John's guest is drummer/multi-instrumentalist, pianist, keyboard player, composer and producer, Gary Husband. John and Gary go back to Gary's early years studying classical piano and his transition to drums. Becoming a professional musician at age 13, which led to an incredible career, recording and performing with Allan Holdsworth, Jack Bruce, Jeff Beck, Billy Cobham, Level 42 to name a few. Gary reflected on his long history with legendary guitarist Allan Holdsworth and how that led to his current project, “The Trackers." Gary and John recalled Zildjian's Tribute to Ginger Baker in 2008 where played keyboards in the house band, along with Simon Phillips, Tony Levin and Keith Carlock. Stories about Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and much more. They also played two tracks from "The Trackers: Vaudeville 8:45.” Check out Gary's website: https://www.garyhusband.com/ Instagram: @garyhusband1 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/GaryHusbandKeyboardsandDrumsSubscribe to Live From My Drum Room! Andrea Parker & Paul Adams - Melys - in conversation with David Eastaugh The group was formed by Andrea Parker (vocals) and Paul Adams (guitar and keyboards) when the two met in Betws-y-Coed in 1996. The two became both musical and personal partners and recruited Adams' brother Gary Husband on drums and their friend Carys Jones on keyboards. After releasing two EP's with local label Ankstmusik the group was signed to Pinnacle Records releasing their first album Rumours and Curses in 1998. Unfortunately their relations with Pinnacle, always strained, fell apart completely when that label went bankrupt at the end of the year. The group subsequently founded their own label, Sylem Records, on which their second album Kamikaze was released. Jones left the band at around this time to be replaced by Richard Eardley who continues as bassist with them to this day. John Peel, a long-time fan of the group (and for whom they recorded 11 Peel Sessions) introduced the group to Dutch band Seedling in late 2000 and they released a split single in collaboration with them (the song on Seedling's side was called "Cool Baby My Hips Go Woo") in early 2001.
Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. His classical roots, his quest and development in the improvisational, jazz and jazz/fusion areas – not to mention his tenure in the pop, rock, funk and blues circuits – are all evident inside Gary's distinct and far-reaching musical personality. His solo album and DVD output has also reinforced his status as a critically acclaimed writer and arranger in the contemporary music world. For close to four decades Gary has worked alongside a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce (Cream), Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy), British pop/funk band Level 42, Billy Cobham, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern (Miles Davis), John Wetton (King Crimson), Chris Squire (Yes), Andy Summers (The Police), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Robin Trower (Procol Harum), and with producers Sir George Martin (Beatles), Trevor Horn (Grace Jones & Art of Noise), Quincy Jones (Michael Jackson), Jerry Hey and James Guthrie (Pink Floyd). Further associations and performing/recording credits include his work with Randy Brecker, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, fusion/jam band Gongzilla, Germany's NDR Bigband, Soft Machine, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, Eddie Van Halen, Dean Brown, Bob Berg, Nguyên Lê, Joe Lovano, Charles Tolliver, Bireli Lagrène, Peter Erskine, Ron Sexsmith, drum n' bass protagonists Lemon ‘D' and Dillinja. As an internationally established drum clinician he has performed alongside Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, Omar Hakim, Ricky Lawson, Todd Sucherman, Paul Wertico, Denny Seiwell and Bernard Purdie, and most recently has been developing a series of motivational videocasts in drumming. In this episode, Gary talks about: An early influence: John Von Ohlen Knowing how to relax and slow down to benefit the performance Videocast lessons on Gary's website The early days of working with Allan Holdsworth His newest recording with The Trackers: Vaudeville 8:45

Bass Icon Jeff Berlin To Release New Tribute Album To Legendary Jack Bruce “Jack Songs” Bass icon Jeff Berlin has recently released a new tribute album to legendary Jack Bruce titled “Jack Songs”. Jack Bruce, best known for his work with classic rock group Cream as well as his critically acclaimed solo work passed away in 2014. Jeff Berlin, who has been called “the greatest bass player in the world”, was a personal friend of Jack's and wanted to record his songs in remembrance of how Jack helped Jeff to find his own musical path. Says Jeff, “Recording the music of Jack Bruce has been the most emotional recording project of my career.” ‘Jack Songs' isn't a cover CD, not in the literal sense. Except for a couple of tunes from his Cream period (arranged in ways that should surprise people) most of the songs on this CD come from other periods in Jack's musical life after Cream. Jack's solo career represented a multitude of musical styles. This recording is a new revamp of some of those songs, some of the best music that I heard from one of the greatest musicians of the last fifty years. Please welcome legendary Bass player & educator Jeff Berlin to Interviewing the Legends … PURCHASE ‘JACK SONGS' By JEFF BERLIN Features guest performers Sammy Hagar, Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, Gregg Bissonette, Gary Husband, Eric Johnson, Bill Frisell, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Alex Ligertwood, Scott Henderson, Marcus Miller, Ron Carter, Tony Levin, Michael League, Nathan East, Mark King, Bruce Guttridge, Billy Sheehan and Johnny Hiland!

