Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss one of the most energetic, varied and innovative playwrights of his time. Thomas Middleton (1580-1627) worked across the London stages both alone and with others from Dekker and Rowley to Shakespeare and more. Middleton's range included raucous city comedies such as A Chaste Maid in Cheapside and chilling revenge tragedies like The Changeling and The Revenger's Tragedy, some with the main adult companies and some with child actors playing the scheming adults. Middleton seemed to be everywhere on the Jacobean stage, mixing warmth and cruelty amid laughter and horror, and even Macbeth's witches may be substantially his work.WithEmma Smith Professor of Shakespeare Studies at Hertford College, University of OxfordLucy Munro Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Literature at Kings College LondonAnd Michelle O'Callaghan Professor of Early Modern Literature at the University of ReadingProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Swapan Chakravorty, Society and Politics in the Plays of Thomas Middleton (Clarendon Press, 1996)Suzanne Gossett (ed.), Thomas Middleton in Context (Cambridge University Press, 2011)R.V. Here at 100 Guitarists, we thought we knew a lot about Allan Holdsworth. But after we did our deepest of dives, we only emerged with more questions: Was Holdsworth the John Coltrane of the guitar? Was he the quintessential fusion guitarist? Why isn't there a Holdsworth signature Synthaxe? And how do you read his weird chord charts? We might not have all the answers—and when it comes to his chord charts, we definitely do not—but we're taking some big swings. Please note this episode and topic may act as a trigger for some people, and this episode is not suitable to listen to within earshot of children. In this episode, we are joined by Wayne Holdsworth, who shares his heart-wrenching story and important mission. On Tuesday, the 24th of October, Wayne's life was forever changed when he discovered that his son, Mac, had taken his own life at home in Victoria. Faced with the unimaginable task of telling his daughter, Daisy, that her brother had died, Wayne has turned this personal tragedy into a powerful crusade to prevent suicide. Wayne is now dedicated to raising awareness about the alarming rates of suicide in Australia. Last year alone, 801 people took their own lives in Victoria, with more than 3,200 across Australia. Wayne points out that these numbers are on the rise, creating an epidemic that surpasses the impact of COVID-19 in its devastation. In honour of his son, Wayne founded the charity "Smack Talk" and now travels the country sharing his story. Through his talks, he educates parents and communities about the warning signs of suicide and provides essential tips for supporting mental health. Wayne's mission is to spread awareness, educate others, and offer practical advice on how we can all contribute to supporting children's mental health and recognising the signs of distress. We talked about:  Wayne's story about how his son passed. How Smack Talk was started after his son passed away. Statistics and the impact of social media to children's mental health and brain development. Reasons some kids take their lives. Sextortion in social media. How the government could be an ally in making legislative reforms on social media usage. Warning signs of suicide and tips for helping people. How we can help. I hope you find this episode not only inspiring, but also educational and informative as Wayne shares his invaluable insights and experiences. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. Together, we can make a difference and support each other in preventing such tragedies. Did you realise that almost zero places online are safe for children? The dark web has exploited our addiction to phones and digital lives, leaving no one paying attention to our children, who have become easy targets. In this deeply moving podcast episode, we hear from Wayne Holdsworth, a father who tragically lost his 17-year-old son Mac was a victim to on-line sextortion in October 2023 after becoming a victim of sextortion. Wayne shares his profound regret and pain, wishing he had known that in the hours before someone decides to take their own life, they might act as if they don't have a care in the world. If he had known, he believed Mac might still be alive. Social media taught him everything about what to do. Tech companies want you to think that it is OK to use social media BUT they don't want you to know that their algorithms are serving them R- rated content and that AI chatbots and messaging apps are able to reach any of them now in 2024. Parents, we are asleep and do not realise what an impact this is having on children's mental health. Time to open your eyes wide and ask- WHAT are they watching, WHO are they talking to? This will protect your kids. It is an urgent crisis. Before October last year, Wayne knew very little about suicide. His son fell victim to sextortion, paying the scammers in hopes of stopping their threats, but the harassment continued. Despite Wayne's efforts to intervene, Mac was overwhelmed by the fear of his friends discovering the images he had sent. On the night Mac took his life, he seemed upbeat and happy, which Wayne later learned can be a sign of someone who has decided to end their life. At Mac's funeral, 700 people gathered to mourn—a poignant reminder of the widespread impact of suicide. Wayne's message is clear: it's not enough to simply ask if someone is OK.  