third category as many progressive rock fans hold In The Court Of The Crimson King in very high regard. And with many talented line-ups over the years including Greg Lake on bass & vocals, Ian McDonald on keys and many other things, and Robert Fripp on guitar on this album (with future versions featuring John Wetton, Boz Burrell, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew, Mel Collins and many, many more) we figured we'd give it a go. However, while the musicianship is off the charts and they experiment with many keys, times and toys (the new mellotron was driving much of their experimental sound), sometimes it's not terribly listenable. 21st Century Schitzoid Man is abrupt and in your face as a protest to the Vietnam War but isn't a toe tapper. The wistful I Listen To The Wind is 180 degree turn as a lovely ballad but is more than 6 minutes long. And Epitaph, Moonchild (nothing like the Iron Maiden song) and The Court Of The Crimson King though they have moments of beauty and style fail to land in the fun zone. While many will appreciate the music for it's complexity and degree of difficulty, it's not an album you put on in the background of a party. Perhaps our blues based rock brains aren't mature enough to understand but we find 70s era Yes and Genesis far easier to digest and enjoy. Note: We recorded this a year before releasing it as we planned for it to be our first On First Listen but scheduling necessities caused us to leave it on the shelf. We mention that it's 54th anniversary is coming up but as we release this it's the 55th anniversary of original release. And it was before we interviewed director Toby Amies about his fabulous documentary King Crimson: In The Court Of The Crimson King for episode 158.

The Sound Chaser Progressive Rock Podcast is on the air. The show this time is the second edition of the broadcast releases special. The first was way back in November, 2016. It is time to do it again with a new batch of previously broadcast goodies. Every piece of music on this show was originally broadcast on radio or television, and then subsequently released on cd or video. Because there were two major outlets for such broadcasts, the BBC in the UK and The King Biscuit Flower Hour syndicated broadcast in the US, those will be the major sources for the music here. Steven talks about some news again! The Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks single "Shine On" is out now! But before going into that, Steven touch on other news topics. There's a surprising addition to the Cruise to the Edge lineup, for example, and Bill Bruford will be involved in a conversation in conjunction with the upcoming Progject tour. Steven will even review the Jazz Sabbath Show he attended last night at the Catalina Jazz Club, which featured Adam Wakeman, Tim Landers, and Tal Bergman playing jazz versions of Black Sabbath songs. He acquired both albums on vinyl, so will also do a Steven's Vinyl Adventures segment here. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yesshift/support

In 1974, in the wake of the release of their magnum opus, Red, Robert Fripp made the decree "King Crimson is completely over. For ever and ever." And he meant it... for a time. For the next few years, he left the music industry completely to focus on himself and his spirituality, but he wouldn't be out for long. In the late 70s into 1980, Fripp was pulled back into the fold, laying down guitar work for legends such as David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, and Daryl Hall. Finally, the need to be in a group resurfaced, and he enlisted Adrien Belew (who had just come off the "Remain in Light" tour) and Tony Levin (a master of the Chapman Stick) to join himself and Bill Bruford in a New Wave band calling itself Discipline. It wasn't very long before it became apparent that this grouping was the next incarnation of King Crimson, and in 1981, they wowed the rock world with a completely new sound for the band. It was New Wave, but still with all the Prog polyrhythms that defined them in the past. Whatever you think of this point in their discography, it's clear they were masters of reinvention. Today we're joined once again by Adam Elk from The Mommyheads!!! They are finally touring the midwest THIS WEEKEND and you should come out and see them! Tour dates linked belew. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Brad Birzer. Brad is the Russell Amos Kirk Chair in American Studies and Professor of History at Hillsdale College. He is also the co-founder of and Senior Contributor at The Imaginative Conservative, and the author of a number of books, including Neil Peart: Cultural (Re)Percussions. Find him online at bradbirzer.com or @bradleybirzer on Twitter.Brad's Music Pick: YesTell the moon dog, tell the march hare! We take you close to the edge of the south side of the sky this week as we discuss the early adventures of Britain's answer to all the questions raised by hippies during the Seventies, the New Age of Atlantic: Yes. Yes were one of the pillars of British progressive rock music, but also (perhaps surprisingly) a major commercial success in America long before their peers. They were also a truly singular band during their lengthy heyday; the band underwent endless lineup changes as personalities clashed and artistic visions ran amok, and yet they have always sounded like themselves and nobody else successfully has.Starting with local janitor Jon Anderson on countertenor vocals, Pete Banks on Hendrixian guitar, Tony Kaye on groovy late-Sixties B3 organ, fussily precise jazz drummer Bill Bruford keeping time, and Chris Squire playing a bass so aggressive it intimidates people into crossing to the other side of the street, Yes exploded out of London's club-gigging scene after drawing inspiration from watching a newly born King Crimson play the circuit. Their early style mixed originals -- first halting, then increasingly assured -- with spectacularly imaginative covers of everything from West Side Story to Buffalo Springfield and Simon & Garfunkel. But as Banks was jettisoned for Steve Howe, and then Tony Kaye traded in for Rick Wakeman, Yes ascended from a series of records beginning with The Yes Album and Fragile (1971) to superstardom, with all that entailed: sidelong songs, triple live albums, and extended soaks in the topographic oceans. All set to some of the most inscrutable lyrics but gorgeous music written during the decade. So turn on your lava lamp and get ready to call over valleys of endless seas as you and I climb crossing the shape of the morning -- it's time to sink into a elevated musical fantasy world created by Yes during this, the first part of their career. We take the story up through Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973); next time around, we'll get a relayer to go for the one without too much drama, but for now click play and enjoy the sound of perpetual change.
