By 1975, Fleetwood Mac had already had many iterations and lineups. Started by veterans of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, early Fleetwood Mac were a blues based band with limited success on the US Billboard chart. By 1975, they had lost their main singer, lead guitarist and main songwriter in Bob Welch and remaining members Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were on the search for a spark. While working at Sunset Studios, they heard the debut album from a duo that was also a couple, Buckingham Nicks. Though at first they were interested in hiring on Lindsey Buckingham as their singer and guitarist, they soon found out that he would only join if they took his singer/songwriter girlfriend Stevie Nicks as well. The rest is pop/rock history as the 1975 product of the five piece, Fleetwood Mac, would go on to sell over 7 million copies in the US alone. Now with three lead singers/songwriters in the band, they could choose the best of the best for inclusion on the record. While the choices for singles didn't always make sense (Warm Ways was the 1st UK single, World Turning wasn't released as a single), the chemistry did and the world heard harmonies that were unknown before. While Christine McVie held her own with lilting love songs (Warm Ways, Over My Head, Say You Love Me), Lindsey Buckingham offered more upbeat rockers like Monday Morning and the brooding So Afraid. However, the real star in the making was Stevie Nicks who turned the album's and the band's fortunes with her all-time classic Rhiannon. It really introduced the world to Stevie Nicks and the power she possessed in her voice and songwriting. She also offered the sweet Landslide, another track on this album that would go on to be a rock radio staple and part of their live show. The success of Fleetwood Mac gave them the opportunity to release Rumours in 1977, an album that would sell over 40 million copies worldwide. But this album laid the groundwork for Rumours and all the future success for the band for the next 50 years. The track was co-produced by Egan, Lindsey Buckingham, and Richard Dashut, with background vocals by Buckingham and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. Nicks also served as the inspiration for the song. “Magnet and Steel” has enjoyed enduring popularity, featuring in films such as Boogie Nights (1997), Overnight Delivery (1998), and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999), as well as in the HBO series Divorce. Later Career and Personal LifeFollowing his initial success, Egan continued to produce music, releasing several albums over the years. Fleetwood Mac's iconic breakup album ‘Rumours' hit No.1 on the U.S. album charts on April 2nd, 1977, and has never really left the public consciousness since. With banger after banger—Dreams, Go Your Own Way, The Chain—it resonated across generations, but perhaps especially with the band's boomer contemporaries, many experiencing troubled relationships of their own. At the time of its recording in California, Mick Fleetwood was reeling from a collapsed marriage, John and Christine McVie were divorcing, and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were locked in an emotional war, with Nicks soon to embark upon a relationship with Fleetwood. Recording Rumours was a year-long endurance test. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly uncover the mathematical formula for Fleetwood's cocaine consumpion; consider how TikTok has revived interest in this seminal LP; and reveal how, despite making positive noises, contemporary critics missed just how important the album would become… Further Reading: • ‘Rumours' (Library of Congress, 2017): https://www.loc.gov/static/programs/national-recording-preservation-board/documents/Rumours.pdf • ‘Fleetwood Mac: In the Middle of the Road' (The Washington Post, 1977): https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1977/02/09/fleetwood-mac-in-the-middle-of-the-road/537b612c-e519-4623-a118-144efcac1a1f/ • ‘Fleetwood Mac - Rumours [Full Album]' (Warner Records, 1977): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uFU79MGj00 #Music #70s #US #Celebrity Love the show? Most people can't weather the storm that is the music industry. But Stevie Nicks isn't most people. She breaks onto the scene with musical and romantic partner, Lindsey Buckingham. They make beautiful music in and out of the recording studio, and make a life-altering move in 1974 when they join British rock group, Fleetwood Mac. Stevie's on top of the world as she swaps out tiny gigs in coffee houses for massive concerts in sold-out stadiums. But then, there are legendary clashes within the band - which include her and Lindsay. After a messy breakup - and a string of diss tracks they fire off at each other - Stevie goes solo. And the “Edge of Seventeen” hitmaker proves that thunder really does only happen when it's raining. And what rains down on her is the devastating loss of her best friend, and a decades-long battle with drugs, which almost kills her. But this ""Queen of Rock 'n Roll"" is still standing, and living her “dreams.”You can follow Brooke and Aricia on socials at @brookesiffrinn and @ariciaskidmorewilliamss. Absolute1776 and Jaytriot put together the ultimate anti-Valentine's Day playlist for anyone who's ever had their heart stomped on, set on fire, and tossed in a dumpster. Instead of love songs, they go full breakup mode, pulling out the most bitter, angsty, and rage-fueled tracks to help get you through the day. From Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" to Pantera's "This Love," the guys cover everything from classic heartbreak anthems to full-blown metal fury. Along the way, they break down the wild backstories behind some of these hits, including Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's messy Fleetwood Mac drama and the real reason Megadeth's "In My Darkest Hour" is one of the most devastating breakup songs ever written. It's a mix of pain, nostalgia, and absolute bangers, with plenty of laughs (and maybe some therapy) along the way. Whether you're happily single or just trying to make it through another corporate Hallmark holiday, this one's for you.