Wayne Holdsworth's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for better support systems for those in crisis. Today Nick and I will be talking about crusading warfare, in particular, about the military activities and challenges faced by the Crusader States established in the Levant by the First Crusade.  Among the topics we will discussing are the different approaches to warfare practiced by the European Crusaders and their Turkish and Fatimid adversaries; how the crusaders and the leaders of the Latin Crusader states adjusted--or failed to adjust--to the novel challenges presented by warfare in the Middle East; why the First Crusade succeeded while the others failed; and whether, militarily, the Crusader states were doomed from the start.Recommended reading:Nicholas Morton. Ever found yourself chuckling over a beer commercial that's somehow patriotic or contemplated the spiritual depth of a film? This episode with Brian Holdsworth might just be the eclectic cultural journey you didn't know you needed. We lace up our curling shoes (does curling even have shoes?) and start off with a candid conversation with Brian about the offbeat facets of Canadian nationalism, sharing laughs over our listeners' most creative podcast reviews. But don't let the friendly banter fool you; we're also peeling back the layers of contemporary faith, the quest for hope in a material world, and the eternal allure of liturgy and beauty that bind our culture together.Imagine sitting in a pew, questioning how ancient traditions fit into our modern lives; that's where we find common ground. We swap tales from the trenches of music ministry, the magnetic pull towards the traditional Latin Mass, and the profound influence of upbringing on our spiritual compasses. As we navigate the rich landscape of conservatism entwined with Catholicism, we ponder the transformative power of faith and how Christianity has sculpted society, revealing personal shifts toward deeper connections with our ancient rites and the stories that shape us.This episode isn't just a reflection—it's an invitation to a community where the threads of Catholic networking weave a stronger fabric of support and where cinema becomes a mirror to our souls. So, if you're ready to step into a world where the sacred meets the celluloid and where cultural identity is as rich as a carefully crafted espresso, then plug in and prepare for an episode that's as thought-provoking as it is heartwarming.********************************************************https://www.avoidingbabylon.comLocals Community:  https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssSpiritusTV:  https://spiritustv.com/@avoidingbabylonRumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-1626455Odysee:  https://odysee.com/@AvoidingBabylonBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! The show was the first time Anastasio performed in public with Lawton and Markellis, who were joined by guitarist/vocalist Tom Lawson of The Pants, saxophonist Dave Grippo, trombonist James Harvey and vocalist Heloise Williams of Viperhouse.“First Tube” was seemingly named for its placement as the first song played at the 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes show, which also saw the premieres of future Phish/TAB songs “Sand,” “Mozambique” and “Last Tube.” Trey, Tony and Russ would go on to form the first incarnation of the Trey Anastasio Band which made its debut — back at the Higher Ground — in February 1999. That concert again featured “First Tube” as part of the setlist. The same TAB trio was also the lineup on Trey's first solo tour in May 1999. By the end of that acoustic/electric tour, “First Tube” was a full-on show-stopper that highlighted many electric second sets. Along with fellow 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes original “Mozambique,” “First Tube” made its Phish debut on September 9, 1999, in Vancouver, British Columbia. One of two instrumentals on Farmhouse — along with “The Inlaw Josie Wales” — “First Tube” earned Phish a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2001. Nominated alongside Peter Frampton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Joe Satriani, Phish lost to Metallica, Michael Kamen and the San Francisco Symphony's “The Call of Ktulu” First Tube” was played by Phish four times when they returned in 2003 but not at all in 2004, the year that began a second break lasting until 2009. Since coming back from the second hiatus, “First Tube” has remained a staple of both Phish concerts and Trey solo shows  SHOW #2:           Possum53:40 – 55:09Phish w Derek Trucks Live - YouTube The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday (often abbreviated as TMWSIY) is a 1987 concept album written by Trey Anastasio, the guitarist and lead vocalist of the American rock band Phish, as his senior thesis while attending Goddard College. Composed in 1987, the thesis included an essay piece and collection of songs (recorded by Phish) relating an epic tale from the band's fictional land of Gamehendge. On the album, the story of Gamehendge is told in nine parts, with short spoken narration in between. The saga can be compared to rock concept album projects like The Doors' Celebration of the Lizard or Rush's 2112 suite.The story's primary protagonist is Colonel Forbin. Other major characters include Tela, the "jewel of Wilson's foul domain" and the "evil" Wilson himself. Several of the album's spoken narrative sections are accompanied by background music borrowed from sections of the Phish songs "Esther" and "McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters". The final track, "Possum", is the only song on the album not written by Anastasio, having been written by former Phish member Jeff Holdsworth and later added to the Gamehendge cycle.Jeff Holdsworth is a musician who was a founding member of the rock band Phish.