To prepare for the next season of The Bandwich Tapes, I am re-releasing some of my favorite episodes. In this riveting episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I had the pleasure of talking with the supremely talented musician Howard Levy. Renowned for his virtuosity on both the harmonica and piano, Howard has rightfully earned his place as one of the world's most respected and sought-after musicians.During our conversation, Howard took us on a fascinating journey through his musical odyssey, sharing anecdotes and insights that offered a glimpse into the depth of his artistry. He told us tales of his early musical explorations, recounting how his passion for music ignited at a tender age and led him to pick up the harmonica.A true pioneer in his field, Howard delved into the innovative techniques he has developed over the years, including his groundbreaking approach to playing the harmonica known as "overblowing." Through live demonstrations, Howard showcased the remarkable capabilities of this technique, pushing the boundaries of what the instrument can achieve and creating a sound that is uniquely his own.Our conversation also ventured into Howard's illustrious career, from his collaborations with luminaries like Béla Fleck and the Flecktones to his work with the exceptional Trio Globo and his current project, The Howard Levy Four. We even touched upon our shared experience of recording a song by the talented Steven Fink, adding another layer of connection to our dialogue.Beyond his remarkable performances, Howard's passion for teaching and his commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians shone brightly. He spoke eloquently about his book, "Rhythms of the Breath," and his joy in sharing his knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians.Throughout the episode, Howard's infectious enthusiasm and genuine love for music were palpable, infusing our conversation with warmth and inspiration. It was truly a privilege to delve into Howard Levy's musical world, and I have no doubt that listeners will be captivated by his talent, wisdom, and boundless creativity. For more information about Howard Levy and his upcoming projects, visit his website at www.levyland.com.Thank you for listening! Band of Other Brothers is a stellar, multi genre supergroup whose members boast incredible associations with a Who's Who of A-listers. There's pianist Jeff Babko (Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sheryl Crow), saxophonist and woodwind wizard Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones), drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, John Mayer), guitarist Nir Felder (Esperanza Spalding, Jack DeJohnette), and bassist, vocalist Will Lee (Late Show with David Letterman, The Brecker Brothers).   While they've joined forces before, this is their first holiday release.  It's called “This Year At Christmas” on Ear Up records, and offers Christmas standards delivered in a unique, and even unconventional manner, by this all-star group of multi Grammy®️ winning musicians. The album also features two very special guest vocalists, as well as Keith Carlock's own Carlock Family Choir, all highlighted by an amazing string ensemble that offers the perfect complement the joubilant selection of tunes.   My guests for this fun and more than occasionally frenetic conversation are Jeff Babko, Jeff Coffin, Nir Felder and Will Lee. Drummer Keith Carlock was tending to the reindeer and sadly couldn't join in the Christmas chaos.  Join me for a whimsical journey through the backstory behind this one-of-a-kind holiday release.