Join us as we celebrate the birthdays of Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman, and Jay Schellen (all in one go given our schedules) and talk about stuff related to them, including news of the upcoming Fragile and King Crimson USA rereleases coming from Burning Shed, the Songs from Tsongas concert turning 20 this week, and Mirror to the Sky turning a year old! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yesshift/support

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller Mark and I had a great time this week thinking about interesting or unusual Yes musical textures. When the history of late 70s punk music is discussed, a point often raised is that bands like The Sex Pistols and the Damned and The Saints were reacting to the over complexity of prog bands. Certainly, it makes for a good quote, but Steve Jones is on the record as being a fan of Fleetwood Mac and Queen and other “dinosaur” bands punk was supposed to sweep away. I can't recall for sure, but I THINK I read somewhere that Yes was some punk guitarist's favourite band. Really, if so much of that early era of British punk was about great pop songs with buzzsaw guitars, I believe I can make a case that Yes was a band (unlike, say, early Genesis) that also played around with standard pop structure…..just for considerably longer than 2 minutes at a time. There's the link between punk and prog (at least Yes' approach to it). Welcome to episode 174 of Love That Album podcast. For the first LTA of 2024, I am joined once again by Bondi Cigars' guitarist Shane Pacey to talk about what is often considered the pinnacle of prog rock, Yes' 1972 album Close To The Edge. We talk about rock music's progression to....ummm...prog rock, the Bill Bruford vs Alan White debate, and we also bring up Bach, King Crimson, AC/DC and Cossack Funk (you read that right!!!). …..and Shane tells a first hand account of an unexpected musician who was a big fan of Yes (and was Shane's first guitar teacher.....you gotta tune in to find out....) We had a lot of fun with this one You can find Shane's music on line at https://shanepaceytrio.com.au/ or https://bondicigars.com/ or https://shanepacey.bandcamp.com/album/the-gardener. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is THE Bill Bruford. Bill is a legendary drummer whose illustrious career spans over five decades, marked by pioneering contributions to progressive rock, jazz fusion, and beyond. Emerging onto the music scene in the late 1960s, Bruford gained prominence as the drummer for progressive rock icons Yes, where his intricate rhythms and dynamic playing style helped define the band's sound. His tenure with Yes produced several critically acclaimed albums, including "Close to the Edge" and "Fragile," solidifying his reputation as one of the foremost drummers of his generation. In addition to his work with Yes, Bruford became a founding member of the seminal progressive rock band King Crimson, where his innovative drumming continued to captivate audiences and influence generations of musicians. Over the years, Bruford's musical journey evolved, leading him to explore jazz fusion with his own band, Earthworks, and delve into experimental projects that pushed the boundaries of musical expression. A prolific recording artist, respected educator, and insightful author, Bill Bruford's multifaceted career is a testament to his unwavering dedication to pushing the limits of creativity and leaving an indelible mark on the world of music. Now on YouTube is the live music video of Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius' cover of King Crimson's “Frame By Frame.”View it at https://youtu.be/3niTH8OlkFEJoe says, the song always spoke to him with its simple lyrics and dramatic theme. Co-written by Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, and Adrian Belew, whose voice, Joe says, “is right in my range and we've been playing this live a lot. I also thought I'd inject it with a lot of staccato violins to give it more of an edge and put my own spin on it.” A studio version will appear on Joe's upcoming album, “Imposter,” slated for late spring 2024 on Melodic Revolution Records.“Frame by Frame” appears on the boxset (2 CDs/DVD/Blu-Ray) “Behind the Curtain (Live at ProgStock)” on Melodic Revolution Records/Amplified Distribution. The box set is three years in the making; the collection is made up of Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius' 2019 and 2021 live performances at the ultimate Northeast progressive rock festival, ProgStock. Joe is the new violinist with legendary rockers Kansas, now on tour celebrating their 50th anniversary. He has played violin for the Who, Bruce Springsteen, 50Cent, Sheryl Crow, and as the concertmaster for Renaissance. The other Stratospheerius bandmembers have a great heritage, as well: Jason Gianni-drums (The Ultimate Queen Celebration, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Rock of Ages, Neal Morse Band), Michelangelo Quirinale-guitar (Thrilldriver), and Paul Ranieri-bass (Mark Wood, Riot Act).

