John Etheridge in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.john-etheridge.com/ https://softmachine.org/ John Etheridge is an English jazz fusion guitarist, composer, bandleader and educator known for his eclecticism and broad range of associations in jazz, classical, and contemporary music. He is best known for his work with Soft Machine from 1975 to 1978, 1984 and 2004 to present. In late 1972, Etheridge joined Curved Air violinist Darryl Way's band Wolf, which went on to record three albums in the progressive rock canon for the Deram label: Canis Lupus (1973), Saturation Point (1973), and Night Music (1974). It also provided an outlet for his first compositions, at a rate of one or two tracks per album. Following Wolf's break-up, Etheridge briefly played in the Global Village Trucking Company for a UK tour supporting Gong in early 1975, before a recommendation from fellow guitarist Allan Holdsworth led to him joining Soft Machine, now in full fusion mode having just released Bundles. Etheridge went on to record two albums with the band, Softs (1976) and Alive & Well: Recorded in Paris (1978). He also played on the more recent release, British Tour '75 (2005). With Soft Machine's activities slowing down in the late 1970s, Etheridge began to develop parallel ventures. It was at this time that he began what would become a long-term collaboration with French violinist Stéphane Grappelli, with whom he performed on numerous world tours between 1976 and 1981. The late 1970s also saw Etheridge form the band 2nd Vision,[1] with fellow Soft Machine member, violinist Ric Sanders. Though the band released an album in 1980, they struggled to achieve broader recognition in the hostile post-punk environment and broke up in 1981.

Label: Epic 10345Year: 1968Condition: MLast Price: $35.00. Not currently available for sale. Here's an especially beautiful copy of one of the most interesting tracks in Donovan's catalogue. Here is a description from the wordiq.com website: Released in May 1968, his next single was the swirling psychedelic nugget 'The Hurdy Gurdy Man', a song he originally intended for his old friend and guitar mentor Mac MacLeod who had a heavy rock band called Hurdy Gurdy. Donovan had also considered giving it to Jimi Hendrix, but when Mickie Most heard it, he convinced Donovan that the song was a sure-fire single and that he should record it himself. Donovan tried to get Hendrix to play on the recording, but he was on tour and unavailable for the session. In his place they brought in a brilliant young British guitarist, Allan Holdsworth. Jimmy Page also played on the session, and it is believed that John Paul Jones may have played bass with (possibly) John Bonham on drums. If so, this would make it the first recorded performance featuring the three future members of Led Zeppelin. Both Jones and Page have stated that the idea of Led Zeppelin was formed during the Hurdy Gurdy Man sessions. The B side is a non-album track. Note: This beautiful copy has Mint labels and comes with simply awesome sound. The picture sleeve is Near Mint with one tiny tear at the top edge.

Here at 100 Guitarists, we thought we knew a lot about Allan Holdsworth. But after we did our deepest of dives, we only emerged with more questions: Was Holdsworth the John Coltrane of the guitar? Was he the quintessential fusion guitarist? Why isn't there a Holdsworth signature Synthaxe? And how do you read his weird chord charts? We might not have all the answers—and when it comes to his chord charts, we definitely do not—but we're taking some big swings. We also share our top picks, which includes Tony Williams rippers, slick Ted Templeman-production, and a Beatles cover. In our current listening segment, we're talking about a Wayne Horvitz/Bill Frisell archival release and Jersey Boys.Sponsored by Voodoo Lab: https://voodoolab.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. Blend the playing styles of Freddie King, Allan Holdsworth, and Duane Allman, and — as you'll hear on this episode — you'd probably get something sounds like the great ALLEN HINDS. When it comes to improvising epic solos, grooving behind world-class singers (he's worked with everyone from Bobby Caldwell and Randy Crawford to Gino Vannelli, Roberta Flack, and Natalie Cole), building “mutt guitars” out of vintage parts, dialing in pedalboards, and maintaining guitars, Allen is such a deep player that No Guitar Is Safe felt a return visit to his guitar lair in the Hollywood Hills was fully merited. Plus, we introduce Allen to an intriguing new delay pedal from Keeley and Andy Timmons called the Halo. (Does Allen fall in love with it after just a few notes? Does he steal it from us and refuse to give it back? Listen and find out.) On the first episode of the new podcast series Shred With Shifty, which features host and Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett getting a front-row lesson from our favorite guitar heroes, Shiflett learns the solo from Rush's “Limelight” with a little help from the man who wrote it, Alex Lifeson. According to Shiflett, Lifeson's lead on the song “does exactly what a great solo should do. It's a scene change, it's kind of emotional, it builds, and yes, it shreds.” Shiflett recalls that in context, both “Limelight” and Moving Pictures, the 1981 Rush record that featured the track, were stylistic and structural departures from the rock ‘n' roll fare of the day. Compared to Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, and