It was an honor to talk with one of my favorite musicians and biggest musical influences, Gary Husband. In this conversation, Gary talks about his journey from early gigs as a teenager with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, to 36 years of working with Allan Holdsworth, to working with John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, and more. Gary also shares his thoughts about “success” and the difference between waiting for opportunities versus creating opportunities. Be sure to check out Gary's website and his newly launched VideoCast education videos. They're amazing! http://www.garyhusband.com Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. His alter-ego as a pianist/keyboard player brings an extra dimension to his musicality at the drums. Indeed, he has been the keyboardist & second drummer in John McLaughlin's 4th Dimension since 2007. Gary continues to devote a substantial proportion of his time recording and performing worldwide across many styles of music.
“Just lay it down. And if that happens, you work until you get sick of playing.” Try Drumeo Edge for free for 7 days Billy Cobham is a name that echoes throughout the history of drumming. Known for his power, finesse, dynamics, speed, musicality, metric modulation, and well just about every attribute that we drummers admire, it is impossible not to recognize the impact Billy had on music. Whether it was his work on several of Miles Davis’ records including Bitches Brew, Mahavishnu Orchestra’s early recordings, several Stanley Clarke records, Billy always brought a certain energy and sound that could be identified rather quickly. While he worked on many important early fusion recordings and beyond, he also led bands that produced important works, in particular the 1973 record Spectrum. Billy has also been quite involved with drum education as well. In fact, he was performing educational drum clinics back in the early ’80s. He has also hosted drum retreats and masterclasses as well. Currently, he is hosting a masterclass series titled, “Billy Cobham’s Guide To Stress-Free Drumming” which consists of ten classes that are three hours in length. He is joined with his co-host Dom Famularo each month and there are two classes each where special guests Dennis Chambers, Will Calhoun, and Gary Husband offer their expertise. Click here to sign up for Billy Cobham’s Guide To Stress Free Drumming You Will Hear About…. Knowing what you are playing to maximize your sound. How to deploy rudiments musically. The problems with alpha dominant musicians and how to deal with them. Are musical choices like opinions? Making the band comfortable and creating great feeling music. Billy’s out-of-body experiences with Horace Silver and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Do artistic compromises create a long-lasting negative impact on musicians? Why Should You Listen? Billy and I really dove headfirst into a dialogue about how musicians can better serve a band. This isn’t about how we become better drummers through exercises and practice. This is about taking what you know and utilizing it tastefully to create great music. Forget the thrills of speed and complex patterns, while they have their place once we have a firm grasp on their musical qualities, just laying it down and making our bandmates comfortable is critically important if we want to become great musicians. This is a beneficial message to any musician. Jazz Improv Magazine called Jay Azzolina “one of the finest and most talented guitarists on the planet”, and I would be the last to argue with them. As my fellow student at The Berklee College of Music back in the 1970s, Jay knocked everyone out (including our teacher Pat Metheny) every time he picked up the guitar. He earned a Grammy nomination for his work with Spyro Gyra in the 1980s and went on to work with Michael Brecker, John Patitucci, Herbie Mann and Chuck Mangione. He said of playing with Brecker and Patitucci, “The reason these guys are so amazing is because while playing they are constantly dealing you their music and at the same time receiving your music back and instantaneously making it theirs again. To me this is real group improvisation that is possible only with exceptional, giving players.” He has also worked with singers Michael Franks, Donna Summer, Rickie Lee Jones, Manhattan Transfer and Carly Simon. His CDs as a leader include Never Too Late 1989, Past Tense 2000, Live At One Station Plaza 2002, The Rolling Stones Project 2005 and Local Dialect 2007. (More info at http://www.jayazzolina.net/) I interviewed Jay at his home for my “What Is Melody?” series, and I had him demonstrate his ideas accompanied by bassist Janek Gwizdala. I also have Jay demonstrate his ability to not hurt me when I forced him to play different emotions and styles. SPECIAL BONUS: I booked Jay LIVE at Pizza Express Jazz Club in London with my friends Gary Husband (drums/piano) and Laurence Cottle (bass) from June 4, 2011. This is killer stuff and you only get this with RadioRichard. SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel! Donate to our PATREON! Pretty Please!