In 1973, before their ascent to rock superstardom with Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were just two young lovers making music in Los Angeles. Their debut album, Buckingham Nicks, though commercially unsuccessful at the time, would prove to be the catalyst that changed their lives. When Mick Fleetwood happened to walk into Sound City Studios and overheard Buckingham's masterful guitar work, he knew he'd found what his band desperately needed given the departure of their guitarist Peter Green. Fleetwood invited Buckingham to join the group, and Buckingham agreed on one condition: his musical and romantic partner, Stevie Nicks, would come too. This fateful meeting would birth the legendary lineup that created Fleetwood Mac and Rumours, albums that would define a generation. Yet all this time, the band's origin story, captured in Buckingham Nicks, has remained locked away in aging vinyl archives – until now. Grammy-winning guitarist Madison Cunningham and virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird have breathed new life into this historic recording with their interpretation, Cunningham Bird. Cunningham, celebrated for her sophisticated fingerpicking and intricate compositions, joins forces with Bird, whose distinctive violin work and plaintive vocals have earned him critical acclaim. First up this week is an extraordinary 1992 interview with Lindsey Buckingham. Lindsey recently turned 75 and is still creating music, but it's so interesting to hear him more than 30 years ago. Although the interview was ostensibly to promote his solo work, Lindsey talks a lot about Fleetwood Mac – from the early days all the way through to Tango In The Night. And we even have a bonus clip of Stevie Nicks talking about her frustration with Lindsey when he spent two years working on the Tusk album. We also have the incredible story of the making of a hit. In this case, the hit is “Beth” by KISS – The story is incredible because the star is an eleven year old girl – and even though she's a little older now, her tale of how she helped make Beth a hit is very entertaining. Plus, we talk about one of the most influential women in music. She not only had a couple of hits herself, she's also responsible for three of the most important and influential hip hop singles ever made. Her name is Sylvia Robinson, and we'll hear a classic clip from her and we'll discuss her legacy! And finally, we close out the show with an interview with Eric Carmen, who passed away in May of this year. Eric was the lead singer of the Raspberries and then had a very successful solo career. Eric was very strongly opinionated – and you can hear his drive and determination in the clips that we found. On this week's show, Slate's books and culture columnist, Laura Miller, sits in for Julia. The panel begins with KAOS, Netflix's new series that reimagines Greek mythology in modern times. Created by Charlie Covell (End of the F***ing World), KAOS stars Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, alongside a host of excellently cast deities. But is the show too self-satisfied and high off its own supply? The three investigate. Then, they dive into Close Your Eyes, a Spanish film made by Victor Erice (The Spirit of the Beehive). After 30 years away from the medium, the filmmaker returns with a beautiful meditation on the nature of art and identity. Steven and Ian begin today's episode with a review of Phoenix's performance at the Olympics last weekend, and the maddening idea that every band from the aughts is now being lumped into the made-up phenomenon known as "indie sleaze" (1:09). From there, they move on to the news that the proggy British post-punk band Black Midi has apparently broken up. The guys discuss their brief career and the surprisingly wide influence they have had on other acts (13:38).Then they talk about Wishy, the Indiana-based shoegaze outfit that has emerged as one of 2024's most hyped young bands. Their debut full-length, Triple Seven, is out today, and Steven loves it while Ian is more reserved in his judgement (24:49). After that, they move on to discussion about Ween, who Steven wrote about this week. He wonders whether Ian has a "yay or nay" assessment of the cult duo (39:15). In the mailbag, a listener asks about the strangest place the guys have either seen a show, and Steven talks about seeing the '90s rap group Onyx and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham at two different high schools (47:01).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the playful pop of Porter Robinson while Steven stumps for the Georgia rock band Futurebirds (53:26).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. The date August 12th marks two significant and big events in the life of the band Fleetwood Mac. On that date in 1967, the original band, consisting of founder Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie and guitarist Jeremy Spencer, made their stage debut at the National Blues & Jazz Festival in London. This heavy blues version of the band was a far cry from the group most fans are familiar with today. Exactly 30 years later, the classic lineup of Fleetwood, McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie reunited on stage for the first time in 15 years on MTV's full concert program, “The Dance.” Fleetwood Mac is a tale of many bands filled with numerous personalities who've all left an indelible mark on their sound. Rumours Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Rumours is the kind of album that transcends its origins and reputation, entering the realm of legend -- it's an album that simply exists outside of criticism and outside of its time, even if it thoroughly captures its era. Prior to this LP, Fleetwood Mac were moderately successful, but here they turned into a full-fledged phenomenon, with Rumours becoming the biggest-selling pop album to date. While its chart success was historic, much of the legend surrounding the record is born from the group's internal turmoil. Unlike most bands, Fleetwood Mac in the mid-'70s were professionally and romantically intertwined, with no less than two couples in the band, but as their professional career took off, the personal side unraveled. Bassist John McVie and his keyboardist/singer wife Christine McVie filed for divorce as guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks split, with Stevie running to drummer Mick Fleetwood, unbeknown to the rest of the band. These personal tensions fueled nearly every song on Rumours, which makes listening to the album a nearly voyeuristic experience. You're eavesdropping on the bandmates singing painful truths about each other, spreading nasty lies and rumors and wallowing in their grief, all in the presence of the person who caused the heartache. Everybody loves gawking at a good public breakup, but if that was all that it took to sell a record, Richard and Linda Thompson's Shoot Out the Lights would be multi-platinum. No, what made Rumours an unparalleled blockbuster is the quality of the music. Once again masterminded by producer/songwriter/guitarist Buckingham, Rumours is an exceptionally musical piece of work -- he toughens Christine McVie and softens Nicks, adding weird turns to accessibly melodic works, which gives the universal themes of the songs haunting resonance. It also cloaks the raw emotion of the lyrics in deceptively palatable arrangements that made a tune as wrecked and tortured as "Go Your Own Way" an anthemic hit. But that's what makes Rumours such an enduring achievement -- it turns private pain into something universal. Some of these songs may be too familiar, whether through their repeated exposure on FM radio or their use in presidential campaigns, but in the context of the album, each tune, each phrase regains its raw, immediate emotional power -- which is why Rumours touched a nerve upon its 1977 release, and has since transcended its era to be one of the greatest, most compelling pop albums of all time. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message