KISS, the Canadian prog-rock trio were practically avant-garde. Lifeson joins Shiflett from a meticulously maintained studio den he built in his apartment (“I'm a virgo,” Lifeson admits), and talks about early influences like Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, and Andy Summers. The first solo he learned was from Cream's “Spoonful,” but even after Rush's international success, he says he never felt confident in his ability. “I've always been a little bit insecure about my playing,” he says. “I always felt like I could be better than I was.” And despite Rush's infamously complex arrangements and each member's dazzling technicality, Lifeson remembers that there were occasionally some “trainwrecks” onstage. “With our music, if you got lost, boy, it was hard to get back,” he grins. While memories of the “Limelight” sessions are imperfect (“That was 43 years ago. I can't remember things from 40 minutes ago,” Lifeson quips), the guitarist recalls using a modded Stratocaster with a vibrato arm to record the song's solo in five or six takes, which bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee and producer Terry Brown then comped into the final version. The idea was to create a solo that reflected the isolation and fragility of “living in the limelight.” “The solo I really wanted to echo that feeling and that sense of loneliness,” he says. The supergroup U.K. was founded by former King Crimson percussionist Bill Bruford (also a former founder of Yes) and bassist and vocalist John Wetton (also a former member of Uriah Heep, and Roxy Music).  After failing to reform King Crimson, each of the two brought in a musician they thought would work well in the group.  Wetton brought in Eddie Jobson, violinist and keyboardist from Frank Zappa's band.  Bruford brought in Allan Holdsworth on guitars (who had worked on Bruford's prior solo project.  Their self titled debut album was released in May, 1978.  Although a couple of songs were edited for single release, the album U.K. is best known as a prog rock masterpiece, and is cited as inspirational to many musicians who followed in the prog rock genre. After an extensive tour supporting the album, Wetton and Jobson had a falling out with Holdsworth and fired him.  Bill Bruford left at that time and was replaced by Terry Bozzio, another alumnus of Frank Zappa's band and a future founding member of Missing Persons.  John Wetton would go on in the days after U.K. to be the front man for Asia.Rob brings us the prog rock monster-piece.   In the Dead of NightThe track that leads off the album was one of two songs to be edited for release as a single.  On the album it is the first of three songs which form a continuous suite on the first album side.  The 7/4 time and the synthesizer - the Yamaha CS-80 had just been released - are prog rock hallmarks.  The electric violin is an unusual addition.By the Light of DayThis track is the second movement of the "In the Dead of Night" suite.  Rather than have a clear change in tracks, there is a slow transition via a "spacey" interlude into the new song of the suite.  "Black clouds moving gray skies to thunder.  Kinetic sunrise fever and flood.  Fire and water element anger horizon melting to blood."Presto Vivace and RepriseThis is the third movement of the "In the Dead of Night suite.  This is a much faster piece (as the term Vivace would suggest) before transitioning back into a reprise of "In the Dead of Night."Time to KillThe abrupt start to this song is due to the way the tracks drift into each other.  The concept is that of boredom, of being stuck in a place.  "Time to kill, going nowhere, killing time, staying where there's time to kill, going nowhere..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:That'll Be the Day by Buddy Holly (from the motion picture "The Buddy Holly Story") Gary Busey was nominated for the Oscar for his portrayal of early rocker Buddy Holly in this film.  Busey would sing and play for the part. STAFF PICKS:Goodbye Girl by David Gates Bruce leads off the staff picks with a soft rock solo from former Bread front man David Gates.  The song is from the Neil Simon movie "The Goodbye Girl," which would lead to Richard Dreyfuss becoming the youngest man to win an Oscar for Best Actor at the time.    Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton  Brian presents a pop hit from Clapton's album Slowhand.  It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was written by Clapton, George Terry (guitar), and Marcy Levy (who sings the female parts on the song).  It was written in the country blues style of J.J. Cale, and hit number 26 on the Hot Country Songs chart, Clapton's best showing on that chart as a crossover.Ain't It Fun by Dead BoysWayne features a song from Cleveland's own Dead Boys.  This song appears on their second studio album, "We Have Come for Your Children."  They were known as one of the rowdiest bands on the punk scene.  It hit number 8 on the Mainstream Rock charts, and is an ode to the punk rock lifestyle. With a Little Luck by WingsRob brings us Paul McCartney with a song recorded largely in the Virgin Islands on a yacht equipped with a 24-track mobile recording studio installed on it.  This single from the album "London Town" hit number 1 on the pop charts.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Alaska by U.K. This instrumental lets us do some double dipping with the track that leads off side 2 of the U.K. album.