A few years after the recording of his first solo album 'One Step Closer' Asaf relocated to the Netherlands, France and finally settled in London around 1999 where he soon became one of the most active Jazz drummers around. During that time Asaf became a founder member of Gilad Atzmon's ‘Orient House Ensemble' and started his long time collaborations with renown saxophonist Tim Garland and pianist Gwilym Simcock. In this interview, keyboardist and composer, Steve Hunt talks about his upcoming release entitled CONNECTIONS. This new album features an allstar lineup of musicians, including Jimmy Haslip, Chad Wackerman, Gary Husband, Vinnie Colauita, Virgil Donati, Nate Wood, Evan Marien, Jimmy Johnson, Eric Marienthal, Billy Cobham, and many others. We also talked about his work with Allan Holdsworth, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, and others. Pianist Steve Hunt, throughout his career, has stayed true to an uncompromising vision of composing and performing jazz music from his heart. Steve has continued to push himself technically, focusing on a musical style which is both challenging and meaningful... Steve credits jazz greats Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonius Monk as strong influences to his jazz style. During his formative years he studied with concert pianist Albert Hirsh, and jazz pianists Sid Davis and Lyle Mays who all helped form his lighting fast technique and unique style. Steve later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston where he continued his study of jazz. After recording and performing with top Boston jazz musicians such as Randy Roos and Tiger Okoshi, and leading his own jazz fusion band, Steve spent the next ten years on the road with several renowned jazz artists such as Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Angela Bofill, Tom Brown, and Allan Holdsworth. Steve's international touring took him to countries such as Japan, Israel, Austria, France, England, Italy, Sweden, Argentina, and Australia, as well as major cities in the US and Canada. During this time, Steve also served as musical director for the famous touring Jazz Explosion where he led the trio which headlined artists Freddy Hubbard, Gato Barbaira, Stanley Turentine, Ramsey Lewis, violinist Noel Pointer, Kenny G, and the late Phillis Hyman. The Jazz Explosion performed in major concert venues including the Circle Star in San Francisco, Beacon Theater in New York, Universal Theater in Los Angeles, and Hammersmith Odium in London. Steve's desire towards challenging himself is no where more evident than with his long time association with Allan Holdsworth, whose progressive and innovative style has helped Steve to further his own musical development. Holdsworths more recent CD releases including Secrets, Wardencliff Tower, and Hard Hat Area, as well as featuring Steve on keyboards, also include Steves original tunes "Maid Marion," "Joshua," and "Dodgy Boat." While touring with Holdsworth, Steve was featured in the Japanese edition of Keyboard Magazine (July 1991 and March 1993). Other noteworthy recording contributions by Steve include two of Stanley Clarkes CD releases If This Bass Could Only Talk and East River Drive. Steve reached a major milestone, producing his solo jazz CD From Your Heart and Your Soul (BMI). For the promotional release tour of his new CD, Steve organized a quintet including Gregg Bendian, John Lockwood, Ole Mathisen, and Bruce Bartlett.