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller The hugely knowledgeable Sid Smith joined us again this week to chat about the context of Tales from Topographic Oceans. Sid wrote the sleeve notes for the Steven Wilson remix of Tales which was released by Panegyric in 2016. He also wrote the remarkable book, 'In the Court of King Crimson - An Observation over Fifty Years', so we were delighted to be able to ask him about the relationship between Crimson main man, Robert Fripp, and Bill Bruford. Why did Fripp want Bruford? Why did Yes decide to push the boundaries even further with Tales? How influential was the album? Let us know if you agree with us! It's only talk! This week, Mike rounds out our fifth-anniversary triad of King Crimson discussions with some dialogue, duologue, diatribe, dissension, and declamation about the band's 1981 album Discipline. On this album, bassist Tony Levin and guitarist and vocalist Adrian Belew joined Crimson veterans Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford to produce some of the most complicated music in the Crimson oeuvre, with every musician devoted to making their instrument produce sounds you've never heard. But paradoxically, it's also one of their catchiest albums, dabbling in new wave and world beat in the same musical sphere as Talking Heads, who were part of the same New York scene as Fripp in the late ‘70s. Discipline may sound like a sharp, disorienting left turn for King Crimson on first listen, but the album did a lot to cement the band's music as a living document to be iterated upon. Join us as we break it down, frame by frame!Cohosts: Mike DeFabio, Rich Bunnell, Phil Maddox, John McFerrin Complete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/122-king-crimson-discipline-1981Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod
On this 41 & Done! flashback John takes us back to the Zoo days when Jon Anderson and Bill Bruford of YES were live in Atlantic City. Anderson did not know that they were actually live on the air until right before he started singing.
“Being on tour with King Crimson,” in the words of their film director, “is like being with the school rugby team and, at the last minute, the games teacher falls ill so they send them out with the maths master. But the team starts winning ...” Is there another band remotely like them? Their leader believes in discipline and cold showers in the morning. He practices four hours a day. Life in the group was “wretched” from 1969 to 2013. Adrian Belew says it made his hair fall out. The running gag among its 22 one-time members is “you're irreplaceable, just like the last bloke”. With great bravery and patience, Toby Amies has made a documentary about them, ‘In The Court Of The Crimson King: King Crimson at 50', and talks to us here about what he discovered. There's much to be enjoyed, not least… … the fact that Robert Fripp commissioned the film and for months refused to take part in it. … the encounter with Sister Dana, the prog rock nun from Norway. … the film's reflections upon “the metronome of mortality”. .. the thoughts and perspectives of current and former band members, particularly Bill Bruford, Bill Reiflin, Jakko Jakszyk and Ian McDonald who “broke Robert's heart” in 1969 and is still touchingly apologetic. … the religious ecstasy pursued by their audience. … how King Crimson's music feels like a deep-body tissue massage. … and the extraordinary two-minute pause that a motionless Fripp leaves before answering one of the film's questions. It's very entertaining, not least because it was made by someone who wasn't a fan but simply curious and had questions he wanted answered. This original and idiosyncratic film suits them perfectly. On this Jeff Berlin interview: his early childhood trauma and how it impacted him, “falling apart” from years of emotional pain and his subsequent recovery… his awkward first meeting with Eddie Van Halen, early lessons learned playing jingles in NYC after Berklee… great story how he hooked up with Bill Bruford and the doors that opened up for him as a result, his Top 3 Musical experiences (VERY cool), funniest things that happened to him in the studio and on stage, backstories to some of the tracks on his new Jack Songs LP & hard-earned lessons he learned from making this record… best decision he ever made, great advice for musicians, and LOADS of stories. Awesome interview, very courageous and sincere Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com Originally from NYC, Jeff is one of the most highly-regarded jazz and fusion bassists of the modern era, and a well-respected bass educator. He's known for his tone and technique, and has been one of the major figures in firmly establishing the electric bass as a solo instrument. His career took off in 1977 when Yes founding drummer Bill Bruford handpicked him to play in his band. Jeff's other recording and performance credits include a who's who of jazz and rock: Larry Coryell, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Yes, Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa & many more. Just to address this up front, Jeff's done dozens of interviews on the controversial comments he's made about bass players learning by academic teaching vs being self- taught. We're not going to address this issue, because Jeff's owned a lot of his mistakes here and has made public apologies to the people he needed to. But what we will talk about today is the genesis of what prompted the fairly dramatic shift in his position, and his ongoing emotional recovery from the things that contributed to this situation in the first place.