And now for something completely different. This mix is a collection of instrumental tunes from the progressive rock sub-genre known as The Canterbury Scene. According to Wikipedia:   The Canterbury scene (or Canterbury sound) was a musical scene centered around the city of Canterbury, Kent, England during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Associated with progressive rock, the term describes a loosely-defined, improvisational style that blended elements of jazz, rock, and psychedelia. The Canterbury scene is largely defined by a set of musicians and bands with intertwined members. "The real essence of 'Canterbury Sound' is the tension between complicated harmonies, extended improvisations, and the sincere desire to write catchy pop songs."  "In the very best Canterbury music...the musically silly and the musically serious are juxtaposed in an amusing and endearing way." The bands most often associated with this sound are Soft Machine, Caravan, Gong, Hatfield & the North, Egg, & National Health. And some of the artists include Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Hillage, Phil Miller, Hugh Hopper, Richard Sinclair, Fred Frith and Dave Stewart. I am not a fan of Canterbury tunes that have vocals, which eliminates a lot of stuff by Caravan and some Soft Machine. So that's why this mix sticks with instrumental tracks. Listening to this set it's easy to hear the similarities between the bands. I discovered the Canterbury Scene when I was in college, listening to Bill Bruford(drummer for Yes & King Crimson) solo material. His keyboardist was Dave Stewart who played with Egg, Hatfield & The North, and National Health. I loved Bruford's solo stuff, especially "One of a Kind" so that lead me to listen to anything that Stewart was involved in. This mix opens and closes with two tracks featuring Dave Stewart and two of my favorites in the genre. I hope you enjoy this little diversion from the usual ambient mixes. It sure was fun digging up all these 1970s classics. Essentially there seems to be 3 primary types of uses of amplification in the guitar world. Type 1: Using amplification solely to make the sound of your guitar louder. You don't want the amplifier to color the tone of your instrument much, if at all, and you're really not working with the amp in any particular way, you just want it to make you louder. Type 2: The amp is just as important as the guitar, your instrument is the guitar and amp, and one without the other might as well be clicking keys on a keyboard. The amp has to be a certain volume/feel... do certain things when you roll the tone and volume knobs around, expressive kind of playing. Type 3: More or you create sounds. It doesn't so much matter what amp, though the amp itself (like a Mesa sound) might be one of the sounds you want. This is the person who crafts sounds to be very specific. It really doesn't matter if its modelling or an amp, as long as the end result sounds a certain way. Everyone, for the most part, is a little bit of each category, but most tend to fall into one camp more than the other. This has a lot to do with what stage volume you need to... and why different players have different takes on the stage situation. We also talk a bit about playing in Pit orchestras and all kinds of other stuff. Some players mentioned worth checking out: Allan Holdsworth, Chris Crocco, Gustavo Assil Brasil, Stephen Aron, Steve Vai (again, haha), Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau... and probably others I'm forgetting (sorry). https://woodairmetal.pinecast.co/ RSS Feed: https://pinecast.com/feed/woodairmetal https://www.facebook.com/woodairmetal https://www.timmirth.com/ ***Track playing is "Impressions" by John Coltrane : solo by Tim Mirth, with a killer Abersold backing track.... My guest today is Greg Vorobiov a.k.a. “Greg V." Greg is a great guitarist with an individual voice who is proof that “tone is in your hands." To see and hear him in action, just watch any of the many videos on You Tube that he did during his time demoing amplifiers and pedals for various companies (before everybody and their brother was doing this) and you'll get an idea of just how gifted a player Greg is. He's one of those guys that can make everything sound great. Not long ago one of my amplifier repair guys said “you know that guy Greg V?” I said sure, for a long time now. He then said jokingly, “man I hate that guy - I bought 2 amps because of his demos!” (Add myself to that list, I just recently bought one too!) Greg has had an amazing career playing with such legends such as Ronnie Montrose (including being on tour with Allan Holdsworth), Double Trouble, Buddy Miles and many others, and we talk about all these experiences. We also talk about his tenure as studio guitarist working on the shows “Baywatch” and playing the theme to “Max Headroom.” His solo record “Tailgate Troubadour” is an excellent place to discover the talents of Greg V., from subtle open chords to melancholy textured drones to screaming fuzz, it's all here and so fun to listen to. Be sure and pick up a copy of this record. For the past 10 years Greg has put down the guitar and replaced it with the camera, channeling the same creativity and passion and swapping out ears for eyes, turning into one of the most gifted photographers that I've ever met. His photographs of Slash, Jimmy Vivino, George Lynch and other musicians and actors and actresses are full proof that Greg's creative spark is more active than ever, even if he doesn't need a guitar to express it.   Check out Greg's record “Tailgate Troubadour” here https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/gregv Greg V.