Be sure to check out Gary’s website and his newly launched VideoCast education videos. They’re amazing! http://www.garyhusband.com Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. His classical roots, his quest and development in the improvisational, jazz and jazz/fusion areas – not to mention his tenure in the pop, rock, funk and blues circuits – are all evident inside Gary’s distinct and far-reaching musical personality. His solo album and DVD output has also reinforced his status as a critically acclaimed writer and arranger in the contemporary music world. For close to four decades Gary has worked alongside a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce (Cream), Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy), British pop/funk band Level 42, Billy Cobham, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern (Miles Davis), John Wetton (King Crimson), Chris Squire (Yes), Andy Summers (The Police), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Robin Trower (Procol Harum), and with producers Sir George Martin (Beatles), Trevor Horn (Grace Jones & Art of Noise), Quincy Jones (Michael Jackson), Jerry Hey and James Guthrie (Pink Floyd). Further associations and performing/recording credits include his work with Randy Brecker, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, fusion/jam band Gongzilla, Germany’s NDR Bigband, Soft Machine, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, Eddie Van Halen, Dean Brown, Bob Berg, Nguyên Lê, Joe Lovano, Charles Tolliver, Bireli Lagrène, Peter Erskine, Ron Sexsmith, drum n’ bass protagonists Lemon ‘D’ and Dillinja. His alter-ego as a pianist/keyboard player brings an extra dimension to his musicality at the drums. Indeed, he has been the keyboardist & second drummer in John McLaughlin’s 4th Dimension since 2007. Gary continues to devote a substantial proportion of his time recording and performing worldwide across many styles of music.

Gary Husband is a musical rare breed. He’s a multi-instrumentalist who focuses on expression, textures, and improvisational thinking. That’s how he’s developed as a critically acclaimed drummer, pianist, composer and producer. Having world class skills in both piano and drums provided him with incredible diversity, which led to gigs with a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce, Gary Moore, Level 42, Billy Cobham, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern, John Wetton, Chris Squire, Andy Summers, Steve Hackett, Robin Trower, Sir George Martin, Quincy Jones and many others. Recently, Gary has released an ongoing series of standalone tuitional videocasts for musicians with a desire to establish their own voice in drumming. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome, Gary Husband.
“I’m in awe of what we all are as human beings and what we all have the capacity to do.” Gary Husband has had an interesting and varied career it would seem. He began playing with Allan Holdsworth in the late 70’s — 79’ if I am not mistaken — John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Todd Sucherman, Randy Brecker and the list goes on and on. The man has experienced so much as a musician and so to have him on this podcast was certainly an honor. Gary began playing piano at a young age and was classically trained. There was a lot of theory, practice and no shortage of confinement. It wasn’t until he found the drums that he saw freedom. I wonder if freedom to express came more easily on the piano after he had spent time learning the drums? Either way, he is brilliant on both instruments and is recognized for his ability which is apparent given the company he keeps. Aside from being a sideman for so many unbelievable artists, Gary is also a bandleader and has released many works under his name and other project-based recordings. One such band was Gary Husband’s Drive which released a record called “Hotwired”. With that record, Gary wanted to pay a little nod to some of the drumming greats who were bandleaders as well who influenced him. He also recorded an album where he interpreted Allan Holdsworth's music and one where he interpreted John McLaughlin. I highly recommend checking these out as well as “A Meeting of Spirits”. You Will Hear About…. Gary’s new video cast series and some of the philosophies within it and why he decided to make it. Not seeing yourself for who you really are. Using our intuition to be responsible but also free in music. Why having a personality prone to serving others makes for a better musician. Are there aspects about being a musician that can’t be taught? How musicians can find enjoyment in music they don’t enjoy playing. Managing our expectations. Why Should You Listen? This is a conversation with one of the finest musicians in the world. With that being said, I think that this is more than worth your time to check out. We get deep with topics that are hard to quantify and explain but we try to make sense of what he, and to a lesser extent, I understand. It is nice to have this type of conversation with someone as warm and thoughtful as Gary. This conversation encourages us to think more for ourselves. That is what I feel this episode brings forward. It’s a couple of perspectives about some things that we as musicians experience but may find difficulty expressing into words. But what is important is that we decide for ourselves what we want out of this and pursue that was honest intentions. www.radiojazznoend.com Radio Jazznoend dedica su nuevo programa al guitarristas británico Allan Holdsworth, que nos dejó en el mes de abril de este año de 2017.