[1] Founded at the Redstone campus dormitories of the University of Vermont (UVM) in the fall of 1983, the band originally featured Holdsworth and Trey Anastasio sharing lead vocal and guitar duties, Jon Fishman on drums, and Mike Gordon on bass guitar. Holdsworth left the band in 1986 after graduating from UVM to pursue a career in electrical engineering, shortly before the band recorded their debut self-produced album, The White Tape, though he had played on some of the demo recordings (done in a dorm room) that would later be re-recorded for that album. His songs "Possum" and "Camel Walk" continue to be Phish live show favorites.  James Casey                       ARTICLE Show #3:             Dear PrudencePhil & Friends (Casey singing)  Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), John Medeski, Grahame Lesh, Nicki Bluhm, James Casey, Katie Jacoby, John MoloMarch 17 2023Capitol Theater3:12 – 4:36Phil Lesh & Friends - Dear Prudence - Feat. The song was written by John Lennon and credited to the Lennon–McCartneypartnership. Written in Rishikesh during the group's trip to India in early 1968, it was inspired by actress Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence Farrow, who became obsessive about meditating while practising with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.[2] Her designated partners on the meditation course, Lennon and George Harrison, attempted to coax Farrow out of her seclusion, which led to Lennon writing the song. Lennon wrote "Dear Prudence" using a finger-picking guitar technique that he learned from singer-songwriter Donovan. Its lyrics are simple and innocent and celebrate the beauty of nature. The Beatles recorded the song at Trident Studios in late August 1968 as a three-piece after Ringo Starr temporarily left the group out of protest at McCartney's criticism of his drumming on "Back in the U.S.S.R." and the tensions that typified the sessions for the White Album. Dear Prudence" has received praise from music critics, with many praising its lyrics and the band's performance. Lennon later selected it as one of his favourite songs by the Beatles. The song has been covered by many artists, including the Jerry Garcia Band, Ramsey Lewis and Siouxsie and the Banshees, whose version was a top-five hit in the UK in 1983. SHOW #4:           No Men In No Man'sTAB (Casey Sax solo)11.19.2022Reading PA:55 – 2:03TAB's James Casey…Smokin Sax Solo. Layman meets with the co-authors of Human Work, Leanne Holdsworth and Naryan Wong, to explore the leadership mindsets that can help foster more livable, humanised workspaces (British spelling of humanized optional!). How can our work environments be transformed if learning and growth are regularly emphasized; if everyone is recognized as a leader in some capacity; if greater attention is paid to cultures of belonging, love, and care; and if we better digest the wisdom of human systems? How can indigenous ways of knowing, as Leanne is exploring with Maori colleagues in New Zealand, lead to greater connectedness between workers, and between workplaces and the rest of the living world? Leanne Holdsworth stands for a future where it is normal for work environments to be places where human beings thrive, enabling organisations to succeed whilst at the same time, building social capital through how those humans are able to show up with their families and communities. She is the co-author of Human Work: Five Leadership Mindsets for Humanising workplaces and author of the book A New Generation of Business Leaders and has spent 15 years advising organisations predominantly in the private sector (across most sectors including banking, primary sector, FMCG, tech, pharmaceuticals) as well as the public and not for profit sectors in sustainability strategy and leadership. Naryan Wong is fascinated by how individuals, teams, and organizations think and act in the world. He believes that humanity's most complex challenges will be solved only through well-coordinated collective sensing and acting. By understanding how individual behaviour contributes to team dynamics, and team dynamics create organizational capacities, Naryan helps organizations and communities to act harmoniously to transform themselves and the world. Over the past decade, Naryan has practised the arts of systems change, network mapping, and organizational development in large corporate environments and not-for-profit community spaces. In 2018, he founded the not-for-profit ThinkBetter to better understand the feedback loops between personal growth and organizational culture. Nowadays, Naryan weaves his network at the nexus of various communities working to improve how humanity thinks and coordinates.