Thorn brings her artistic view to all things music related such as promotional work, editorials, album artwork, live shows, and recording sessions. In her 12 years working as a freelance photographer, Thorn has photographed an extensive list of artists that includes Dolly Parton, The Beach Boys, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, The Herculeons (John Cowan & Andrea Zonn), John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Wynonna Judd, Todd Snider, Mary Gauthier, Marty Stuart, Tommy Emmanuel, Frankie Valli, Jim Lauderdale, Them Vibes, Margo Price, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, Poco, Oliver Wood, James McMurtry, and Graham Nash. While Thorn takes great pride in her music work, she also has an immense passion for photojournalism; working closely with Hands on Nashville to document their heroic undertakings for the community and most recently documenting the Covenant School shooting protests, the sub-sequent unfolding of “The Tennessee Three”, as well as the Special Session.During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Thorn began her photo series “High Risk Humans”. The series intended to showcase the stories and faces of the broad range of individuals that fell into the “High Risk” health category; those that were most likely to be killed by Covid-19. Interviewing close to 50 individuals in the Nashville community, the series gained world-wide support; earning Thorn a nomination for “East Nashvillian of The Year” and creating a community built on empathy and kindness. Thorn spent the majority of 2022 working for Dolly Parton on her forthcoming photo book, “Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones”, due to be on shelves mid-October. The book will highlight the music legend's most iconic costumes across the span of her career and Thorn has over 60 of her own images of the garments included. www.madisonthorn.comwww.highriskhumans.comIG: @mthornphotoFB: facebook.com/madisonthornHost - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotographyIG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Sponsorship Information  -  ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - The Wanshttps://www.thewansmusic.com/https://www.facebook.com/thewansmusic/https://www.instagram.com/thewans/?hl=en

This week's episode takes us away from the coasts and back into the heartland. Jen Gies is originally from Chicago and it was at Tower Records on Clark Street where she began her career with the company, hired in as a Holiday temp employee. As luck would have it, her first day working at Tower happened to be the same her favorite band was doing an in-store launch for their second album. Starting in the classical department, she moved into the Jazz Department when a spot opened. It was in the Jazz department that Jen discovered Bela Fleck & The Flecktones which became a musical obsession for her. This led to Jen's education into bluegrass music and when the Country, Folk & Bluegrass buyer position opened up, it went to Jen. One of the more fascinating stories involved Jen's search for a little-known album that turned out to be miscoded in the New Age section. Jen began to buy box lots, feature it on listening stations, and talk it up to her customers. Jen sent sales reports of this little-known recording to the President of the record label and what followed next tells you everything you need to know about the music business in the 90's. Deciding to move to Nashville, it took a year before a position at the West End Tower store opened up. It was there that Jen got to experience the Nashville scene and all its glory. Jen talks about the many drop-ins from the Nashville recording elite, many before they became famous, and some country royalty that came in to shop with her assistance.Join us for an exciting look into the Tower career of Jen Gies and the goings-on at two of Tower's best-known stores.

It is that time of year again -- the beginning of summer and in the U.S., Independence Day. The July 4th holiday is celebrated in many ways, including in song, like the one that starts off this podcast, Billy Stewart's version of the George Gershwin and Edward Dubose Heyward classic “Summertime”. With over 25,000 versions recorded in its now almost 90 year history, it is the most recorded song in the world. What are your favorite songs for the summer and for the holiday? We talk about the abundance of summertime and July 4th soundtrack possibilities in this episode, as we go back in time to a conversation I had on public radio station WNCW on my old show What It Is, a music talk show that featured a rotating roster of guests -- writers, music artists, DJs from WNCW and elsewhere, and music professionals. What It Is aired from 2007 to 2012, and this episode is from 2010, with the late Jeff Eason, along with then-WNCW host Zak Sitter, and Carol Rifkin, who continues to host the old time music show This Old Porch on WNCW on Sunday afternoons. Fireworks! (photo: Jill Wellington) Songs heard in this episode:“Summertime” by Billy Stewart“Rock Steady” by Aretha Franklin, excerpt“The Star Spangled Banner” by Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, from Flight Of The Cosmic HippoThanks for dropping by, and we are even more grateful whenever you share this with someone. Sharing in person is tops, but please also follow us on your podcast platform of choice, and then it will only take a minute to give it a top rating and, where it is an option, a review. It makes a great impact! Great ratings, and reviews especially, will make Southern Songs and Stories and the artists it profiles more likely to find a home with more fans. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes of this podcast on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks to Corrie Askew for producing the radio adaptations of this series on public radio WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng who wrote and performed our theme songs. Today I'm talking to professional musician turned financial planner. Justin Powell. Justin is a classically trained musician who discovered rock music and went on to perform with some of the best musicians in the improvisational jam band rock scene. He was a core member of The Mantras for many years, helping them run their festival. and he's also very active in the Asheville music scene, setting up cool events like the Soul Jazz jam and playing with Blue Bop, a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones tribute band. Justin and I talk about entrepreneurship, planning festivals, being alcohol-free, tips on how to control anxiety, financial management, songwriting, and even more. ** This episode is dedicated to the memory of Kofi Burbridge. As you'll hear in the episode, Kofi gave Justin a piece of advice that changed the course of his life, and without him, this podcast episode wouldn't be here. Kofi was an absolutely brilliant musician who played with more soul than the stage could handle. I have so many fond memories of dancing barefoot in the field of a festival while Kofi poured it all out on stage. To honor his legacy, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi created the Kofi Burbridge Music Matters Fund in partnership with Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation to increase access to instruments and music programs for thousands of youth across the country. Béla Fleck is a wizard-like banjo player from New York City who is best known for his playing with New Grass Revival and with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. Béla is widely acknowledged as a pioneer within his craft for fusing elements of bluegrass, jazz, and traditional African music. He has won 14 Grammy Awards and has been nominated 33 times, and in 2020 he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame as a member of New Grass Revival. In this episode you'll get a glimpse inside of his incredible musical mind and find out how he perceives his craft and approaches his playing. When you hear what he has to say, it's no wonder that he's created such captivating music throughout his career. ----------- This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. “I love Willie Nelson because nobody has a voice like that. Bob Dylan, I wonder if he can even sing? Can he really even sing? That's a question. But there is no one like him, so we love him. And to me, that's the thing that really draws people in, whether we realize it or not. Is that when someone realizes who they are so strongly, it touches a part of who we are, and we relate to it.” - Victor Wooten Mike & Oteil are joined by Victor Wooten, a GRAMMY award winning bass player who first came into prominence as a founding member of the super-group Béla Fleck & the Flecktones. They discuss the art of delivery in music, the importance of learning how to be and project yourself wholly in your art, and how challenges will come to test you en route to your goals. Victor shares the inspiration for his most recent book, The Spirit of Music, how the characters begin to write their own parts, and the value of entrenching lessons into a fictional story. Victor also talks about meeting Oteil and Kofi Burbridge as a young man, the admiration he had for them and what he learned from them, and so much more. This episode couldn't be more packed with wisdom - and opportunities to see the world in a new light.  An extremely gifted and versatile bassist, Victor Wooten is a highly acclaimed performer whose work straddles the lines between jazz, bluegrass, funk, and progressive rock. Easily considered among the top echelon of bass players in history, Wooten first came to prominence as a member of the Grammy-winning ensemble Béla Fleck & the Flecktones. As a solo artist, he has recorded numerous well-regarded albums and been named Bass Player of the Year by Bass Player magazine three times. Victor Wooten is arguably one of the most important voices not just in bass guitar, but in modern music. From his incredibly early beginnings, surrounded by a family of musical brothers who mentored and taught him, to worldwide success in bands like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and the all-star bass trio SMV with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller, the journey has been action packed. Add to that, a stellar career as a composer and band leader, with 11 solo albums to his name, and you can start to build a picture of someone who lives and breathes music day in, and day out. But you would still only have half the picture. Now in its 21st year, Vix Camps host bass players and musicians from around the world, in one of the most successful music camps in history. With legendary guest teachers, live performances, and a hugely popular nature awareness component, Victor has cemented himself in history as a pioneer of music education, not only with his camps, but with best selling books, instructional videos, and a demand for him the world over as a clinician, and guest lecturer at the worlds most prestigious teaching venues. I am hugely proud to call him a friend, a colleague, and on some level a mentor through learning so much from his music over the years. I'm lucky enough to be able to present this interview for you, and give you a look into his world, his process, how he's dealing with being forced off the road like the rest of the world right now, and what his plans are for the future. Vic's Website: https://www.victorwooten.com/ Take your transcription to the next level by checking out the Transcription Vault at Janek's Bass Studio: https://www.janeksbassstudio.com/courses/the-transcription-vault Sign the mailing list and be the first to know: http://eepurl.com/dCdyHz And check out all the books we have on jazz vocabulary, chordal harmony, and bass playing at the store: https://store.janekgwizdala.com/
